Men of Fairlake #6

Cake & Comfort

Rate this book
Every scar tells a story. He stepped into my story, bringing his own, offering a taste of healing I never knew I craved. Secrets hurt, but comfort might be just a kiss away.

I went through hell. If it hadn’t been for my brother doing…what he did, I wouldn’t have survived. He nearly didn’t. We were children, and the records are sealed, but if the truth ever gets out, I don’t think we’ll survive again. So I keep my secrets.

My past does not define me. I’m just a baker…a broken baker with no social skills. If you want freshly baked bread or fancy cakes, I’m your man, but if you want anything more…forget it. I can barely get through the day without my lists and routines. But it works for me, and I’m happy…I think.

Then, out of nowhere, a famous movie star shows up wanting a cake for his sister’s wedding, and he won’t take no for an answer. Who the hell does Sylas Goner think he is? And why won’t he leave me alone?

Turns out he’s persistent and determined…and hot, handsome, funny, intelligent, and God, he wants me. Why? But Sylas refuses to give up. He shows me a brighter future full of possibilities I never allowed myself to imagine. Then, just when I start to believe my life could include love and a future I never dreamt of, the past comes rushing back. My dreams vanish, and I’m forced to give Sylas up. I knew it was too good to be true.

But I underestimated Sylas’ tenacity.

I very much appreciated the slow burn romance

While we've still got the same continuity errors as in the previous book, they're not as obvious here as there's no investigation storyline.

Instead what we get is a super sweet slow burn romance between two guys who both have had serious trauma in their childhoods and who are both on the ADHD/Autism spectrum.

It's never explicitly stated but both men acknowledge they believe they are and that they've got personality traits which have been created in the past as a means of dealing with their experiences.

Grant has been kn the background of most of the previous books, he's the baker in town. Sylva is an actor, who visits Fairlake to try and get Grant to make a cake for his twin sister Sylvia.

Watching these two navigate through their attraction, their complete opposite personalities and the residual damage of their parents' horrific behaviour, is both sweet and, when things turn physical, seriously hot.

This is definitely one of my favourites in this far more complicated story world that Romeo has created.

This was an excellent, well-written story. The two characters, baker Grant and movie star, Sylas are two very complicated men, in spite of that still managed to find their way together through all the obstacles. It was more than wonderful how Sylas just seemed to understand Grant in ways that most of the other people, even those closet in his life... didn't, and some didn't even seem to bother trying. Grant, on the other hand, allowed Sylas to break through the shell he'd erected and had lived with for decades.

This is a book that it actually took me a few days to read. The writing style was excellent, but the narrative seemed to be a bit long and overdone, at least at first. As I read on, I came to understand that the author wasn't being "long-winded"... he wanted the reader to see and understand every single aspect of what made this baker and the shiny movie star so very perfect for one another. After that realization set in, I was able to devour the book. I have the other books in this series, but none of them read like this one, offering the necessary background to understand how these two guys that were so different, needed one another like they needed oxygen.

My favorite thing about the whole book was how realistically, and compassionately, all the mental health issues were discussed and handled, and not just thrown in as a "plot device" or to create drama; there was enough drama when Sylas's mother got just what she so richly deserved. I cheered!! It was a lovely thing to witness, and also so very well-done. I found out that this author is a fellow "Michigander", but he would be on my "favorite author's list" no matter where he lived.

I swear I'm in a 2 year book slump (could count on one hand the amount of true gems I've read in this time period). The slump is starting to incorporate author's that used to be my go to.

First I've had to take a break from Eden Finley and Onley James and now I'm having to add Romeo Alexander to the list :( I haven't enjoyed their last few books and while I didn't find this terrible it wasn't great either.

What I liked:

- Both MCs especially Grant

What didn't work:

- I don't think this author likes women. The mother's in her books are nearly always horrendous and this book both MCs have truly awful moms. Also I don't know how I felt about Sylas' sister. Their banter wasn't amusing to me and I didn't like that she was happy enough to be the favourite child,
Until she wasnt.
- The way Sylas was treated by his family - I wish he didnt brush it off so much.
- Grants backstory is laced with trauma plus he's on the spectrum but it all felt surface level. I spent a lot of the book thinking Barbara Elsborg would wreck me if she had been the author of this book.
- Luke and Felix - nothing against them but can I have an original plot in an mm romance for 500 Alex? It was so predictable and it would seem they are the couple for the next book so I'm guessing we'll see a lot of this story but from Luke and Felix pov? Pass.

There were other things that annoyed me too so yeah, to sum up this was a miss for me.

Grant & Sylas

Rating: 4.5 ⭐

- Small Town Romance
- Hurt/Comfort
- Slow Burn
- Baker / Actor

I went through a series of emotions while reading this one. For starters, please please please read the trigger warnings! Now, the warnings could have definitely been a bit more specific because I was blindsided by what kind of abuse was mentioned in this book.

The MCs come from toxic family traumas and it's believed that both men are neurodivergent, which helps them appreciate and understand each other. Both men are peculiar in their own way in how they see and interact with people. Their traumas and their behaviors are handled with sensitivity and care throughout.

Grant is a beautiful and sweet soul who feels out of place when it comes to others, but he ends up surrounding himself with people who love and accept him while taking the time to also learn his subtle cues to better understand Grant as a whole. Grant is known as the grumpy baker because he avoids social situations and lets his assistant Louise handle all the peopling. Love Louise and her snarky, crazy dressing and sneaky self! He keeps to himself and maintains his list and tasks to fill his days, along with worrying constantly about his older brother. Grant and his brother, Felix, have been through hell and back and are still learning how to actually be brothers to each other, instead of just arguing. The brother's childhood traumas and it's after effects are so tough to read about and I needed time to pause here and there.

Sylas is all the energy, all the time. He is bright, kind and smarter than he gets credit for. He is very close to his twin sister, Sylvia, and his assistant/best friend, Luke. He is running an errand to get a cake commissioned for Sylvia's wedding by Grant and on his journey of self-discovery out in the small town of Fairlake. Sylas uses humor, alcohol and his fun attitude to cover up his insecurities or get through overwhelming social situations. Sylas has always been seen as the wild child and less successful in comparison to his sister. I love his sister for never treating him differently or pushing him to the side because of her successes. Luke has his own story that goes on in the background of this book and he is the MC in the next book along with Grant's brother Felix.

This a slow burn romance over several months and it takes a while before they admit to themselves, mainly Grant, that they have feelings and attraction to each other. Once they start to hang out, Grant gets used to Sylas' presence and quirks. They're so cute together and can read each other so well that it freaks them out sometimes. As a couple, they heal, grow in confidence and in social understandings.

I had grown more and more curious about this bakery shop over all previous books, not only about the grumpy baker Grant but also his funny and wise assistant Louise.

Therefore I'm so happy we finally got to know the soul behind Grant's facade and that he found his happiness with someone who sees him and loves him as he is.

Sylas is a bright, witty and kind man. Just as Grant, he also has layers, and behind his light and loud attitude is a man who needs to find his place in the world and needs acceptance and love too.

Both men are peculiar in their own way and fit with each other like yin and yang.
If you're familiar with personality types, very soon I recognised Grant as INTJ and Sylas and ENTP and such a perfect match.
I believe both men are neurodivergent and perhaps that's the reason why they have an immediate connection and attraction.

But as for many neurodivergent people, trauma has played an important role in who they are and it's hard to determine what is their trauma and what is his natural traits in how they ultimately see the world, their needs, their reactions, their emotions.

Grant in particular, has a heartbreaking story with a heavily traumatic childhood, so much that it was hard sometimes to not get lost in the emotional side of the story and focus on the hopeful present of this couple.

Grant's life and trauma is forever interconnected with his brother Felix, and I am extremely eager to read next book, hear his side of the story and hopefully see him healing.

Trigger Warnings (also in the book's foreword):

This installment of this series is true to its name...
Cake and Comfort! The rich , well written storyline is the perfect blend of both sweet and bitter! A almost agonizing " slow burn " is evenly mixed away with outstanding character development, emotional depth, and a compelling plot line! It's tasteful, well crafted world building seems tangible and life-like!
The world of Fairlake , it's self is the icing on the CAKE ! The warm, sweet flow of the story is peppered with just enough raw angst and grit to spark your attention and keep you engaged! All , to reach a very salty and riveting climatic end! You can wash it all down with the COMFORT of a warm-hearted , delightful HEA !
A tasty delight and a delicious dish well served! 😋

This is a well written slow burn romance with strong characters in Grant and Sylas. The author brings a grumpy/cheery MM romance with an interesting banter. He moves the story fluidly with his descriptive scenes and delivers a great addition to the series.

This one started off rough and didn’t get much better, for me. If you like happy-go-lucky “brooding bad boys” that aren’t brooding then you may like this.

Warning about some of the language around mental health. There’s use of “schizophrenic” as a descriptive for a non-schizophrenic person’s facial expressions. And theres a bit of a rant about how people don’t need to get diagnosed with ADHD or autism as adults because there’s nothing you can do about it other than take medication. And the brother’s bipolar disorder was treated more like a behavior problem that he just needs to get a grip on rather than a mental health disorder.

This is my second Romeo Alexander book and the second one that I've read in the Men of Fairlake series. There are plenty of allusions to the other five books in the series, but this can be read as a standalone, in my opinion. I would definitely recommend you go back and read the others, however, because Romeo has a fantastic way with words and slowburn romances. Plus, I would like to pack up and move to the quaint little town of Fairlake myself based purely on his beautiful scene setting.

This was definitely a slowburn that started off with our MCs as hostile strangers. At the pushing of a sweet receptionist and friend, Grant and Sylas decide to get to know one another, and the relationship begins to bloom from there. This is a huge deal because Grant is clearly on the autism spectrum.

As someone with Level 1 ASD myself, I usually refrain from diagnosing or assuming real people or book characters have ASD unless it is explicitly confirmed. We don't get that in this book, but it smacks you in the face. Grant has sensory differences, social struggles, a flat affect, has a hard time with inferences, struggles with rigidity and routine... And I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed when Grant was just referred to as "weird", "odd", "strange", and "oblivious" throughout the book. The only time Sylas asks point blank if he's on the spectrum, Grant says he was never tested and that a diagnosis wouldn't do him any good anyway. Maybe this is just me taking my personal baggage into this, but it left me feeling hurt to the point that I needed to take a break from reading at some parts. I know people think I'm all those things, too. I know they don't always understand. Using those terms as "banter" landed more like familiar insults.

I wish it was just said in plain English whether or not Grant has ASD because that would have been a beautiful opportunity for representation if handled with care. I ended up kind of circling on whether or not they'd talk about it for quite a while, and the way they addressed it left things vague.

The relationship built slowly and felt genuine. And I'm glad that Sylas has such a good support in Sylvia! And I would like to wrap Felix up in several comfy blankets and keep him safe for the rest of his life. Romeo's portrayal of a person experiencing mania was SPOT ON.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a slow burn grumpy/sunshine MM romance set in a sleepy, cozy little small town. Triggers include childhood SA, unaliving, and mental health struggles. I would not recommend this book to anyone on the spectrum.

Not sure what I want to read right now (reading slump mixed with mild seasonal depression). However, Romeo Alexander's "Men of Fairlake" has been on my TBR list for a while now, so I figured I'd start there. The sixth novel is "Cake and Comfort."
["Every scar tells a story. He stepped into my story, bringing his own, offering a taste of healing I never knew I craved. Secrets hurt, but comfort might be just a kiss away.

Wow. Holy shit. This book was so many levels of sweet and fucked up. Don’t get me wrong, it was fabulous, but I didn’t think we could top the shitty childhood/backstories we had earlier in this series (I was so terribly wrong).

But where Grant was caution and predictably and reason, Silas was a glorious mess or loud and spontaneous and fate. They were perfect for each other in so many ways. Especially when Sy went all scorched earth to protect his man ;)

This one has paralleling timelines with the next book. Which again, I kinda like, but at the same time, it took what I can only imagine is a loooot of the plot out of the surprise/suspense zone.

Trigger Warnings: past child abuse, childhood rape, serious mental health issues, and more

Love when you're not looking for it

This series has dealt with some serious subjects and Romeo writes sensitively and respectfully about what his characters have experienced and the trauma that they live with. The trigger warnings don't go far enough so please approach with care.
Grant and his brother suffered unspeakable things in their horrific childhood home. They have different coping mechanisms, with Grant liking order and lists and routine whereas Felix is more chaotic and mercurial but they are both still suffering.
Film star Sylas has the mother from hell, who prefers his more talented twin sister, and he's a bit of a chaos gremlin. He hides his feelings well behind his snarky mask, utilising all his acting talent, but it hurts nonetheless.
After a less than stellar first meeting, Grant and Sylas become a really sweet couple but it's a slow burn, which is just right for Grant's character. I loved watching Sylas watching Grant, learning all his expressions and tells, to better understand the man who begins to fascinate him. Likewise, I loved watching Grant come out of his shell and start living.
All the previous books have encompassed the town and its inhabitants more than this one, though we do get a few cameos that made me smile, but I felt it was the right decision to make this more focused on just Grant and Sylas. After seeing Grant and his larger than life employee, Louise, previously in the series, it was really good to finally make their acquaintance.
Romeo does bring Grant's brother, Felix, and Sylas' best friend, Luke, into the story and their book is next.

This book has a nice balance between the traumatic events, the learning and healing, and the sweet romance that blossoms.
Grant and Sylas are complex yet completely likeable characters once you get to know them. They have diverse backgrounds, but neither had an ideal childhood. Sylas' mother is a nasty, controlling piece of work, but for Grant, his childhood was extremely bad. Both men have certain behaviors that are a direct result of their upbringing. Neither man is what they appear to be on the surface, each has a greater depth to them that only those who take the time to get to know them will ever understand.
This is an emotional story. It was heartbreaking learning the history, a joy to watch them heal and discover a powerful love. There are some laughs along the way, as well as some steamy encounters, a few ups and downs, and a sweet HEA.
I was gripped by this book and read it straight through to the end. It was written with sensitivity for certain aspects, but was balanced with humor, wonderful friends, and a unique couple finding their way together.

I would definitely recommend this book, just be sure to read the trigger warnings.

Grant and Sylas are just so great!!!
First, let me say I do love a grumpy man, so Grant made me extremely happy but I did like his assistant Louise they had banter that made me smile. It was what they needed in the bakery. Grant has a lot going on in his life with his brother Felix. They didn’t have the best upbringing and that is saying it kindly. But Grant tries to be there at all times for Felix.
Then we have Sylas He is an actor, successful, living a Hollywood life. He comes to fairLake as a favour for his sister who is his twin, and it’s a commission for Sylvia’s wedding cake by our favourite bakery. So this is where Sylas and Grant meet.
I’ve got to say I went through quite a few emotions reading this book. I don’t usually like the slow burn but there was something special about this couple. They came out the other side, stronger men.
I have enjoyed every book from this series and cannot wait for the next one.

If you have read books in this series before this one, Grant has been around but in this story we find out why he has been the grumpy baker who keeps to himself. Grant has a past that we learn about that helps to explain his reasons for being who he currently is. What is really great in this story is that Sylas not only sees and accepts him for who he is, Sylas persistently fights for a relationship with him and it is a relationship that Grant really does need. They are very different men, but both are so likeable just as they are and their slow burn romance gives us time to also root for them to work their way to their ever after with one another.

Has been a while since I read a book in this series and it was kind of nice to return to Fairlake. Not many of the characters from the other books appear in this one, but they are mentioned and remembered.

This story is basically about a broken baker and a movie star. A typical trope in romance. But this one takes you on a slightly more emotional journey through the almost on the spectrum bake and the bad boy movie star with the witch of a mother getting all up in your business and a twin sister that puts up with the momager, while keeping close with her twin.

Some dark moments and triggers so be careful with this one, but still, life isn't always sunshine and roses and Romeo writes some grit within his stories.

Audio: 5 stars, I do enjoy Michael Dean, I know not everyone does haha but he has grown on me over the years.
Book: 3 stars

It was okay, I wasn't expecting the past trauma for Grant and Felix to be that horrendous, but please look at Triggers for that before you start!

This book was cute, but to me there was some moments that I felt were kinda slow, so I was losing some interest.

I did like how Grant would open up to Sylas and vise versa, it was good to see how they interacted.

But compared to Falling Embers, this one wasn't as good to me.

Grant is the kind of character that, the more you learn about them, the more you care. Beneath the rigid, orderly surface layer there’s a complex, kind person who’s been through a lot (feels like a good place to add a gentle note that you’ll want to heed the content warnings for the story). Seeing Sylas grow to appreciate Grant for all of the various nuances of who he is, and seeing what develops between them, is well worth the read– it’s emotional, and rewarding. Readers of the author’s previous books will find some recognizable faces in this one, but it can absolutely work as a standalone read.

Grant & Sylas

This is a perfect example of how there’s definitely someone out there for everyone. Grant is not a fan of most people or interacting with those he does tolerate. His schedules keep him focused and he doesn’t need interference. Sylas wants to help his sister, his twin with her wedding. Getting the cake nailed down with the baker that isn’t very cordial is his mission. As they agree to get to know each other, Sylas brings out another side of Grant. He’s patient and kind and not at all bothered by Grant’s standoffish manner. Grant sees the kind, funny and patient man in Sylas as they spend more time together. I enjoyed this one.

Oh my heart! The characters in this book have stories that lead to some serious baggage. They struggle to survive, but they do! Romeo gives them a community, friends and family that form loving, caring supportive bonds. Unpacking the baggage, is difficult but Romeo is an amazing storyteller and brings us through it. This is a triumphant read full of fun, sass and plenty of love. Grant, Felix, Silas, Louise, Luke are all amazing characters and I look forward to reading more about them. Well done! What can I say about the men of Fairlake? They are a different breed. I like Grant and how he is different from any of the other men of Fairlake and I loved how Romeo Alexander used someone who was not typical. Grant is grumpy and closed off, with good reason.
Sylas is ADHD and puppy all mixed into one. The combination of the two is unlike anything I’ve read. I like them, but at the same time Sylas rubbed me the wrong way, I can’t pin point what. 4.5 is my rating only because I still love Adam and Bennett best.

I have been very curious about what made Grant tick. He has been in the background of the series, and I needed his story, and I needed that story to get a happy ending. Grant is very precise and orderly with his interactions with others and on the surface, it has come across as a bit non caring. Getting to really feel along with Grant was wonderful. Grant was somehow just what Sylas needed as well. This entire story had such a romantic feel!

4.5 stars. Grant had been a minor character in earlier books and I had been looking forward to his story. This was a very worthwhile read with two MCs with toxic family traumas and different neurodiversities. All their difficulties were written with good details and plenty of sensitivity. Grant deserved every nice person in this book.

I just love everyone in Fairlake. This book brought us Grant, who you see here and there throughout the series but was never a mainfront until now. People consider Grant a little different, but Sylas seems to be able to understand and get along with him just fine, after Grant forgives Sylas for interrupting his schedule. I loved this book and I can't wait until we see more of the men of Fairlake.

Another great book and interesting characters as before. Grant is steely and unwavering until he gets to know Sylas. The two of them hit it off and things get heated until a whirlwind in the form of the mother from hell tries to step in. That's when the fireworks begin! Love this series because it touches on all aspect of life!.

Great story

Wow, what a ride this book was. Grant and Sylas were so different yet so the same. Grant, the not so outgoing or friendly. Sylas, a Hollywood star, couldn't be more outgoing. I had all emotions reading while story. Louise was fantastic. She kept Grant in line.
This is book 6 in the Fairlake series. I didn't read the previous. However,  I wasn't lost. I will definitely be going back to read them.

In pasts grip

Talk about horrible parents, you got Sylas with the most evil mother and Grant with nightmare inducing parents. A past that has molded him to becoming stunted and closed off to people. His brother suffered far worse and treated as a monster for protecting his brother and himself from a fate worse than death.
Great characters and a really good addition to this series. Now I am off to read Felix and Luke's story.

Grant lives his life on a precise schedule as the baker of Fairlake. Silas was in town to take a break from life and meets an intriguing baker that has no clue who he is. It was a really sweet and adorable story of the two who had questionable parents and finding acceptance of who they are with each other.
