A grand epic battle to save/destroy the earth.
Featuring a very pragmatist lolicon hero, a princess who love the earth so much she wants to destroy it to make the earth hers, a rational talking lizard, and many more casts of quirky characters and talking animals.

Quite an amazing volume. There are plenty of chapters in this, as it covers 1-8, and I feel like it introduced plenty of aspects as a good introduction to the rest of the series.
Really impressed. Can wait to read more

The Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (labelled on good reads as "Samidare") is a very strange story. It begins when a young, Japanese college student named Amamiya Yuuhi wakes up to discover a lizard is on his bed. This strange sight escalates to complete weirdness when the lizard begins to talk to him. The lizard reveals that he is a knight who has come to recruit Yuuhi to protect a princess and save the world from destruction.

Yuuhi chooses to throw the Lizard out the window. This all takes place within the first five pages.

From there, the book is a mix between farcical comedy and a rather dark adventure. Yuuhi is an antisocial, perverted jerk. He sees the destruction of the world as something he couldn't handle, and would prefer to let the other warriors deal with the trouble. He changes his mind upon meeting the princess herself, reincarnated in his neighbor Samidare. Samidare initially appears to be much more confident and capable, ready to save the world on her own. This quickly proves to be a terrible idea, as she reveals her own goal: to destroy the world herself. Eager to please the girl, Yuuhi agrees to aid her plans.

The characters introduced are absurd and silly, but still react in ways that make sense for their characters. Yuuhi's nature is quickly revealed to be a result of severe emotional abuse from his grandfather. He chooses to attack himself to Samidare as an escape from his own problems. Samidare herself is very aware of her mortality. Rather than let herself die one day, she prefers to destroy everything with her, making it "her's" forever.

I don't get the logic either.

Throughout the book, we get a glimpse of what to expect in the future. A mysterious "Mage" sends giant monsters for the heroes to fight, which is somehow related to Earth's impending destruction. A dog and another knight appear, suggesting more characters in the future. All while the sheer extent of the first two characters' issues are slowly demonstrated to readers.

All in all, I enjoyed it. They are a few problems here and there, mainly in how the book deals with abuse. Furthermore, the romance between Yuuhi and Samidare only makes sense when Yuuhi's mental state is taken into account. This makes Samidare's interest in him seem a little too forced for my liking. The book was also a little too short, but that's a minor argument. The image of a lizard being tossed out a window is too perfect for me too focus on the book's problems.

A series any manga fan needs to read. It is only 65 chapters, but in these 65 chapters it turns many of the shounen battle manga tropes on their head.

Hovering above the earth is something called The Biscuit Hammer, created by a mysterious mage, that is going to fall and crush the Earth. The only people capable of stopping it are those granted a special ability by making a contract with an animal knight. Upon making the contract the individual is also granted the ability to make one wish.

This may all sound rather generic at first glance, but as we meet our main protagonists, Yuuhi, chosen by the Lizard Knight Noi (basically a talking iguana), and The Princess, Samidare, things get a little more interesting.

The Princess, leader of those who are attempting to stop the world from being destroyed by The Biscuit Hammer has her own agenda: she wants to destroy the world herself.

It also becomes quickly apparent that Yuuhi is not the genius, badass, gets-stronger-after-ever-battle, pulls-an-overwhelming-power-out-when-he's-about-to-be-defeated kind of manga hero. In fact he's really weak and is easily defeated in a duel with the first other animal knight he meets. It is not until the manga reaches its climax that we see him in a league of his own, but even then he is not some god-level figure, nor even the strongest of his peers. It is this slow development along with a few other qualities that make him relatable and

Furthermore, with a main cast of around 13, mangaka Satoshi Mizukami miraculously manages to make every single one of them interesting and unique so that, by the end of it, you're sad to see them go.

I believe a few of the story elements could have been fleshed out a bit more and, although I'm glad it did not go on too long I actually found myself wanting there to be a bit more, as it felt as if it was moving too fast at the end. The art style is also take-it-or-leave it a lot of the times with some frankly uninspired character design.

However, the humor, self-awareness, references to other manga tropes, and memorable characters make this, I feel, a must-read.

Things I like:
-The art
-Yuuhi's gloomy personality
-A talking lizard
-Fun, but not overly powerful "abilities"
-The older characters

Things I don't like:
-Yuuhi's depressingly cynical outlook on the world
-The whole "the world gets destroyed no matter what" thing
-Samidare looks like she's 12

The story is interesting so far, but I can only handle a couple chapters at a time or I start to feel a little cynical and depressed.

English translation of the title: The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer
What the heck? I don't think that I have ever read a manga with a premise that seems so random-- Oh, wait: Midori Days, Volume 1
