DI Erica Swift #12

The Night Prowler

You have to stop him.I’m not strong enough.

This is the message DI Erica Swift finds written in blood on the first victims’ wall… Shockwaves ripple through the East End of London as a killer is murdering couples in their homes, waking them in the middle of the night with a torch shining in their eyes.

The murderer seems to know his victims’ movements. Stalking them to learn their routines. All couples in London are locking their doors a little tighter at night. DI Swift and her partner DS Turner are put on the case, and they’ll do everything in their power to find this man before he kills again.

But with the recent change in Erica and Shawn’s relationship, could the person they’re trying to catch set his sights on them next?

The connection to the incels felt out-of-left-field, the way it was presented almost comedic. A lot of the dialogue around it, and maybe I have fatigue from seeing it in so many books as of late, I just disliked the direction for the novel.

The mental health aspect wasn't handled well either. The DID stuff felt more reminiscent of older tropes of split personality disorder. It wasn't much of a twist after the second perspective, and it's also an oversaturated twist.

There was some needless character interviews that felt like they were designed to waste pages i.e. the interview with the sister, as we had already quite established that she was sure of his innocence from 3 other conversations. It felt quite redundant.

There was some new ideas, and the red herring did work on me, and keep me latches on, but it wasn't quite the emotional beat I thought it would be.

Overall, I felt really disconnected from the characters throughout this book. The mentions of Poppy and Shawn, and the surrounding struggles felt scarce. There was no real arc for her this book, it more just set up the next one right at the end (a subplot I will be looking forward to). There were occasional thoughts interspersed, but limited interaction. It was odd considering the situation almost directly affected them as family, mirroring the first book and it was easily brushed off.

As the strained relationships with the surrounding cast are a major aspect why I like this series, it was a tad disappointing.

This wasn't one of the stronger books in this series, but I have faith this one just didn't land with me. Looking forward to the next still.

Obsessed with this series.
I read them so fast because they're
impossible to put down.
Just a great twist on the main plot with really topical clever ideas.
The character development throughout the series is also adding a real extra element.

Excellent storytelling.

A well written edition of this series.
Such a fulfilling outcome of these hard to explain crimes. A plausible ending, makes it all worthwhile.

Book twelve in this creepily good thriller series.
Each book is for sure stand alone but why do that to yourself? If you like chilling, creepy, thrillers this is a series you need to grab.

D.I. Swift has another gruesome case to deal with.
Erika and Shaun her partner are handed the case... suspect is going into homes in the middle of the night, and putting a flash light in the victim's eyes. CREEPY...

Who is doing it? And what about the cryptic message left in blood on a wall?
This author knows exactly how to weave a story that keeps you gripped till the end.

oooh, and things are picking up in the private world of Erika and Shaun too woohoo!

I for one can't wait for the next book in this series!
