While I really enjoyed the first book in this series, I was slightly disappointed with this sequel. Firstly, I disliked how it kept jumping character's viewpoints, from Scarlet to Ivy. As the first book was narrated entirely from Ivy's point of view I would have preferred it if it had remained the same for the sequel. Which brings me to the main reason why this book annoyed me a bit: I really dislike Scarlet! I thought she was a really selfish brat, and I found it difficult to sympathise with her. It also didn't really make sense to me that after the events of the first book that she would still behave like that. On a more positive note, I think that Ivy is a great character, as are some of the other girls in the school. The principal was quite terrifying and a good foil for the girls. It is an enjoyable book but not as good as the first, hopefully in the next book Scarlet will have learned to behave a bit better; being naughty and pulling pranks is fine, just don't be selfish about things.

Can I give it a chef’s kiss?😂❤️ This book gave me non-stop shocks throughout the book!!!!! And guess what???? There was an extra twist which didn’t have any realtion to this book’s plot💕

I loved the first book a bit more❤️ but I a dored this book too!!!!! At at first, I loved the evil headmaster, Mr.Bartholomew ….yes…it took me ages to learn the name 😂 Ok so I loved him at first but towards the end of the book after I learning about him in detail….uhhh….I changed my opinion of liking him😂

To be honest, I didn’t like Scarlet….not even A BIT!!! She was so cruel and mean to poor Ariadne😭 On the other hand, I loved Ivy as she is so sweet!!!❤️ I doubt Ivy and Scarlet are twins😂

Now, about the twists and turns!!!!!! There were uncountable twists and betraying❤️ I didn’t succeed in predicting any of them!!!!!!!!!!!! This book was puzzling!❤️

Though it is a chidren’s book, I am sure that even adults will relish it❤️This book was full of creepy dark secrets🥳 I relished reading every single bit of this book 💕

I loved it❤️
Go for it…

I have a lot of the same issues with this book that I had with the previous one. The atmosphere in the school was a bit better, but I felt like the mystery failed to betoo compelling and the writing style didn't really suit the story. It felt too simplistic for some of the darker things that happened, and that made or a strange reading experience.

I still enjoyed it, but it is not a series I want to continue at this point. I'm not invested enough in the main characters or the setting to really want to dive back into it.

At first Ivy is incredibly relieved and happy to find her twin Scarlett alive, especially when despite their pleas of horror, are both sent back to Rookwood Boarding School. At least she won’t be on her own this time. Being herself is now strange after pretending to be Scarlett for so long, but Ivy’s confidence is stronger because of it.
Scarlett however is often surprised at the change in her twin. Ivy had always gone along with her schemes and plans, but now she stands up for herself, not wanting to cause uneccessary trouble. The old headmistress, evil Miss Fox may have gone, but the ancient original principal has returned.
Mr Bartholomew makes Miss Fox look like the Sugar Plum Fairy. His threats and punishments are much tougher than they ever dreamed of, so Ivy is keen not to draw attention to themselves.
When clothes, food and other belongings begin to go missing, troublemaker Scarlett is under suspicion. Scarlett’s feud with prefect Penny continues, and Penny is determined to prove Scarlett is the culprit, making Scarlett determined to prove her innocence.
Defying the strict school rules, Scarlett begins to investigate. What are the whispers in the walls? Do ghosts roam the hallways at night? Is there someone in the basement? What is Mr Bartholomew hiding from his past?
With the help of Ivy’s friend Ariadne, Scarlett and Ivy discover a secret Mr Bartholomew has hidden for decades. Uncovering it has led them to a secret within their own family. Who was their real mother?
A fantastic series for anyone who loves a mystery, boarding school stories, or sleuthing it out with the characters as they unravel the clues they uncover. Scarlet is just as fiery and bolshy as ever, even after being locked up for months. Ivy has finally found her courage, and with her clever bestie Ariadne, they stumble on hidden rooms, a secret society, a terrible wrong in the past and clues about their mother. Loved it.

This was a most read book! It gripped me right from page one, untill the end! I loved this book, and I just can't wait to get my hands in the next one! I love the way Sophie Cleverly writes the book from the perspective of Scarlet and Ivy alternately so, you get to see what the are both thinking of the situations they find themselves in.

Whilst I really enjoyed book one in this series, I must say this one didn't catch me quite as much. I was a little shaken by the jump in perspective all the time as opposed to the whole story being told from one point of view - as is the case with book one all being told from Ivy's perspective.

Regardless, looking past that, as much as I liked the contrast of personalities between Scarlet and Ivy, I personally feel that Scarlet's personality was very strong - too strong. Whilst being built as a boisterous and strong-willed character I felt she often came across as just being plain bratty and spoilt.

Ivy, on the other hand, being the complete opposite of her sister, didn't come across as strong as she could have. Ivy is the kind and empathetic one in the siblingship and despite her having chapters of her own, dedicated from her point of view, I just felt as though she wasn't there some of the time; as though she had been cast to the side and a ghost of her was telling the story. Scarlet was a very dominating force in this book to me - and in a way that isn't a bad thing, as we had the entirety of the first book to see Ivy's character build and grow, Scarlet needed her space to do the same; however, I would like to have seen a bit more of an equal share between the two of them, character wise and story wise.

In terms of content, I think it was an interesting book and definitely continues on the mystery theme that was laid out in the build of book one, however, I can see why some parents have been a bit sceptical towards this particular book in the series in regards to the title. It happens to be a bit darker than what book one was, and you can see it building up to a darker plot. From a personal perspective, I was reading books similar to this in terms of content when I was in my 8-12 years, but I know there's going to be some parents out there who may be uncomfortable with the quantity of death that is spoken of in this one.

To clear up any concern for some parents - this book does not contain demons. This is a question I have been asked on several occasions at work in regards to this particular book in the series, and I'm happy to now have the answer to give to my customers.

This series is truly something special. To have one book be great is amazing, but to have it followed up by something equally as exciting is a rare treat. I will be truly sad when I am finished with this series. Brilliantly crafted books. Cannot recommend highly enough.

It was wonderful! I didn't like how it dragged on, and how it jumped perspectives, but other than that, it was great!

The sequel was an awesome continuation of the first. The mystery and risks were just as intense and high as the first book, if not more so. The addition of Scarlet to the story made less Ariadne, which was only made more tiresome because Scarlet made me want to slap her every couple of chapters. I fell more in love with Ivy this book as she came more into herself, discovering that being Ivy didn't mean being passive, and also that following the rules didn't mean you were somehow weaker or less capable than people who were rule-breakers.

I noticed that there were a lot of typos in this one, which made it a little difficult to read sometimes. They were scattered, but when they popped up, they were enough to make me stop and have to figure out why--as I was reading the book out loud--the sentence didn't make sense and I was tripping over it. Otherwise, the book was just as good as the first and I'm looking forward to reading the third.

This book was really good. The only reason why I am giving it 4 stars is because it drags on. This book would be good for younger people. There is another book that is coming out next year and I would pick it up. If a fourth book would be to come out, I would pick it up, but it would take me a while to actually pick it up and read it.

This book is so scrumptious. It's like 2.3 times better than the first book. It's like mystery after mystery. And once I started to read it I literally couldn't put it down, it's like a drug. Amazing, amazing. Just amazing.

This series so far is AMAZING! The books keep getting better and better! I loved this book especially because at first the twins weren't very close but then they started to understand each other. The ending was perfect! Overall I can't wait to start book 3!

I thought the second book of this series would not be able to keep up the interest as the first did but it turns out it does. New plots are introduced and a lot more happen at Rookwood.

This book is absolutely amazing (just like the first book)! I can't wait to read the third Scarlet and Ivy book. Victory isn't as hard for the characters to gain as in the first book.

A solid 5 star read🔥❤🌟 I really loved the book... An absolute page-turner 💯
At first I hesitated to buy the book, but the book on itself proved to me that it was worth it 👌🏻 Really intelligent employment of cliffhangers at the end of chapters... Eventhough the series is middle grade and I'm 15, I really want to complete this series and Sophie Cleverly never misses the mark... Although I guessed 1 or 2 plot twists, there was a special feeling when I read it from the pages... I felt like the series is getting better with each book and am looking forward to finishing the series soon...

This book is unbelievable. It is just full of twist and turns. The whole scarlet and ivy books is astonishing. There are no words to describe such a book. If there is someone who is searching for a good tween mystery then this book is for you. This book has no violence which will affect a tween. This is an amazing book. This book will make you feel as if you are in the position of the charecter and you are solving all the mystery

It was incredible! It was an amazing book and every night I couldn't wait to open the book and start reading. However it is so annoying as I have not found out about how scarlet and ivy's mum died twice! I hope to find out in the next book!

Though a little slower to pick up than its predecessor, THE WHISPERS IN THE WALLS delves deeper into the history of Rookwood School, and what this means for intrepid detective twins Scarlet and Ivy...

Scarlet and Ivy are back at Rookwood, but the past haunts them. Now their stringent headmaster is determined to stamp out any misdemeanours and all rule-breaking, but that won't stop them from hearing the whispers in the walls...

I think the main crux that made this book less enjoyable than the first, for me, was the inclusion of both Scarlet and Ivy's POV. Aside from seeming mostly unnecessary – they often were in the same place at the same time – Scarlet is introduced as brash, unyielding and often rude, I found it hard to connect with her like I had Ivy in THE LOST TWIN. There are touches of her growing as a person here and there, in-between stints of harrowed memories from her time at the asylum, but for me it wasn't enough. I'm not sure whether I liked the resolution of it, either, especially her initial opinion of Ariadne. In true Ariadne fashion, she just... puts up with Scarlet's obvious disdain for her, and it doesn't really come to head in a meaningful way.

I do like there was some attempt to cause a rift in the twins, in Ivy's distrust of Scarlet's innocence regarding a series of thefts. Again, though, and this was a product of the first book too, everything seemed so rushed and underdeveloped. There was so much that could've been touched upon in more depth, especially regarding Scarlet's time in the asylum, but all of it is left to dust. Which is a shame, especially since I'm rereading Harry Potter and noticing that there's most certainly scope to explore deeper themes in children's novels. This would've been the perfect time.

A fun book, but I closed it feeling like it could've been so much better.

WILL I READ ON? Yep! I'm pretty much into this series now.
