I recently read "A Journey Through Grace" by Kit Mei Fung and I can't stop raving about it! If you're interested in the complex contemporary dynamics of Chinese mother-daughter relationships, this book is a must-read.
Kit delves expertly into the complexities and nuances of this relationship, delivering a compelling examination that left me with tremendous respect, comprehension and appreciation for the bond between Chinese mothers and daughters. She peers into the cultural and generational divides, illuminating the common problems and misunderstandings and resolves to break free to find the solace she craves. She, albeit as herself, brings the characters to life with her vivid words, allowing us to engage in their joys, sufferings, and growth.
The concept of inner strength is one of the book's most resonant themes. She endures many hurdles as she embarks on her own adventures. Nonetheless, through perseverance and self-sacrificing patience, she discovers within herself the resilience to endure adversity. Kit exemplifies how the strength of desire and the ability to weather adversity may lead to personal growth and transformation. Furthermore, she also finds forgiveness, comfort and guidance in her religious beliefs, notably in her relationship with God and the serendipitous occurrences in her life. This spiritual investigation adds another layer of depth to the story, emphasizing the power and comfort that may be found in one's spirituality.
Kit’s story distinguishes herself among modern Chinese American authors writing in this area because she bravely writes through her pain and experiences. Her storytelling is vibrant, real and genuine, and she offers a distinct point of view to the table. While other excellent authors have explored comparable issues fictionally, Kit's ability to infuse her narrative with grace, honesty and tenderness truly distinguishes her from the others. We read and feel her pain as she struggles to find hope in the situations that are handed to her. Her depiction of the Chinese American experience and living the American dream, especially the complexity of mother-daughter filial relationships, is both familiar and illuminating.
In conclusion, "A Journey Through Grace" is a powerful and moving book that delves into the depths of Chinese mother-daughter relationships while highlighting the strength that can be found in persistence, patience, and faith. It is a heartfelt and thought-provoking read that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the complexities of these relationships. Kit's storytelling prowess and her ability to capture the essence of the Chinese American experience make this book a standout and powerful read in its genre. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an engaging and emotionally resonant read.
I read a Journey Through Grace in one day and was unable to put it down. This book is so well written. I thank Kit for sharing her life experience with us. Kit was very brave to navigate back to her difficult childhood and described to the readers how she coped with many adversities. She was feeling unloved with disappointments and yet she found the eternal and unconditional love from God in her adult life. She finally understood everything that happened to her was God’s plan and she is now stronger than ever.
Her story inspired me on so many levels: her strength, her ability to forgive, her generosity of giving love and most importantly on how to deal with daily challenges. We really do not have control on many aspects of our lives and there is a greater plan for us if we have faith in God.
Kit also accurately described the political and economic conditions for Hong Kong and the way of life for immigrants in New York Chinatown in the 70s. My family and I immigrated from Hong Kong to New York around the same time. I am very connected to the environment in her story as a teenager. This book also provided good insight into traditional Chinese culture, particularly the importance of saving face, which is the concern one feels regarding what people would say about us.
I am sharing Kit's book with my friends and family because we all could learn so much from reading it.
As part of a book club, we decided to read A Journey through Grace – A Memoir by Kit Mei Fung. Shortly thereafter I got comments like “I love that book!” or “I started reading the book and I can’t put it down!” Well, I felt exactly the same way! She had my attention from page one.
The book covers her life from early childhood to adulthood, starting in Hong Kong and then moving to the United States. Her writing transports you to wherever she is. It is a story of physical and emotional pain, survival and forgiveness. It is a testament to what we can accomplish and overcome if we but persevere. With the eyes of faith, now as an adult, she can see, the light of God’s grace flowing through even the darkest of times.
Although my growing up experience was different in many ways, this book touched me deeply on a personal level. Kit’s vulnerability, honesty and deep insights make the book heart wrenching in parts but also truly inspiring.
I would highly recommend this book. I walked away with greater insights into my own life and extreme gratitude for Kit for sharing so openly and so beautifully. She has given us this gift, now it’s up to each one of us, to look at our lives and struggles, to work on healing the past, and to see God’s grace through it all. What a gem!
Kit’s compelling story of the difficult challenges she confronted as young girl in China and after emigrating to the US, is engrossing from cover to cover. While it is clearly Kit’s very personal and heart-wrenching journey, it speaks to the struggles we all encounter in some way or another in our lifetimes. In each chapter of the book as Kit takes us through her childhood, adolescence, adulthood, traditions, relationships, and history you will find yourself reflecting upon your own life. While Kit endured tremendous hardship, sharing it with her readers in painstaking and horrifying detail, you will be inspired by her message of finding joy, hope and ultimately faith in each and every day we are blessed with, no matter how dark. Her compassion for others, her fortitude, and her capacity to forgive and learn from troubling times with grace, purpose and wisdom truly demonstrates the resiliency of the human spirit.
My heart ached for Kit with what she had to suffer at the hands of her mother. I know people from that era in Hong Kong, and they often speak about the hardships they had to live through. But Kit’s story is truly astonishing, and poignant in that there were unimaginable challenges after challenges, on two different continents with different issues and situations.
It is a raw, profound story of survival and thriving despite difficult circumstances.
It is so inspiring and encouraging to know that she’s overcome and triumphed.
I would say thank you to Kit for bravely sharing her story with us and letting us in on her graceful journey of forgiveness, perseverance, and resiliency.
I read this book twice! The first time, I couldn't put it down, I finished it in one day. This is an inspiring and a deeply moving memoir by Kit Mei Fung. The story of a child trying to survive through hardship and her difficult childhood, through adolescence and becoming an adult. A remarkable story of how the God's grace can transform a life and inspire her to write this book. This book is a reflection on the themes of identity, belonging, and the pursuit of happiness. The author took us to Kit Mei Fung's intimate and inspirational act of her life.
This is a poignant and unusual immigrant story as it details an aspect of Asian immigration often not told. That the Asian community is the poorest ethnic group in New York City comes as a surprise to many, but Kit's story describes in great detail and pathos the poverty, cultural conflict, and challenging family dynamics that many Chinese immigrants experience...far from the model minority script. Kit's story also is a story of mothers, daughters, and their complicated relationships characterized by love, dreams, sacrifice, cruelty, and ultimately acceptance.
This is a fantastic memoir! Kit has a marvelous way of drawing the reader into each scene as she describes the compelling story of her life. It will have you crying tears of both sadness and joy. She shows so much vulnerability in sharing her story. The book is truly a blessing-it will inspire you, challenge you, remind you of God’s grace. Kit, thank you for sharing your heart and story! I highly recommend this book!
A friend gave me this book. What a wild journey from childhood to adulthood and from Hong Kong to the US. Honest reflection of her life, thanks for sharing.
Amazing! I loved this book, found it to be so uplifting. I couldn't put the book down! It shows that it's possible to have bad experiences at a young age, but still live a fulfilling life inspiring others.
