I returned to this book recently when a member of the Embroiderers' Guild to which I belong told me of her upcoming trip to Sumba. I made a similar trip more than two decades ago and wanted to revisit the wonderfully rich cultural heritage - particularly the textile traditions.

This book is based on the textile collection of the Rotterdam Museum of Ethnography. In addition fabulous photos of items in their collection it contains three essays by researchers who specialised in the arts of Sumba - mostly textile- between 1965 and 1999 when the book was published. There are also some excellent photos of people, places and sculpture reproduced from the Archives of the Reformed Protestant Church in the Netherlands.

The first of the essays, "Life and Death" in Sumba, is what justifies the title referring to 'decorative arts' rather than 'textile arts'. It provides a useful context to the culture and a range of buildings, arts and customs. The other two essays, on weaving and textiles respectively, are more specific.

This is a very useful and inspiring book for the visitor, the textile student and those interested in the motifs and culture of Indonesia. It's given me much pleasure.
