Fourth in the series, this is the first I have read of the Max Grady series, but was an excellent introduction to the series, as I will be backtracking to pick up the others. I thoroughly enjoyed Grady, as well as his former police side-kick Callie. Grady, no longer with the Philadelphia Police Department, is recruited by Detective Callie to help solve a series of murders she suspects are related. Together, they get into all sorts of altercations, but will they be able to find the bad guy? In time? Only time will tell. YOu can't go wrong with the series by J K Kalis. She will keep you up nights.

Arrest of innocent man leads to spectacular revenge - 5 Stars

The overloaded Pittsburgh police department gets an arrest and conviction of Liam Reid for having some pills in his car when he is stopped for a traffic violation. Unfortunately, Liam, even though he was convicted, was innocent of the intent to sell drugs. Liam developed a huge desire for revenge while he festered in jail. In the meantime, Liam's arresting officer, Lieutenant Max Grady, managed to get himself thrown off the police force for beating up another suspect who was in handcuffs.

Pittsburgh was having a overwhelming problem with drugs at the same time that the police force was shrinking. Max's problem of not being able to control his temper, together with having no interests beyond being a policeman, led to a spiral into self-pity and drunkenness. None of his former police buddies from ten years on the job were willing to speak to Max. Max had brought shame on the department.

Once Liam was released from jail, he had almost no opportunities for legitimate employment. No job, no money, and no welcome from his now ex-wife led Liam to learning a lucrative trade - drug trafficking.

On a whim, the chief of Detectives called Max after a string of deaths, mentioning that a person was killed at an address that was familiar to Max. The story jumps at this point as Max, who had been on a nearly continuous bender after leaving the job he loved, takes interest in his surroundings.

Additional deaths occur. Max's astute observations contribute to figuring out that some of the deaths were not self-inflicted. Max attempts to achieve some level of alcohol abstinence without professional help; he also tries to make amends to his behavior.

As the investigation into the Pittsburgh pile up of dead bodies with a possible drug connection of over-prescription of pain relievers illustrates the interaction of (illegal) drugs and healthcare in the United States. Nothing can prepare the reader for a horrendous escalation in violence and death resulting from the illegal drug trade. This fast-moving story is gripping; "Two Cold Killers" has a can't-put-it-down feel.

I’ll be honest: Two Cold Killers did not sweep me off my feet in chapter one. It took me half the book (almost) to get fully invested. Max, our resident ex-cop/alcoholic/self-pity expert, spends the early chapters doing emotional laps around the misery track. I get that he’s had a rough go at life, but his “woe is me” with the back of his hand to his forehead routine had me wanting to reach into the pages, slap the whiskey glass out of his hand, and tell him, “Dude. Consequences.”

But then Max started cleaning up his act. Literally. Dumping his whiskey down the drain, avoiding the bar, picking up the wreckage that was his house. And as he sobered up, his brain cells started firing again. Watching his detective instincts resurface was like finally seeing the headlights come on during a long, dark drive. Suddenly, the story had momentum.

I knew who the villain was, absolutely. But the “how” and the “why” kept me reading. I needed to know what connected a corrections officer, two drug dealers, and Max’s own mother. When his mom’s death was officially ruled a homicide, the pieces really started snapping together. Forensics is fascinating.

By the end, Max walks into an AA meeting and finally admits he has a problem. And look, I’m not saying I jumped up and cheered, but I may have nodded approvingly like a proud, slightly exhausted parent at a school assembly. It even made me think about picking up the next book in the series.

But.

Max must stay sober, and the self-pity has got to go. My patience has limits.

If you like character-driven mysteries where a protagonist has to scrape himself off the floor before solving anything, this might be your jam. Max is messy, frustrating, and occasionally infuriating, but once he stops spiraling, the story becomes an engaging ride. I’m cautiously curious to see where Kalis takes him next.

This is what happens when two cold killers face off…

This fourth-in-series book has Detective Max Grady hitting rock bottom. Max is no longer a detective, having lost control of his emotions on a previous case, and is spiraling down the drain turning to alcohol as a means to fill his now empty days. This once highly effective, if a little rough around the edges, detective can’t figure out how to get his life back on track without his job and badge. Sometimes answers come from the strangest places. As bodies begin to drop, Max’s former partner, Detective Cassie Reynolds, is being overloaded with homicide cases and, despite not wanting to turn to Max, she puts aside her anger and frustration with his actions and asks for his help. What unfolds from there is a riveting, high-octane adventure that will keep you spellbound until you reach that very last page. I have no reservations about recommending any of this author’s work but this particular story is exceptional in its exploration of the psychology of the characters. Yes, there is plenty of action, loads of suspense and a great storyline but the various emotional issues faced by all the characters and the toll those issues took on the characters, in my opinion, made this story far more powerful than most thrillers. Nicely done.

Road to redemption

What happens when one mistake brings your whole world crashing down around you? When the life you’ve so carefully built up and has become your identity is gone in an instant? Detective Max Grady faces these challenging questions when a routine task of serving a warrant goes sideways. He’s off the force and wallowing in drink and misery when a call from his old lieutenant wakes him up. There’s a case that’s way too similar to the way his mother died to be coincidence. But what can Grady do? He’s no longer on the right side of the thin blue line. Still his instincts tell him something is very wrong and he can’t stand by and just let it happen. So he does what he knows best investigates. The answers he finds and the journey to get them are far more hazardous than he could have ever imagined.
What an incredible reading experience! Rock bottom is a phrase thrown around a lot but here we see a man immersed in it and his slow climb back towards a life he can be proud to live. There’s plenty of twists and turns and explosive surprises. An edge of your seat, can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next read!.

Detective Max Grady’s life has completely unraveled. Fired after using excessive force during an arrest, he’s lost his badge, his purpose, and the respect of his former colleagues—many of whom were disciplined alongside him and haven’t forgiven him since. With his mother gone, his brother in a care home, and his days drowning in whiskey at a local bar, Max is a man adrift.

But when a string of brutal murders rocks the city, his former partner reaches out—off the record—asking for help. He welcomes being pulled back into the world he left behind, Max starts to notice chilling similarities between the new case and his mother’s death. As his instincts kick in and his sharp detective mind begins to cut through the haze, the investigation begins to take shape.

Despite outrage from the department’s top brass, Max teams up with his ex-partner and, eventually, earns the reluctant approval of his former chief. Together, they peel back layers of corruption, secrets, and long-buried truths.

With nonstop action, a gritty and unforgettable cast of characters, and a mystery that twists and turns until the final page, this gripping crime thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. A raw, emotional, and utterly compelling redemption story—you will not be disappointed.

Max goes with a team to serve a warrant. After the guy is arrested and in hand cuffs Max loses it and beats him. That gets him suspended and eventually fired. He is lost without his work and takes up drinking. One night after he has to be driven home, he gets a call from the lieutenant. He is told that a woman has overdosed in the same building as his mother. He does his best to sober up and goes to the building. Cassie his former partner is exhausted from all the cases she is working. She lets him in to see the woman and he notices that the woman had been restrained and it was a murder not an overdose. That has him thinking that possibly his mother didn't overdose. That starts a very exciting story that will keep your attention to the last page.

This is the fourth book in the series, but it is stand alone. Once you read it you will want to go back and read all the others. Its a great book and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Two Cold Killers by K.J. Kalis
Detective Max Grady Thrillers Book Four
Detective Max Grady is in big trouble. He lost his control…and then lost everything he was. Three months later, he becomes more like the man who fathered him than he’d ever admit.
Meanwhile, Detective Cassie Reynolds, Grady’s former partner, is getting hit with case after case, body after body. The PD is short-staffed, and she’s on her own. When the cases seem to be connected, she needs Grady’s help.
A page-turning story from beginning to end. I don’t want to give too many details and spoil it for anyone, but it’s another great story.

Looking at the reflection on the bottom of a glass is not where Detective Max Grady expected to find himself. But that is what life has dealt him…or is it? Realizing it has to stop, he looks for something to focus on, to bring him out of this funk. Bodies dropping around him have a very sobering effect.

What happens when someone is actually innocent of a crime, not just saying they are. In this case, innocence was the beginning, but certainly not the end.

A very well written and intriguing story with lots of twists and turns to keep you hooked and reading to the end. There are many interesting characters, full of their own faults and problems, but with the main character, Grady, a damaged but excellent detective, wrestling with his peronal demons while trying to solve the mounting number of murders in the city, all the while dealing with the consequences of no longer being a police detective because of previous actions. A most enjoyable read throughout.

This is a very good thriller, with the tension ramping up and up. I have to say I’m a bit late to this series as it’s the first one I’ve read, but boy it won’t be the last. This author certainly knows how to craft a good story that’s for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would very much like to read another. Highly recommended.

This was my introduction to Max Grady and now I will go back to see how it all began.  What a fabulous read!

Max is no longer a police detective due to his own missteps.   His ex partner is overwhelmed with new cases and turns to Max for help.   Can he keep it together and help effectively?  You will have to read the book to find out.

This story will suck you in from page one and was very hard to put down.

Following an incident at an arrest Max Grady finds himself kicked out of the police force and spiraling into depression and alcoholism.

When his former partner is called into investigate a OD victim at the same apartment block when Max's mother also OD'd Max is forced to sober up and lend a hand.

A flawed main character and a partner who is very aware of her limitations make an interesting duo which, when combined with a suitably evil villain and an excellent plot make this an enthralling read which is difficult to put down

He is no longer a detective and his life is down in the dumps. His mother is dead, his brother is sick so he drowns his sorrows in the local pub. A body appears just like his mothers which makes him question what happened to her. Was it an accident? Can he help his brother? Will he find the answers he needs? See just where he will take you.

Two Cold Killers by K.J. Kalis. (Detective Max Grady #4)

This can be read as a stand-alone book even though this is book 4 in a series. This story is a compelling expose of choices and actions having far reaching consequences. I liked the fast paced story line and the realistic depiction of the unintended consequences of the choices the characters made. I was engaged with the characters and the storyline.
A great read. 4 stars.

Two Cold Killers is a story of a Pittsburgh punk officer how makes a mistake and beats up a drug dealer. He loses his job over the incident and turns to alcohol. His former partner asks for his assistance in solving a murder case. He discovers some similarities to other cases. The story is well done and enjoyable reading. The book is good, but somewhat predictable. I would read more by this author.

A little tired of reading about bad tempered drunks being dangerous on the job and being macho at it. But the story moved pretty well, so an ok read. Of course he had to do some things against protocol and be a lone gunman and not call for backup or leave a message of warning at the right time. That seems like lazy writing to cause problem situations. And the end big problem that I won't mention, is not possible technically, like how some stories will tell you a guy got electrocuted by a car battery. I don't know, maybe I know more technical stuff than the usual reader?? Anyway, the book was ok overall.

great pace and credibility

Well written and credible. The story unfolds and links the many avenues together well. Sadly it demonstrates the corruption that we believe has got into the legal system and the weaknesses that are within it. Max as the main character has a number of personal issues to deal with as well as trying to help solve the complex crimes around him, without actually realising his own family involvement.
Very cleverly created and well worth the read.

If you had any ideas where this book was leading, by the end, you would wonder how or why that idea was so far off.
The characters are well done, the story easy to follow and allows you to sympathize with the main character.
Cannot wait for the next chapter in this fantastic series.

To be honest, the book started out slow. Typical cop gets in trouble drinks a lot, and doesn’t do well. However, from that point on Facebook picked up a rapid pace, action thriller that left me impressed. The characters were well developed in. The plot with all of this twist was extremely interesting. Overall I highly recommend this book.

Mad Max

Seems like one step forward for Max and several steps back. Consequences for actions cause so many problems.
As Max realizes how far he has fallen, it takes a lot of effort and discipline to begin to claw his way back.
A very good story that hits home with all of the lessons. Thank you KJ Kalis.
The most profound book of the series.

Excellent

This is another wonderful mystery from KJ Kalis. Max is drinking heavily after being fired from the police department. He’s no longer a detective but it appears he has become a drunk. Wrapped in pity for himself his life is in free fall. But wait and see what’s around the next corner for him.

Really needed a good editor

The story was decent but the sentence structures were distracting. A good editor would have cleaned that up and tightened the story. I will go back and try the series in the hope that this was a blip, but I doubt it. There was enough in the story to make me want to know more about Max and Cassie.

This series was fantastic. The stories went well together when read chronologically, the plots were well developed, and you get tucked into the main people's lives. Great read!
