Pertties is socially awkward and extremely frustrated after having spent years trying to piece together the fragments that she has left of her childhood memories. Struggling to figure out who she really is, she spends most of her time hiding behind her poor attitude and sarcastic remarks. Unfortunately, her wit and chastising comments are not enough to keep her from reliving the terror of her forgotten past when she falls into a horrifying new world.
Demented has all the memories that he could ever need, but he too is a social reject and is tired of his place on the bottom rung of the ladder. Having spent his life working as a slave in a terrestrial world doing everyone’s bidding, he’s ready for a change. Prepared to risk all that he knows, he joins Pertties on her reluctant quest to find the Southern Light, even though it goes against his own people – a civilization of burly underground trolls.
Their adventures lead them to discover that there is more going on than what they had originally believed and that they alone are the last hope that the southern territory has against the evil that threatens the land. Knowing that they only have each other, the two team up to escape from the prisons that they have created within themselves (as well as the others that they constantly seem to land in) and in the process find themselves on a journey fraught with danger, demons, and death.
K.D. Montgomery spent her younger years living in daydreams. She created adventure where there was none and she traveled to new worlds daily (but was always forced to come back in time for dinner). She began to chronicle her epic journeys with monsters under kitchen tables and goblins stuck in bathtubs, and she soon realized that as much as she loved to imagine, she equally loved to write. As the years passed, she was instructed to grow under the cliché that she should always keep her feet planted on the ground, so she did, and firmly locked her stories away, until at last forgetting that that part of her ever existed. When she became a mother, the fire of her imagination and her love of storytelling was rekindled as she began to explore the world with her children and remembered how to see the exceptional in the ordinary. She at last realized that keeping your feet on the ground was silly when there were so many more amazing places to be, so she began to write again. Today, K.D. spends her days fighting ghosts out from closets and setting traps for tooth fairies with her five children, then spends her nights traveling far past the stars to other worlds, constantly in search of the new adventures that await her.
This is a standard fantasy story, with lots of action and a good versus evil plotline. The main character, Pertties, is a sassy, wise cracking young heroine who is, at the start of the story, unaware of her true identity. When she crashes her car to avoid hitting a deer, Pertties finds herself lost in unfamiliar territory. Her adventures begin when the earth under her feet gives way and she falls into another world.
Pertties discovers that she is some kind of fairy Princes, and the Protector of the light. A thing that the Troll Queen, Eris wants. The rest of the book deals with Pertties many attempts at running away from the Troll queen and trying to discover who she is and what she must do. During her ‘adventures’ she finds a friend in the shape of a young Troll, Demented, who painstakingly explains the plot to her in a series of long-winded dialogue sections.
I found the main character, Pertties, rather irritating. I wanted her to be killed by at least one of the ‘monsters’ she encounters as she travels through her true homeland Burgen. Demented, comes across as little more than a storyteller, rather than a character, as it is his job to fill in the backstory and plotline. I felt that the ‘baddies’ came across as more interesting characters than the main protagonists, simply because they had more depth to them. Seric, the bat lady was one of my favourite characters.
Most of the dialogue is used to explain the narrative, as a result the flow and pace suffered. Instead of the narrative describing the action, it is mostly explained via conversation. “So how did you do all the rest of that?” he asked, motioning towards the men who were slumped over in an unconscious heap. Pertties giggled, “That right there my friend, is the result of four years of kick boxing lessons.” “Okay, but what about the ropes? How did you get them undone?” “I’m a girl. I have small hands,” she said, holding up her hands for him to see.”
I did not warm to this style of writing. I’m sure that it may appeal to a younger audience, but I wanted more character development and perhaps, an underlying message to hold my continuous attention. That said the author does do action sequences that are, on the whole, well written and exciting. I also enjoyed the stories within the main storyline – in fact I preferred them. These fairy tales, myth and legends sub plots, had more content than the main storyline. The, Peisinoe, sequence was one of my favourite moments, a reminder of the Syrens in Greek mythology luring men to their deaths with their singing. She lures Pertties with the promise of making her more beautiful, pandering to her vain side. This was great, as it gave us an insight into her character through action rather than narration. We get to see that she is a flawed heroine, and not the one-dimensional character she started out as.
I think that the light-hearted narration would appeal to the younger readers. The author uses simple language full of colloquialisms, which helps the reader to identify with the main character. The problem I had with it is that there is just too much exposition and not enough physical action/plot development, to make the narrative interesting. The huge chunks of information about this alternative reality feel contrived and not like natural dialogue between two characters. “Tell me about nymphs,” Pertties said as Demented sat by the fire with his food. “What do you want to know?” he asked as he set down his food and began to stir the fire with a stick. “I don’t care, just tell me about them. Anything.” “Okay. Well, according to legend, when our world was first spun into creation, the land was made…”
However, there are occasions when this kind of exposition does work. I loved this bit: “Well, it is common knowledge. Everyone knows that salt and sand are used to kill manananggals, just like everyone knows that croweders are scared of potatoes. It’s just something that everyone knows.”
I felt that the Prologue wasn’t really necessary. Chapter One is a great way to get into the narrative and the back-story mentioned in the prologue is talked about in later scenes. I did like the idea of Pertties’s adventures being told through the use of fairy stories. There are some nice descriptions of the creatures and their lairs, but the plotline lacks coherence and a strong thread. The disjointed tales are in themselves great little fairy stories, and maybe the book could be that. A modern - day take on Grimm’s tales, only without the morals. I don’t think I will be reading any more of them though.
Pertties is a teenage girl with no memory before the last 5 years of her life when she was found by an elderly gentleman on the side of the road. Having no memories, no home, and no apparent family she is fostered by her rescuer and his wife. Not content with her small town life, she feels something is missing and she is meant for bigger and better things…if only she had known those bigger things would find her when she least expected it and pull her into a world she had never imagined existed.
Thrust into a world of fantasy and mythical creatures Pertties, accompanied by her faithful troll friend Demented who she has no memory of, is forced to survive while trying to uncover the lost memories of her life and avoiding the dangers she escaped from years before. Pertties is a strong character who faces the challenges before her exceedingly well while also adding an element of tenderness to those she comes across. The banter between her and Demented is comical and you can really get a feel of their friendship.
This was a very well-written and easy to read book. K. D. Montgomery was very descriptive in her writing allowing the reader to visualize with clarity a multitude of elements in the book. However, though I did very much enjoy the book, I felt there were many portions of the story that could have been expanded on. Overall, I think it was a fantastic young adult read and I would definitely be interested in reading further installments in this story to see some of my questions answered.
Pertties is a princess from another dimension. She is unaware of that, having no memory of the events that lead to her leaving her world and arriving in ours. So, she grows up with her adoptive parents, has tedious and boring chores on the farm, goes to school (and feels like a nobody), and has an ordinary job. And nightmares.
Then one accident prone day she finds herself propelled back to her world. Of course, she lands right back where she started from when she left that world -- in serious mortal danger, surrounded by trolls that want her dead. Yet she has an unlikely ally, a misfit troll named Demented. (Don't you just love that name?)
Demented helps her escape, and the two embark on a fast based adventure. They have some narrow escapes too. One of my favorite characters was a pixie named Jace. I don't want to spoil anything else, but this book is awesome. It's a wonderful book that you can read to your kids, or enjoy on your own!
Now, I was lucky in that the talented author, K.D.Montgomery was looking for reviewers and accepted my offer to read it, and sent me a PDF copy. This book is soo good that I will be buying a copy! I'm going to need a few more swagbucks though, as I want it in paperback. That way I can read this book again and enjoy the feel and spell of the paper.
Trust me, you don't want to miss this awesome YA Book.
Pertties has no idea who she was or what happened to her prior to 5 years ago. All she knows is her every day is practically the same with school, work, and home. If she wasn’t already having a bad day the fact that she wrecked her car surely didn’t help. If that wasn’t bad enough falling below ground into a world of creatures she had no idea existed didn’t make matters any better. Thrown before the troll queen she discovers memories she didn’t know she had and a most unlikely friend from her past.
The originality of the story keeps your interest, however I had a little trouble warming up to the main character. A bit more in relation to the other characters around her would have been great. I would have loved to see more of the relationship between Pertties and her foster parents. You can relate to and feel her bad day as everyone has them, but what made it easy or difficult to make the decision to stay and continue with her quest? Everyone wants to feel along with their characters every step of the way.
This is an interesting read that young fantasy readers will enjoy. Pertties is not the most likely of heroines and you read along wondering if she is meant for something more than her mundane life up top? I did enjoy the story and it is a great example proving that you are never too old for a young adult read. If you are looking for a story of trolls, mystical creatures, and an unlikely friendship look no further. Enjoy.
From the first sentence, I was completely hooked. Who knew living in a small town could be so exciting. Found near death on the side of the road, a lost girl is found by a compassionate gentleman. The only piece of identification she has is a silver bracelet with Pertties inscribed on it. After looking for parents they weren't going to find, the man who found her and his wife adopt her. She grows up believing she is a part of this small town, while being haunted by terrible nightmares. Just when she dreams of leaving, her whole world is turned upside down. She finds out that who she thought she was and who she really is are two very different things from two very different worlds. Little does she know, she will soon be facing the very person that almost killed her and destroyed her family. But even in the darkest of places, she finds help from an unlikely friend that risks everything to save her from the darkness. Will the Light she carries and protects save her? Or will darkness overtake her world! Ms. Montgomery immerses you in a magical world with wondrous and terrifying creatures. The details and descriptions make you feel like you are truly apart of this magnificently hidden world. The characters are well built and entertaining. Even the names are perfect and have a story as to their origin.
Pertties thinks she is just a normal girl, well normal enough. She has no idea who she is or where she came from, she has no memories except for the past 5 years. After being discovered on the side of the road at the age of 11 by the man, who now with his wife, are taking care of her. The only thing connecting her to who she is, was a silver bracelet with her name on it, Pertties. That and the nightmares..
She goes to school and has a job at the towns only fast food restaurant, she's saving up. She's going to get out of this small town one of these days. Falling into the earth into what appeared to be an underground city wasn't exactly what she had in mind.
With the help of Demented, a troll, and apparent friend from the past. They escape the underground city and the evil enchantress and onto to adventure.
I enjoyed this book, I found it well written and interesting. When Pertties fell through the ground, first thing I thought was Alice falling through the rabbit hole into Wonderland. Full of adventure and just as "Demented".
I would recommend this book for middle grade kids, but closer to the "young adult" ages. The tweens so to speak.
Let me get one thing straight first, I am not a big fan of the YA genre. Maybe if I was younger I could read more of it but at the tender age of 42, I have moved on to more adult books.
BUT, there does come an occasion when a story is so engaging that I get sucked in. The Demented Adventures of Princess Pertties did just that!
Ms. Montgomery wove a wonderful tale and created a new world right before my eyes and I loved it. The character development was spot on and you watched a teenage girl, Pertties, evolve into a great heroine, one who should be able to carry on and lead her kingdom. I originally hoped that she might find her way back home but as the story progressed I knew it was being set up for other installments.
As for her side-kick, Demented the troll, you get the impression early on that he grew up along side her. Only, I'm not sure if he is completely sincere in helping her. I get the underlying impression that he is nothing more than a spy. There is also the fact he is different from the other trolls that leads me to believe he may be human.
Guess we will have to wait and find out with the next book.
Well review time it is! I loved this book.. It's totally a Lord Of The Rings style but it's totally safe for kids to read! My son currently has it so I recommend letting your kids get at it. The story is dark and drawing. Pulling you into a world where even Pertties wants back out, but she learns through trial and error that being safe and happy extends farther than just her own wants in life. The characters are a broad spectrum of fun and light, to dark and twisted. A much sought after balance in some books KD finds it and nurtures it through out her entire story. You're taken to a land not so far away and thrust into secrets and legends that will have your imagination spinning. What if you weren't who you thought? What if you were more? Could you hold up and do what's needed even though your head tells you it's dangerous and threatening? Could you befriend and troll who claims he knows you? Can you trust what you don't know? Find out in this book! 5 out of 5 bright blue stars for KD Montgomery and her debut The Demented Adventures Of Princess Pertties!
This book offers a fun read. A piece of teenage fiction, The Demented Adventures, is a fantasy read that young fantasy lovers will no doubt immerse themselves in.
The narrative is well constructed, with a range of controlled and creative descriptions. The are several great moments of dialogue and peaks of tension, and overall the characters are well created. I didn't particularly warm to the main character. I love strong-willed and sarcastic characters, she is definitely that, but a little too much at times. A little more humility would have allowed me to warm up to her a little more.
Over all, this is a well written and creative read.
Disclosure: This book was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.
This author is very talented and succeeded in creating a supernatural story unlike any I've read about before. She's very descriptive which helps you picture every detail and feel you are right there in the story. It was intially a little hard for me to get into, the sudden jump to a new universe, but I felt as it progressed I enjoyed it more. I would have liked a little more background on the Light, Eros, and Thanatos though...maybe that'll be coming in the second book.
I was a beta reader for this book and found it very entertaining and filled with a great deal of suspense and action. I really enjoyed having the chance to be one of the first to read the full story and can't wait for its release so that I may pick up a copy for myself.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sent this book and didn't know anything about it. I was pleasantly surprised to read this book and find things I haven't seen before in this context. Great flow, character development, plot. Wonderful book. I hope there are more to come!!!
