In which Derek drives a tow truck and Stiles is the weekend dispatcher who attempts to woo him with his lack of a brain-to-mouth filter and affinity for run-on sentences. (16 chapters and 105,439 words).

In July 2013 I noticed a new, self-published book on Amazon.
I still can't decide if this a good cover or rather amateurish (I don't know shit about covers)--but it attracted my attention.
I didn't know anything about it, there weren't any reviews, but for whatever reason I downloaded the sample, liked the characters and so purchased it. A few months later I learned that it was P2P Teen Wolf fanfiction--something I knew absolutely nothing about and really didn't have an opinion on. (I think at the time I was still spelling fanfiction "fan fiction" which I've since learned is a sure sign that YOU'RE NOT PART OF FANDOM. So there. Consider yourself warned.) A year after that I actually started reading fanfic (Sterek, really) and it became clear that I don't just like the characters, I'm kinda, sorta really fucking obsessed with them.
Fast forward to now and I've finally got my hands on the original fanfic. It's a rather odd experience to read what you didn't know was fanfic, reread it once you did know and recognize all the obvious character traits that make up Sterek and then read the, um, un-serial numbers filed-off fanfic. It feels rather backward.
This gif doesn't have anything to do with my review--I just think it's funny.
It's pretty much exactly like the edited version but with....that's right, werewolves! Shocker. The fanfic is 105,038 words, around 300 pages (depending on variables) and the self-pubbed version is 180 pages. That's a lot of cutting. That involved cutting scenes with Scott and Allison (except a few short ones), one scene with Danny and Jackson (they're a background couple in this), KNOTTING, discussions of Kate, a scene with Laura, some sex scenes and a trip to a fall festival. And many conversations between Derek and Stiles. I don't know--in some ways it made it less rambly (though the pubbed version still feels rambly in a recognizably fanfic kinda way) but a lot of stuff that didn't make much sense in the pubbed version, make perfect sense as a fic.
All in all, it's a better story and yet another example of why one shouldn't file of serial numbers and publish fanfic. CUZ IT'S FUCKING FANFIC.
Btw, re: KNOTTING. It's disappointing. I like to imagine something like this:
Okay this was actually P2P, which as I understand it is a HUGE NO-NO. But it's the first Sterek I ever read, before I even knew of the existence of the wonders of Sterek.
Oh, how my life has changed.
You can find it on Amazon for an overpriced $5.99.
Buuut....I still like it. Stiles and Derek are still Stiles and Derek but it takes place at a tow truck company. Whaaaaaaa?
It's rambles, it desperately need an editor, it involves sex in a shower about 2 minutes after someone is released from the hospital for a concussion, but I've read it more than once and I enjoy it.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This one didn't work for me. Not only is Stiles too rambly, so is the story. I kept reading because I was expecting some resolution to all the random story lines but there never was. Not to any of them. It just went on and on and on with no point.
There's also the fact that Derek's knot makes an appearance but there's no actual knotting. Pfft. What's the point then?
In direct contrast to what this fic was, I'll be succinct.
As a disclaimer, Stiles is Stiles in all his verbose glory - times a hundred. He sets his sights on Derek and goes about wooing him with single minded determination.
This took me way too long for me to read. Interpret that as you will. However the sex was hot, and long (no surprise there), and sorta featured KNOTTING.
Really didn't work for me - I have absolutely zero interest in tow-truck dispatch and I'm perfectly happy thinking of 'dollies' as a bunch of Barbies or paper dolies the risk of explanation had me yawning. I quit at about 5% when Derek had barely growled, having appeared only briefly to lurk with his pleasurably intense defined eyebrows. Stiles was very rambly and felt inconsistent.
Got the impression the author has or does work dispatch. Why yes Peter, I agree.
Some funny moments, some endearing ones, some awkward moments, and some intriguing ones. A solid read all round...though it could feel just a bit rambly. I enjoyed sufficiently.
This is a really good story. This is a Sterek fanfiction story. For those of you that don't know...Sterek fanfic is based off 2 male characters, Stiles and Derek, from the TV show Teen Wolf. In the show they're both heterosexual but some viewers have fantasized about them together in a m/m relationship and thus Sterek was born. This story isn't based around the TV show. The Kate Argent thing took place but Peter didn't survive to turn Scott into a werewolf and Derek and Stiles don't know anything about each other until they meet in this story.
Stiles is 23 and a part-time dispatcher at a towing company while he's going to college. He's rather spastic and tends to talk a lot so he's an acquired taste. Derek is hired in as a new driver and they don't meet in person at first but Stiles really gets off on his voice when they speak over radio of phone. When they meet for the first time, Stiles is totally gone on all that is Derek since Derek is very hot. Unfortunately, Derek's social skills aren't the best and half the time Stiles is trying to figure out if Derek likes him or wants to kill him.
Derek does some things for Stiles that are nice (if in an understated way) and Stiles does his best to get on Derek's good side. There's some stumbling as they start to get to know each other but there are things that make Derek hold back from going further with Stiles. When they reach a point of impasse, Derek tells Stiles that he wants him but isn't good for him. Thankfully, Stiles doesn't care about whatever issues might be holding them apart, he's just happy that Derek wants him and that means he has a chance to change Derek's mind about the issues coming between them. Stiles is determined, maybe a bit too determined because his efforts almost make things worse. The issues that take a bit to work out and that's not even going into the big reveal about what Derek is. Thankfully, everything gets worked out by the end and Stiles and Derek finish the story heading towards a sweet HEA together.
This was a really enjoyable story. I loved Stiles and Derek and seeing them get together. Stiles is so spastic and tends to put his foot in his mouth and Derek is so laconic and careful about everything...they're a good example of how opposites attract. The story is somewhat humorous just because of the wacky things Stiles thinks/says. I noticed a few editing errors but it was nothing major...past that I had no real complaints and overall, I really enjoyed the story. :D
Usually Stiles rambling on and on is cute, but in this version I just can't get into it. The removal of the Teen Wolf elements made this original m/m story fall flat for me. I love this author's work normally, but this one's just not for me.
This was a cute read, with the characters picking up some interesting quirks. I never thought something about a dispatcher would be a good story, but there is a lot more to the story than just that.
3.5 stars. I'm such a Sterek lover, it's hard to be completely objective in a review. Yes it was long, but it kept me in Sterek land for good while. A somewhat rambling work, some cool moments, some scary moments. Typical Teen Wolf personalities are a little exaggerated. Stiles does some stupid stuff. Very slow for Derek to work out being with Stiles. Long book, could use some editing to tighten story.
