Rate this book

The illustrations are beautiful but the writing is weird and kind of all over the place jumping from once reference to another with little connection. There's a lot of formatting issues in my opinion. The cursive writing gets annoying to read after a while and the illustrations set behind the text can make it difficult to read. Some of the text and illustrations overlap onto other illustrations making it difficult to see the full artwork distinctly. It also bothers me somewhat that the author is calling religions like Druidism and northern heathenry "cults". These are very real religions that people still practice. They're not cults or some made up fantasy for your entertainment. I originally thought this was going to be a fun kids book with made up wizard spells but it's just this really weird New Age stuff. A very strange book. Lovely illustrations though.

This is basically a long picture book, though not for children; some of its art is mildly NSFW. It has a lot of information that I haven't seen before, though the historical figures and legends are mixed up with New Age stuff and even references to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. This book is really about the aesthetic as much as the writing—the art is gorgeous, and despite its thinness, you can hold it open in your hand and feel like you're a wizard with a spellbook.

I didn't find this book particularly informative, but it's a nice book to keep around just for the beautiful illustrations of Robert Ingpen (which is why I bought it).

Great informative book for kids that are into wizard-lore, particularly the bookish kids. The stories can add meaning to a variety of books and shows - everything from the Winchesters on "Supernatural" to Septimus Heap. The most frequent references are the more well-known Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but there are interesting links to many series, like the island of Circe that kids will know from Percy Jackson and the history of the Druids, as read in the Iron Druid books. Balancing out the interesting histories are the always amazing illustrations of Robert Ingpen.

It is pretty and fun, but it is not well-written. I don't understand how people pay huge amounts of money on the design, illustrations and on a padded, poofy cover, and they don't pay an editor or proofreader.

It includes copious amounts of gunk, but it is interesting and informative in places. The parts on wizards past was my favourite.
