As the first born princess to the Court of Emerald, Auraelia has been prepared to take her place on the throne since she drew her first breath. But no amount of training could prepare her for what happens on her twenty-fifth birthday. When magic takes hold, and nature is at her fingertips, the grounding force in her life is someone she never saw coming. Even as the heir to the Court of Sapphire Isles, Daemon had little interest in finding someone to be his queen. That is, until he meets a masked beauty at a ball, and his world tilts off of its axis. Determined to find the woman who calls to his soul, he was unprepared for who was on the other end of that tether. But when treaties and politics mesh with secrets and lies, everything they love and hold dear will be put on the line. And it’s up to them to determine what is worth saving. One realm. Two hearts. Three secrets that lead to revenge.
I received an arc of this book and this is my honest review.
Of Storm and Emerald releases on KU 15/08. Do yourselves a favour and preorder/add it to your tbr. Idk man just do ittttt.
I would pull the stars from the night sky if it meant that I got to be with you.
As always, a special shout out for the world map and pronunciation guide right at the beginning of the book! I will always mention these when I see them.
On a real, I would like to lodge a formal complaint. This book had no right to mess with my feels the way that it did. It’s nearly 12am and for the past 2 nights I’ve had sod all sleep because I’ve been obsessed reading this book. Then to leave me on a cliffhanger like that?? Ma’am, we need to talk.
We have Aurelia, our FMC and Princess of Emerald, Daemon our MMC and Prince of Sapphire. Both MC’s are in their 20’s and they receive their magic at the age of 25. The whole romance side of this is fast past and so enrapturing, add the spice and just holy hell man. 🥵 I’m rooting for these two so hard.
My star, I would show you the world if you asked me to.
Just 🥺😩
Also, Piper deserves her own special mention. As the FMC’s best friend/ LiW, she’s hilarious. I genuinely love everything about her, she’s sassy, nosey and just an amazing character. I sat here smirking reading bits with their friendship, it’s just so wholesome. Her birthday was an absolute mood for me.
The world building is immaculate, descriptions paint such a beautiful imagery to follow and it really helps you just fall face first into the world. Add in some forbidden love, a plot twist you just don’t see coming and well, I devoured it as quickly as I could around adulting.
Honestly I really don’t want to say too much about this because I just want to watch as people read it and see their reactions. It’s an absolute 5 star for me and now I’m going to be twitching until I can read book 2. Maybe I’ll get some sleep now though 😂.
Thank you Jessica and in the best possible way I hate you so much right now.
I want to start off by saying there were some really cool concepts in this book! Like the Emerald territory is matriarchal and the females have a septum ring to show it. I also like that you don't get your magic until you're 25. You can channel your magic through the gemstones to enhance was really neat.
The FMC and MMC relationship was nice. I personally didn't get their connection and their slip up part way through the book was kinda meh. This book is spicey liked described and it was good! That being said I felt like there was almost too much spice; like I found myself wanting to skim over it just to get back to the main story.
For the plot I think there is something there but for me I had a hard time finding it. I felt like the majority of the book was split between filler and spice before getting to the big moment in the last 10% which sets up for book two nicely. I was just hoping for more plot and development.
Final thoughts are that I think a lot of of people can find enjoyment from this book! It's a fast read and there is some cool stuff going on. I am looking forward to the second book to see what's in store next!
-Thank you so much to the author for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review. I truly appreciate Jessica sending me her book, I know she worked so hard and is very passionate about the world she built. Unfortunately, I don’t think this book is for me.
-There is a lot I enjoy about this story, like using crystals to name the different courts. I enjoyed reading about older MCs, this is something I don’t come across very often in fantasy books. The smut is well written, and very hot!
-The things I didn’t mesh with really came down to the writing style. I found the pacing a little difficult to follow, sometimes the descriptions for the clothing or rooms were quite lengthy, and while the smut was really spicy, I actually could have done with less sex scenes. At a certain point those scenes became a distraction from the overall plot of Auraelia understanding her magical abilities.
-I think this book has the potential to be enjoyed by many people, but like I said, it just wasn’t for me.
I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest review.
This book had some interesting ideas and an intriguing premise! Auraelia is the heir to the throne in a matriarchal monarchy, and has prepared her entire life for the day that she will become the queen of her people in the Court of Emerald. She has known her entire life that, like the rest of her people, she will come into her magic when she turns 25 and will be named Heir Apparent once she comes of age. But on the day of her birthday, she meets someone who will shake up her entire world, Princess Daemon of the Court of the Sapphire Isles. With a treaty in place that forbids a marriage union between the two ruling courts, secrets, politics, and lies gather and these two must decide how to move forward. It has spice and political intrigue and two attractive MCs.
I was very excited for this book and for the premise that was put into place in the prologue, but I think it just fell flat, in my opinion. While there is a lot here that I'm sure others will adore, I spent most of the book being kind of confused. It felt like the majority of the plot was just filler and spice to fill in the gaps of not much happening. During the spice scenes, I felt like they were going to be FIRE and then barely felt any of what the female character was feeling. but also it was so quick to occur in the book with so little emotional buildup between them, that it just felt a little funny to me. I usually don't have an issue with spice early on in a book, but it was probably because of how I feel about what I'm going to say next. Some parts felt rushed, and other parts felt dragged out.
I will be honest, I was not a big fan of Daemon's. He seemed very overbearing and pushy, and almost like he was supposed to be a villain in an enemies to lovers romance, but then she was immediately into him. Even though they didn't know anything about each other, he WAS being pushy and overbearing. He also waxed poetic about her after not even having known her for a day and barely spending any time in her company, which was just weird. Like you can't know that someone is beautiful and incredible and smart and fierce and strong and going to make a wonderful queen when you have barely spent any time together. There was also the issue of his voice during his POVs sounding the exact same as hers and the confusion that sometimes caused while reading. Then we came to Rae, who felt a bit off from what I was able to glean from her character. She was hesitant to be heir and rebellious, and she had self-doubt and was relatable in that way. She is supposed to be witty and smart, but for her coronation made absolutely zero sense, like go ahead and show me how little respect you have for the position and your people that you are dressing that way—I get you want to tempt the man, but come on.
The treaty in the prologue made me very excited to read this book because I was looking forward to watching two people who knew they couldn't be together slow fall for each other. Whether it was instant attraction or a slow burn enemies to lover's, I didn't care, but I was ready for that slow burn, yearning, trying to stay away from each other and not even tempt it, maybe watching each other from afar, and then not being able to stay away, and slowly falling for each other. Also, I was expecting pushback from everyone around them when they did start having feelings for each other, but everyone seemed to WANT them together, which was just weird. It made me question why the treaty was even mentioned in the prologue if But I couldn't stop thinking, "why?" Why, even if sleeping together doesn't necessarily mean you will fall in love and get married, would you even TEMPT the possibility when there is a treaty in place that forbids it? If it ended badly, which is a possibility because as far as they know, it would HAVE TO end. But then, on their second meeting, I REPEAT SECOND MEETING,and that confused me even more. Did they not know about the treaty? That was the only thing that could possibly make sense for why they were acting the way they were because, otherwise, everyone would be like, "no, don't do that." But then that brought up the thought of stakes and how there would be no stakes if no one knew about the treaty because no one would care that it was broken and it wasn't bound by magic...unless someone's magic was accidentally being used while it was drafted and breaking the treaty would cause that magic to go into effect. Either that or no one cares about the treaty because they had been at peace for so long. But either way, it needed to be set up in the beginning in order for the reader to not be questioning these things about WHY these two are doing what they are doing and no one is questioning it.
Besides that, I will say that it had some phrasing issues and punctuation errors that I noticed while reading, as well as the internal dialogue issues of not having a ton of emotion during important scenes. I really wanted to love this book, but I'm sure a lot of the things that I found issue with others won't have a problem with and will still enjoy it!
Rating: 3⭐️ while I ponder a bit more over what I have read. I'm going to come back in a few days and edit/add more to this review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
{Of Storms and Emerald} is a MUST read for romantasy readers!
This story was so beautifully written, I couldn't put it down. The characters, the spice, and the story that built had me wanting more.
The story follows our FMC, Auraelia {Heir Apparent to Court of Emerald} who is turning 25 and coming into her magic. During her 25th birthday masquerade party, she is swept away by a mysterious man. We later meet who that mystery man is- Daemon {Prince of the Court of Sapphire Isles}. This man is TOP NOTCH book boyfriend material… SHADOW DADDY!!
💎 sassy, witty banter 💎 spiiiiice 😮💨 💎 forbidden love 💎 matriarchal system 💎 star-crossed lovers 💎 forbidden romance
10/10 recommend! Do yourself a favor and enter Ixora!
I love the concept of this book and THANK YOU Jessica for making the characters in their mid-twenties and not 17/18. Auraelia is a wonderful fmc. She’s sassy, loyal, strong, smart, and sexy! I love how she knows what she wants and doesnt mind telling anyone and everyone who will listen how she feels about something. Daemon is such a good counterpart. He is strong, stubborn, loyal, sexy, and a SHADOW DADDY 🥵. Xander is such a loyal and protective big brother and I’m absolutely here for it. Piper is the bestfriend everyone wishes they had and I love her.
The world that Jessica built in this book is beautiful and I imagine it so vividly. I imagine the brightly colored flowers, the wild ocean, the beautiful skies, and the beautiful homes that frame the land.
Overall, I gave this book 5 ⭐️ because it’s 1:30 am and i couldnt put it down once i started reading it. I’d say it has 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 because it was SPICY, but still had a good story line to it.
Why would you do this to me, Jessica?!?! First I dove in... Then I fell in love... Eventually, my heart broke... And now I am sitting here at the end of this book, screaming obscenities at my Kindle because I have to wait so long for the next one!!!
This book had everything you could want! Fantasy, a unique magical system, SMUTTY SMUT SMUT, an amazing supporting best friend, and of course the dark, sexy new book boyfriend of your dreams. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was I needed more build-up with the mystery that is happening and wish there were a few more hints about it without it being too obvious.
I highly recommend jumping into this series! I was telling everyone halfway through they should read it but once I hit the last 10%, it became an absolute must!!
Thank you for the opportunity to be an ARC reader! I look forward to many more!
Jessica’s world building skills are next level and I got completely lost in the world of Ixora. In its beauty, in its political history and in the forbidden relationship between Daemon and Auraelia.
These two have completely stolen my heart and I’m now obsessed with them. Daemon is also my new favourite shadow daddy 😍🔥
I don’t want to give too much away but the story centres around these two young heirs and how they have to navigate their budding romance when the whole world is against them. There is also political tension growing behind the scenes that culminates into an epic cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more.
And boy do I want more. Oh and there is also spice 🌶️ and I mean good spice 😉🔥
This is Jessica’s debut novel and the first in Gems of Ixora series and its AMAZING.
If you’re a fan of Emma Hamm, Tessonja Odette and Eli’s Kova, then you NEED to read this!!!!
This book started out hot (and SPICY) right from the start and burned like a slow stoked fire. Shadow daddy stamina is a thing of beauty 🥵 On a literary note, the imagery was iconic, with the garden being my absolute favorite scene. IYKYK.
"...I would pull the stars from the sky if it meant that I got to be with you.” - Daemon
💚📚🩵🖤 I swooned too many times in this book!
4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶🥵
This book starts off jumping right into the spark between Auraelia and Daemon. I loved the intra connection that had me wanting more! BUT they are the heirs to the crown in their courts, Emerald & Sapphire. We learn that there is a treaty for peace written and signed by their parents that forbids heirs to marry and intertwine.
Auraelia or Rae is our Badass Sassy FMC! I loved getting inside her head, and her LIW/ BFF Piper has to be one of my favorite characters in the whole book...(might've even liked her more the Rae...shhh!) Piper is the perfect supporting side character, that kinda hope you hear her story too!
Then we have out Shadow Daddy, Daemon is the Crown Prince of the Court of Sapphire Isles. I LIVED for the steamy scenes in his POV! 🖤🥵 His dirty talk... Yes! The spice and connection between Rae & Daemon is *chef's kiss*, and I loved the banter and conversions between them both.
This book was a great read, and i would recommend it to all of my fantasy romance lovers! This has Starcrossed lovers, spice, witty banter, political conflict, amazing lovableside characters, and beautiful world building. PLUS...the ending?! I was so shocked. I did not see any of that coming! THE BETRAYAL AND HEATBREAK....WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN BOOK TWO!?
I give this book 4 1/2⭐️ I really enjoyed this book LOVE the main characters it’s fast paced lots of spice and swooning moments and the last couple chapters are mouth dropping
Firstly we have a beautiful map which always helps to set the scene, and a very handy pronunciation guide. I wish more books (especially those that fall into the fantasy genre!) would do this.
The prologue starts with a treaty being created to ensure that there is equal rule in the Kingdom of Ixora by dividing power amongst the Isles and declaring that whilst the Isles must rule together no two reigning monarchs may be romantically involved. I think we know then what is going to happen! This definitely gives me star-crossed, Romeo and Juliet vibes.
Princess Auraelia from The Court of Emerald and Prince Daemon from The Court of Sapphire meet one night and form an instant connection before becoming aware of each others true identity.
What follows is a series of spicy encounters as they get to know each other better - both carnally and on a much deeper level. It’s worth mentioning that the main characters are all 25+ which is refreshing especially in this genre. Trust me when I say that if you’re not into spicy books then this is not the one for you because it hits early and it doesn’t stop! It is exquisitely written and it is not all that there is to their relationship but it there is definitely no holding back.
I heard the term “gentle fantasy” for the first time the other day and I’d say that’s a great way of describing this book. The world building is clear yet not taking up pages and pages with lengthy descriptions, it unfolds naturally along the way. As the characters discover more about each others Courts and their own magic so do we. I have to say that I particularly fell in love with the description of the Sapphire Isles. There are some really clever twists of magic - and what I particularly love is that none of it is difficult to understand. This book feels like it takes you on a journey through the senses with lots of descriptions of how things smell and taste, and lots of beautiful colour imagery.
In terms of plot most of it really is exploring the buildup of the connection and the romance between the main characters. I really loved the letters that they wrote to each other, I’m a sucker for things like that! There was some frustrating miscommunication in the middle but thankfully it was quickly resolved. I did expect more to be made of the treaty - although the main characters discuss it later on and admit that it could be a barrier for them, nobody else seems particularly concerned by it? Not even their parents! There’s hints along the way of trouble to come but when it finally arrived it was not at all what I was expecting. The ending took my breath away and I really wish I had a Time Machine so I could jump into next year and read Book 2!
I adored Auraelia’s best friend Piper. She’s everything you’d want in a best friend and deserves a special shout-out! These FMC’s are sassy, sharp witted and can hold their own in battle to boot! I wouldn’t want to mess with them! There’s lots of humour along the way too.
The narrative style (third person) felt a little clunky at times, especially as it switched between character led chapters. Whilst it may appear that this book has several elements that I wouldn’t usually enjoy - there’s no sign of a slow burn here and as mentioned previously there’s also some miscommunication - it speaks volumes for me that in spite of these elements I absolutely loved this book. However those are the reasons why it didn’t quite make it to five stars for me.
Overall a fantastic read and I can’t wait for the next instalment. I was gifted an ARC but was under no obligation to post a review. As always my thoughts are my own and honest opinions.
"Of Storm and Emerald" offers a unique blend of elements that weave a unique story, but it left me with mixed feelings about the overall experience. The narrative was captivating, with a world of intriguing concepts, characters and kingdoms that drew me in. However, there was a certain imbalance that hindered my complete engagement with the book.
This novel is marketed as a spicy read, and in that aspect, it certainly lives up to its promise. The steamy scenes were meticulously written, showcasing the author's skill. However, it felt like these moments occasionally overshadowed the broader plot. The transition from one spicy encounter to the next, often spanning chapters, occasionally left me yearning for more plot-driven content to maintain a consistent level of engagement.
Despite this, the forbidden romance at the heart of the story provided a compelling dynamic reminiscent of star-crossed lovers. The protagonists, Auraelia and Daemon, stood out with their growth and intricate personalities. The magic system, which manifests at the age of 25, added an original touch, requiring characters to mature before harnessing their abilities.
While the main characters were well-developed, I found myself wishing for more focus on world-building and secondary characters. Piper, in particular, was a standout with her vibrant presence, and her friendship with Auraelia enriched the depth of the plot. Exploring their relationships and backgrounds further could have enriched the attachment to the story.
The book's conclusion delivered an unexpected twist, evoking both shock and emotion. However, I couldn't help but feel that the central conflict could have been introduced earlier to allow for a more balanced pacing and development.
In summary, "Of Storm and Emerald" offers a mix of spice and story that holds the potential to captivate readers. While the steamy scenes were well-executed, a greater emphasis on world-building, secondary characters, and narrative progression could have provided a more immersive and well-rounded reading experience. The story's unique concepts and emotional depth leave me curious about the sequel's direction and whether the balance between spice and plot will be refined. With that being said, I think this debut novel will find a welcoming home in the Dark Spicy Romantasy community.
“I would pull the stars out of the night sky if it meant that I could be with you.”
Where to start!? This was a great read! The story was fascinating and definitely entertaining. There were many intriguing concepts, and we are definitely taken on quite the rollercoaster. In a kingdom divided by ruling leaders, we have heirs from separate courts who meet in disguise at a mascaraed. Sparks fly obviously. In true Romeo and Juliet style, these two are clearly fated to be, alas, because of who they are, they are forbidden. Stuff certainly gets complicated fast, but how far are you willing to go to be with your soulmate?
One of the things I especially loved about this book was the unique magic system. Something new, powers manifest at the age of 25. I like that our characters weren’t born or gifted their powers. They had to grow into their own person first, without magic.
What really made this story though was the characters. I LOVED Daemon (aka shadow daddy). He is seriously so perfect. Our boy falls HARD. And though he overthinks, which was actually quite endearing, one thing is for sure, he is ✨obsessed✨ with our girl. Auraelia is such a sweet soul, smart, strong, a total BA. Unfortunately I can’t say I really agreed with her actions there at the end, but, I really feel for her struggles. This book is spiiiiicy BUT the intimacy truly surpassed the physical level, they had a great emotional connection as well. I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop. Banter was gold. And the commentary was hilarious between all the characters.
I also really enjoyed our side characters, Piper especially. The friendship between Rae and Piper was fantastic and something I always enjoy in heavy romance stories. Piper clearly has her own story going on in the background so I definitely wonder if we’ll be getting some more POV in future books!
Also, the ending. Like what?! I was seriously so shocked. The heartbreak, ugh. I did not see any of that coming. With that being said, I do wish we were maybe introduced to this “main” conflict a little earlier in the story. Though, I definitely get the wow power this type of ending has. I wish we had gotten Daemon’s POV, or his epilogue, after all that went down. Everything kind of just exploded there at the end and I definitely NEED the next book to see how this all plays out! It’s a hair-puller of an ending for sure!
I definitely recommend this book to all my romantasy readers out there. I foresee this book doing very well in this community! 🖤
Roses:🌹 Love that we get a pronunciation page. Lots of spice in this book. The frequency of spice was very often which if you are saying it’s a spicy book it should have good amount of scenes dedicated to that. I’ve read some books recently that label themselves spicy but they only have one or two actual spicy scenes and then that’s it. In this you get actually quite a few which paints a really good detailed picture of just how much lust the characters have for each other. The friendship bonds between Piper and Rae are really great. You see a lot of their love for each other, helping them make decisions that better the story but also how in the future they can grow from each other hopefully. Xander is also a really great character as the very protective brother. He also looks out for Piper and it’s a really cute connection that builds towards the end between those two, and I hope it continues to get played out and then the next coming books.
Thorns 🔻 I wasn’t completely sold on Rae having feelings for Daemon. I hundred percent believe Daemon’s feelings for Rae but not vice versa. She didn’t come off as emotionally aware, and or as confident with herself as Daemon and I think that really kind of hindered my understanding of her feelings and choices as a reader. I also thought that there wasn’t many scenes between the two where the reader got to witness a genuine deep conversation. I thought the letters they were writing to each other would be the gateway into their relationship but again they kind of just turned sexual and weren’t used as a pillar to show reader, and/or tell the reader, how strong their relationship really was becoming. Im just not convinced that it is a strong relationship and is based on love rather than sex. The frequency of the spicy scenes out weights the intimate conversations that readers actually get to experience. I’m a reader that needs more plot. Also not a fan with the third act break up. I thought here it was kinda misplaced. If Rae was madly in love with him as much as she is supposed to, I feel she would take his word as what it is and still keep Daemon on her side and not shut him out.
I’m hoping book 2 can advance the story in a way were the choices made in book 1 really make sense.
Definitely still worth the read and I’d recommend it to those looking for a new story to dive into!☺️
"My star, I would show you the world if you asked me to."
"I would pull the stars from the night sky if it meant that I got to be with you."
This book has it all, fantasy, unique magical system, alot of smexy smut 🥵, really good supportive friends, a badass FMC & sexy as sin MMC.
Our FMC Auraelia has known since birth that she would take the throne being the first born princess to the emerald court. She has been training and preparing since the day she was born, and on her 25th birthday she receives her powers bringing nature to her fingertips. At her masquerade ball she is thrown off her by Daemon. Only to learn that treaties mixed with secrets will put everything that's dear to them on the line and lead down the path to revenge.
The chemistry between our lovers, FMC Auraelia and MMC Daemon, was amazing. Us as readers can really see how much they care about each other as the story develops.
Although living in different areas, Auraelia and Daemon continue to build upon their relationship through letters which were simultaneously heartfelt and spicy 🔥🥵.
In addition to our amazing FMC, MMC characters, the side characters were just as interesting. Piper and Aiden are the perfect friends to Auraelia and Daemon. Piper is brilliant she's sassy and nosey 🤣 they both are just amazing friends. I would like to hear more about piper & Aiden ☺️
Jessica took me on a rollercoaster of emotions let me tell you, I fell in list, got angry, fell in love, and got my heart broken all at the same time. What have you done to me 🤣 I can't wait to see what's next. I highly recommend this story.
"Everyone is a villain in someone's story. I will do what I must to keep my people safe. If that makes me the villain, then so be it."
Of Storm and Emerald had me laughing, at the edge of my seat, intrigued, and heartbroken all in one book.
Auraelia and Daemon are, respectively, the heirs to the crown in their courts with a treaty for peace and cooperation that forbids reigning families to ever intertwine, unfortunately the heart doesn't care about an agreement. Auraelia (Rae) is the Crowned Princess of the Court of Emerald and has a sassy, witty personality. Daemon is the Crown Prince of the Court of Sapphire Isles and has a mysterious, confident personality. In this world, you do not come into your magic until age 25, and some of the courts rule by the matriarch line. The spice and connection between the two MCs are phenomenal, and I loved the banter and conversions between them both. Daemon is total book boyfriend material. Don't get me started about that mouth on him.. oh my. I loved the supporting characters just as much. Xander is the protective brother, and Piper is the humorous but supportive best friend to Rae. I love the relationship Rae and Piper have throughout the story.
I love many concepts in this novel, including the magic, the courts, and the succession system. At times, I was waiting for the tension/plot twist/climax to arrive and was looking for it intermittently in scenes. The last 1/3 of the book leaves me thinking the 2nd book will be even better with the turmoil and drama to come. The ending is killing me, leaving me with the need to get my hands on book 2. Overall, I enjoyed this story and its characters. It was worth the read. I can't wait to see how the story grows and progresses in book 2.
Overview: the country of Ixora is broken up into various courts - Pearl, Opal, Topaz Garnet, Emerald and Sapphire - and are ruled by the Emerald and Sapphire court, to keep balance to the Kingdom. Being respective patriarchal and matriarchal Courts, the rulers of the Sapphire and Emerald Courts are sworn by treaty to never intertwine the two houses in blessed matrimony. Five hundred years later, this becomes an issue on Princess Auraelia's 25th birthday and she comes face to face with Heir Apparent to the Sapphire Court, Prince Daemon. Oh, and there is magic.
Thoughts: this book is, technically, a political romance. However, you really need to get settled into the book before you get to the political aspect because the first half is essentially just smut. Like, near the point of 'porn with some plot'. I'm all for smut with fantasy, but I tend to enjoy it more when it is part of the plot, rather than the plot being a part of the smut (if that makes sense).
However, it was the second half of the book that redeemed this for me, once the characters were established and the political situation became clearer (or did it, because oh boy that was a plot twist at the end).
Auraelia is a good sassy FMC who's got a lot of spunk to her, and while it does seem like a bit of an odd, instantaneous match, Daemon is a good counter-balance, being a little more level-headed but stubborn (however, the man does tend to think a lot more with his pants than with his actual head...). But who can go past 'my star'.
Thank you Jessica for the ARC copy and can't wait to see what happens next.
REVIEW: Of Storm and Emerald by @jessicahoffa.author
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This is a Romantasy book with 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Please check trigger warnings before reading.
So I have a friend who has a friend (Jessica) that wrote this book. So being supportive and drawn in by the synopsis, I decided to read it.
I’m so glad I did! This book is fantastic. The writing is really well done. Honestly. The use of imagery is so great that you can really picture the characters and scenery. It felt like you were there seeing it for yourself.
The FMC, Auraelia, is a curvy, badass, head strong, and relatable. She’s a Princess in the line for the throne who falls in love along the way. But there come complications and difficult decisions to be made.
The MMC, Daemon, is witty, charming, sexy as Hell…just honestly the perfect Shadow Daddy. I’ve added him to my list of book boyfriends.
The two of them are a great pair. The chemistry is amazing. So many scenes with them had me smiling and kicking my legs like a school girl. But it def has some 🌶️🌶️🌶️ too that are toe curling!
I HAVE to mention Piper, Auraelia’s best friend. She is honestly one of my favorite parts of the book. She’s such a great friend but also hilarious. The banter between the two of these friends is so funny.
Anyone who loves fantasy, romance, spicey love scenes, shadow daddies, and strong FMC should definitely check this book out.
I am definitely looking forward to book two because that ending…all I can say his Jessica needs to hurry up with releasing the next book in the series.
talented. brilliant. incredible. amazing. show stopping. spectacular. never the same. totally unique. completely not ever been done before. those are the only words i can describe this book. wonderful. exceptional. phenomenal—no. FUCKING phenomenal. IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN.
jessica hoffa has knocked my socks off with her debut fantasy novel! it’s a captivating read that will surely leave fellow readers impressed. the intricate details of the world building are beyond words. reading this book made me laugh, kick my feet like a school girl with her first crush, and -ahem- cross my legs from all the coochie butterflies going on 🥵🦋
hoffa gives us the spice early, which is wonderful because it’s consistent with the plot. speaking of the spice, it’s EXCEPTIONALLY WRITTEN! when reading smut driven romance i sometimes find myself skimming the spice if it’s too long or just entirely too cringey, i’m here to tell you that this books spicy scenes are neither cringey or too long. in fact i was SAD a specific bath scene was over 🥲
daemon is a TOTAL simp and consent king for auraelia -as he should she’s a goddess- and the way he calls her his star ?!? it’s bothe heartwarming and emotional. overall, i enjoyed reading about auraelia learning and growing WITH her powers instead of having her powers stunt her. im looking forward to see how she grows stronger with the series 🥰
ps i have jousted for daemons honor and that makes me better suited for him than auraelia
Over 500 years ago, the land of Ixora agreed on a dual monarchy to keep checks and balances. The king would come from the patriarchal Sapphire society and the queen from the matriarchal Emerald kingdom. To ensure balance of power, a rule was implemented that prohibited marriage between the two courts.
The royals from the Court of Emeralds gain their magic on their 25th birthday. It is Princess Auraelia's birthday and her mother is throwing her a masquerade ball to celebrate. And then she sees the most handsome man. They are drawn together. He tells her his name is Daemon, so she immediately knows he is the Prince of the Sapphire Court, but the rules don't say they can't have fun - just not marry. And fun is had....
"I would pull the stars out of the night sky if it meant that I could be with you."
Daemon is absolutely mesmerized by the gorgeous Auraelia, whom he refers to as his star. His shadow magic makes it easy for them to slip away while he is visiting. He proposes they maintain some sort of connection when he returns home... and the banter moves from word to page...
Upon his return home, he notices his father begins to act strangely, and Auraelia notices similar behavior in her mother. What are they hiding?
The book is part of a duet and ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to finding out how this story progresses!
I think Auriela was a brilliant character and I loved the inclusion of her being written as a regular person; it's not often that books include women with curves, body hair or talk about periods, I think it did it in a way that helps readers connect to her and see her in themselves and the way her love interest found her normalcy beautiful. I also liked the way they don't like their titles informally and they interact with their cities. I also loved the inclusion of the different gemstones and the details of each of the courts, the clothing and all the little details. The story throughout is very interesting like the way the treaty was designed in the first place, as well as hints of magic and love and souls. I cannot wait to see where some storylines lead as they learn more about the past and the challenges that they are starting to face. The ways that magic is introduced and they learn about their powers is amazing and the different dynamics of their society. I liked Kalmera and the ride through all of daemons favourite places and the letters as it is a good way to show more developments of relationship while also having lots of intimate scenes with it not overpowering the plot as they also communicated, i loved the way deamon talks about his feelings and is caring. This was a great start to the book series as it tells its own story while leading you in to know all the details before the next one.
I wanted to DNF it about 20% through, but I wanted to finish it anyway. I'm not sure if I'll read the second one just yet.
There really wasn't much substance to the storyline, and it just seemed all of its focus was just on the smut. Nothing really happened until the last few chapters. All I really recall of this book was being in a bedroom, taking a bath, and going to balls 😅 The writing style, in general, was just hard to follow, and there were way too many consecutively descriptive words when trying to paint a picture of something. It just seemed like word vomit and was overkill sometimes.
The romance seemed so rushed, and there was no build-up. I know there was this instant unknown connection, so I'm sure they're fated, but it still was so fast. I guess I'm just more of a slow burn kinda reader. Also it was a little cheesy in some aspects in the conversations.
Lastly, I could not get past the way they spoke. It's a fantasy land kingdom with kingdoms and ships and magic, and all of the conversations were so immature and so frat like, I guess is how to say it? For example, the sentence "Damn D you got it bad" seemed so out of place for this type of book. It was repeated several times throughout the book. It's something I would expect from a dark romance book set in college or something. Idk it just put me off.
It's not a completely terrible book, so I do hope people enjoy it! Unfortunately, it wasn't me 🫤

“My star, I would show you the world if you asked me to.”
Of Storm and Emerald by Jessica Hoffa is beautifully detailed and absolutely captivating. From the badass/sassy characters to the incredible plot, the first installment of the Gems of Ixora series was difficult to put down.
The chemistry between our star-crossed lovers, Auraelia and Daemon, was amazing. Readers can really see how much they care about each other as the story develops. Although living in different areas, Auraelia and Daemon continue to build upon their relationship through letters (which were simultaneously heartfelt and spicy). The spice in this book was definitely spicing.
In addition to the amazing main characters, the side characters were just as interesting. Piper and Aiden are the perfect friends to Auraelia and Daemon. Although this is a fantasy book, I felt that the characters were extremely relatable (especially when they were with their friends).
The world was one of my favorite aspects of the book. I adore the idea of a matriarchal society, which is something I haven’t really seen in other books I’ve read. The plot twists and secrets constantly kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting to know more.
I absolutely cannot wait for Book 2! I need to know what happens to Auraelia, Daemon, and the rest of the characters after that outstanding twist!
This is the first book in the Gems of Ixora duology, a romantasy series about a young woman coming into her powers and the man she falls for. Tropes include shadow daddy, secrets, star crossed lovers, fast burn and court intrigue. This book does include adult spicy content so please check content warnings.
The Lovely: I loved the concept of the world and the magic system. Both are structured around gems and individuals don’t come into their power until they turn 25. In addition, some of the courts are matriarchal, which I always love to see. I also really enjoyed the main characters and their relationship, which this book really focused on (compared to the FMC’s magic or the mystery around the Garnet Court). This is quite a spicy fast burn, which was a fun switch up from slow burn.
The Mundane: As a whole the book is pretty fast paced, save for some of the descriptions of things and places. Given the pacing of the dialogue and action scenes, the long descriptions were jarring to the pace.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 3/5 Flames
Recommendation: I loved this book as a romantic story in a fantasy world. The ending gutted me - I get the “why” but dang - that hurt! This was a fun read that wasn’t too dark or serious. I see so many opportunities for the next book of the duology, which releases August 13.
Holy MOLY, Mrs. Hoffa! That's one way to splash into the fantasy romance pool. 4.5 ⭐️ 4🌶 read for me. If you're looking for exquisitely written world building, addicting friendships, and a forbidden (very) spicy romance that will have your mouth popping open and feet kicking, Of Storm and Emerald is your jam! Daemon (AKA Shadow Daddy) is what dreams are made of 🥵 🔥, and Aurelia is the spunky FMC I never knew I needed in my life. The spice comes out strong (I think in CH 3?!) with a 🦆 first, friends later vibe, and I was not mad about it. At all. It gets spicier from there, but doesn't overshadow the plot. Vivid imagery and a beautiful magic building system paint a mind movie that lingers long after you close that cliffhanger and hock your book/device at the wall. 😂 I had the pleasure of beta reading OSAE a few months ago, and when I tell you these characters STAY WITH YOU, I'm not exaggerating. This final draft is a powerful debut, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
Can't wait to watch A&D's relationship develop and grow in the next book as they conquer the storm we're left facing.
Of Storm and Emerald by Jessica A Hoffa is book one in the Gems of Ixora Series. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and what a journey it was. I was originally drawn in by the cover, I mean how pretty! But then when I read the book description it immediately captured my attention. I read this entire book in one night without really meaning to… I started before bed and the next thing I knew birds were chirping away outside. This had such an interesting concept that you can’t use magic until you're twenty-five. I also really like that the characters were in their twenties. But it was really cool that you could enhance the magic through gemstones. I thought that was such an intriguing idea. The worldbuilding was great and I could clearly picture what was written as I was reading. I was a fan of the characters, Auraelia and Daemon had my attention. I will say I hope we get more development between the two in the next book. Don’t get me wrong, I love them but I just want a bit more for them. The ending really picks up the intensity but that cliffhanger! Why?!? I’m eagerly awaiting book two in this series. Overall great read!
This was a good book ! The writing was so good and very descriptive. I especially liked the world building.
Forbidden romance - a very good trope ! There were a lot of reminders of their forbidden romance throughout the book and the ending reallyyy made that apparent !
The pronunciation guide and map at the start were such a lovely thing to include. Including those show that the author cares about their readers experience which is so niceee !
I like that their powers don’t come in until they are 25 ! A very relatable age and also a more mature age for them to fully be able to accept and control their powers !
This book was spicy ! At some points I felt the plot lacked as the spice took over. There were moments that could’ve been shortened as I felt myself wanting to skip through some scenes. This also meant I didn’t really connect with the love interests, I didn’t believe in their love. I absolutely loved the best friends relationship though, that was lovely.
This is a good book & I do recommend, I just didn’t connect with it as much as I’d liked. Jessica’s writing is immaculate!
Of Storm and Emerald (Gems of Ixora) by Jessica A Hoffa
Well talk about a total unexpecting cliffhanger. One of the reasons why I love fantasy romance if because I love the world building, how the authors can just transport you to this world that they built and this is just absolutely amazing. For some reason at the beginning of the book I was not fully engaged but I think that was because I was in the precipice of a reading slump but once we got to the masquerade ball and Auraelia and Daemon my ear perked up.
This book was the start of the journey of what's ahead. We got see who they are and what it means to be in their position and the who they will become once they step into their respective roles as leaders BUT there are secrets that have been kept from them and as their relationship and feelings progress the secrets that surround them will only end up destroying them.
At about 30% towards the end I kept reading but I didn't want it to end! Mrs. Jessica Hoffa you did an amazing job. You kept me at the edge of my seat and my nails hate me right now from all the nail biting lol. I can't wait to see what's next.
Everything about this book is just amazing- a great debut novel for Jessica Hoffa! 👏
This book has everything you could want in a fantasy novel! Let’s start with the beginning- A GORGEOUS cover, a beautiful map, and a pronunciation guide. I hate guessing how to pronounce names and places, so we were already starting off strong here. Adult main characters, banter (which is always my favorite), a sassy & strong FMC, shadow daddy/sexy as hell MMC, smut coming in strong but doesn’t take away from the story, a best friend everyone wants who keeps you laughing, and a vivid, unique magical world!
I absolutely devoured this book and am left wanting more, especially with that cliffhanger! When does book two come out Miss Hoffa?!?! Seriously, I need it, right now 😂
This is a must read for those looking for a Spicy Fantasy. Add it to your TBR, or just go read it right now!
