When Jason Smith wins a contest he doesn’t remember entering, he earns a visit with The MeatGrinder, aka Trent Peterson. Trent expected a rabid fan; instead, he gets Jason, who knows nothing about wrestling, doesn’t care about the prizes, and would prefer to skip the official wrestling demo, please. Trent should be annoyed, but by the end of the day, Trent knows he wants more than one day with Jason. Now he just has to convince Jason that Trent is more than his alter ego.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Daily Dose package "Make a Play".
Kyle Adams started out dabbling with writing gay romance stories for fun. He writes what makes him laugh and hopes anyone who reads his work laughs with him. Kyle had three books nominated in the 2013 Goodreads.com M/M Romance Group readers choice awards and two books nominated in 2012 for the same event. His free story, Dirty Cop won Best Short Story in 2013.
Kyle has a hard time picking a favorite anything (color, book, music, quote, etc.), so trying to write a decent bio was quite the challenge. He is a very quiet person and is used to keeping things to himself. If there is anything you want to know, just ask.
Kyle loves hearing from readers. Always feel free to contact him or add on any of the following:
4.5 stars Jason and wrestling star The MeatGrinder aka Trent are wonderful, witty characters. I shouldn't be surprised because Kyle writes his MC's brilliantly. Expect to be entertained and suffer through bouts of continuous laughter, once Jason shows up to accept his prize its mischievous fun all the way. Puffed up and in a tizzy, Jason's barefaced lies are hilarious. Gaming and wrestling are clearly not his strong points. I never expected the unknown world of pro-wrestling would be so frisky lol. I had a ball and Jason is the prize. I am greedily awaiting, more sweet, deliciously sexy, fun stories. Highly recommended.
This one literally had so many LOL moments, that I umm.. might have gotten funny looks. *Note to self: don't read Kyle Adams books in public* The blurb sums it up well, Jason a regular guy with a snarky funny sarcastic side, I thought he was hilarious. He wins a contest he entered, he doesn't quite remember entering, but since he enters every contest he sees, (some might call it a compulsion, I prefer to call it a habit) that isn't surprising. Winning a day with The MeatGrinder isn't exactly at the top of his to-do list, until he realizes that Meat is actually Trent, a guy he crushed on in college, but never had the guts to approach. Jason steals the show in this story, it's his head we are in and I loved it there, poor Trent is just along for the ride that is Jason. He might think wrestling was easy compared to what's in store for him now. :)
They spend the day together and Trent is a very patient with Jason's lack of exuberance for all the planned events, so he adds a few unplanned events..which Jason is very thrilled with. As always I'm greedy and would love more, these guys are great, and I would love to see the 'choreographed' interview, because I'm pretty sure Jason doesn't do choreographed well and the fight he gets to attend ...oh dear, I really am a greedy girl.
This is a cute, short and absolutely adorable fun story and it has a cat. Kyle writes characters that are snarky but sweet to perfection and this story is probably my favorite of his, but Ashley from A Dirty Drag Collection is a very close second.
3.5 stars This first publication from Kyle Adams is a HOOT!! I find myself giggling so much!! Jason, who CLEARLY is not a wrestling fan, wins the first prize to meet The MeatGrinder, a big shot professional wrestler ... and the discussion is sooo hilarious!! Full of funny innuendos and wacky one-liners. I especially laughed a lot when Jason played xBox and his character is just running around (oh God, I can imagine! *tears of mirth*)
My complain, I guess, is that the story happens basically in one day. Even if Jason remembers Trent, it is not the other way around. It's not like Trent has been carrying a torch for Jason as well. Which means that it becomes sort of insta-love (since Trent jumps into the idea of having Jason as boyfriend right on that day) -- and I am not a fan of insta-things in my romance.
Also, I have to cringe on few of the dialogs during the sex scene ("I always wanted a facial, but thought it would be too messy" -- cheesy gross).
So I guess I like the beginning-half better than how the story ends. Maybe if Kyle Adams adds Epilogue (especially with that "Scripted Interview"), I would be happier *greedy grin*
After reading a few free shorts by this author I felt confident that I knew what I was going to get in this story, and while that holds true, I also felt like I got so much more.
The humour was there, I laughed out loud a lot. The sex was there, although surprisingly not over the top. But this also had more story, a definite plus for me. The sweet kisses and flirting were a lovely addition from what I was expecting. The only thing this needs to make it perfect would be a sequel lol.
Kyle Adams has proven with this little short that he has a knack for story telling. I hope to read more from this author, preferably some full length stories please.
This story is piece of Dreamspinner Press’ 2013 Daily Dose – Make a Play anthology. It is about Jason Smith, a common-named young man with a compulsive habit of entering contests. One day, Jason actually wins a contest he doesn’t even remember entering – The Biggest Meathead Alive! contest. More specifically, he gets to spend the day with wrestling superstar, The MeatGrinder.
After performing some recon on the MeatGrinder in preparation for his big prize collection, Jason realizes he actually knows the MeatGrinder, or Trent Peterson, as he was called back when Jason crushed on him in college. Jason sees this as his second chance at Trent now that he is more confident and outgoing, and his excitement is renewed. Every obstacle Jason comes across, he sees as an opportunity of things that were meant to be. I love his attitude! Jason is incredibly cute. I totally loved his turtle shell backpack!
Jason’s contest day quickly arrives where he is met with a groggy Trent who had forgotten all about what day it was. Jason is a wonderful character, funny and cute and even a bit of a whirlwind I imagine. It’s fun to watch him try to be so nonchalant with Trent while pretending to be the Biggest Meathead super enthusiastic contest winner. Trent seems like a big cuddly bear with a giant heart and just generally a nice guy. They dance around each other with funny banter and comments. Jason still doesn’t quite get the whole wrestling fan deal but he tries so hard to be convincing.
Video games commence, as well as an education in the elements of wrestling, which double as an attempt to cure Jason of his contest entering addiction. Add a refreshing swim, steamy shower scene, and promises of a future relationship, and this little story has it all. Jason and Trent have great chemistry, and they really seem to get each other. I could totally picture them together and would love to see more of their budding relationship. What an enjoyable and unique story.
5 Stars! Opposites attract in this engaging humorous steamy short!
Although it’s a short read, Kyle Adams manages to give the characters and the story an amazing amount of depth. You immediately feel the attraction between Jason and Trent, aka ‘The MeatGrinder’, when Jason is brought to Trent’s house to claim his prize. As they work their way through the day, Jason’s ‘prize package’ takes on new meaning, as Trent adds some ‘personal touches’!
“You don’t think I’m cute anymore? That’s too bad, ’cause I have to admit, I think you’re hot.” Trent grabbed my hands and placed them on his chest. “I was going to save this for later, but it looks like I’d better do it now.” I felt his chest muscles start flexing under my hands. He raised one side and then the other in a little chest-muscle dance. None of the muscles on my body could move like that. It was a bigger turn on than I felt like admitting.
The author is brilliant with off-the-cuff sexual innuendos, which leads to amusing dialogue between the characters and some hysterical one-liners. I found myself grinning throughout the read, and became attached to these two adorable guys! It’s one day in the life of Jason and Trent, but it’s a full one, not only for the characters, but for the reader too. The author brings it home with a satisfying ending, where you feel the sincerity of this budding relationship. I can’t help but wonder how much fun it would be to visit with these two again! *hint hint*
I have to be honest I’ve read every Kyle Adams free short story up to now and I absolutely loved every single one and I’ve always said that I would have been very happy to pay for them because they’re really well written, never fail to make me laugh, always get me a bit hot under the collar – Fans self – and definitely never fail to leave me wanting more. And that’s why he gets high ratings from me, however short or at times bite size his stories have been. Its all about the enjoyment for me and I adore Kyles style.
So I was all set to go and buy Prize Package from Dreamspinner when Sid offered me the book to read and review for free again! Well I’m certainly not going to refuse that am I? ( Sorry Kyle I was going to pay. Honest! )
Kyles first purchaseble novella Prize Package has his trademark styling all over it. Its laugh out loud funny, has characters who draw you to them straight away, great chemistry and sexual tension and of course some mouthwatering smexy bits ….. Although I did miss his usual uber hot, deliciously smutty sex scenes that appear to have been slightly toned down in this story. Hence the slight drop in rating. Still sexy though!
I read it in bed and I was sniggering so much I was convinced I’d wake everyone up so I advise reading this in a place where you don’t want to attract attention. Reading this secretly at work for instance is a definite no no.You WILL get found out when you keep breaking into spontaneous bouts of laughter and make umpteen visits to the loo for fear of ( ahem) embarrassing yourself! Also do not drink tea or any other beverage whilst reading this book. Liquids and snorting leads to messy nasal spraying causing possible harm to your reading material, my kindle nearly short circuited! LOL.
The blurb gives enough info on the book so its no use rehashing that, but I will say that this contains one of the funniest games played on an Xbox I’ve ever come across and the banter between Jason and Trent plus their quirky interactions tickled me pink. Jason is clueless about anything to do with the contest or wrestling but the way he tries to get himself out of the many fibs he makes to cover himself, trying to make it look like he knows what he’s talking about, are classic and Trents insistence that they do everything that’s included in the prize he’s won, including a lesson in wrestling from ‘ The Meatgrinder ‘ himself, make for many more sniggering sessions. Great sizzling fun from beginning to end.
Congratulations Kyle on another gem. I agree with your moms wise words .. “The best book Ive read today!”
Hope the next one is coming soon and I will put my hand in my purse for that one… Unless of course Sid tempts me again. Must remember… keep a towel handy, read close to a bathroom and finish drink before commencement. Brilliant. A Kyle keeper. Original review posted at https://sidlove.wordpress.com/2013/06...
Kyle's first published work from DSP, many congratulations. 4 stars and a from me!!
This was Jason's story...how he apparently entered a competition to spend a day with the wrestler known as The MeatGrinder ('MG') and won (whoop!)...how he already knew that the 'MG's alter ego was a guy named Trent Petersen and had fancied him from afar at college (Jason being too shy and having such dreadful skin to boot to even contemplate approaching TP at college) and how in the intervening years, Jason's skin had cleared up a treat and as a result was no longer anywhere near as shy as he used to be, so was looking forward to spending the day with the 'MG'...if only the 'MG' would remember him.
As things turned out, maybe Trent and his alter ego did remember Jason.....things certainly seemed to indicate that. My favourite line from the book 'I had worn my black boxer briefs that had "Nerd? I prefer the term Intellectual Badass" printed on them in white lettering'. Hope this is the first of many Kyle, wish you the best of luck!!
Jason enters contests. Lots and lots of contests. And one day, he wins. He wins a day with a professional wrestler, The Meatgrinder!
Of course Jason has no idea who The Meatgrinder is, so he decides to just fake it.
Jason was awesome.
On the table sat a tote bag with a picture of Trent looking crazy, his eyes bulging like he was trying really hard to poop. In big red letters, it said “The MeatGrinder.” It was more than a little creepy.
This is a funny, short story about a professional wrestler and his not-really fan.
The best thing about a Kyle Adams book is how great the characters are. Just the funniest things and in Prize Package he doesn't disappoint. Trent "The MeatGrinder" is a pro wrestler and he's got some good lines but the star of the show is The Jason. That man is hysterical. I agree with other reviewers - you shouldn't read a Kyle Adams book in public because they are laugh inducing.
As a non-wrestling fan who has rabid wrestling relatives I completely could relate to Jason's bewilderment and dismay of it all. He handles it so great (playing video games and just running around the ring? Totally what I would do). And yes, the wrestling faces often look like someone has to poop. Safeword peaches. I love this guy.
”But when you say Powerslam, what exactly will you be power slamming into?
Prize Package by Kyle Adams was a hilarious tale with all the right moves.
Jason can’t believe he won! A chance to meet and spend the day with The MeatGrinder, a big, sexy professional wrestler with fans aplenty. But Jason can’t quite remember entering this contest and doesn’t really know heads or tails about the sport. Which will make his grand prize a surprise for sure. Even more so when he realizes The MeatGrinder is actually his old college crush—Trent Petersen. Can Jason convince Trent he’s a fan and maybe much more?
For such a quick blast of fun, this tale has it all! Wrestling moves (*waggles eyebrows* haha…No, they really did wrestle.), chainsaw injuries, fine asses, flirting, and turtle backpacks! Come on—the pack was….”simply too cute not to buy”. Haha…Jason’s voice absolutely killed me! I smiled, laughed out loud and maybe even snorted once or twice. :D He was an adorable ball of wicked sarcasm and energy. This is Trent trying to show Jason some wrestling moves….
”I’m going to teach you how to Irish Whip someone."
"Oh, that sounds kinky. I want my safeword to be peaches” haha….
I may have missed a beat or two between these guys early on though, simply because I wasn’t sure what Trent was up to—Did he like Jason? Was he just trying to stick to the contest rules? Was he showing off? But when the brushing-up-against-each-other-love-seat fun turned to touches, sighs, and *cough* …..not telling—sparks flew! My heart melted as soon as I realized Trent was trying to show Jason who he was in the ring and out.
A highly recommended dose of pin me to the mat sexy goodness with laughs and smiles galore!
I’m off to hunt down more from Kyle Adams. I loved his sweetness, fast pace, and humor. More please!
So extremely entertaining. I chuckled from beginning to end. Jason is so flipping quick with the witty comebacks you can't help but love him. Trent is just so sweet, not what you would normally expect from a big, predatory pro wrestler. I loved this story, and without doubt think it's Kyle's best story to date. Looking forward to more of his stories, and hope for longer ones too.
If you want a quick, hilarious, sexy but sweet read, you've got it here. Highly recommend.
This was such a laugh out loud story I loved it! Jason was the sweetest, funniest, snarkiest character I’ve run across in a long time and Trent didn’t fail to entertain me either.
Jason wins a day with a wrestler Trent “The MeatGrinder” after entering a contest he doesn’t remember. He arrives at Trent’s not knowing how the day is going to go, he doesn’t know anything about wrestling and has to fake it. It just happens that Jason and Trent went to school together and Jason had a mad crush on him. That’s the one place in this story that I thought fell a bit. Trent doesn’t remember Jason or at least it was never said if he did or not. The “instant” attraction Jason feels for Trent really isn’t instant he’s never forgotten Trent but Trent’s reaction to Jason seems just a bit too fast. I loved the amount of dialogue there was between them and the very hot smexy scenes were perfect. It was hard to believe this all takes place in one day so much happened.
The characters, the writing and the story were all a win here and any story that can make me laugh out loud is a good one. I would love it if this story was expanded I need to know more about these two.
If this is what I can expect from this author I certainly will be looking to read more from him.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to laugh.
Jason was an addict. Not to drugs or smoke, but to entering contests. Unfortunately, he never won. So, when he won a contest whose prize was spending a day with pro-westler MeatGrinder, he was shocked. Moreover, he didn't know what to do since he'd never been fan of the sport. What should he do?
Good thing when he googled the MeatGrinder's name, he found out that the wrestler was Trent, the jock whom he had crush in college. Not that it helped much, since Trent never knew he existed.
This is such a funny and sweet story. I liked how Trent was at the same time irritated and amused that the contest winner had no clues about pro-wrestling but still pretended that he was a big fan of him.
This story definitely isn't perfect, but the fact that it literally had me laughing, out loud, and constantly throughout definitely gave it a higher rating!
Jason has a compulsion, he can't help but enter in contests and giveaways. When he wins a day with The MeatGrinder, a popular professional wrestler, he's a bit baffled since he can't even remember entering. Then, when he realizes that the hulk of a man is actually Trent Peterson, the man he spent his whole college years crushing on from a short distance, he can't help but be excited to see him.
Trent has no idea who the man is who shows up at his door as a contest winner. He has no idea that Jason doesn't know The MeatGrinder but knows his real life identity. When Jason doesn't seem all that interested in seeing his championship belt or even understand anything about wrestling, he decides to take his chances in seducing the cute guy.
I had a bit of trouble getting into the rhythm of the story, mostly because Jason's mind is somewhat erratic. So it did take me a while to figure out their history and how exactly Jason knew who Trent was. Still, the story was so delightful to read just because it was so hilarious that I couldn't help but fall in love with it. Jason and Trent immediately have a kind of repartee, always hovering around the fact that Jason isn't really a wrestling fan even though he's trying to pretend he is. And when Trent gets in the game of teasing him back, the story really picked up.
This is definitely one that you'll want to read just for the laughs. While there is a relationship of sorts, it's more the pre-relationship and initial attraction than the thing itself, and the story ends with a HFN ending. This was the first story I picked up because I've reviewed Kyle Adams stories in the past and really liked them. But, I've read several since this one and this still remains one of my favorite just because it's fun :)
If you've read any of Adams' 'dirty' freebies you'll have a good idea what to expect here. The sex content is dialled down, but the banter is given full reign - I'd advise against reading this in public; sudden grins, snorts or giggles tend to alarm people!
It's an undemanding plot, no sob stories or drawn out histories, only what's needed to set the scene. Very refreshing that! You get a really good feel for the characters without knowing every detail about them; I’m not even sure what Jason does for a living, when I try to check I loose time giggling at his 'incredible, super excitement'...
There are some great scenes but the real winner is the dialogue. The dialogue comes over natural and very funny. There are so many lines I loved I could quote the whole book. The story feels a little choppy in places, but never enough to put me off reading; the book left me feeling happy so it's hard to find much at fault.
I loved these guys; Jason who’s so very unimpressed by all the wrestling hype and Mr MeatGrinder/Trent, who isn't taken in for a minute, and who will need all his wrestling training to have any hope of keeping pace. Trent may be hot, but The Jason has snark to spare. The chemistry between them sparkles and is equal parts humour and attraction, with some heat thrown in.
With the ending I thought certain developments seemed sudden and dramatic, but liked that they were already in play and not a result of the new relationship. The whole book takes place over one day, so it's early for a HEA but a great start to a very lively relationship. I'd have liked to see Jason attend the match and to read his interview, mainly because I loved these characters and didn't want to leave them.
You don’t need to follow wrestling to enjoy this (Jason certainly doesn’t), it’s a real mood lifter for a miserable day, complete with Turtle backpack.
I really enjoyed this story! It was fun, funny and sexy! Just what a short story should be.
Jason is a competition junkie! He enters every competition going! Surely he will win something one day, and much like your ship coming in when you're at the airport ... when he does win, he wins a prize that he can't even remember entering in for, and he then discovers that the Meatgrinder he has won is not a kitchen appliance either - but a pro Wrestler. Well, a day with the Meatgrinder, not the actual guy. Jason, however, knew the guy before his stage name kicked in, so he is quite excited to see him again after all these years.
I found Trent, the Meatgrinder, quite charming. He certainly didn't take himself too seriously even though he did feel, rightfully so, that as a sportsman he deserved some respect. Wrestlers may stage their fights, but the level of fitness and finesse required is still that of a professional sportsman. Jason was funny and had a low level snark that was cute - but he too was mindful of showing a level of respect by playing the excited fan. Not that he totally fooled Trent. The days activities made for a fun read! I guess my only disappointment was that Trent didn't remember Jason from before. What? I love romance and sweet sappy romantic twists are cute!! But I still loved the story and read it with a big grin on my face, throughout. And I would love to get more of Jason and Trent in a full blown novel!
Brilliantly witty! Absolutely loved this story! Loved the characters, loved the plot and adored the humour.
Jason, who knows absolutely nothing about wrestling (just like me!), wins a contest consisting of a full day spent with The MeatGrinder, a wrestling star. Turn out Jason knew and crushed on The MeatGrinder back in school, back when The MeatGrinder was plain-old Trent and before he become famous. Jason, is also not the same guy he was in school, with improved looks he has also lost his shyness.
Prize Package had me laughing out loud on nearly every page. The comments made by Jason were brilliantly witty. He was definitely the star of this story!
Favourite line.....Jason in response to The MeatGrinder (Trent) flexing his pecs..."Oh my, you big stud, your dancing boobs have enchanted me with your hypnotic sexual magnitudeness."...that basically sums it up!
What a fun read! Not much in the way of sexy times, but full of witty banter and charm. Jason Smith wins a day with pro wrestler, The MeatGrinder, from a contest he doesn't even remember entering. Funny thing is he's not even a wrestling fan. I loved watching him try to fake it!
This was a great little read! I loved Jason - he made me laugh out loud, he was such an adorable person. I also loved that he had a turtle shell backpack :D I just wish there was more to this - I'd love to have seen more of their relationship and how things progressed. Brilliant, though, and I'll definitely be revisiting this in the future when I'm looking for something quick to put a smile back on my face.
This was a quick and witty and sexy little romp with the kind of fun and quirky - but real, with little peeks of vulnerability that just make you go awww - characters only Kyle seems able to create. He's outdone himself with this one. I'm looking forward to (and planning on harassing Kyle for) a future anniversary or, well, anything more from these two.
I know I'm never going to be disappointed with one of Kyle's books and this sexy little short had me giggling from the first page. I loved the bit about the juggling nipple:D
4.5 stars! This story had me laugh just a few pages in. Another must read from Kyle Adams! The one downside? As usual I wish it was longer I fall into his stories and want them to keep going and going. Great read!
Just imagine winning the grand prize in an online contest. Wouldn’t you be ecstatic? However, since you enter gazillions of contests, which one did you win? The kind of grown-up winner in this book recognizes he doesn’t really qualify as a “fan” that the contest was targeted, but he is going to wing it. That is good, since he ends up with a much bigger prize than he could have possibly imagined initially. At the core this story is a really feel-good one. There are bumps, bruises, and embarrassments along the way, but I enjoyed the ride along with the winner.
Jason Smith has grown up and left his acne, braces, and shyness all behind him. He is sort of a swinger these days. Now he has won a contest that obligates him to spend an entire day hanging out with some jock named “MeatGrinder”. That actually sounded kind of lame to Jason. However, Jason makes a connection in regard to this “MeatGrinder” and a secret heartthrob from his days in college. Jason certainly earns his stripes and then some by the end of that grueling but tantalizing day.
Trent Peterson, aka the “MeatGrinder”, is a very dedicated, hard working professional wrestler. He cottons onto Jason’s shaky ‘wrestling knowledge’ and extremely atypical fan behavior rather quickly. However, Trent is totally focused on taking Jason through every detail of every activity that was dutifully spelled out to him knowing that a true die-hard “MeatHead” would have been panting at his side all day knowing what was to come next. Trent, however, knows Jason is not really a die-hard “MeatHead” but he is rather comely…hot even. Trent turns out to be a masterful game player leading him and Jason down a very hot and rewarding path for both of them.
Trent, “The MeatGrinder”, is just such a cutie for a professional jock. I was very impressed with how Trent manages to go through all the steps stipulated by the promotion while masterfully wooing Jason. He knows some very alluring personal as well as professional ‘clinches’ and he and Jason eventually skyrocket up the ladder of intimacy. It takes a bit of time until they get there, but hopefully you will still find the bumps and grinds during their day together as fun and amusing as I did.
