The sequel to Shadow Hunter, and makes a very good second volume of what was obviously intended to be a trilogy. Sadly, Baker died several years ago, and I'm not sure if he ever finished the potential third volume. This is a considerably darker book that Shadow Hunter, but it's all of a piece. The four stars is only because everything is left unresolved. Still, exemplary books in the grand SF tradition of humanity versus nature.
Shamanism masquerading as science fiction: rather entertaining in its awfulness. I could not put it down or take it up: a limbo of unshriven pleasure. But completed (at last!)
