Anthony Horowitz, OBE is ranked alongside Enid Blyton and Mark A. Cooper as "The most original and best spy-kids authors of the century." (New York Times). Anthony has been writing since the age of eight, and professionally since the age of twenty. In addition to the highly successful Alex Rider books, he is also the writer and creator of award winning detective series Foyle’s War, and more recently event drama Collision, among his other television works he has written episodes for Poirot, Murder in Mind, Midsomer Murders and Murder Most Horrid. Anthony became patron to East Anglia Children’s Hospices in 2009.
On 19 January 2011, the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle announced that Horowitz was to be the writer of a new Sherlock Holmes novel, the first such effort to receive an official endorsement from them and to be entitled the House of Silk.
I think I probably would have enjoyed this book when I was about eleven years old, but unlike much children's fiction this collection didn't allow me to be both the child reader and the adult reader at the same time - perhaps exploding eyeballs just don't have the appeal that they once had.
More Bloody Horrowitz, by Anthony Horrowitz, is a book full of horror stories that are so gruesome, and bloody that you literally back away from the book as you read it. In fact, in this book there are thirteen horror stories, but yet my favorite on was Power. In this story, Elizabeth and Arthur adopt a not-so-easy nephew Craig, who steals, bullies, and make his foster parents waste loads of money on him, even though the don’t have the money. One day, Craig buys a super power kite that can fly and make the person controlling it fly with it, and that when it went wrong, “Craig had wanted to fly… and he had been given his wish”. This was my favorite story because I was able to predict what and how the death happened.
In this story, the author really zoomed in to the last part where Craig tries out the power kite and doesn’t let go. Why he won’t let go, I won’t tell. But I can say that he didn’t intentionally keep holding on to the killer machine. About seven pages out of the twenty-three were written about this part, and in this part, his death is explained in such a nasty way that you can barely hold on to the book.
I really recommend this book to people who like short mysteries and who like horror at the same time. Basically people who like solving crimes. At the end of each story, the author explains what happens, but you are also able to predict this within the story almost every single time. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, and hope you do too.
This book cannot possibly be aimed at kids! This has one of the most spine chilling collections of horror shorts that I have ever read. “Bet your life” was so awful and horror inducing that I had to pause it to catch my breath. I enjoyed the entire collection except the first one about the failed author, although the ending was quite good. The last story, “seven cuts”, was deliciously evil and funny.
Super as always with Anthony Horowitz. Looking forward to reading some of these stories to my class. I think that this set of less gruesome tales (compared to the other two books I have) will suit my new class better.
Twelve tales of unexpected twists and horrific moments. Horowitz once again delights us with chilling encounters, devious devices and naughty children getting overdue commissary. Horowitz delights with imaginatively sinister conclusions and his trademark shifts in the story.
Wanted to give individual reviews initially with my own spin-offs but got bored and decided to just go for conventional review with numbers. 🤣
✍️ The Darren shan curse✍️- 3/5
A vengeful author pens his hatred towards bestselling children’s author Darren Shan for copying his ideas. As he’s life dwindles away unsuccessfully , he plans the perfect revenge.
*********************✍️*********************
The story was a interesting thriller and had the hallmark Horowitz twists in the finale. However, I feel the audience could have related more to the Henry if he actually had a relationship with Darren Shan.
For example, they were childhood friends and loved horror films. However, when Darren Shan becomes successful and henry’s career falls apart. He becomes bitterly jealous. This is until one day, when rummaging through his old school bag, he stumbles upon Darren Shan’s old English book.
He realises he must have switched it with Darren Shan for some assignment and never returned it at the end of the school year. He ponders putting it on bidding on eBay or throwing it in the bin. That is until he opens the book and finds the original “ciruiqe du freak” story written by Darren Shan all those years ago.
Suddenly, a deliciously vengeful idea comes to his mind about how to get the perfect revenge. He’ll change the name on old English book and claim it was his story! Fortunately, he knew a lawyer who was a specialist in the field of copyright. All it would take was peeling on a new label on the front with his name on it. And that’s exactly what he does.
The news causes shockwaves and headlines, with Henry receiving lots of public sympathy. Darren Shan responds by stating that there was no way the book was copied l and it was based off his “life.”
Henry laughs at his pitiful former friend’s sillly defence. When the date of the hearing arrives, Darren Shan doesn’t show up and Henry celebrates with his lawyers. He ends up recovering a massive lump sum of money and becomes the rightful owner of the lucrative series.
As Henry sleeps the next day, he daydreams of busy author signings, exotic holidays and hordes of fans. That is until he hears a break through the window.
Before he can respond, he comes face to face with two people who had entered his room. “So, this is the man whose been bothering you Shan?” Questions the taller man. “Yes he’s the one Mr.Crepsly”. Henry looks flabbergasted as Darren Shan, dressed as a vampire, makes a swipe towards his throat. “I don’t understand! The vampires and all that nonsense was made-up!” He squeals in fear.
Just then, Darren Shan snatches the old English book flicks towards the original story. He turns the book towards a petrified Henry pointing to a disclaimer he’d skipped: “this is the story of my life amongst the secret vampire society. I may publish this story in the future but will most likely leave important details to protect us out. If you have received this book please destroy. Otherwise, we are not responsible for what might happen to your life”
“We warned you” he snarls, before Mr. Crepsly grabs him from the back and cups his mouth. Henry feels himself inhaling something noxious that slowly drifts him to sleep drowsily just before he feels a sharp cutting pain across his neck.
⚡️Bet your life- 2/5
Danny competes in a dangerous quiz show where death is only a wrong answer away. However, that dosen’t stop child prodigy Danny from entering the show. That is until he realises playing dangerous games often have dangerous consequences.
****************** ⚡️ ************************
A 80’s style gameshow with gladiatorial style deaths and punishments. It was interesting seeing Danny’s process through bet your life, alongside other aspiring contestants. It would have been interesting if Danny believes the deaths are staged in the gameshow. However, as the game continues he starts to doubt this. It was a convenient to see the contestants of another game steal his prize i.e playing with fire made him the the victim of another game of fire.
However, I feel there could have been more unexpected moments. For example, Danny was leaked the answers to the questions by a insider in the game for a share of the prize. Despite being a failure, Danny takes the lucrative offer.
As the show continues, the contestants slip-up and fail and Danny continues winning. This is until he reaches the final question and says the wrong answer. Danny is shocked and protests that he knows the answer and it couldn’t be wrong. The gameshow host tuts and shakes his head indignantly, “so did the other contestants Danny, so did they”.
At this point, Danny realises the truth. The other contestants were tricked just like him. Given some answers true and some answers false. Before Danny can say another word, a glass container traps him. Thousands of deadly mosquitoes swarm the area to sting him to death. His cruel and unusual punishment on the hit show “bet on it”.
🚙 You have arrived 🚙 - 4/5
Two bumbling young criminals steal a expensive car for thrills after seeing it unlocked. However, the ride ends with a sinister reality check and a gruesome revelation.
********************🚙***********************
I really liked the idea of a expensive wired car left unlocked to catch two stupid criminals. It was interesting to see the varied personality and perspective between Jayden and Harry.
Although I liked the Venus fly trap symbolism, I felt like Harry’s general reluctance didn’t serve a purpose in the ending. For example, would have been better had Jason got out the car to investigate the clearing.
After waiting a long time impatiently, Jason finally shows up and tells Harry he’s found a road out of the forest. However, he tells him a fallen tree is blocking their entrance. He tells him to please get out of the car and help him move it. Harry freezes up. It’s not Jason’s style to say please. In fact, it’s not Jason’s style to ask for help. Also, why not just ram the BMW into the tree and push it away.
At the same time, Harry has had enough of Jason being in charge. It was Jason’s stupidity in following the GPS route that got them into this mess. This was his opportunity to leave the troublemaker behind. “No, I’ll sort it out myself” he mutters. But before he can start the car, Jason screams and drops to the floor in a pool of blood.
Harry then sees the attacker holding a axe behind Jason’s fallen corpse. Jason had tried to set him up. The killer begins to continue to swing his axe at Jason who screams in pain. Harry is frozen stiff in utter disbelief. That’s before the axe murderer, turns his attention to Harry and swings at the BMW.
The car shakes at the impact like a bump on the road. It causes Harry to snap out of his frozen state of shock. Harry pushes down on the acceleration and the car speeds down through the forest. Although he’s never driven a car before, he’d seen Jason drive enough times to know how.
After a few failed attempts at manoeuvring outside the forest, he’s able to use his phone to get his journey back home. When he reaches his house, he breathes a sign of relief. It’s over, he’s safe. However, when he tries to open the car doors, he realises they’ve been locked. Just then, the car starts driving on autopilot with new co-ordinates. The shrill voice of a women speaks out, “back to the forest. Unfinished business”. Harry screams.
The Cobra 🐍 -1/5
A parody style tale of venomous proportions detailing a immature child learning a lesson on a exotic trip to Morocco.
**********************🐍********************
I liked the funny jokes in the story such as when Dan sticks his middle finger at the snake charmer and then wets the bed in the end. The first half of the story showed some initial promise but then fell flat in snake charmer’s revenge. Also didn’t get the random advertising board in the end.
Would have been better if Dan had refused to backdown on the snake being non-poisonous. He claims this because they are the wrong colours based on what he watched on tv. Nobody listens to Dan a which makes him mad.
When he returns to the hotel, he does a quick Google search and discovers he was right all along! Not only are the snake-charmers snakes non-poisonous, they are often kept as pets and pose no threat to people.
Dan hatches a plan to steal one of the snake charmers snake’s and put it in his bag. After some training, he plans to do his own performance in front of the snake charmer , using a pen in his mouth as a flute. That would teach him a lesson not to deceive people.
The next day he puts his plan into action by luring the snake into his bag using a fake mouse. However, once he arrives home, the snake bites him as he pets him. Paint ends up on Dan’s hand and he realises the snake had been painted on! It was actually a deadly cobra!

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I can't rate this book decently because of the transphobic nature of one of the stories. Even without that, this is definitely weaker of Horowitz horror stories. A lot of them are worse re-hasing of stories he has already written.
The Man Who Killed Darren Shan: 3/5 stars for taking out the competition. Bet Your Life: 0/5 stars for Transphobia. I don't know what it says when a character wanting to transition is replaced by wanting to help donkeys in the re-released. This story also has an unchallenged Ableism. You Have Arrived: 2.5/5 stars for Dionaea Muscipula. The Cobra: 2/5 stars for Spare Parts. Transmission: Not really a story, just an excuse for a poem and a questionable fake letter. Bad Dream: A poem about the mud coming for revenge for the father's sins. 2/5 stars. 'Why Horror has No Place in Children's Place by Wendy Grooling'-Here's a quote about J.K. Rowling 'It's all too often forgot that she has single-handly taught an entire generation the value of reading,' This is meant to be a joke (I think), but I wouldn't be surprised if that the coolaid that Just Kidding is drinking now, especially when she has the gull to imply that Autistic people are too confused to know their own genders. Even as a former HP fan, I liked books before I had read a single word she had ever written. How odd that ended up reading this book this week. Horrorword: A crossword which is problematic and kinda bad anyway as a crossword. My Bloody French Exchange: 3/5 stars for the same twist and I'm gonna straight-up reference it. SheBay: 1/5 stars because Human trafficking online is definitely real and horrifying. Are you sitting Comfortably?: 3/5 stars for life insurance. Plugged In: 4/5 stars for Not Trusting Your Neighbours. Power: 2/5 stars for extreme sports. Seven Cuts: 1/5 stars for not respecting women
Ik heb de eerste 3 verhalen gelezen en toen heb ik het opgegeven. De verhalen deden me niets, vond ze niet echt griezelig en ook niet orgineel. Jammer want magpie murders was wel goed en orgineel.
This is simply a lot of fun. The stories work, they are sharp and scary and I loved all the faux advertisements, puzzles, poems and letters that are included to give the book an old school horror comic feel. Anthony Horowitz is a fantastic author who can seemingly turn his hand to any genre. I really enjoyed this.
