Rate this book

Julie Caplin also writes contemporary romance as Jules Wake.

Julie Caplin is addicted to travel and good food. She’s on a constant hunt for the perfect gin and is obsessively picky about glasses, tonic and garnishes. Between regular gin tastings, she’s been writing her debut novel which is set in just one of the many cities she’s explored over the years.

Formerly a PR director, for many years she swanned around Europe taking top food and drink writers on press trips (junkets) sampling the gastronomic delights of various cities in Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Copenhagen and Switzerland. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. These trips have provided the inspiration and settings for the trilogy, The Little Cafe in Copenhagen, The Little Brooklyn Bakery and the The Little Paris Patisserie.

The Cosy Cottage in Ireland is the second book by the author that I have read, and it will probably be the last one.
I don’t think her books are particularly bad, I just don’t think they are for me.

This was a buddy read with Amanda. Last year (or maybe in 2020) we read Julie Caplin’s novel set in Croatia (my country) and although we didn’t really enjoy it, we knew we wanted to try her other work.

Just to give you an example how forgettable this story was, I will mention that while we were reading and discussing it, I surely favorited one before the other, and now I don’t even know which one I thought was better: the one set in Croatia or this one set in Ireland (but my bet is on this one).

The writing style was simple but still it wasn’t as easy to read as one would assume.
It felt like we were reading 500+ pages when the book has 373 pages (which is still too long in my opinion).

I didn’t like the guy who was the love interest (and whose name I have already forgot) nor his mother.
He was a sexist full of himself (ok, he had some sexist comments but I don’t think he was a man schwain or anything similar to that) and his mother was cold bitch who didn’t even realize it (and I am not sure the author did either).
If I was Hannah I would ask for money refund and run away.

As for the setting, it was good. Also, it was nice to read about the smaller town from that country.
Do I think I’ve learned something new about Ireland? Not really, but it was still a good escape and I appreciate it.

Julie Caplin ty romantické oddechovky prostě umí psát, i když jsou si tak podobné. Opravdu moc mě to bavilo. A samozřejmě okamžitě potřebuju letět do Irska, klasika. 😅❤️

4.5 - "Life at Killorgally is always and adventure..." Stars!

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by Julie Caplin, I first discovered her writing through the Romantic Escapes books, and I'm happy to see it's still going strong with The Cosy Cottage in Ireland being the eighth addition to the series.

"What happens in Dublin, stays in Dublin…"

As I have come to expect, the story is filled with a plethora of interesting and entertaining secondary characters, and Connor and Hannah’s story reminded me just why I like this authors writing so much. Opposites attract with these two, and I loved they way they worked through all of the obstacles in the way of potentially having a meaningful relationship together, as a reader you get to see them falling in love with each other, before either of them even realizes it themselves.

There was something about Ireland that made her want to act out of character…

Another winner from this author, I need to go back and read the previous books I’ve missed from the series now.

5☆ A Feel-good, Uplifting Romance!

Hannah has decided to take a very unexpected sabbatical from her high pressure job as a lawyer.
Completely out of character for her she decides to take a trip to Ireland and whilst there, enroll on a cookery course at the Killorgally cookery school for six weeks.
In all of her successes the one thing Hannah can't do is cook, and it's become a shameful secret.

But then she meets the devilishly handsome Conor, the chemistry between them is exciting, I mean it's completely out of character for Hannah to flirt with a stranger let alone kiss one so suddenly.
After all she won't be seeing the mysterious Conor again, as she heads off to the cooking course the next day.... or has fate got other ideas for the pair 😏

I loved every minute of this book!
Firstly the location, Ireland is on my bucket list so any time I get to read about Ireland I fall in love with it even more! And Caplin has created the perfect settings.
Secondly the Cooking! I adore baking and cooking....and this couldn't come at a better time now bake off is on. The food is absolutely scrumptious, but be warned don't read this on an empty tummy!!

The Cosy Cottage in Ireland is a Feel-good, Cosy Romance, that had witty humour, a brilliant cast of characters, and a cookery school I would love to visit! So snuggle up, and prepare to be whisked away to Ireland.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources and One More Chapter for my copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this sweet book set in Ireland at a cookery school. Another winner from Julie Caplin. I enjoyed one of her books that was set in Switzerland and loved it, so, I was thrilled when I was approved this one. I’ve only read two chapters of hers but will be looking out for more when I can. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Once again Caplin delivers a great read as this writer becomes my ‘go to’ author for cosy romances that feature beautiful settings and fantastic food! Heading to Ireland this time, we follow Hannah as she embarks on a cookery course, only to realise that her desserts go beyond a perfect soufflé.

Two of the most memorable things of my last Caplin read was the vivid setting and mouth-watering food. Readers will not be disappointed here as we firstly head to Dublin and then the idyllic Irish countryside. Personally, I have many warm memories of Dublin and I think Caplin’s description perfectly captures the atmosphere, energy and aesthetics of a beautiful city. Yet, only a small fraction of this book takes place here as Hannah moves to the Irish coast to learn how to cook. It reminded me a bit of 'Master Chef' and 'The Great British Bake Off' as we watch many scenes of Hannah’s attempts to improve her culinary skills. I truly sympathised with Hannah as she realises she is not as good as her classmates, but perseveres nonetheless.

Living on the working farm/cookery school, Hannah learns not just about the importance of food, but to take time out for herself. Hannah is able to admit that her life in Manchester isn’t really living: her apartment is just a place to sleep; she is fully dedicated to her job with little room for anything else; and she lacks the confidence to take risks and make a change. Therefore, the cookery course is symbolic of the transformation that Hannah undergoes, which she herself begins to recognise (calling it her ‘Ireland Hannah’ when she sees that difference emerging). This was a really enjoyable aspect of the story and one that I recognised from Caplin’s previous read, where characters go on a journey of re-discovery and evaluate what is most important to them.

Of course, one thing you expect from Caplin’s novels is a sweet romance. This happens with the dishy Conor and I loved imagining his Irish accent! The first scenes where Hannah and Conor meet are delightfully entertaining and, whilst it is easy to foresee how their relationship will develop, added to the cosy atmosphere of the book. As I said, this author is perfect for writing books that will make her readers feel all warm and content on the inside.

I really enjoyed the vast variety of characters in this book, particularly Hannah’s fellow cooking classmates. The people are all different in their own way and have such contrasting personalities. Jason was definitely my favourite chef, as I loved reading his rebellious behaviour and the money he had to donate to the swearing jar! He is a lovable rogue and I thought his final actions towards the end of the story simply proved how many good friends Hannah had made on the course.

For sure, my love for Ireland gave me a biased head-start with this book! It is a lovely read and I enjoyed relaxing to see Hannah’s cooking disasters and how she learned along the way. This is a sweet story that did not disappoint and I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

With thanks to One More Chapter, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I read this in one sitting… Immediately I was drawn in to the comfortable and warm setting of the first pages.

From the beginning I was intrigued to see where the story would go (although I could hazard a guess!)

The descriptions of Ireland at the beginning (during her journey) were wonderful and I could imagine I was right there in that car with her.

I loved reading about all of the characters that she meets, all so vivid and distinct. Getting to know them all was a pure delight.

I felt like I could really connect with Hannah and how she was feeling, the story was very relatable and nothing was too far a stretch for my poor imagination skills.

This book has made me want to drop everything and go to a cookery school in Ireland and that’s really saying something as I hate cooking.

The added jeopardy towards the end of the story really bought it all together for me and then that ending sewed the deal resulting in a huge 5/5 stars!

Tentokrát bolo prostredie jednoduché a pokojné, plné súladu s prírodou a s poctivým hospodárstvom. Zbožňujem, keď sa vďaka knihe dozviem niečo nové a tieto knihy toho ponúkajú dosť.

Nesmiem zabudnúť na hlavnú tému knihy, a tou je láska. Láska na prvý pohľad medzi Hannah a Connorom? Alebo to bol len nezáväzný flirt? Ich príbeh bolo ďalšie pohladenie na duši, ktoré mi robilo spoločnosť počať posledných upršaných dní.

Dúfam, že autorka s touto sériu ešte ani zďaleka nekončí, lebo tieto cestovateľské jednohubky som si za posledný rok poriadne obľúbila.

Za Domček v Írsku ďakujem vydavateľstvu Grada.

This is another truly wonderful read from the fantastic Julie Caplin.
This is the 8th book in the ‘Romantic Escapes’ series but they can easily be read as a standalone. Each book in the series focuses on a truly beautiful destination so choose where you fancy and enjoy! I’m just hoping that this isn’t the last as I can see this series going on forever!

So, I now want to go to Ireland! Julie’s writing is a breathe of fresh air, her descriptions of Ireland made it so easy for me to picture and she brings to life such relatable fun characters. I throughly enjoyed this from start to finish.

Workaholic lawyer Hannah wants to shake things up in her life and decides to book herself a place at a cookery school in Ireland. Barely settled she meets Conor, a handsome stranger although Conor doesn’t stay just a handsome stranger when she arrives for her first day! Expect lots of food (honestly I wanted to eat the whole time I was reading), a fun romance of ‘will they won’t they’ and the beginnings of some wonderful new friendships.

This book is full to the brim with such loveliness. It’s humorous, heartwarming, it’s a little saucy at times too. Overall this is escapism at its very best and I recommend you all to get this book and escape off to beautiful Ireland! Although don’t go taking Conor.. his all mine! Ha!

All there is left to say is ‘Julie.. where are you taking us next?!’

A big thank you to Rachels Random Resources for arranging the blog tour also to Netgalley and One More Chapter for the ARC which I received in exchange of an honest review.

How can I like a guy who tells a woman not to wear shorts in her cabin again, because her legs are indecent? Sexist or what?

What sort of business woman tells a frightened single female that she will have to share her rented cottage with another man because someone they know has been lurking outside trying to scare her. Yes it was a plot point but it was a fecking STUPID ONE!!! FFS!!! Who in their right minds would consider this either appropriate or sensible!!!

I've come to expect from a Julie Caplin book - that there will be a fabulous location, a gorgeous romance, and some delicious sounding food - and this has all that and more in spades.

First the location, a cooking school in County Kerry in Ireland. The working farm and cookery school that focuses on local produce, is so well described, that I felt i even knew some of the chickens that Hannah was feeding each day quite well. There is a real taste of Ireland and I feel like I was transported there in my armchair.

A gorgeous romance, well Conor is rather handsome and the first meeting between him and Hannah is rather memorable and definitely made me smile. And although I could see it was likely it wouldn't be quite the one night stand they both thought it might be, it really is a slow burner after that initial meeting, mainly due to various misunderstandings!

And food, well Hannah along with 5 other guests are on a 6 week intensive cookery course, they are all at various abilities, in Hannah's case well she is better at cooking than me, but that isn't saying much! I loved all the food descriptions and did feel hungry while reading.

Then there are the other guests on the course, you definitely need to keep an eye out for Fliss and Jason - I just loved their banter, was always entertaining to see them sniping at each other!

I actually loved all the guests, and also the whole of the Byrne family whose Cookery school they are all at.

This was a warm and cosy read, which I loved every second of. Yet another fantastic romantic escape from an exceptionally talented author.

Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Tyto příběhy mají společný jmenovatel a to: ÚTĚK – hlavní hrdinky utíkají, každá z nějakého jiného důvodu – některé utíkají z nefunkčních vztahů, jiné chtějí jen změnu.

Ten kdo má rád předchozí příběhy autorky, bude milovat i tenhle.

‘… she’d been too scared to make the jump. To step out of the comfort zone that had cocooned her all her life. Had she shut down possibilities in life?’

I have read and enjoyed some of Julie’s previous ‘Romantic Escapes’ (this one is #8) as they offer great escapism in this time of continued armchair travel. Each of these novels are stand-alones and I was excited for a trip to Ireland with her latest offering.

“.. we can’t help how we feel, but we can choose how we react” …
‘We choose how we react?’ ‘Yes. You can choose to be pissed off and angry at things, but if you do that the only person who’s upset is you, or you can choose to move on and ignore those things. Focus on the positives.’’

As I have come to expect from the previous ‘escapes’, Julie offers a story filled to the brim, this is certainly no one dimensional romance tale. Yes, there is the requisite romance but I just relished how Hannah was determined and had no idea how famous Connor was. The cast of characters and locales add a real depth to this story.

‘This was living. For so long she’d been existing, which had been OK but it had been a black and white sort of life. Whereas now she was living in technicolour with sunshine pouring into corners that she’d left unexplored for most of her life.’

On this occasion Julie takes us to Ireland. With a few days sightseeing around Dublin, it is off to County Kerry and she immerses you in all things Irish. What’s not to love? If you are a foodie you are sure to lick your lips with all the scrumptious food and baking on offer at this cookery school with the added dimension of learning and appreciating where one’s food comes from. Hannah was definitely a character I could relate to. She wanted to challenge her comfort zone but at the same time, relished time alone. And it's funny! This is the first book that has mentioned Bridgerton … Julie has her finger on the pulse!

‘I live in hope that the man of my dreams will come and sweep my off my feet, but sadly the only men in my dreams are building surveyors, tax inspectors, and local historians, none of whom are my idea of Regé-Jean Page.’ ‘Who?’ ‘Lord, girl. The Duke of Hastings. Have you not watched Bridgerton?’

The Cosy Cottage in Ireland is the perfect recipe for light escapism. I like how Julie’s heroines tend to be at the crossroads of both career and love life, attempting to be bold enough to take strong steps to live their best. So, wait no more ... grab a drink and snuggle up in your favourite reading spot to spend a few hours up in the Emerald Isle with this comfort read. If you are pining to escape somewhere ... anywhere ... be sure to grab one of Julie’s romantic escape books.

‘This felt right. Finding roots to nature. Her understanding of the world around her expanded and she realised just how limited she’d become in her life. Although she was successful in the usual ways–good job, good salary, owning a home–they were colourless in comparison to the life she was leading here. It was a moment of realisation: she wanted more in life.’

Well done Julie you have only gone and done it again your books are simply fantastic and so gripping and with this book I felt I was drawn in to the characters and the country to and the lovely countryside so well written and full of romance and making new friends and changing your life for the better. Worth far more than five stars and didn’t want it to end as so brilliant.
Hannah is a lawyer and needs to change something in her life and for a change she decides to book herself on to a 12 week cookery course with a famous cook family in Ireland. She heads over to Ireland and on the first night in a hotel she ends up sleeping with Connor not knowing who he is but she thinks it’s a one night stand. She wakes up and travels to the beautiful village where her cookery course is and she starts making new friends but when the son of the person running the course turns up it’s only Connor who she slept with and can she manage to resist him again or not. Can she learn to cook as well or not and will she get to help others along the way and will she head home or change her life forever.
An outstanding read.

I have mixed feelings about this one...

I thought it started well and kept a good pace throughout. I really liked the setting, and the characters. The writing style or dialogue felt a little off for me - it wasn't bad by any means, there were just some points where I didn't connect with the writing like I wanted to. What I really didn't like was the language and sexual situations. I don't mind innuendos or a closed door scene every once in a while in a book, but this was more brazen than I prefer and definitely cut back on my enjoyment of it.

Bottom line: This author is talented, but I don't think I'm the right audience for her books. Maybe I'll pick up another one some day!

Vždycky to dokáže ozvláštnit krásných prostředím.

Nebola som prenesená do Írska a svoj gauč som neopustila ani mentálne.
