Light the Shadows

You only get one chance at life, then you die. The game’s over, no second chances. But she was never one to follow all the rules.

In a strange twist of fate, a woman flees purgatory only to jump into a newly vacated body. When she wakes in the hospital, she has a brand new life and a whole lot of unanswered questions. Now she’s Micah Munroe, a real estate
agent with broken memories of the messed up life she once lived. A mysterious man who claims to be Death says she’s his granddaughter and that she’s something called a grimm.

Sully knows she’s an imposter because he reaped the soul of the real Micah only a week ago. He suspects she might be a misplaced shadow, what he calls spirits and vengeful ghosts. He becomes obsessed with finding out who she really is and just how she inhabited a new body. He’ll stop at nothing to find the truth and send her back to purgatory where she belongs. What he didn’t bargain on was how his body would react to her or how powerful the white light within her is.

When a powerful shadow and her horde of angry spirits kidnaps Sully’s best friend, they must work together to get him back. Fighting their feelings for each other isn’t half as difficult as fighting the army of shadows bent on starting a war with the living.

The blurb sums up this book perfectly, so I'll just dive into the review. I loved this book. It had a spunky heroine, a scythe-wielding, biker hunk, a teenage ghost and one evil little girl, who could give Samara Morgan from The Ring a run for her money. Micah was a kick-butt heroine, who had every intention of putting her second chance at life to good use, starting with her new body and a makeover. Her teenage guide or Shepherd from the other side, Anna, was like a best friend, little sister and mother hen all in one. In short, she made an excellent "sidekick".

Good pacing from start to finish, good world-building, and Micah made quite the transition from confused and slightly scared to a kick butt, Buffy-type character. I thought her progression from living to dying to rebirth was handled very well, and she adapted to her new reality at a believable pace. Sully's arc wasn't nearly as complicated. Our tortured hero's vulnerable side was a case of needing to let go of the past and embrace the present for a chance at happiness. It's not often I come across a hero who is hell bent on guarding his heart. I thought they had great chemistry together, even moreso as the story developed and it became clear they would do anything to save each other. Their attraction wasn't the typical "meant to be" types like vampire or shifter mates. They watched each other, learned from each other, and their like grew into love because of their character traits.

There was enough action and excitement to offset the sexy times, of which there weren't that many, and they weren't thrown in for the sake of getting down and dirty. I thought they were steamy and well placed. One thing didn't make sense to me. I don't consider it a spoiler, but to play it safe, here's your warning.

While the ending doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it does have an open ending. I had to ask the author if there was a sequel planned, and she said yes! Thank the Light! I definitely recommend this.

We first meet our heroine when she dies. She follows a doorway into what appears to be a waiting room that no one expected her to be in. Though she can’t remember her name she does know that she doesn’t want to be dead. So, in an act of rebellion she runs back through the door and jumps into a now empty body. She is now Micah Munroe. She sees what Micah’s life was like and decides that if this was going to be her new home then she had to revamp everything about her life. While Micah is trying to become what she once was she inadvertently runs into Sully. Sully recognizes Micah because it was only a while ago that he reaper her soul. She should not be standing in front of him breathing. It soon becomes Sully’s mission to find out who or what Micah is and what her plans are. The only problem is spending more time with her is making him feel things he shouldn’t be. While Micah and Sully draw closer she soon discovers that she isn’t just an ordinary soul starting over, she is a grimm. She is charged with fighting, removing or guiding shadows through the light so that they may go to their hereafter. Micah’s life isn’t just new it’s completely different and with a sexy man at her side how can she not try to live life to its fullest. But, with death there is never an easy road. With the shadows wanting her and her feelings for Sully growing how can things work out for the best without her dying or worse becoming a shadow herself?

This was a great story. I was really drawn in by the characters and the action packed story. Micah and Sully are as steamy a couple as they come. You can really feel their feelings toward each other and go along with them while they grow. I thought the premise of the story was great. It is definitely a different interpretation of the idea of a reaper, souls and many other death related mythologies. Michelle Clay does a wonderful job with this story and I fell in love not only with the characters or the story but with her writing as well. If you are a paranormal romance fan, like me, you will want to pick this up if not for the story than for the steamy scenes with Micah and Sully

Light the Shadows is the story of a second chance at life - for many people. Our main lady (we'll call her Micah since we don't know her original name) freaks out when she finds out she's dead and runs away into a new body. This isn't supposed to happen, and when Sully accidentally runs into her one day, he knows something is up. But Micah isn't the same, not with another person in her body - and she latches onto her new life with gusto, has a makeover, and decides to make a go of her second chance. Anna, the guide she met in her brief time on the other side, keeps popping up and trying to offer advice and help out in her own little way (she was a wonderful character!).

Micah's relationship with Sully gets off the a rough start, especially since he thinks she a poltergeist or vengeful spirit. It doesn't take all that long for the sparks to fly between them, but they have a lot to overcome first, including an impossibly strong shadow bent on destroying the world of the living - starting with Micah and Sully.

There were very few slow spots in this book, but it was never very overwhelming. I loved that it seemed to move along on its own without me needing to push through parts of it. The ghost story helping to drive things along was a great mystery, with a few surprises along the way as well.

This story is instantly compelling. The heroine Micah is a gutsy girl who died but, instead of going to her hereafter, jumped into another body. She is able to live again, but it's someone else's body and life. The hero, Sully, is a sexy Reaper who is on to her deception. It was fun to see the author bring these characters to life. What a great twist!

I loved the story line/premise, and the writing was good but for me something seem to be lacking in this book. First he didn't really seem to do his job much, second Micah seem to just roll with everything happening in her life & was really forgiving about Ben, also how did Sully not notice something going on with his best friend? One of the reason's I bought the book was because reviews said it wasn't a cliffhanger, HELLO people, when the story doesn't neatly answer almost all your questions then it's a cliffhanger so they can get you to buy book 2!
