খুনোখুনি নেই, কিন্তু রহস্য আছে। গন্তব্য নেই, কিন্তু ভ্রমণ রয়েছে। ভূত নৈই, কিন্তু রোমাঞ্চ আছে। উপদেশ নেই, কিন্তু প্রেরণা রয়েছে। প্রত্যাশিত বহু কিছুই নেই, আবার অপ্রত্যাশিতের অমূল্য নানান চমকে ভরা অসামান্য এক উপন্যাস—‘শিউলি’। সত্যিই কোনও খুন-জখম, দুষ্কৃতি-অপরাধ ঘটেনি এই কাহিনীতে। তবু জীবন আর পৃথিবীর, প্রকৃতি আর বিশ্বের অনেক রহস্যের কথা এই উপন্যাসে। প্রচলিত অর্থে ভ্রমণকাহিনী নয় এই রচনা, তবু কখন আর কীভাবে যেন শৈশবের সীমানা পেরিয়ে কৈশোরে, দেখার জগৎ ছাড়িয়ে জানার জগতে, অনুভবের স্তর ছাপিয়ে উপলব্ধির গূঢ়তায় পা ফেলতে শিখবে ছোটরা এ-বই পড়তে-পড়তে। ঠিক যেমনভাবে পা ফেলে চলেছিল জয় আর জয়া, দুই ভাইবোন, আকাশের মতো উদার বাবা আর সমুদ্রের মতো গভীর দাদুর হাত ধরে আর হাত ছেড়ে। এ-উপন্যাস সেই জয় আর জয়াকে কেন্দ্র করেই লেখা, তাদের বড় হয়ে ওঠারই কাহিনী। তবু এমনই অনন্য আর অব্যর্থ ভঙ্গিতে সে কাহিনী শুনিয়েছেন সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায় যে, তা আদ্যন্ত মুগ্ধ করে রাখবে প্রতিটি শিশু আর কিশোরবয়সী পাঠকপাঠিকাকে, এমনকি তাদের অভিভাবকদেরও।

About the author

Sanjib Chattopadhyay (Bengali: সঞ্জীব চট্ট্যোপাধ্যায়) (born February 28, 1936 in Kolkata) is a Bengali novelist and writer of short stories. His style is characterised by use of short satirical sentences mixed with very lively language.

Childhood and education:
Sanjib Chattopadhyay spent his childhood in the hilly terrain of Chota Nagpur Plateau under the care of his father after his mother died when he was five. They relocated to Calcutta and he was admitted to Victoria Institution school which he joined at grade seven. He later went to Scottish Church College, Calcutta where he studied chemistry.

Work:
The subjects of his fiction are mostly families living in Calcutta city. Within the confines of these homes, he challenges the moral values of the fast-changing middle class of the city. Chattopadhyay frequently uses old men as his protagonists. These aged characters create the spiritual and philosophical edge found in his novels Lotakambal (The Blanket and Quilt) and Shakha Prasakha (Branches). His most famous novella Swetpatharer tebil (The Ivory Table) is an example of his characteristic style of story-telling which mixes tension, dilemma, curiosity, pity, humor, and satire. He has written fiction for children and continues to write for magazines and newspapers. Chattopdhyay current writing is related to Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Apart from that his notable juvenile literature includes রুকু-সুকু, বড়মামা-মেজমামা series which are fun-filled and analyse various philosophical aspects of life through the eyes of children.

Awards:
Chattopadhyay is the recipient of the Ananda Puraskar in 1981 and the Sahitya Academy Award for his book শ্রীকৃষ্ণের শেষ কটা দিন in 2018.

বইটি জন্মদিনে উপহার পেয়েছিলাম। তখন ক্লাস নাইনে পড়ি।
কি যে ভালো লেগেছিলো। আমার বাড়ির সামনে একটা শিউলি গাছ ছিলো। যেটা এখন আর নেই। যতবার এই বই পড়ি ততবার আমার ছোটোবেলা আর শিউলি গাছের কথা মনে পড়ে।

শিবশঙ্কর, জয়, জয়া, সাহারা, শিরিন কিংবা খড়ক সিং। এই উপন্যাসের কাউকেই ভুলবার নয়। সর্বরিক্ত, সর্বত্যাগী খড়ক সিং চরিত্রটি সদা আত্মভোলাদের প্রতিবিম্ব। শিবশঙ্কর তো কর্মযোগী। তবুও সবাইকে একসময় অতীতকে অতিক্রম করতে হয়, যাত্রা শুরু হয় ভবিষ্যতের পানে। যেথায় শুধু পড়ে থাকে মরচেধরা স্মৃতি। তাতে মরচেরঙে মিশে থাকে ফেলে আসা দিনগুলোর লাল,নীল বর্ণের হাসি-কান্না।

এটা যে কিশোর উপন্যাস তা টের পাওয়া যায় না । দিব্যি পড়ে ফেলা যায়। যৌথ পরিবারে যারা ছিলেন, তারা অতীতে ফিরে যেতে পারেন। খানিকটা আ্যডভেঞ্চারও পাবেন। শেষটায় মনটা হু হু করে উঠতে পারে। আর,শিউলি গাছ? সে তো বহু আনন্দ-বেদনার নির্বাক সাক্ষী।

গুনে গুনে প্রায় অনেক সময় লাগলো বইটা শেষ করতে, আমাকে হঠাৎ হঠাৎ ভূতে পায় আর কি,যে বইগুলো পড়া শুরু করি তা যদি প্রথম ভালোবাসার মত তীব্র অনুভূতি না হলে তবে তাহলে ঘরের কোণে অবহেলায় পড়ে থাকা আসবাবপত্রের মত তাতে ধূলো জমা হয় আর কি!বইটার ক্ষেত্রে ঠিক সেরকমই হয়েছে আর কি,আজ এক পাতা পড়লে পরের পাতাগুলো খোলার পর আবার পরীক্ষায় রিভিশন দেওয়ার মত পড়তে হয়,এ এক নিদারুণ সংকটজনক পরিস্থিতি,এই বইটা একদম নিপাট একটি ভালো বই যাতে মনখারাপের খ খুঁজতে গেলেও ম‍্যাগনিফাইং গ্লাস লাগবে আর কি 😋তাই বোধহয় শেষ করতে একটু বেশিই দেরি হল, কিন্তু শেষটা বড় কাঁদিয়েছে.

জয় জয়া তাদের সুন্দর পরিবার , সরলা নদী ,খড়গ সিং, Manfred , লছমি, শিরীন ফাদার স্টেশন মাস্টার , গিরধারী..... কত উদার সব চরিত্র । জয় জয়া র জ্ঞানপিপাসা , জানার ইছে , শেখার ইছে .......
Read it in one go র মত নয় .. কিন্তু যাত্রা টা খুব সুন্দর ...

শিউলি


জয় আর জয়া, দুই ভাইবোন। তাদের বাবা-মা, দাদু-দিদা সবাইকে নিয়ে মন ভোলানো সংসার। সবাই সবাইকে সবরকম কাজে সাহায্য করে, কাজ করে। হঠাৎ এক সকালে দাদুর বন্ধু মানফ্রেড এসে হাজির হয়। সঙ্গে যোগ দেয় তাদের লোকালয়ের ভবঘুরে খড়ক সিং। খড়ক সিং নাকি রাজস্থানের কোনো রাজার বংশধর।

গল্প চলতে থাকে গল্পের মতো। মানফ্রেড দাদু সরলা নদীর উৎস খুঁজতে বেরিয়ে পড়ে, ওখানেই নাকি আছে সোনার খনি। খড়ক সিং কাশ্মীর যেতে গিয়ে চলে যায় ডুমডুমা। ছোট মেয়ে লছমী এসে পড়ে জয়াদের বাড়ি।

গল্পের শেষে জয়া আর জয়, বাবা-মার সাথে চলে যায় লখনৌ। রেখে যায় একটা চিঠি, তাদের বাড়ির শিউলি বাগানে।

কিশোর মনের মন কেমন করা গল্প। ভালো শিক্ষা, সৎ বুদ্ধি, সৎ পথে পরিচালনার গল্প। ছোটবেলায় স্কুল থেকে ফিরে দুপুরে বসে এই গল্প পড়তে পারলে আরো বেশি একাত্ম হতে পারতাম।

one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. when it ends you would cry why it ended but also realize that it needed to end. things are inevitable to change. the only change is constant. a must-read for kids to teach them compassion and love for nature. we are all part of nature.
