B. Jeyamohan (also credited as Jayamohan) is one of the most influential contemporary, Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic from Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He entered the world of Tamil literature in the 1990s, Jeyamohan has had impacted the Tamil literary landscape as it emerged from the post-modern phase. His best-known and critically acclaimed work is Vishnupuram, a deeply layered fantasy set as a quest through various schools of Indian philosophy and mythology. His other well-known novels include Rubber, Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural, Kanyakumari, Kaadu, Pani Manithan, Eazhaam Ulagam, and Kotravai. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Drawing on the strength of his life experiences and extensive travel around India, Jeyamohan is able to re-examine and interpret the essence of India's rich literary and classical traditions.

அப்பா முதலில் வழங்கல் துறையில் வேலைபார்த்தார். பின் பத்திரப்பதிவுத்துறையில் எழுத்தராக வேலைபார்த்து ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அவரது பணிக்காலத்தில் பெரும்பகுதி அருமனை பத்திரப்பதிவு அலுவலகத்தில் கழிந்தது. 1984ல் தன் அறுபத்தி ஒன்றாம் வயதில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார்.

In a Nutshell: A collection of stories all based on real-life people. The first ever translation of Tamil writer Jeyamohan’s work to English. Slice-of-life writing, which rarely works for me. Not sure if this will easily find an audience among non-Indians in the USA as the content is quite parochial. Better suited to readers who enjoy non-linear, meandering narratives and preferably have some familiarity with the (South) India of historical and recent times.

Jeyamohan is a prolific Tamil writer, currently based in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. He has won many prestigious awards for his writing. This is his first work to be translated to English. It was initially published in Tamil in 2011 as "Aram - Unmai Manithargalin Kathai". The first English translation was published in India in 2022. This US edition of the English version is due for release in August 2025.

India has twenty-two official languages and plenty of unofficial languages. With many of these boasting of plenty of acclaimed authors, it is nigh on impossible to know every single talented regional writer, especially as vernacular fiction rarely gets the limelight beyond its particular home-state. As a non-Tamilian, I hadn’t even heard of Jeyamohan until I spotted this collection on NetGalley. His bio and the Indian setting made me grab this collection. Unfortunately, his writing style wasn’t my cup of tea.

The collection begins with an note by the author, introducing the theme of “aram”, which is Tamil for the Sanskrit word "dharma" (close to "duty" in English.) He states that he wrote these stories in about forty days – quite a shocker to me, especially as the book is quite hefty at 400 pages. His intent is to celebrate the “triumph of humanity”, and as the title indicates, the book contains “stories of the true” – real-life people who are true in their intent, dedicated in their work, honest about their duties, or unfiltered in their brashness. There is an extended note at the end, providing details of the more popular “true” personalities in the book. This is fairly helpful.

Though so lengthy, the book contains only twelve stories. The author’s narrative technique makes the stories feel even lengthier. He has a peculiar, non-linear style of writing, whereby the stories often seem to begin with one topic and end somewhere else altogether, though the central actor stays in focus throughout. Even when the narrative is sequential, the storytelling is very meandering. Such slice-of-life writing makes it very tricky for me to concentrate on the content. Even the endings don’t offer any satisfaction in this approach.

Another challenge for me was the storytelling approach. A majority of the stories proceed primarily through conversations. These could be presented in the form of an interview, in which case the author inserts himself into the story as the interviewer, or like a biographical presentation, but with all the main events coming through dialogues. Such a writing technique, highly dependent on extended back-and-forth chitchat, never works for me. I prefer a balanced approach with enough descriptions and introspections to support the dialogues. Else, the effect is quite distanced, as if you are overhearing two strangers talk endlessly bouncing from topic to topic; after a point, you will lose interest and start zoning out.

I have read only two other Tamil translations prior to this. One was the brilliant novel ‘Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat’ by Perumal Murugan, where the narrative was episodic but structured. The second was by an author whom Jeyamohan considers his ‘guru’: Sundara Ramaswamy’s ‘The Tamarind Tree’. Structurally, Ramaswamy’s book feels closer to Jeyamohan’s writing style as it also goes from topic to topic. However, the key difference is that ‘The Tamarind Tree’ is a composite novel, with the titular tree playing the central role in the episodic events surrounding it. ‘Stories of the True’, on the other hand, is a short story collection. So when every story is independent of the rest but each story still feels like a set of mini-episodes, the overall result is quite disjointed and jumpy. Basically, all three books are episodic for various reasons, but only Jeyamohan's didn't hit the mark for me.

Given that this is being released in the US market, I am honestly not sure how much the average American would be able to connect with these tales. Every story is quintessentially (South)Indian, with plenty of references to the traditions, beliefs, politics, and social mores of that region. The stories are somewhat either historical or from the recent past, which further widens the gap between content and reader. Unless the reader has some basic familiarity with the ethos of South India, they might not be able to relate to anything in the book, be it plot, characters, atmosphere, or writing.

As always, I tried to rate the stories individually. But after the halfway mark, I just gave up on the rating as every story seemed to go the same way. The content and the characters were somewhat distinct but the writing style created déjà vu. Most of my ratings landed between 2 to 3 stars, with just two exceptions going to 3.5 stars: 'The Palm-Leaf Cross' and 'One World'. Strangely, the “true person” in both these stories was a white man settled in Tamil Nadu.

On the whole, while I do appreciate knowing about yet another talented regional Indian writer, I also regret that his writing style isn't for me. Perhaps if you are the kind of reader who doesn’t mind conversation-dominated or slice-of-life storytelling, this collection might work better for you.

அறம் - ஒரு புத்தகத்தால் அதை வாசிப்பவரை என்ன செய்து விட முடியும் என்ற கேள்விக்கு உச்சி மண்டைல ஒரு கொட்டு வைக்குற மாதிரி ஒரு பதில். இந்த புத்தகத்தில் மொத்தம் 13 கதைகள். ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு மாதிரியான பாடத்தை அல்லது கருத்தை நம்மை அறியாமலேயே நம்முள் புதைத்து விட்டுப்போகின்றன . வாழக்கையில் மறுபடியும் பல முறை படித்துப்பார்க்க தூண்டுபவை.

இதை படிக்கத்தொடங்கிய நாள் முதல் இன்று வரை ஏதோ ஒரு ரூபத்தில் இதில் வரும் ஏதோ ஒரு கேரக்டர் அல்லது ஒரு சீன் என் மனதில் சற்றும் எதிர்பாராத நேரத்தில் அழகாக தலையை காட்டி விட்டு, "நான் இனி உன்னுள் ஒரு பகுதி" என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு மறைகின்றன. இதை படிப்பதற்கு முன் இருந்த எனக்கும் படித்த பின் இருக்கும் எனக்கும் நிறைய வித்தியாசங்கள் என்று என்னாலே உணர முடிக்கின்ற அளவுக்கு என்னை பாதித்த புத்தகம் இந்த அறம்.

ஒரு ஏழை எழுத்தாளனின் உழைப்பை சுரண்ட நினைத்த தன மகனிடமிருந்து நீதி வாங்க தன்னையே வருத்திக்கொண்ட ஆச்சி, எதையும் எதிர்பாராமல் வருபவர்களுக்கு வயறு முட்ட சோறு போடும் கெத்தேல் சாஹிப், யானைகளுடன் அந்த காட்டில் வாழும் டாக்டர் கே கே, காட்டு வாழ்க்கையின் அழகையும் மனிதனின் மனதையும் அளந்து பேசும் வார்த்தைகள், அவருக்கு விருது வாங்க போராடும் அந்த கதையின் ப்ரோடோகோனிஸ்ட், கன்னியாகுமரியின் ஒற்றை கால் தவத்தை தனது பாட்டியோட ஒப்பிட்டு வருந்தும் ராமன், மயில் கழுத்தில் ராமன்-பாலசுப்ரமணியனின் உரையாடல்கள், இமயமலையை அடையும் கோமல் மற்றும் அங்கே அவருக்கு கிடைத்த அனுபவம், கிறிஸ்டியானிட்டிக்கு மக்களை மதம்மாற்ற வந்த சாமுவேல் பார்வையிலிருந்து அதை பார்க்கும் அனுபவம், காரி டேவிஸ் கூறும் ஒரே உலகம் பிலோஸோபி மற்றும் அதற்கு அவர் தரும் விளக்கம் என இந்த புத்தகம் எத்தனையோ வகையில் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது.

இன்று ஜெயமோகநின் அறம் (சிறுகதைகள்) புத்தகத்தை படித்து முடித்தேன்.

நான் என்ன பெரிய புடிங்கிய என்று என்னை கேட்கவைத்த நவல் இது. ஒவொரு சிறுகதையும் ஏன் உள்ளதையும் அன்மவயும் வருடியதேன்றே சொல்லவேண்டும்.

தமிழ் தெரிந்த அத்தனை பெரும் படிக்கவேண்டிய புத்தகம் இது .

Just finished reading Jeymohan's Aram Novel - This was one of the Magical Journeys i have travelled. A must read for everyone (its a tamil novel, i am not sure whether it is avaliable in other languages).

This was a fantastic collection of short-stories, almost all of which were based on real people who tried in big ways and small to help people, animals, and the world around them.

It���s translated from the Tamil and I feel certain that people who know better than I would deem this a very good translation. There were just enough Tamil words, culture, foods, historical figures, etc., that I had to do some research, but not so much that it interrupted the flow of the stories for English readers.

As with all short story collections, some stories were weaker than others, but the strong stories were so moving, heartbreaking, and hopeful that together they earned this book 5 stars. The standout stories: He Who Will Not Bow, The Elephant Doctor, The Meat Talley, One Hundred Chairs, The Palm Leaf Cross each contained more story, more character development, more insight into human nature, and more emotional weight in 20 to 40 pages than some novels provide in 300 pages.

I cannot recommend this collection strongly enough.

🔆அறம் என்னும் புத்தகத்தில் உள்ள 12 கதைகளும் - நிஜ நிகழ்வுகளே. தன் வாழ்க்கையில் சந்தித்த இந்த மனிதர்களை - நாமும் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டி எழுத்தாளர் ஜெயமோகன் அவர்கள் , நமக்கு இந்தப் படைப்பை தந்துள்ளார் .

🔆ஜெயமோகன் அவர்களின் படைப்புகளில் மிகவும் பிரபலமான புத்தகம் யானை டாக்டர். அதில் வரும் டாக்டர் . கே. உட்பட இன்னும் 11 மனிதர்களைப் பற்றிய புத்தகம் இது .

🔆எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த / பாதித்த 2 கதைகளின் சுருக்கங்களைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன் .

🔆மகிழ்ச்சியும் , கோலத்தையும் மனிதர்களிடத்தில் காட்டும் அதே அளவிற்கு , உணவின் மேலும் நாம் காட்டுகிறோம் . ஆனால் எந்தவொரு வித்தியாசம் இல்லாமல் , உணவை பரிமாறுவது உணவகங்களில் மட்டும் தான் --- அதுவும் பணம் இல்லாமல் உணவை மட்டும் அளித்தால் – அது தான் நம் கெத்தேல் சாகிப் . குடும்பச் சூழ்நிலை மற்றும் பொருளாதார காரணங்களுக்காக உணவு கிடைக்காமல் இருப்போர்க்கு அவர் உணவகம் தான் புகழிடம் .

🔆பழங்குடி சமூகத்தில் இருக்கும் தாய் , மற்ற மக்களுடன் மகன் பழகக் கூடாது . தன் கூடவே தெருவில் இருக்கு வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறாள் . அப்படியிருக்க தர்மாவிற்கு படிக்க உதவி கிடைக்கிறது . குடிமையில் பணியில் சேர்ந்து - ஒரு மாவட்டத்தை நிர்வாகிக்கும் பதவிக்கு வருகிறான் . குறை தீர்ப்பு குட்டத்தில் புகுந்து ரகளை செய்து, குப்பையில் இருக்கும் எச்சில் இலையை எடுத்து சாப்பிட்டது ஒரு பிச்சைக்காரி மட்டும் இல்லை , தங்கள் மாவட்ட ஆட்சியரின் தாய் என்பதை அலுவலகத்தில் உள்ளவர்கள் அறிந்து கொள்கிறார்கள் . அதன் பின்னர் என்ன ஆயிற்று – அதுவே நூறு நாற்காலிகள் . இதற்கு முன்பும் , பின்பும் எவ்வளவு கதைகள் படித்திருந்தாலும் - என்னை மிகவும் பாதித்த கதை இது .

ಆನೆ ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಕಥೆಗಳು - ತಮಿಳು ಮೂಲ ಜೆಯಮೋಹನ್

ಜೆಯಮೋಹನ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಕತೆಗಳ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಯಾಕೆ ಓದಿಲ್ಲ‌ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ವೆಬ್ಸೈಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಅತೀ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮಹಾಭಾರತವ ಆಧರಿಸಿದ ಆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ 2014ರಿಂದ 2020ರವರೆಗೆ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು. ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು ಸಂಪುಟಗಳ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು ಸಾವಿರ ಪುಟಗಳ 'ವೆನ್ಮುರಸು' ಹೆಸರಿನ ಆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ , ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಓದಿದವರು ಇದ್ದಾರಾ,ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.‌ ಆದರೆ ಟ್ವಿಟ್ಟರ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೋ ಅದರ ತುಣುಕುಗಳ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷಿಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ಅದು ಪರ್ವ, ಹಾಗೂ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಜಾಡಿನ ತೂಕದ ಕೃತಿ ಎಂದು ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಜೆಯಮೋಹನ್ ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಸಾಹಸಕ್ಕೆಳಸುವುದು ಇದೇ ಮೊದಲಲ್ಲ.

'ಆರಾಂ' ಎಂಬ ಅವರ ಬಹುಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಕತೆಗಳ ಸಂಕಲನದ ಕತೆಗಳು ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವು.

ಕೇರಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ,ಗೆಳೆಯನ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಮರುಗಿ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆಗೆಳಸಿದ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅಪ್ಪ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ನೊಂದ ಇವರು ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು ಸಮೀಪದ ಕುಂಬಳೆ ರೈಲ್ವೆ ಸ್ಟೇಷನ್ ಬಳಿ ‌ಮನಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾದವರು.

ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ರಚಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ, ತಮಿಳಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಬರೆದವರು.

ಇವರ ' ವಿಷ್ಣುಪುರಂ' ಕೃತಿ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ‌ ಕಳೆದ ಶತಮಾನದ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಎಂಬ ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ.‌ದುರದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್ ಅದಿನ್ನೂ ಕನ್ನಡ, ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಕೃತಿಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಿಂದ ' ವಿಷ್ಣುಪುರ ಸರ್ಕಲ್ ' ಎಂಬ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳ ಕೂಟ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾಗಿ ಅದರಿಂದ ಬಹುಮಾನ ಕೊಡುವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯೂ ಶುರುವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಇದ್ಯಾಕೆ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ‌ ಎಂಬುದರ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ ಬಹು ಸುಲಭ. ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಲು ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಆ ಕೃತಿಯ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಲು ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಂಪರೆ,ಪುರಾಣಗಳ ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಬೇಕು.‌ (ಅದರ ತುಣುಕು ಅನುವಾದಗಳ ನಾನು ಓದಿದ್ದೆ. ಇಡೀ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಆಡಿಯೋ ಬುಕ್ ಯೂ ಟ್ಯೂಬ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ ತಮಿಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ) .ನಮ್ಮ ಅನುವಾದಕರಲ್ಲಿ 99% ಜನರೂ ಇನ್ನೂ ರಷ್ಯನ್ ಪ್ರಣೀತ ವಾದಗಳ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿರುವವರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ಅನುವಾದಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಫಿಲ್ಟರ್ ಆಗಿಯೇ ಬರುವುದು. ನಮ್ಮ ದುರ್ದೈವ.

ಜೆಯಮೋಹನ್‌, ಆರ್‌ಎಸ್‌ಎಸ್ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದವರು ‌,ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಎಡದ ಕಡೆಯೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದವರು. ಸಾಹಿತಿಗೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ದೂರವಾದವರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಓದಿದವೆಲ್ಲ ಅವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸದಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಿವೆ.

ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ‌ವಿಷಯ ಏನೆಂದರೆ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಬಾಲಾ‌ ಅವರ ' ನಾನ್ ಕಡವುಳ್' ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಇವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆಧರಿತ.

ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಸಂಕಲನ ಆರಾಮ್ ಸಂಕಲನದ ಕೆಲವು ಕತೆಗಳ ಅನುವಾದ. ಅನುವಾದ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.‌ಓದುವಾಗ ತಮಿಳು ಫ್ಲೇವರ್ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.‌
ಆದರೆ ಇದರ ಕತೆಗಳು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಾಕುವುದು ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ.

ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಆನೆ ‌ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ,ಊಟದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ ಕತೆಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಅಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸಿಬಿಟ್ಟವು.

ಇವೆರಡು ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನಾದರೂ ಓದಿ.

enjoyed reading "ulagam yavaiyum" . "Peruvali" is a class story with all the metaphors.

What it is to be humane is very different from just being human. These 12 short stories based on some wonderful people and compassion - can heal you and haunt you with a language that is in equal parts cathartic and causterising.

Jeyamohan writes like a man possessed. He switches the tamil to the land the story is set and create narrators who are in awe of the central character of each story. The stories take off slowly setting the canvas and in more than two-three stories we look forward to that one or two sentences that will make this entire work glow. They do not hold back the punches - in using language to hurt or console.

My favorite 3 stories were
1. Sottru Kanakku - The amazing story of Kettel Sahib who fed thousands of people free of cost without any expectation and how it transformed lives.
2. Olai Siluvai - Sommervel's missionary life and one of his student's finding God in service. This tale tore me apart in the last few pages.
3. Aram - The titular story on the power of words

There are two other stories which explains pain (peruvali as "mattharu thayir") and longing ("Thaabam") that speak to your heart of explaining something that is almost inexplicable. Giving words to emotions is an art like no other and Jeyamohan aced it.

This was a gifted book and I am glad I deserved this book. This book will go on to be one of my prized possessions.

Fascinating stories and the translation is par excellence. Many of the tales are based on real persons – both local as well as foreign.
As a Palliative Care Physician, I have been dealing with cancer patients with intractable pain and spiritual suffering and existential issues. Thus, pain perception is a subject that fascinates me.

‘To observe pain is a great practice. No meditation can equal it. Pain reveals everything – who we are, how our mind and intellect function, all of it. What is pain? It’s a state that’s just a little different from our normal state of being. But our mind yearns to go back to that erstwhile normalcy … that’s the problem with being in pain. Half the pain will disappear if we begin to observe it. Of course, there are severe pains too. Of the kind that goes to show that man isn’t so great after all and he is just another animal.’ ...
‘Jeyamohan, the pain’s like an infant, now. It squats on the hip, its nose dripping with snot and wails non-stop. It wakes up suddenly at night and troubles the life out of me. But it is my pain. It has emerged from my body. So, isn’t it natural that I will feel affection for it? Let the wretched thing be. We will make a fine human being of it, all right?’

About suffering

The curd’s being churned in a pot with a churner. The pot is our body. The curd is the life within. And the churning rod is the suffering. Suffering throws life about every which way. Have you seen how curd looks when it’s being churned? It will gather to one side, froth and rise, and threaten to leap out any second. At once the churner will chase after the curd. Afraid that it’ll be kicked out, the curd will rush to the other side. Not moment’s rest can it afford. Foaming and frothing, huffing and puffing … the great suffering man is put through is much the same. The turbulence of it all- that is torment...
When you churn suffering, you get clarity.

His searingly vivid description of the caste-based brutality and inequality

…to be given a name was a luxury in itself. Since his father was born dark-skinned, he was called Karuthaan. His younger brother had prominent lips like the sundeli mouse, and so he was named Sundan. The younger sister was somewhat fair-skinned, therefore, she was Vellakutty. It was indeed like naming dogs. Not the ones that belonged to caste landowners. They were well named. I am talking about stray dogs...
Each such worker-caste group had a leader of its own. Within his egg-sized dominion the leader was king, with unassailable authority to kill and bury too. As for the rest, they ranked lower than even the mud beneath his feet...
Every person on the estate was assigned a place in its descending chain of command. Spit wove its way through, adding definition to the rungs of hierarchy. If the overseer spat on the wage slave, the slave could not wipe the spit off until the overseer was out of sight. If the juice from chewed betel leaf found its way from the infuriated Kariyastha on to the newcomer he had to beat it with a submissive smile. The Kariyastha had to be ready to offer a spittoon to the Karainairs if they so much as pursed their lips with a mouthful of betel leaves. And the royalty may pay a visit to his home, the Karianair himself had to follow them with a spittoon in hand.

The yeoman work done by Christian missionaries in colonial India (for that matter, even in the present day) in the field of health and education is nullified in their zest for conversion of Hindus to their faith. They will especially target the vulnerable – whether due to caste exclusion, poverty or illness – and offer inducements of money, housing, jobs or spiritual salvation. I have encountered numerous such cases where terminally ill cancer patients are tempted with salvation and even freedom from pain and suffering if they convert to Christianity; patients gasping for breath or in a delirium are not spared! Here is a poor woman saddled with multiple children and whose husband is on his deathbed in a Mission hospital after a fall from a palm tree

Then why don’t all of you convert? If you convert, you will find a way through life. I will recommend this boy to the London Missionary Society. I will ask them to give him a job here, at the hospital…The nurse-amma spoke up now. ‘Look here, Sayyib’s saying that if you convert and join the vedham – the way of Christ – Sayyib will have this fellow admitted in a school and get him an education. He’ll also make some arrangement for your well-being. You and your children will have kanji to drink. What do you say?’ she asked loudly.

ಬಂಗಾರದಂಥಾ ಕಥೆಗಳು! Hopelessly bad translation.

ಈ ಸಂಕಲನವು ಅನುವಾದದ ಅವಗುಣಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮೀರಿ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗುವಂಥಾ ಸ್ವಯಂಪ್ರಭೆಯ ಐದು ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. 'ಆನೆ ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್' ಮತ್ತು 'ಊಟದ ಲೆಕ್ಕ' ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಆಪ್ತವೆನಿಸುವ ಕಥೆಗಳು. 'ಧರ್ಮ' ಮತ್ತು 'ತಾಯಿಯ ಪಾದ' ಕಥೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಪಾತ್ರದ ದೈನ್ಯತೆ, ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಗಂಭೀರತೆಯನ್ನು ಗಾಢವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿ ಚಿತ್ತ ಸ್ವಾಸ್ಥ್ಯ ಕಲಕಲು ಶಕ್ತವಾಗಿವೆ. 'ಒಂದೇ ಜಗತ್ತು' ಕಥೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಓದು ಎನಿಸಿತು. ಆದರೂ ಐದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಮನೋಗುಣದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಾನೇ ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದಷ್ಟು ಸಂತೋಷ ನೀಡಿದ ಕೃತಿ.

ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಗೂ ತಮಿಳು ಭಾಷೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಿಡಿತವುಳ್ಳ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಮುಂದೆಂದಾದರೂ ಆರಂ ಕಥಾಸಂಕಲನದ ಹನ್ನೆರಡೂ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಚೆಂದವಾಗಿ ಭಾಷಾಂತರಿಸಿ ಅದರ ಓದಿನ ಸವಿ ನಮಗೆ ಒದಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಆಸೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. Fingers crossed.

Stories of the True is a collection of twelve stories that are centered around the concept of 'aram', the Tamil equivalent of the Sanskrit word 'dharma'. Full of wisdom and knowledge, these stories are neither completely fiction nor nonfiction. Based on real people, these stories stand at the intersection of truth and righteousness.

In an unfair and corrupt world, these stories bring forth the heroism, kindness, sorrows, and immense strength shown by people, that often goes unnoticed and unrewarded. But nature isn't corrupt, it has its own way of rewarding the worthy. These are the stories of truth and compassion. Some stories were mind-boggling, while some were deeply moving, but all were thought-provoking!💛

As is mentioned in the translator's note :

"These stories are not simple expositions of virtue. Reaching far beyond the understanding of ethics as dichromatic, immutable codes of conduct, the narratives delve into deeper and more complex internal dilemmas."

The book begins with the author's note followed by a Preface. That preface was enough to motivate me, guide me, and more than anything, enlighten me. It was the author's story. His story of overcoming his hardships, changing his perspective, and his journey of introspection, resulted in this gem of a book.

The translator, Priyamvada Ramkumar, has masterfully translated these epic stories, making sure that their very essence, sensibility, and beauty, remain intact. She kept some of the Tamil words untranslated, to help us in comprehending the stories the way they are in the Tamil original.

I found the stories to be absorbing, gripping, and thought-provoking! Loved them! 💛

என்னை மிகவும் ரசிக்க வைத்த கதைகள் யானை டாக்டர்,சோற்றுக்கணக்கு, வணங்கான்,நூறு நாற்காலிகள், உலகம் யாவும், மாற்சிலுவை, பெருவலி.

ஒவ்வொரு கதைகளும் ஒரு ஒரு உன்னதம் ததும்பி கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. என்னை எனக்கே அறிமுகம் செய்தன என்றுதான் அறத்தை என்னால் சொல்ல முடிகிறது. அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு அலாதியான வாசிப்பு தான் அறம். என்னை ஆற்றுப்படுத்தி உள்ளது இன்னும் மனிதனாக்கியுள்ளது. மனிதர்களின் மேன்மையை இன்னும் என்னை நேசிக்க வைத்துள்ளது,பல இடங்களில் என்னை நானே மறந்து மூழ்கி அவ்உலகத்திற்கு சென்றுவிட்டேன் இம்ம மனிதர்களைப் போல நானும் ஏன் இல்லை என்ற கேள்வி என்னுடன் பலமுறை எழுந்துள்ளது.

நான் உலகத்தின் மனிதன். உலகமெல்லாம் எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் ஒரே ஒரு கடவுச் சீட்டு, இந்த எண்ணமே மிகச் சிறந்த எண்ணம்.
தான் செய்துவிட்ட அழிவை அவன் அக கண்ணால் பார்க்க இயன்றால் அவன் மனம் எப்படி எல்லாம் அவனை கேள்வி கேட்கும் என்பதற்கு இந்த கதை ஒரு சாட்சி.

வாசித்தவரையில் இது ஒரு ஆகச் சிறந்த சிறுகதை தொகுப்பு. மறுவாசிப்பு என்பது நிச்சயம் செய்வேன்.

ஒவ்வொரு முறை சொந்த ஊருக்குப் போகும்போதும், அதிகாலை இருள் நேரத்தில் ரயில்��ண்டி ஊரை நெருங்க நெருங்க மனதில் இனம் புரியாத ஒரு உற்சாகமும், மகிழ்ச்சியும் ஏற்படும். அதுவும் ரயில் நிலையத்துக்குள் வண்டி நுழையும்போது ஊர்ப்பெயர் தாங்கி நிற்கும் அந்த மஞ்சள் நிறப் பெயர்ப்பலகையை கண்டதும் ஏதோ குழந்தைப் பருவத்துக்கே திரும்பியது போல் ஒரு நிம்மதி தோன்றும். வீட்டை விட்டு வேலைக்காக வெளியூர்களில் தங்கத்தொடங்கி கிட்டத்தட்ட இருபது வருடங்கள் ஆகியும் இன்றும் ஊருக்குச் செல்லும்போதெல்லாம் இந்த அனுபவம் மட்டும் மாறுவதில்லை. நானும் பலமுறை யோசித்ததுண்டு - எத்தனையோ ஊர்கள் சுற்றி வந்தும் வசதிகளும் வட்டமும் குறைந்த இந்த ஊரின் மீது ஏன் இப்படி ஒரு பிடிப்பு, ஒரு ஒட்டு என்று. என் தாய் தந்தையர் இன்னும் இங்கே வாழ்ந்து வருவதாலா? நான் சிறு வயது முதலே பிறந்து வளர்ந்து வாழ்ந்த ஊர் என்பதாலா? கல்வியும் நட்பும் காதலும் காமமும் ஆகிய எனது எல்லா உணர்வுகளும் முதலில் வேரோடி வளர இடம் தந்த நாற்றங்கால் என்பதாலா? இன்னும் இந்த ஊரில் 'இது என் சொந்த ஊர்' என்று ஒரு ஒட்டுறவு ஏற்பட என்ன காரணம்? நான் பயின்ற பள்ளி, வணங்கிய கோவில், அப்பா கை பிடித்து ஞாயிறு தோறும் சென்ற சந்தை, நண்பர்களோடு ஓடி விளையாடிய மைதானம், காதலியின் கையை முதலில் பற்றிய தெருமுனை, அம்மாவுக்கு முதலில் சொந்தக் காசில் பட்டுப்புடவை வாங்கித்தந்த கடை, பரிச்சயமான அன்னியர்கள் - இது மட்டுமா காரணம் அல்லது இன்னும் ஏதேனுமா என்றெல்லாம் மனம் யோசிக்க ஆரம்பிக்கும்.

தமிழில் புத்தகம் வாசிப்பதும் கூட அப்படி ஒரு அனுபவம் தான். பிற மொழிகளில் கவிதை முதல் கணிதம் வரை, அறிவியல் முதல் ஆதி மனிதம் வரை எல்லாமே படிக்க ஆரம்பித்திருந்தாலும், தமிழில் ஒரு புத்தகம் வாசிப்பது ஒரு தனியான சுகம். என்னதான் ஐந்து நட்சத்திர விடுதிகளில் அறுசுவையில் உண்டு பஞ்சு மெத்தையில் படுத்தாலும், வீட்டுக்கு வந்து அம்மா சமைத்த ரசம் சாதமும் உருளைக்கிழங்கு வறுவலும் சாப்பிட்டு தன் அறையில் தரையில் வெறும் பாய் போட்டுத்தூங்கும் அந்த சோம்பல் நிறைந்த சுகத்துக்கு எது ஈடு? அது போல ஒரு அமைதி கலந்த சொகுசு உணர்வு தமிழில் புத்தகம் படிக்கும் போது எப்போதுமே வருவதுண்டு. அதற்காக நான் ஏதோ பெரிய தமிழ் இலக்கிய ஆர்வலன் என்று நீங்கள் எண்ணிக்கொள்ள வேண்டாம்.

நான் முதலில் தமிழில் முழுமையாகப் படித்த புத்தகம் என்றால் அது கல்கியின் 'பொன்னியின் செல்வன்' தான். பத்தாம் வகுப்பு முடித்து கோடை விடுமுறையில் பொழுது போகாமல் புலம்பிக்கொண்டிருந்த சமயத்தில் என் அப்பா என் கைகளில் அந்த முதல் பாகத்தைக் கொடுத்து படிக்க சொன்னதன் விளைவு, அடுத்த ஓரிரு நாட்களில் அந்த முழுத் தொகுதியையும் படித்து முடித்திருந்தேன். கல்கியின் கற்பனை கலந்த வரலாற்றுப் புதினங்களுக்குப் பெரிய விசிறியும் ஆனேன். கல்கியைத் தவிர வேறு எழுத்தாளரும், பாரதி போல் வேறு ஒரு கவிஞரும் இருக்க வாய்ப்பே இல்லை என்று ஒரு குறுகிய வட்டத்துக்குள் அடங்கிப் போனேன். வழக்கம் போல் என் அப்பா தான் இப்போதும் என்னை வேறு திசைக்குள் திருப்பினார். சற்றே வாழ்க்கை புரிய ஆரம்பித்த தருணத்தில், அவர் சொன்னபடி ஜெயகாந்தன் கதைகளை படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். ஊமை ராணியையும், கண்ணம்மாவையும் தாண்டி, எதிரில் நிற்கும் நடக்கும் என் போன்ற சாதாரணர்கள், அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் ஏற்படும் இன்பதுன்பங்கள், இன்னல் இடையூறுகள், சின்னச்சின்ன வெற்றிகள், வெறுமைகள் இது எல்லாவற்றையும் பிடரியில் அறைந்தாற்போல் ஜெயகாந்தனின் எழுத்துக்கள் என்னுள் பதித்துச் சென்றன. சற்றுமுன் சொன்ன பரிச்சயமான அன்னியர்கள் அனைவரையும் நிறுத்தி 'உங்கள் கதை என்ன? உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை ஒழுங்காக செல்கிறதா? நீங்கள் நலமா?' என்றெல்லாம் கேட்டு அளவளாவ விரும்பும் அளவுக்கு, சக மனிதர்களின், சாதாரணமானவர்களின் நிலையை கண் கொண்டு நிறுத்தியது ஜெயகாந்தனின் எழுத்துக்கள் தான்.

பின் ஜானகிராமன், நா. பார்த்தசாரதி, சுஜாதா, பாக்கியம் ராமசாமி என்றெல்லாம் படிக்கத்தொடங்கிய போதும் சமகால தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர்களோடு பெரிய பரிச்சயம் ஏற்படவில்லை. கதைகளையும் கவிதைகளையும் தாண்டி நான் அறிவைத் தேடி படிக்க ஆரம்பித்திருந்தது ஒரு காரணமென்றால் எனக்கு தமிழ் இலக்கிய அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்த ஏன் அப்பா வயது மற்றும் வாழ்க்கை காரணமாக படிப்பதைக் குறைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததும் ஒரு காரணம். அவ்வப்போது சில தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர்களைப் பற்றி பேச்சுவாக்கில் கேட்டாலும் அதிக முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்ததில்லை. காரணம் அவை பெரும்பாலும் கற்பனை எழுத்துக்கள் பற்றியவை. அப்படி நான் ஒரு முறை கேள்விப்பட்ட பெயர் தான் 'ஜெயமோகன்'. அப்போது அவரின் 'விஷ்ணுபுரம்' நாவலை பற்றி எங்கும் ஒரு பேச்சு இருந்தது. அதுவும் அதில் இருந்த ஏதோ பிரச்சினைக்குரிய கருத்துக்கள் காரணம் என்று சொல்லப்பட்டதால் நான் அது பற்றி அதிக ஆர்வம் காட்டவில்லை. ஆனால் ஓரிரு வருடங்களுக்கு முன், ஒரு இலக்கியக் கூட்டத்தில் என்னை ஒரு நண்பர் பேச அழைத்திருந்தார். பேசிய மூன்று பேரில் நான் மட்டும் தி.ஜானகிராமன் பற்றிப் பேச, மீதி இருவரும் - இரண்டு பேருமே பெண்கள் - சமகால எழுத்தர்களைப் பற்றி பேசி முடித்தார்கள். அதில் ஒரு பெண் பேசியது ஜெயமோகனின் 'அறம்' புத்தகத்தில் வந்த 'சோற்றுக்கணக்கு' என்ற கதையைப்பற்றி. அந்தக் கதை பற்றி வேறு ஒரு சில நண்பர்களும் பின்னாட்களில் பேசக்கேட்ட பின் அந்த வருடம் வந்த என் தந்தையின் பிறந்த நாளுக்கு 'அறம்' புத்தகத்தையே பரிசாக அளித்தேன். நீண்ட காலமாய் அப்பாவின் அலமாரியில் இருந்த அந்த புத்தகம் சமீபத்தில் ஊருக்குச் சென்றபோது கண்களில் தென்பட, பொழுதுபோக்காய் ஓரிரு பக்கம் படிக்கத்தொடங்கி இன்று படித்தும் முடித்தாகிவிட்டது.

இது பன்னிரண்டு மனிதர்களின் கதை. உண்மை மனிதர்களின் கதை. சற்றுமுன் சொன்னேனில்லையா, ஒவ்வொரு பரிச்சயமான அந்நியர்களிடமும் போய் அவரது வாழ்க்கை நிலவரம் பற்றி கேட்டறியத் தூண்டும் எழுத்துக்கள் என்று, அது போன்ற கதைகள் இவை. புனைக்கதைகள் அல்ல, ஏதோ ஒரு தருணத்தில் இந்த எழுத்தாளரின் வாழ்வில் வந்து பினையப்பட்ட வேறு சில மனிதர்களின் கதை. 'அறம்' உண்மையிலேயே தர்மத்தை உயரக்கொண்டு போய் நிறுத்தும் கதையென்றால், 'வணங்கான்' சமூகத்தின் அதர்மங்களை எதிர்த்து நின்றவரின் கதை. பெண்ணுரிமை ஏதோ உடுப்பிலும் மது குடிப்பிலும் மட்டுமே என்றான இந்த காலகட்டத்தில், மிக மோசமான கொடுமைகளைக்கூட சகித்துக் கொண்டு தனக்குள்ளேயே புழுங்கிச் செத்த பல்லாயிரம் பெண்களின், பழைய தலைமுறை தெய்வங்களின் பாட்டை விவரிக்கும் 'தாயார்பாதம்'. ஜீவகாருண்யம் அனைத்து உயிர்களுக்கும் தான் என்று காட்டிச்சென்ற ஒரு அற்புதமான மனிதனின் கதை 'யானை டாக்டர்'. வலது கை கொடுப்பதை இடது கை அறியாது தான தர்மங்கள் செய்வது எப்படி என்பதை உணர்ச்சி பொங்க சொல்லித்தரும் 'சோற்றுக்கணக்கு'. சமூகநீதியும் இட ஒதுக்கீடும் ஒரு பிற்போக்கான செயலாகக் கருதப்படும் இந்த கால மக்களுக்கு அதன் பின்னால் இருக்கும் காரணங்களையும் அவலங்களையும் சுட்டிக்காட்டும் 'நூறு நாற்காலிகள்'. ஒரு சக மூத்த எழுத்தாளரின் இறுதிநாட்களையும் இயல்பையும் விவரிக்கும் 'பெருவலி'. மதமாற்றம் ஒரு பிரச்சினைக்குரிய நிகழ்வாக இன்று இருக்கையில், மதத்தின், மத விசுவாசத்தின் உண்மையான தாத்பரியத்தை கூறும் 'ஓலைச்சிலுவை'. கலையின் மேன்மையையும் ஆண்-பெண் உறவுகளின், அது குறித்த உணர்வுகளின் ஆழ அகலங்களை அளக்க எண்ணும் 'மயில் கழுத்து'. மனிதர்கள் உறவுகளைத் தாண்டி, சமூக வரைமுறைகளைத் தாண்டி ஒருவர் மீது ஒருவர் வைக்கக்கூடிய பாசம் மற்றும் பக்தியின் பலாபலன்களை சொல்லும் 'மத்துறு தயிர்'. பொது நலனுக்கு உண்மையாகப் பாடுபடுபவர்களை எல்லாம் பைத்தியம் போல நடத்தியும், சமூக நலனைக் குப்பையாக எண்ணி சுயநலம் பேணி வாழ்வோரை பெருமாண்பு கொடுத்தும் வாழ வைக்கும் இந்த முட்டாள் சமூகத்திற்கு ஒரு செய்தி போல 'கோட்டி'. 'யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்' என்ற பழந்தமிழ் சொல்லுக்கேற்ப வாழும், வாழ விரும்பும் பிற தேசத்து மனிதரின் கதையாய் 'உலகம் யாவையும்'. இந்தப் பன்னிரு கதைகளும் பன்னிரு பாடங்கள். புத்தகம் வெறுமே சொற்கள் நிறைந்த காகிதங்களின் தொகுப்பல்ல, அவை படிப்பவரின் உள்ளத்தில் ஆழ்ந்த தாக்கத்தை உண்டாக்கி, சமுதாய மாறுதல்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டும் ஆயுதங்கள் என்று உணர்ந்த ஒருவரால் மட்டுமே இப்படி ஒரு புத்தகத்தை எழுத முடியும்.

கற்பனைக்கதைகளையும், காதல் கவிதைகளையும் தாண்டி நான் கற்கத் தொடங்கும் போது, சுற்றி நடக்கும் அவலங்களையும் சமூகச் சிக்கல்களையும் எளிய நடையில், இயல்பான சொல்வழக்கில் எனக்கு கற்றுத்தந்த முதல் எழுத்தாளர் ஜெயகாந்தன். மனித மனங்கள் குறித்தும், அவற்றின் இருண்ட பக்கங்கள் குறித்தும் நான் முதலில் கற்றது அவர் கதைகளில் இருந்துதான். அழுகிய ஏதோ ஒன்றை நம் முகத்தில் வீசி, முதலில் குடலைப் புரட்ட வைத்து பின் அதிலிருந்து பரிசுத்தமாகும் வழியையும் சொல்வது போல், மனமாசுக்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசி, பின் அதிலிருந்து மீண்டு மனிதன் தன் மேன்மையை உணரவும் செய்வதுபோல் இருக்கும் ஜெயகாந்தன் எழுத்துக்கள். அந்த வகையில் என்னை மிகவும் பாதித்தவை 'ஒரு வீடு பூட்டிக் கிடக்கிறது' மற்றும் 'நான் இருக்கிறேன்' சிறுகதைகள். அது போல் மிக நீண்ட காலம் கழித்து என் இருப்பின் ஆழம் வரை சென்று என்னை உலுக்கியெடுத்த எழுத்துக்கள் இவை. குறிப்பாக 'தாயார்பாதம்' மற்றும் 'நூறு நாற்காலிகள்' என் ஆயுள் வரைக்கும் கூட வரப்போகும் அனுபவங்கள்.

புத்தகத்தை வாசித்து முடித்து புத்தக அலமாரியில் வைக்கும்போது தோன்றிய எண்ணம் - புத்தகம் வாசிக்கும் பழக்கம் இல்லாதவர்கள் காமத்தை விடவும் பரவசம் அளிக்கக்கூடிய, கடவுளை விடவும் ஆன்ம நிறைவு தரக்கூடிய ஒரு அனுபவத்தை இழந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

இனம், பால், நாகரிகம், சூழல், மொழி போன்ற கூடுகள் யாவற்றையும் ஒருசிறிய வெங்காயத்தின் தொலியைப்போல, ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாக உரித்தெடுத்தப்பின் எஞ்சிநிற்கும் ஒரு மனித உருவத்தை மனதிருத்திப் பாருங்கள்.எந்த விதமான ஒப்பனைகளுக்கும், வேஷங்களுக்கும் ஆளாகாத அறத்தின் வெளிப்பாட்டினை இப்பேர்ப்பட்ட ஒரு வெறுமையான மனிதத்துள் மட்டுமே காண இயலும். வெளிப்பூச்சும் நாடகமும் தன்னலமும் குரோதமும் பொய்யும் இல்லாத, தன் சொந்த அகத்தின் அறத்தை ஒரு மனிதனால் வெகுசுலபத்தில் கண்டுணரமுடிவதில்லை. அதற்கான சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் இறுக்கிப்பிடிக்கும் விரல்களுக்கிடையே தளர்ந்துசெல்லும் மணலைப்போல நழுவிச் சென்றுகொண்டேயிருக்கின்றன. என்றேனும் சிலநேரம் கோபத்தின் உச்சத்திலோ, காதலின் ஈரத்திலோ, தோல்வியின் திகைப்பிலோ நமது ஆழ்மனதின் அறம் நம் கண்முன் தோன்றி மறையும். அவ்வித அரிய சந்தர்ப்பங்கள் பலவற்றை இப்புத்தகத்தின் பக்கங்களிடையே நான் கண்டெடுத்தேன்.

இக்கதைகளில் நான்கண்ட மனிதர்களோடு ஒருவாரகாலம் முழுமையாய் வாழ்ந்தேன். இரவில் அங்கும்இங்குமாய் புரண்டு பின் விட்டத்தை வெகுநேரம் வெறித்தபடி, ஏதேதோ வேலைகளுக்கிடையே அரைநொடி அசைவற்று நின்றபடி, சிலபக்கங்களை வாசிக்கும்பொழுது சட்டென்று புத்தகத்தை மூடி எறிந்துவிட்டு மொட்டைமாடியேறி வெட்டவெளி வானத்தைப்பார்த்தபடியென, அம்மனிதர்கள் என்னைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தார்கள். இதோ, உற்றுப்பார், இதுதான் நீ என்று என்னை எனக்கே காட்டிவிட்டு, கண்கள் கட்டுண்ட காந்தாரியைப்போல் என்மனம் தட்டுத்தடுமாறி மெல்லத் தெளிவுறுவதை புன்முறுவலோடு அருகிலமர்ந்து கண்டவர்கள் அவர்கள். அம்மனிதர்களுக்கும், என்றோ தொலைந்த பழைய நட்பை எதேச்சையாய் சந்திக்கும் லாவகத்துடன் எனக்கவர்களை அறிமுகம் செய்துவைத்த திரு ஜெயமோகன் அவர்களின் எழுத்துக்கும், மொழிஆளுமைக்கும் பேரன்பும், நன்றிகள் பலவும்.

மிக உருக்கமான கதைகள்! பதிப்புரையில் கூறியது போல் இவ்வாசிப்பிற்குப் பிறகு குறைந்த பட்ச நேர்மையுடனாவது வாழ வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் வேரூன்றுகிறது.
இதுவே எனது முதல் ஜெயமோகன். 12 கதைகளில் பல்வேறு ஊர்களின் (நாகார்க்கோயிலும் சுற்றி உள்ள ஊர்களும்) பாஷையை முழுதும் பேச்சு வழக்கிலேயே ஆசிரியர் எழுதியுள்ளார். மேலும், சில கதைகளில் கொச்சை சொற்கள் உள்ளன. தூய தமிழ் புத்தகங்களையே வாசித்தப் பழகிய எனக்கு "அறம்" மிகக் கடினமாகவே இருந்தது. எனினும், மனதில் பெரும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தக் கூடிய வலிமை கொண்டவை இக்கதைகள். அறம் எனும் ஓர் சொல்லிற்கு சூழல் கொண்டு எத்தனை அர்த்தங்கள் இருக்கின்றன!
ஓரிரு கதைகள் மட்டும் எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை. அறம் கொண்டு ஆசிரியர் என்ன சொல்ல வருகிறார் என்று புரியவில்லை. மற்ற கதைகள் யாவும் ஓர் புதுமையான கண்ணோட்டத்தையும், தனிக்கருத்தை எடுத்துரைக்கின்றன.
சாதிவெறி அவ்வளவு வேரூன்றி இருந்த காலத்தில் கீழ்சாதி மக்களுக்கு படிப்போ, வேலையோ கிட்ட வாய்ப்பே இல்லை. ஆங்கிலேயராலேயே அவர்களுக்கு வாய்ப்புகள் கிட்டின என்பதை அறிந்தேன். ஆங்கிலேயர் வராவிடின் நம் நாடு இன்றைய முன்னேற்றத்தைக் கூடக் கொண்டிருக்காது என்பது எனது பதிப்பு,

அப்பாவின் வருமானத்தில் ஆறுவேளைகள் உண்டு கொளுத்திருந்தபோது "உயிரின் மானம் பெரிதென" படித்து தெரிந்துகொண்டது. வேலைதேடி தலைநகர தெருக்களில் அலைந்தபோது "மானத்தின் வயிறு பெரியது"யென பட்டு உணர்ந்தது. "சோற்றுக்கணக்கின்" பல பக்கங்கள் என் நாட்குறிப்பின் பிரதியாகவே உணரவைத்தது. வாழ்க்கையை வாழ்ந்து காட்டுவதைவிட வேறு எவ்வழியிலும் விளக்கயிலாது.

வாழ்ந்துகாட்டுவதும், வாழவைப்பதுவுமே நம்முடைய பதிலாகவும், பதிலடியாகவும் இருக்கட்டும்...

அறம் - ஜெயமோகன்

ஒருசில எழுத்தாளர்கள் பேசுகிற கருத்துகளோ, அரசியலோ, இல்ல அவங்க யார் பக்கம் நின்று பேசுறாங்கனோ, இல்ல சுயத்தை பற்றியான நெடி கொஞ்சம் கூடுதலாக இருக்கும்னோ இப்படி ஏதேதோ முன் அனுமானங்களோடு நான் தவிர்த்து விடுகிற ஒரு சில எழுத்தாளர்களோ இல்ல புத்தகங்களோ உண்டு. அப்படி நான் தவிர்த்து விட்டதில் அறமும் ஒன்று, ஆனால் அறம் அப்படி நான் வச்சிருந்த எல்லா முன் அனுமானங்களையும் உடைச்சு சுக்குநூறு ஆக்கிடுச்சு.

படிச்சு முடிச்சதும், ஏன் படைப்பும்,எழுத்தாளனும் எப்போதும் ஒரே தளத்தில் மட்டும் தான் இயங்கணுமா என்ன, ஏன் ஒரு படைப்பு எழுத்தாளனோட சுயத்தை எல்லாம் தாண்டி தன்னியல்பா தன்னைத் தானே உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டு எழுத்தாளனையும் எழுதத் துண்டாதா, வெறும் முன் அனுமானங்களால் மட்டுமே ஒரு படைப்பை நிராகரிப்பது சரியா, இல்லை வாசித்து விட்டு எதிர்வினை ஆற்றுவது சரியா இப்படின்னு எனக்குள்ள ஏதோ விவாதங்களை உருவாக்கி வச்சிருச்சு அறம்.

��றம் ஒரே ஒரு உணர்வை மட்டும் குறிக்கும் ஒற்றைச் சொல்லா, இல்லை அறம், சீற்றத்தின் வெளிப்பாடா, அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிரான வெளிப்பாடா, பேரன்பின் வெளிப்பாடா, பெருங்கருணையின் வெளிப்பாடா, கொண்ட கொள்கையின் வெளிப்பாடா, பரவசத்தின் வெளிப்பாடா, இல்லை நியதியின் வெளிப்பாடா, உண்மையில் எது அறம், அறத்தின் மதிப்பீடுகள் என்ன???

ஏழை எழுத்தாளனுக்கு இழைக்கப்பட்ட அநீதிக்காக சம்கார ரூபம் எடுத்து அறத்தை நிலைநாட்டும் செட்டி ஆட்சி, வருகிற எல்லோருக்கும் எந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இல்லாமல் சாப்பாடு பரிமாறும் கெத்தேல் சாகிப்பின் தாயின் கருணையை ஒத்த கைகள், அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிரான குரலாக ஒலிக்கும் மார்சல் நேசமணி, சாதியத்திற்கு எதிராக நூறுநாற்காலியின் தேவையை உணர்த்தும் நூறுநாற்காலிகள், உலகம் யாவையும் ஒரு சுவருக்குள் அடைத்துவிடும் காரி டேவிஸ், புழுக்களை கூட பூச்சிகளின் குழந்தைகளாக பார்க்கும்,விலங்குகளிடம் கூட பேரன்பு கட்டும் டாக்டர் கே, கடைசி வரை கொண்ட கொள்கையை கைவிடாத பூமேடை இப்படியாக இன்னும் சிலர்.

ஒவ்வொரு கதையிலும் அறமும், மனிதமும் ஒன்றை ஒன்று முந்திக்கொண்டு போறத பார்க்கும்போது உண்மையில் அறம் இருக்கிற மனிதர்களிடம் தான் மனிதமும் இருக்கிறதா இல்லை, அறத்தின் வெளிப்பாடு தான் மனிதமுமா என்கிற கேள்வி தொடர்ந்து எனக்குள்ள எழுவதை தவிர்க்கவே முடியல. ஆனா ஒவ்வொரு கதையின் இறுதியில் அறமும், மனிதமும் ஒன்றோடு ஒன்று கைகோர்த்து நின்று உண்டாக்குகிற சீற்றமோ, மன எழுச்சியோ, கருணையோ, பேரன்போ, நெகிழ்ச்சியோ, பரவசமோ, உச்சமோ, தரிசனங்களோ வெறும் வார்த்தைகளால் மட்டுமே விளக்கி விட முடியாத ஒவ்வொருவரும் வாசித்து அனுபவித்து மட்டுமே புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய உணர்வுகள்.

பெரும்பாலான கதைகள் என்னை அழ வச்சாலும், ஒவ்வொன்றும் எனக்குள் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் வெவ்வேறானவை. ஒருசில கதைகள் தொடர்ச்சியா வாசிக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கான தாக்கத்தையும், ஏன் இந்த மனிதர்களை போல ஏன் நான் இல்லைங்கிற கேள்வியையும் கேட்டுக்கிட்டே இருக்கு கதை நெடுகவும். அறத்தின் தாக்கத்தின் இருந்து என்னால் அவ்வளவு எளிதாக மீண்டு வெளி வரவே முடியல.

எனக்குள் இருந்த அகந்தை எல்லாத்தையும் புடுங்கி கீழ போட்டு மிதிச்சுட்டு, நானெல்லாம் ஒரு ஆளே இல்ல ஒரு பொருட்டே இல்லன்னு புரிய வச்சுட்டு போகிறார்கள் அறத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு மனிதர்களும்.

ஒருவேளை இலக்கியமோ, வாசிப்போ அப்படி என்ன ஒரு மனுஷனுக்கு கொடுத்துவிட முடியும் என்கிற கேள்விக்கு - அறத்தை ஒருமுறை வாசித்து பாருங்கள்.

Jeyamohan takes incidents from the lives of people known to him and weaves a magical yarn of stories that resonates long after one finishes reading the book. Compassion and humanity are intertwined together as a common thread through all the 12 stories. Even a story as depressing as "Nooru Naarkalikal" ends with an emphatic declaration of hope. My top two favorites are " Yaanai Doctor" wherein Dr.K exposes how the benchmarks of the materialistic world do not matter inside a forest teeming with life and "Thaayar paadham", a minimalistic short story with lots left unsaid but leaves us with a lump in the throat nonetheless.

அறம் மனிதர்களின் பதிவு என்று சொல்லலாம். நாம் பாராட்டவேண்டிய சில மனிதர்கள், நாம் பின்பற்றவேண்டிய சில மனிதர்கள், என நம் மறந்தும் பார்க்காத சில மனிதர்களைப் பற்றிய நாவல். நாவலில் பல இடங்களில் சிந்திக்க முடிகிறது, சில இடங்களில் படிக்க மட்டுமே முடிகிறது. எனக்குத் தோன்றிய காரணம் அந்நாவலின் மொழி நடையும் ஒரு காரணம். பல இடங்களில் இயல்பாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காகப் பிற மொழியைப் பேசும்போது படிக்கத் தடுமாறுகிறது. அதுபோலச் சில கதைகள் ஒரே போல் இருப்பதுபோல மாயை தோன்றினாலும், பல கதைகள் நம்மை வெகுவாகப் பாதிக்கின்றன. ஜெயமோகனின் இந்த அறம் சிறந்த படைப்பு.

These stories are translated from Tamil, written originally by Jeyamohan as series in his website they were an instant hit amongst the Tamil serious literature audience. It chronicled inspiring stories based on real life individuals. Now this is available in English, it is a great achievement by the translator Priyamvada Ram.

One of the best short stories I've read. Thanks to the author. Initially I had no idea what difference these stories are gonna make. After each story it ripped my heart out. I never heard of these great humans before and I felt ashamed of it. On the other hand it was proud knowing em. Loved Dr. K, and Somervell. Their magnanimous and idealism really moved me. A complete book !!
