Jaine Austen once again takes a freelance writing gig for a crazy client—this time for the owner of a matchmaking service, who is charging her clients crazy prices and promising them billionaires and famous Hollywood stars as matches… and has no one to offer but people one might not see as catches. She also forces Jaine to go on some unappealing dates under the guise of getting to know how the process works. These were quite funny. As one could guess in a murder novel, the matchmaker ends up dead and Jaine, who had nothing good to say about her, becomes a suspect. I particularly loved the terrible arranged dates in this one (the one who was obsessed with Jaine’s cat Prozac was terribly funny.)

Thought the book was great! A wonderful blend of comedy and mystery. I've read and enjoyed them all. What I don't understand is why some reviewers take off stars because the book "lacks substance" or they like less humor. I mean, if they looked at the cover, read the blurb, and wanted something with a little more substance, than they must be atrociously bad at picking out books. Just saying. Laura Levine writes delightfully funny books, and does it very well.

ok ... this cozy mystery -- I guess it is technically a mystery -- was just a bit too cutesy for me.

It's loaded with cliches and feeble name puns including the main character and narrator Jaine Austen, an overweight, food-obsessed divorcee with her adorable kitty named Prozac. Her next-door neighbor is a self-centered gay man named Lance; her parents live across the country in a retirement community and send dueling emails. In the course of the story, Jaine is set up with a wealthy septuagenarian named Skip who is more enthralled with the kitty cat than with her.
Jaine admits, then keeps reminding the reader that she babbles when she is nervous. This entire story gave me the same feeling of being trapped at an event by someone who keeps chattering at you while you are trying to politely walk away.

I've followed the Jayne Austen series since it first came out in the early 2000s, and was happy to finally get back to it after falling behind a couple of years. This is the 12th book of that series, and the main character, Jaine, is just as refreshing as I remember. I did kind of wish that she had moved up some from her somewhat bare-bones existence, however. She's a freelance writer, which means pay isn't consistent, but it would be nice if she finally got to a good, steady place. Her flamboyant friend and neighbor, Lance, is as fun as ever, as well as her sometimes uppity cat, Prozac. The mystery in this one was compelling and fun to solve. So many good suspects! Just a few stray quotation marks that were out of place but otherwise a very good, easy read.

The first book I read in 2014 - and I hope every book I read this year is going to be this great! I love Laura Levine's Jaine Austin series - her stories always make me laugh. Any book that contains the line "And then the squirrels attacked." is a winner to me! Can't wait for the next in the series.

Killing Cupid by Laura Levine is the 12th book in the Jaine Austen Mystery series. Jaine is hired to write promotional material for the Dates of Joy matchmaking service, but finds her new employer is running a scam service. It is no surprise when Joy is poisoned. A very funny and entertaining book that had me laughing throughout. An enjoyable escape.

A cute cozy that came just at the right time. I love Jaine's sense of humour and it was hilarious seeing her keep going out on with her blind date. Also loved the interactions with her cat!

Prozac stole the show and saved the day in this episode, Book #12. Jaime finds herself tangled up in the dating game and becomes the amorata of a ditzy old codger. But, is it really Jaime he finds so attractive or is it actually Prozac? Read to find out.

Tonio wasn’t mentioned in the epilogue, so I guess he lived happily ever after??

Editorial Error - no seatbelts in the Bentley because it’s a dated relic, but a few chapters later they are strapping themselves in??? Again Ms Levine describes a Tiffany’s box as turquoise. Robin’s Egg Blue is how it is universally known. Sort of like her calling the soles of Christian Louboutin’s shoes bright pink. She seems to have a problem with color, like her character Greg Stanton!!

I love reading Janie Austen cozy mysteries. They are so humorous and scary at the same time. Janie always seems to end up in a very dangerous situation where she risk her life, to capture a killer. Her cat, Prozac and her neighbor, Lance, are both a great addition to Ms. Levine, already very funny stories.

I highly recommend these books...

Audiobook
Story: D, Narration: B-

Not a review, just some thoughts for personal reference. Spoilers.

This book has so many great reviews, so I'm apparently the outlier. This just goes to show that people like different things and that's ok.

I listened to the book, and wondered if some of the problem was the narrator. She wasn't terrible, for the most part, but her character voices and chirpy/snarky tone throughout the book rubbed me the wrong way. For instance, was it really necessary to give Jaine's gay BFF, Lance, a lisp? But maybe that's putting too much on the narrator since he was written in such an OTT flaming way, while also being shallow and self-absorbed. Why were he and Jaine even friends? I couldn't see it.

Honestly, tho, I felt close to zero interest, connection, or empathy for any of the characters. Some were boring, some just awful human beings. I wouldn't want to know any of them. Sadly, that includes the cat, Prozac. Normally, I'm such a pushover for book cats, but Prozac is in good company with the rest of these unappealing characters. It was nice that the author gave the characters relatively happy endings in the epilogue--much better than most deserved, including the killer.

The plot itself wasn't bad and there were so many possible culprits that I didn't guess the baddie 'til the end. Yes, the motive was a little far-fetched, but that's kinda the norm for cozies so it didn't bother me.

I was divided about the humor at the outset. There was a lot of funny dialogue and observations, but it was often forced and overdone. And sometimes mean-spirited. Enough with the jokes about Jaine's weight, eating, and fitness. (Really, there was too much emphasis on eating in general.) There was a scene with squirrels that was supposed to be hysterically funny, I guess, but was just stupid. Most of the time, a subtle, light touch works better than slapsticky, trying too hard humor, imo. I thought about ditching this book about halfway through, but then there were some good one-liners that made me keep going. Part of me wishes I'd gone the DNF route after all.

Several final things. First, when things were getting wrapped up, I wondered, "But who pushed the shopping carts at Jaine?" We do find out, but it was ridiculous and irrelevant. Second, another comment about the narration. So many mispronounced words. Everyday words, for the most part, but P.G. Wodehouse's name was mispronounced several times. If you're making use of a famous author, say his name correctly. And, speaking of famous authors, what was the point of the main character's name? I guess it was supposed to be funny but, like most of the humor in the book, it was tiresome. And, the tiresome reference segues nicely to Jaine's parents. Ugh, just go away.

So, it's pretty obvious I won't be continuing with the series.

Book 12. Well the junk Food - Aholic Jaine Austin and her side kick Prozac her Temperamental Cat ( Yes Cat lol) has a new client Joy that has heard Great Views of Jaine's work to put together Slogans and such. ( like Toilet Masters her first work). Joy wanted her to make up some things of her Dating Group. Maine said yes. ( But oh how she really have not Said yes since Joy was not a Very nice person). At first Joy called her told Jaine to come to office and she would see if Jaine qualifys . ( mean right!) Well when she got there Jaine found a Young lady with Purple Punk Rock Style Hair and all kinds of jewelry Cassie and a nerdy guy named Travis that acted like they had Pity on her.Joy came out looking like a rich overweight kind of woman that presented herself with a whole bunch of jewelry. She saw Jaine and looked her up and down then she told Maine to come with her. So I guess she had passed the test. Well nothing what as it seemed at the studio especiall the Gorgeous Like models and Hot Men.Jainet started getting suspicious. After awhile Joy told Jaine that she needed her to date one man. Joy said he was Blue eyed and 6 foot tall. Well when he met her at her house. She sure was flabbergasted. Yes he had Blue eyes but Holy Cow Joy sure did not tell her that he was like 80 or older. When he came in her house he started getting googly eyed over her cat Prozac. Stan said she looks like my Ms. Maple that had died. He was not paying any real attention to Jaine. And when they went to a Rich Restaurant that sold Steaks to die for. Stan deciced that he would order for her. And oh boy did she get Stunned to Silence when he ordered her vegan plate. She wanted straddle him. But after awhile Maine had to go to a Date Party that Joy told her she had to attend. She sire did not want to. Well Maine showed up. And heard Tonio ( her boy toy) and Joy were yelling I'm going to get the cops to arrest Tonio. So when that not enough Joy screamed at everyone st Party screaming who Damn ate all my Godiva candies she had one left and screamed there was 10 in the box. Then she ate the last one and fell on the floor. That was the last time she would worry about her Godiva chocolates. Well their a whole slung of suspects including you Guessed it Jaine. I Absolutely love Laura book series. They always hablar some plots where I Laugh Out Loud. Humorous with Prozac the kitty and Jaine's parents email each other. If you want some Pure Fun Laughs you should try this series

Killing Cupid was a predictable story by Ms. Levine. I have read all of the series and they all seem to run together. Now I realize that it is a book in a series, and I generally read all the books in a series, but this one was just too much the same as the one before, and the one before that. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, Just that it's time for Jaine to move on to the next phase in her life. Time to make a commitment, to either/or/and her life, her job, her relationship, it's just time.
I have read series after series, and have never felt this way before. I'm not saying this is a bad book, in fact it was pretty enjoyable, maybe if I hadn't read all of the other books, I would have accepted this one easier. I truly don't intend to insult Ms. Levine, is it perhaps time to move on to another series, or really shake this one up? Remember, I am just a reviewer, and this is my opinion, you will need to read the book for yourself.

I often make impulse book buys based only on the cover. In this case, I picked this up along with two over Jaine Austin books simply because they had cats on the cover. What I did not expect to get was a series of books with a character who I love....who reminds me of me...and that are packed full of humor and wit. I love the writing, the way the oddball cast of characters is described, how the continued shenanigans of her father are described and even Prozac, the cat. These are just feel good mysteries. You laugh while you read them and the humor just adds to the plot rather than masks it. The mystery itself is solidly written and engaging. Read these if you have not read them already. I wish I had discovered these year ago!

I thought that, in the past, I had underestimated past books by otherwise favorite authors. I also thought that this book would turn out to be very enjoyable, even if the climax would be inferior. But the opposite happened. This book proves that I didn't underscore the underwhelming books in this series. I was dying to read Killing Cupid. The facts must be faced though. It's a weak effort by Laura Levine and it's clearly apparent she was just going through the motions. I'm glad she found a cash cow and I'm sad she no longer has her muse. I will keep on reading her future offerings. I dearly wish she has a good novel inside her.

Laugh out loud funny!

I love this series. Poor Jaine and Lance are always so unlucky in love and I love reading about their mishaps. This one really goes to show you never know who will be a homicidal maniac. Prozac and Daddy are always good for some laughs as well.

This series is fully a guilty pleasure audio book experience for me. They are light, fluffy and a bit like angel food cake - all air. The main characters harshness about her appearance as well as the appearances of other characters is a little dated, in my opinion. This book seemed extra guilty if this as it was centered around a dating service in LA.

I'll continue with the series because I like brain candy as much as I enjoy a skor bar. Sometimes it's what you need in the moment to get you through the day.

As it appears on my blog:
Hey, Folks!
I spent my day absorbed in the world of Jaine Austen, Laura Levine's somewhat eccentric writer turned amateur detective. Her latest adventure, in bookstores now, is entitled "Killing Cupid." It was furnished to me by Kensington Publishing Corporation through netgalley.com, which is why you are reading this page. Regardless of the source of the novel, I will always tell it like it is.
Valentine's Day is close at hand, and Ms. Austen agrees to take a job developing printed material for a singles service called Dates of Joy. Excitement abounds for the protagonist, until she meets her employer, Joy Amoroso, and discovers what the assignment is really about. This exacting business woman is expecting not only glowing prose for an advertising brochure, but also fictitious biographies to go along with the photos of the actors and models posing as participants on the company web site. At every turn dissatisfied customers seem to be threatening fraudulent matchmaker, and Jaine becomes further involved in the drama when she becomes a client. The suitor is not Prince Charming, but an obsessive septuagenarian who focuses his affection towards her cat. The action comes to a head when Joy is murdered by poisoned chocolate. Austen finds herself once again being thrown into the role of Sherlock. Can she sort through the list of suspects to unmask a killer? Will she be the who ends up behind bars... Or worse?
All in all, I perceived this installment to be much more enjoyable than "This Pen For Hire." It is suitable for teenagers, although there is still some suggestive language. My rating is five out of five stars. Go out and pick it up today! I look forward to escaping into other experiences with these characters. Until we meet again... I wish you and yours a joyous and prosperous 2014!
Happy Reading,
Carolyn

4 STARS

This is book 12 in the Jaine Austen Mystery but the first one I have read. I hope not the last. It is a fun wacky story. Her parents are full of laughs with the emails they send her. I like Jaine and her cat too. Though if someone offered me twentyfive thousand dollars for my cat I would say sold. My dogs would be a harder sell.

I liked the plot. It was fun to read. The body was found at a party for Dates of Joy clients and Jaine has sneaked into her bosses office to delete a email she had sent by mistake. So she is a suspect in the murder so she wants to find out who the real killer is to clear herself.

No one likes the person killed so their are plenty of suspects and motives. I was kept guessing and never got it right. Jaine is even a suspect herself.

Jaine is hired to make a advertising brochure for Dates of Joy. That is not all she ends up doing for them. She finds herself writing online bios to go along with headshots of models. She even ends up going on a date with quite a character himself.

But be careful you might find yourself wanting to eat chocolate while reading about it. I did.

The pacing was good and kept me reading till the end to find out who the killer was.

Based on this story I would read more of Jaine Austen Mysteries series.

I was given this ebook to read and in return asked to give honest review of it by Netgalley.

Title: Killing Cupid
Publisher: Kensington
4.5 Stars
Sexual Content: None
Language (Profanity/Slang) Content: None
Violent Content: Negligible

Jaine Austen, no relation, has gotten herself in quite the mess. A girl has to eat, though, and feed her adorable, loving cat (Prozac) Hearty Halibut Guts, as well as pay for her Fudge of the Month club.

To say that Joy, "premiere" matchmaker, was nowhere near what anyone would call joyful would be an understatement. Maybe that's why someone killed her. Maybe being a suspect is why Jaine thought she should hand the police a different suspect to go after.

This is a fun and lightly intriguing mystery series. Jaine is so much fun, even though at times I don't think she means to be. When I picture her I see in my mind a woman I used to know many years ago, but with a little more bounce and gusto. Lance, her friend and neighbor, is a hot mess. Dramatic, to say the least. Their love lives are somewhat lacking. Well, more than somewhat. What brings more pleasure to the story is the added dimension of her parent's drama via email. If you think about it, their troubles and frustrations loosely mirror Jaine's situation of love and jealousy.

You say you haven't read this series?? That's too bad...if you want a chuckle or three along with the drama that comes with Jaine and her co-stars, then start at the beginning of this series and be prepared to be entertained.

Enjoy,
CONNIE

Five stars means it was amazing. Well, I really, really liked it, so maybe 4.5. I had read several books in this series in the past including the most recent Halloween book. While I've enjoyed the books in the past, I didn't actively seek out new books, but would pick it up if I saw it or read about it on a blog.

For some reason, Killing Cupid just hit the spot this weekend. I loved the start: "There is was, waiting for me on my bedspread. An early Valentine's gift from my significant other...A hairball. How very thoughtful." I have 3 cats, so I can totally relate.

I didn't find it hilarious, but very, very few books actually make me laugh out loud. I think I came darn close a few time reading the his and hers POV emails from Jaine's parents. I enjoyed the other cat moments about Prozac and the descriptions about what she is doing or thinking.

The mystery portion (well, there was actually two, one that Jaine was involved with and a mini mystery with her parents)was enjoyable, I didn't know who the killer was until the end. Lance's bit with his new lover was entertaining and unexpected, though it would be nice if he weren't the stereotypical, fluttery gay best friend.

After reading Killing Cupid, I will have to be sure to get the next entry in the series ASAP.
