Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of Ottoman Mount Lebanon), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture.
Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

Aku selalu suka baca syair-syair Gibran. Syair yang paling kuingat di buku ini berjudul 'Anakmu'. Syair tersebut mengandung nasihat anakmu bukanlah anakmu tapi milik dunia. Mengingatkanku akan seorang sahabat yang begitu dikekang oleh orang tuanya dalam menentukan pilihan hidup.
Syair itu secara khusus patut dibaca para orang tua atau calon orang tua supaya sadar bahwa anak mereka memiliki panggilan jiwanya sendiri. Anak seorang dokter tak lantas harus jadi dokter, anak petani tak harus juga jadi petani.
Setiap manusia adalah anak dunia yang punya panggilan jiwanya masing-masing.
Syair itu secara khusus patut dibaca para orang tua atau calon orang tua supaya sadar bahwa anak mereka memiliki panggilan jiwanya sendiri. Anak seorang dokter tak lantas harus jadi dokter, anak petani tak harus juga jadi petani.

Karya Kahlil Gibran yang ini saya beli sendiri sewaktu baru masuk kuliah di UMN. Saya membelinya sama Tiara di Blok M, kawasan buku serba ada. Ini recommended buat belajar nulis fiksi.

Aku pernah sangat ingin membaca buku ini, dulu, ketika masih dalam segel, saat ditemukan di rak buku ayah. Namun buku ini harus melebur bersama air yang menyapu rumah ketika banjir datang. Bertahun kemudian, seseorang datang dan menyodorkan buku ini untuk dibaca. Aku hanya dipinjamkan. Tapi, itu membuat hatiku sedikit berdesir. Karena aku telah merindukan buku ini, bahkan sebelum membacanya, sebelum melihat lembaran-lembaran yang penuh dengan kata-kata manis dari Kahlil Gibran. Buku ini menemaniku untuk beberapa saat, ketika menunggunya mengajar, dan menantikan waktu yang bergerak mencapai momen yang akan terjadi di antara kami. Lagi-lagi, terima kasih karena telah membuatku terkejut meskipun tanpa maksud. Kali ini bersama rangkaian keindahan yang dicipta oleh Kahlil Gibran, di tengah dinginnya malam dan hembusan angin yang mengalun lembut membelai pipiku.
