The greatest enemy to scientific progress is not a narrow mindset or orthodoxy in thought. It is human stupidity. We are no longer reliant on individuals doing scientific research on their own and turning up with earth shattering discoveries. This role has now been taken over by governmental agencies who provide the fiscal backing for these men and women. The bureaucracy has forever been renowned the world over for one thing - inefficiency. Can you contemplate what would the outcome be like for a creatively brilliant mind to be trapped in the quagmire of bureaucratic red tape ? It would inevitably lead to a slow but sure degeneration. Set against the backdrop of an astronomical observatory nestled somewhere in the wooded, isolated slopes of Tamil Nadu is this poignant and powerful story of loneliness, mental decay and the human condition.

Unemployment in India is a reality to which no one can turn their face away from. Mental breakdowns, suicides and civil unrest have all reared their heads at one time or the other in this fertile ground of unemployment. It was much worse in the 70's and 80's when the opportunities were limited and foreign investment was next to nil. The books tells us about Appu from a village in northern Kerala who joins up for work at the observatory with eyes full of bright aspirations. The story then is of how he is disrobed of such ideals and the harsh unrelenting way of the world shattering his dreams. Working with a whole bunch of dimwitted, politicking and sometimes downright insane group of people resounds like a punch to his solar plexus and brings him to consciousness gasping for breath. The book is also a profound meditation on the nature of loneliness. The bitterly cold landscape makes people drowsy and more inwardly drawn which leads to a great deal of soliloquy. In the hands of an adept writer like Radhakrishnan, these thoughts become in depth reflections on beliefs, ideas and fears. The will of some men and women are not strong enough to withstand this nature of isolation and the overflow of thoughts. Some take their lives by their own hands while others jump off the cliff face of normalcy to the abyss of insanity. Such a fragile thing is our life on earth ! I was amazed by the flow of language at the hands of the author for Radhakrishnan packs some serious firepower in terms of his usage and vocabulary.

The title translates to The Leopards and The Stars. These two entities are as different as chalk and cheese to a regular observer but there does rise some kind of abstract correlation between the spots of the animal and the spots of light that we see far above us. This could well be one of the first novels in Malayalam that dealt with the nature of physics and mathematics but more than all that I think this is about the leopards we all keep chained inside us. All for the sake of societal norms and morals!

സി. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്റെ നോവൽ നവകം പരമ്പരയിലെ മൂന്നാം നോവൽ. എല്ലാം മായ്ക്കുന്ന കടലി ലൂടെയും പുഴ മുതൽ പുഴ വരെ യിലൂടെയും അപ്പുവുമൊത്തുള്ള നമ്മുടെ യാത്ര ഇവിടെയും തുടരുന്നു. സമതലത്തിനുമുകളിൽ ഒരു വയനാടൻകുന്നിൽ പകലായാലും രാത്രിയായാലും നരഭോജികളായ പുള്ളിപ്പുലികൾ പതിയിരിക്കുന്ന കൊടുംകാടിനും പടുകൂറ്റൻമരങ്ങളെ പിടിച്ചുലയ്ക്കുന്ന കൊടുങ്കാറ്റിനും നടുവിൽ തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞ പ്രകൃതിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന നക്ഷത്രനിരീക്ഷണാലയത്തിൽ ജോലിക്ക് ചേരാൻ അപ്പു എത്തുന്നതോടെയാണ് കഥ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. താമസിക്കാൻ തരപ്പെടുത്തിയ മുറിയിൽ ഒപ്പമുള്ള, നിരീക്ഷണാലയത്തിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന മേനോനുമായുള്ള സംസാരങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ അപ്പു തന്റെ വീട്ടിലെ കാര്യങ്ങളും ഓർക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. മുന്നേയുള്ള നോവലുകളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, അമ്മ സീതയോട് വളരെയധികം സ്നേഹത്തിൽ പെരുമാറുന്ന അച്ഛൻ ദാമോദരൻ നായരെയും അച്ഛമ്മയെയുമാണ് നമുക്കിവിടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നത്. മേനോനിൽ നിന്നും ജോലിയെപ്പറ്റിയും ജോലി ചെയ്യാനെത്തിയ സ്ഥാപനത്തെപ്പറ്റിയും അത്ര നല്ല കാര്യങ്ങളല്ല അപ്പു കേൾക്കുന്നത്. കൂടെ ജോലിക്ക് ചേരാനുള്ളവർ ഇനിയും വന്നിട്ടില്ലായിരുന്നു. മേനോനടക്കം വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തവും മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത സ്വഭാവവിശേഷങ്ങളുമുള്ള ഒരുകൂട്ടം മനുഷ്യർക്കും, ആളെത്തീനികളായ പുലികൾക്കും ഇടയിലാണ് ഇനിയുള്ള തന്റെ ജീവിതമെന്ന് അപ്പു മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. അധികം താമസിയാതെ കൂടെ ജോലിക്ക് ചേർന്നവരായ കേശവൻ, മമ്മൂട്ടി, ഇഗ്‌നേഷ്യസ്, മായ സരസ്വതി എന്നിവർ വരികയും, അതിൽ പുരുഷന്മാർ ചേർന്നൊരു പഴയ ബംഗ്ളാവ് വാടകയ്‌ക്കെടുത്തു താമസം തുടങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അരിവെപ്പിനായി ബാലൻ എന്നൊരു കഥാപാത്രവും വരുന്നു.

പഠിച്ചതിൽ നിന്നും വ്യസ്ത്യസ്തമായ ജോലിയും തലക്കുമുകളിൽ തനിക്രൂരനായ വകുപ്പുമേധാവി ഭൃഗുവും അപ്പുവിന്റെ ക്ഷമയെ ഒട്ടേറെ പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അപ്പു മാത്രമല്ല, ആ സ്ഥാപനത്തിലെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരും, പലവിഭാഗങ്ങളിലുള്ള മേൽകീഴ്ജീവനക്കാരും ഭൃഗുവിന്റെ അടിച്ചമർത്തലുകൾക്ക് വിധേയരാണ്. ഇതിനിടയിലും അപ്പു തന്റെ ശാസ്ത്രപഠനങ്ങളുമായി മുന്നോട്ടുപോകുന്നുണ്ട്. എങ്കിലും ഭൃഗുവിന്റെ ഇടപെടലുകൾ ഇത്തരം വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ തടസ്സങ്ങളായി മാറുന്നു. അപ്പു ഭൃഗുവിന്റെ കണ്ണിലെ കരടാവുകയും, ആജന്മശത്രുവായിത്തീരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അപ്പുവിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതത്തിൽ കടിച്ചുകീറാനൊരുങ്ങിനിൽക്കുന്ന പുള്ളിപ്പുലി ഭൃഗുവാണെങ്കിൽ, അതുപോലെ പലരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലും ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ഓരോ പുള്ളിപ്പുലികൾ വേട്ടയാടുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ നോവലിൽ പുള്ളിപ്പുലി ഒരു പ്രതീകമാണ്. അതുപോലെതന്നെ വെള്ളിനക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ ഓരോരുത്തരുടെയും ഉള്ളിലെ സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങൾ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രതീക്ഷകളാവാം. അപ്പുവിനെ പോലെത്തന്നെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരുപാട് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുണ്ട് ഈ കഥയിൽ. മായ, കേശവൻ, മമ്മൂട്ടി, ഇഗ്‌നേഷ്യസ്, സരസ്വതി, സിസിൽ, സൈഗാൾ, ബാലൻ, ഭൃഗു, വെങ്കിടി, കാശി, സുന്ദരേശൻ, രാഘവൻ, മരതകം, മൂർത്തി, ശങ്കരൻ, പുനീത്, ഖാണ്ഡേക്കർ, സാം, സുപ്പുലു, പാണ്ഡ്യൻ, ചിന്നൻ, മണി, വിശ്വംഭരൻ എന്നിവർ അവരിൽ ചിലർ മാത്രം. മായയും സിസിലും സരസ്വതിയുമെല്ലാം നീറ്റലായി ഉള്ളിൽ തങ്ങിനിൽക്കും.

ഒരു നക്ഷത്രനിരീക്ഷണാലയത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ ശാസ്ത്രവും ആ മേഖലയിലെ അളവില്ലാ ക്രൂരതയും ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരുടെയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ളവരുടെയും മാനസികനിലയെ എന്തുമാത്രം വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും മനസികരോഗത്തിന്റെയും മരണത്തിന്റെയും നിലയില്ലാക്കയത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് തള്ളിവിടുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും ഈ നോവൽ ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നു. കഥയിലേക്ക് മരണം പലരൂപത്തിൽ പലതവണ എത്തിനോക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കഥയുടെ പൊതുഭാവം തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞ കാടുപോലെ ദുഃഖമാണ്. കഥയിൽ ചെറുതായി ആദ്യകാല നക്സൽ വിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ തീപ്പൊരികൾ വീണിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ കഥയിൽ വരുന്ന വിശ്വംഭരൻ അത്തരത്തിൽ തീ പടർത്താൻ വരുന്നൊരു കഥാപാത്രമാണ്. ആദ്യവിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ ചെറിയൊരു വിത്തെറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞത് രാഘവനും. വിപ്ലവം അപ്പുവിന്റെയുള്ളിൽ ദ്വന്ദയുദ്ധം ആരംഭിച്ചെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. പുള്ളിപ്പുലികളും വെള്ളിനക്ഷത്രങ്ങളും നല്ലൊരു വായനാനുഭവം തന്നു. തുടർനോവലുകളിൽ എന്താണെന്നറിയാനുള്ള കൗതുകമാണിപ്പോൾ.

The author worked as scientific assistant at the Kodaikanal observatory from 1960-1962. His experiences during these couple of years, along with the fictional rights of a writer, have given birth to this amazing novel. The title of the book translates to ‘Leopards and Stars’. Leopards are a scary fact in the jungle beside the observatory and many have been mauled by them, whereas stars are the resilient, almost venerated points of stability for the academic.

The story is third person narrated, and features nepotistic administration and academics-in-shambles to start with, but then takes us far and deep into quaint philosophy. When coupled with the scientific outlook and ruminations from the author, these philosophical wanderings become quite affable.

The story also portrays familial bonds and relations between colleagues, settling down to a fraternal bond between Appu (the author) and Maya (a colleague). The dispassionate way in which Maya discusses deeply personal experiences becomes the crux of the story later on. The author doesn’t sugarcoat any discrepancies while depicting people and their interactions; in fact, he successfully salvages the small things, the distasteful truth, and integrates them into his descriptions like regular things.

The candor with which the author flourishes sensitive metaphors is inspirational, so much so that, aside from the conversations and some instructive paragraphs, the story could be thought of as a collection of verses. Satire, outright accusation and emotionless observation trade places in these verses, and we are left with a diverse bundle, which although thoroughly analyzed, is still too deep to fathom altogether.

A wonderful read, in which we can spend time ruminating each paragraph.

സി ���ാധാകൃഷ്ണൻറെ നോവൽ നവകത്തിൽ മൂന്നാമത്തെ പുസ്തകം. വളരെയധികം പ്രശസ്തമായ മലയാളം പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം.

പണ്ട് പഠനകാലത്ത് ലൈബ്രറിയിൽ നിന്നും ഇത് വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും പുനർവായന നടത്തിയത് ഇപ്പോഴാണ്.

എത്ര മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ജോലി സ്ഥലം ആണെങ്കിലും ഒരു മോശം മേലുദ്ധ്യോഗസ്ഥനത് നരകമാക്കാൻ കഴിയുമെന്നതിൻ്റെ ഉത്തമോദാഹാരണമാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. ഒരു വിനോദസഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ ഒരു നക്ഷത്ര നീരീക്ഷണശാല.
നോവലിസ്റ്റിൻ്റെ സയൻ്റിഫിക് അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് ആയുള്ള കൊഡൈക്കനാൽ അസ്ട്രോഫിസിക്കൽ ഓബ്സെർവേറ്ററിയിലെ ജോലിക്കാലമാണെന്ന് നമുക്ക് കരുതാം.

തണുപ്പ് പുതച്ച കാടിനുള്ളിൽ ഉള്ള ഒബ്സെർവ്വറ്ററിയിൽ ജോലി നേടി അപ്പു എത്തുന്നു. ഡയറക്ടറെ പുറത്താക്കാൻ തന്ത്രങ്ങൾ മെനയുന്ന ഡോ ഭൃഗു ഈ നീരീക്ഷണശാല ശാലയിൽ ഭരണം കൈയ്യാളുന്നു. പുതിയ ജോലിക്കാരുടെ ഗവേഷണം തട്ടിയെടുത്ത് പേര് വാങ്ങുന്ന എർപ്പാടുമുണ്ട്.
പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയാൽ തണുത്തുറയുന്ന കാലാവസ്ഥയും ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന പുലിശല്യവും ഓഫീസിൽ office politics ൻ്റെ
