A collection of gems from India's best-loved cartoonist. From financial crises to the woes of householders, from political instability to rampant corruption, Laxman's cartoons capture the entire gamut of contemporary Indian experience. Hilarious and thought-provoking at the same time, this is a treasure house of humour from one of the most striking voices commenting on Indian socio-political life today. This is a revised edition of the original published in 1999.
'''Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Iyer Laxman''' (born October 23 1924, Mysore, India) is an Indian cartoonist, illustrator and humorist. He is widely regarded as India's greatest-ever cartoonist and is best known for his creation ''The Common Man".
R. K. Laxman was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He has won many awards for his cartoons, including Asia's top journalism award, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, in 1984.
Alright, so I found this book in my college library and I figured eh, it's only a bunch of cartoons. Shouldn't take long. So when I started reading, I realized that indeed, it didn't take long to read it. I guess I was done with the entire book in about an hour or two (more of something between the two). Before this, I had only ever seen one or two cartoons by Laxman around but I had heard a lot of his skills as a cartoonist and a humour writer. That was what initially prompted me to go and pick it up.
And well, I wasn't particularly disappointed. Sure, there were few of them that I didn't very much understand but maybe that was more because of the fact that those cartoons were from before my time than because of my negligence. Or at least that's what I'd like to believe. So don't you go around shattering my illusion, got it?
Took me just around an hour to complete the book which is probably because it is just a compilation of Mr. Laxman's popular cartoons. Nevertheless, the short introduction and witty cartoons had me chuckling till the last page. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to take in some strong social satire with a pinch of humor.
4/5 STARS When you need something to have a good chuckle at, you pick Laxman's works. Laxman's style of making the best of cartoons from political situations and issues is just so on point. Quick and breezy. Highly recommend it.
