About the author

Many works, including Siddhartha (1922) and Steppenwolf (1927), of German-born Swiss writer Hermann Hesse concern the struggle of the individual to find wholeness and meaning in life; he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946.

Other best-known works of this poet, novelist, and painter include The Glass Bead Game , which, also known as Magister Ludi, explore a search of an individual for spirituality outside society.

In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later. Young Germans desiring a different and more "natural" way of life at the time of great economic and technological progress in the country, received enthusiastically Peter Camenzind , first great novel of Hesse.

Throughout Germany, people named many schools. In 1964, people founded the Calwer Hermann-Hesse-Preis, awarded biennially, alternately to a German-language literary journal or to the translator of work of Hesse to a foreign language. The city of Karlsruhe, Germany, also associates a Hermann Hesse prize.

Νομίζω πως ο Έσσε ειναι μια φύση κατεξοχήν αιθεροβάμων κι αυτή η αιθεροβασία του διαμορφώνει την ατμόσφαιρα των δημιουργιών του και αποδίδει το χαρακτήρα μιας ανθρωπιστικής ποιότητας στα αφηγήματά του. Έτσι και σε αυτή τη σύντομη νουβέλα του διαφαίνονται οι προσωπικοί του προβληματισμοί γύρω από τη σχέση του ανθρώπου με  τη φύση, μια ολιστική θεώρηση για το περιβάλλον και μια ρουσωϊκή αγάπη για όλα τα στοιχεία γύρω μας. Ωστόσο, η τελική επιλογή του ήρωά του αφορά σε μια πιο σύγχρονή του  και εγκόσμια βιοθεωρία, όπου η εξέλιξη και ο πολιτισμός, χωρίς να αγνοούν ολα τα ανωτέρω, δεν μπορούν να  παραγκωνιστούν, παρά μόνο να αγκαλιάσουν θερμά τις ανάγκες της ανθρώπινης φύσης ακόμα και με τη ματαιοδοξία της, αν και στα στοιχειώδη χαρακτηριστικά της, χωρίς τις συνήθεις υπερβολές. Μια ώριμη και γλυκιά θεώρηση του κόσμου, από τον πιο ευγενικό και καλόκαρδο ίσως λογοτέχνη που υπήρξε ποτέ.

I think Hermann Esse is a kind of a daydreamer and this particularity shapes the atmosphere of his creations and gives  a humanistic quality to his narratives.
In this short novel, his personal reflections on the relationship between man and nature, a holistic view of the environment and the love for all the elements around us are beautifully revealed.
However, the final choice of his hero concerns a more contemporary perspective of life, where evolution and culture can not be slighted, but  must warmly embrace the needs of human nature even with its vanity and all its flaws. A mature and sweet view of the world, by perhaps the most kind and warm-hearted writer ever.

Επιστροφή στον Έσσε μετά από πολλά χρόνια, με ένα αίσθημα ανικανοποίητου.
Η ιστορία κόβεται απότομα με ένα βεβιασμένο, αμερικάνικου τύπου happy end, ωστόσο έχει στο σύνολό της ενδιαφέρον.
Αν μη τι άλλο, ο Έσσε είναι πιστός στο να υπενθυμίζει, μέσα από ιστορίες-μεταφορές, την ανάγκη της ανακάλυψης του εαυτού, κάτι που εκτιμούσα στα 18 και συνεχίζω να εκτιμώ στα 26. Είναι μέχρι να τον ανακαλύψω πράγματι, υποθέτω.
