Deadman longs for the things he enjoyed when he was alive and when he comes across an article in a tabloid about a haunted old circus and the ghost of a young acrobat who mysteriously died there, he decides to investigate.
This is terrible. I can see how I was into the art as an adolescent (especially since there are some naughty bits), but it doesn't hold up. I still like the style and colors, but it's apparent that Jones uses photo reference (especially for faces), and every character looks like a different (wooden) person panel to panel. The photo reference may or may not have been pornographic--the women have inexplicable expressions on their faces a lot of the time. The dialog is perhaps even more wooden than the drawings.
The big baddy at the end of the story was straight up a photo of the Rancor from Return of the Jedi with tentacles added to its head.
One of the things that really stood out to me in my re-read of Sandman was the issues with Kelley Jones' illustrations, so I sought out some more of his stuff. I figured I'd try Deadman because that's the freakiest (and non-Batman-iest) I came across in a quick search.
Trey happened to have copies of all these, and my local library and ComiXology did not, so I'm borrowing his copies. He said he re-read them before sending but was going to hold off on his review until I had a chance to read them, and now I think I understand why.
Kelly Jones has done wonderful work here as always, which is the only reason these are even getting 2 stars. Mike Baron's story is just garbage. Angry masculine misogynist garbage that also has the benefit of making no sense whatsoever. I really really wanted to like this story about a haunted house and circus full of (un)dead sideshow freaks, but I couldn't. The story felt forced then dragged, never getting a stable rhythm. The bad guy appears and disappears for no reason I can understand in the slightest. The bad guy's boss apparently "despises heat and motion" but looks like a fiery demon and lives in the engine of a coal-fired locomotive? Deadman's love interest is referred to as a bitch and the "town pump" and apparently the bad guy convinces Deadman that she's worthless because she's using him (Deadman) to escape this hellish non-afterlife to which she's subjected. I don't know. It was too muddy to make any sense. All I know is Mike Baron apparently wants sexytimes in his comic but then slut-shames the shit out of the women involved. Just really gross.
To summarize: angry gross woman-hating arrhythmic story barely saved by competent artist.
