From Almanac of Fall (1984) to The Turin Horse (2011), renowned Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr has followed the collapse of the communist promise. The “time after” is not the uniform and morose time of those who no longer believe in anything. It is the time when we are less interested in histories and their successes or failures than we are in the delicate fabric of time from which they are carved. It is the time of pure material events against which belief will be measured for as long as life will sustain it.

About the author

Jacques Rancière (born Algiers, 1940) is a French philosopher and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris (St. Denis) who came to prominence when he co-authored Reading Capital (1968), with the Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser.

Rancière contributed to the influential volume Reading "Capital" (though his contribution is not contained in the partial English translation) before publicly breaking with Althusser over his attitude toward the May 1968 student uprising in Paris.
Since then, Rancière has departed from the path set by his teacher and published a series of works probing the concepts that make up our understanding of political discourse. What is ideology? What is the proletariat? Is there a working class? And how do these masses of workers that thinkers like Althusser referred to continuously enter into a relationship with knowledge? We talk about them but what do we know? An example of this line of thinking is Rancière's book entitled Le philosophe et ses pauvres (The Philosopher and His Poor, 1983), a book about the role of the poor in the intellectual lives of philosophers.

Most recently Rancière has written on the topic of human rights and specifically the role of international human rights organizations in asserting the authority to determine which groups of people — again the problem of masses — justify human rights interventions, and even war.

In 2006, it was reported that Rancière's aesthetic theory had become a point of reference in the visual arts, and Rancière has lectured at such art world events as the Freize Art Fair. Former French presidential candidate Ségolène Royal has cited Rancière as her favourite philosopher.

Bela Tarr filmlerini ve benzeri kült bazı kitaplardan uyarlanmış filmleri izlemiş iseniz -Lanet, Almanya/Sıfır Yılı, Mouchette, Baraka İnsanları, Yabancı gibi- sizin için de faydalı bir okuma olacağı kesin.
Tamamlayacı bir kitap. Hem Bela Tarr filmleri hem de Laszlo Krasznahorkai’nin kitaplarını okumak isteyenler için öneririm. Mis gibi bir iş, tertemiz. Çeviri de baskı da çok özenli. Lemis Yayınlarının ellerine sağlık olsun. Böyle işler kenarda köşede kalmasa ne güzel olur. Kıymetli bir iş çıkmış ortaya.

İncelemelerin bir düşünür, felsefeci elinden çıktığı çok belli. Filmler üzerinden yaptığı felsefeyi çok sevdim. Tespitlerini, üslubunu, dilini, anlaşılır anlatımını da. Sevdiğim birçok filmin, film karakterlerinin, kitap karakterlerinin bahsinin geçiyor olmasından da ayrıca keyif aldım.
İşte syf 49’a yerleştirilmiş bir gönderme: “İnsan hayatı belki de ses ve öfkenin bir budala tarafından anlatılan hikayesinden ibarettir. “

İzlememiş olmam kaynaklı bazı filmlere ait incelemelerde eksik hissettim. Listeye ekledim adı geçen filmleri. Kısacık, 78 sayfa bu kitap muhtemelen elimin altında bulunacaklardan biri oldu. Listeye aldıklarımı izledikçe kitaba tekrar tekrar döneceğim o kada belli ki.

Yazarın Cahil Hoca kitabını severek okumuştum yıllar önce, başka bir kitabını edinmemiş olduğuma üzüldüm.

Un ensayo brillante. Jacques Rancière es uno de los más agudos pensadores actuales de la estética del cine. Béla Tarr es posiblemente el mejor cineasta contemporáneo. Este ensayo está a la altura de las circunstancias. Tarr hace un cine tan hipnótico como desconcertante. Rancière logra poner en palabras lo que capta desde una sensibilidad extremadamente cultivada, erudita, sísmica. Creo que acierta Rancière cuando rechaza la interpretación corriente del cine de Tarr. No se trata de una alegoría del fin de las ilusiones. Tampoco es un cine socialista en su etapa temprana seguido de un cine desencantado con el comunismo y con el capitalismo en su etapa madura. La estética de Tarr recorre otros caminos. El mensaje es todavía peor, más tenebroso. Dice Rancière que Tarr filma la materialidad del mundo sensible en su implacable devenir, en su sensorialidad refractaria, en el vacío schopenhaueriano que se intuye en el fondo del mundo humano. Tarr propone una estética fuerte de la imagen-tiempo en el sentido del Bergson de Deleuze. Es decir, la sustancia de sus películas estaría en la circulación del afecto, no en su fijación. La circulación particular de las imágenes de Tarr es envolvente, se estampa en los personajes, los aplasta en su concreción visual. Al modo de Schopenhauer, lo único que nos quedaría es la voluntad ciega que intenta imponerse sobre ese vacío. Esto explicaría el uso dominante del plano secuencia en Tarr. Tiene sentido. También explicaría su circularidad diegética, su música recursiva y melancólica, y el movimiento que va siempre del entorno al personaje, que primero aparece como parte del entorno pero nunca deja de ser una llegada muda del entorno al personaje. La textura visual de un feroz blanco y negro, la niebla, los árboles, los animales, los campesinos, todo es implacable en Tarr. El supuesto desencanto político, la pérdida de toda ilusión queda en definitiva absorbida por la suspensión semántica. Opino que Rancière insiste en esta restricción ontológica sin dar un paso más para que el lector dé ese paso. Pienso que nos invita a recordar que el ser humano no puede dejar de atribuir significados. Creo que este libro de Rancière queda abierto, interrumpido, para que el lector lo continúe, para que descubra que es imposible suspender el pensamiento y que el pensamiento lleva a la destrucción. En síntesis, opino que este libro es extraordinario, deslumbrante, una clave para ver el cine de Tarr pero también para tratar de entender dónde estamos y hacia dónde vamos.

The book isn’t enough for The Cinema of Bela Tarr. Ranciere tries to explain it with 5 themes. He usually tells the summary of Tarr’s movies under the themes. Analyses are insufficient. Nevertheless, the book is important. Because there isn’t a lot of information about The Cinema of Bela Tarr.

Es una pequeña pieza clave para poder comprender la obra de Tarr. Un repaso cronológico y ameno por toda su filmografía, analizando su forma y política desde una visión no tan común, proponiendo nuevos puntos de vista capaces de resignificar algunas de sus cintas.
Muy acertada su definición y análisis del plano de Tarr, usando el bressoniano como polo opuesto pues, irónicamente, es el cineasta más cercano —en su visión sobre el cine— al húngaro, aún comprendiendo cada uno el plano de forma distinta y poseyendo ideologías radicalmente adversas.

Rancière’s analyses fall a little short in certain areas and fail to comprehend the full complexity of Tarr’s films, not because Rancière is a poor writer or thinker— no, this is a brilliant meditation on one of the most enthralling filmmakers of the 20th century— but because Tarr’s cinema is so multilayered that it’s quite literally insane and impossible to expect it to be wholly distilled in < 90 pages. A smart, eloquent, deep analysis into Bela Tarr's films that dissects the differences between his early work and his subsequent black-and-white slower and more contemplative style. A good delve into the state of his characters, how he likes to portray "idiots" and how his camera frames as if it's the space and the setting moving around the characters instead of vice versa.

A poetic study of Tarr as an auteur, highlighting the overarching themes of circularity and decency. Rancière also has a great understanding of the differences between the literary works that Tarr base his scenarios on and the resulting long-take sequences.
