About the author

Balakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.

He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".

In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.

If you want to know anything and everything about Rajendra Chola, then this book is for you,the author Balakumaran who continues the history of Cholas after Udaiyar examines every aspect of
the life of Rajendra Chola and crafts an extremely detailed and dense history of the great man and his conquests.This book never runs dry,it keeps you glued throughout the 500 odd pages ,as a whole this is wonderful for anyone who loves history like myself.

Rajendra Chola has always been a fascinating figure to me. Modern society likes to portray him as a ruthless ruler and focus on the number of deaths involved in his conquest, but you just can't retrospectively judge figures from history with modern morals and ethics.

Balakumaran once again brings the world of Cholas to life, but he never veers off into imagination or speculation - he constantly reminds readers of how little there is left, how much is still unknown.One character that got me interested was that of Veerama Devi one of the wifes of Rajendra Chola,she was a warrior who could throw a spear riding a horse with so much ease,that Rajendra
Chola used her for covet operations like the present day US Marine sent her into other kingdoms.This makes me wonder how far advanced they were on on the role of women warriors.Her role looks like it would continue in the second part.

Like Udaiyar the authors knowledge about the cholas is incredible, and like his previous works his narration is always brillant...He has brought so much interest in Cholas and their life, someone shuld translate this great work so it can be enjoyed by a lot of people.\\

Didn't felt like reading a historical story. Depicted characters in this story, i felt debased... especially rajendran chozhan sister kunthavi and other women characters too. Those women came under the frame of Society's "deciplined women phrase" escaped from abusive. Not interested to read further parts.

Somewhere I felt the burning passion and desire the author had for Rajarajan is obviously missing as I read through Rajendran. Too many characters so much of chaos which makes it clearly obvious the lack of a solid plot. Although it doesn't inspire you like Rajarajan you may still wish to read through the next volumes to find out what happens as the Royal Cholan army marches across borders and countries in name of their people and culture!

அருமையான நடை. விறு விறுவென்று உள்ளது. நடுவில் கீழே வைக்க முடியாதபடி நல்ல வேகம் மற்றும் எதிர்பார்ப்புடனான எழுத்துக்கள். வெகு சிறு பதிகங்களே.. வாழ்வில் மாற்றம் நிச்சயம் என்பது பொன்னியின் செல்வன், உடையார், கங்கை கொண்ட சோழன் படிக்க நன்கு உணரலாம்..

பாலகுமாரனின் உடையார் படித்திருக்கிறேன். எனவே அதன் தொடர்ச்சியான கங்கை கொண்ட சோழன் நூலையும் அந்த தொடர்சியின் காரணமாகவே படித்தேன்.
உடையாரிலேயே பாலகுமாரனின் எழுத்து நடை எனக்கு பிடிக்கவில்லை. ஆயினும் தமிழ் மன்னர்கள், சோழ வரலாறு பேசும் நூல் என்ற ஒரே காரணத்திற்காகவே படித்தேன். இந்நூலும் அவாறான எழுத்து நடையே. இதை ஒரு நாவலாக இரசித்து படிக்க என்னால் முடியவில்லை. ஒரு பத்து வயது சிறுவன் எழுதிய வரலாற்று புனைவு என்றே எண்ணத்தொன்றுகிறது. மிகவும் ஆழுமையற்ற எழுத்தாட்சி. 3/5 கொடுத்திருப்பது சோழ வரலாறு கூறும் நூல் என்பதாலேயே. இல்லாவிட்டால் 1/5 தான்.

சில பாத்திரங்கள் மிகவும் விலாவாரியாக அறிமுகபடுத்தப்படும், அதன்பிறகு அந்த பாத்திரம் என்ன ஆனது என்றே தெரியாது.

ஒரு சமையல் வர்ணணை என்றால் வாசிப்பவருக்கு நீர் சுரக்க வேண்டும். கீழ்கண்டவாறு எழுதினால் எவ்வாறு இருக்கும்?

“காய் கறிகளை வெட்டினார்கள். போட்டார்கள். எரித்தார்கள். கறி வெந்தது. உண்டார்கள். படுத்தார்கள்.”

எல்லா வர்ணணைகளும் இவ்வாறே. ஒரு உப்புச்சப்பு இல்லா வர்ணணைகள்.

மொத்தத்தில், வரலாற்று நிகழ்வை அறியும் ஒரே நோக்கில் இதை படிப்பதாயின் சரி. ஒரு நாவல் என்று இரசித்து படிப்பதாயின் இது உங்களுக்கு உகந்ததல்ல.

மற்றுமொறு சரித்திர நாவல் , பாலகுமாரன் ஐய்யாவிடமிருந்து. மற்றுமொறு பயணம் சோழ தேசத்தில் . சென்ற முறை உடையாரில் கோவக்காரனாய் உள்ளே நுழைந்த இராஜேந்திர சோழன் இந்த முறை இராஜ பரிபாலனங்களை முறையே கையாளும் மாமன்னன். சிவத்தொண்டு செய்து முடித்தான் இராஜராஜன் . தன் தேசத்தை விரிவாக்கி தன் நாகரிகத்தை விரிவாக்க கிளம்பினான இராஜேந்திரன் . உடையாரில் இராஜராஜ சோழனை கையாண்டதுப் போலவே , இராஜேந்திரனின் குணங்களில் மாற்றம் எதுமின்றி கையாளப்படும் விதமே பாலகுமாரன் ஐய்யாவின் மொழி ஆளுமை. மாபெரும் படையெடுப்பின் ஆரம்பம் என்னவென்று கண் முன்னே நிறுத்துவதில் வெற்றி காண்கிறார் பாலகுமாரன் ஜய்யா. கண்ணுக்கெட்டிய வரை எதிரிகள் இல்லாதவனுக்கும் கவலைகளுண்டு , அவன் கண்ணுங்குவதில்லை என்னும் கருத்து தான் முதல் பாகத்தில் நமக்கு தெளிவாய் தெரிகிறது.

story of one of the greatest thamizh emperors viz. rajendra cholan, told in his inimitable style by balakumaran. balakumaran is a genius and i am yet to read any works even equalling his caliber. but in the last volume, he appears to have finished the story in a hurried manner. this review is common for all four volumes.

The authenticity and the miniature detailing with the number of characters used and justified each and everyone. The strong hold on making the moral of kaveri civilization and the ambition and the way it was explained was truly outstanding. The characteristics of Rajendra chola and his attitude were very good and almost made me visualize the facial reactions he would have made for every reaction.

I was just amazed by the work of our kalki and became a fan of the chola's. I was eagerly waiting for the continuation of balakumaran udiyar writing. I loved the first part of the book and still my thirst for the chola's history did not end. I love this book. You'll definitely love it!!
