This is an alphabet book for grownups and, maybe, the serious child. While I don’t want to belittle the intelligence of a child of any age, I’m not certain this book will appeal to your average six to ten year old. How many kids that age want to learn Latin terms, anyway?
That aside, the illustrations in this book are meticulous and beautiful. Although they feature only the birds’s heads and necks, they do so with astonishing detail. Each alphabetized fowl is accompanied by a small text that provides the animal’s habitat, description of plumage, color, shape of the beast’s various attributes and feeding habits. It’s a lovely find and, even if children aren’t interested beyond the pictures, adults might want to savor this as an unusual coffee table book.
