This is a well illustrated book that aims to give you tools to design your home to provide good health in terms of safety, chemicals, etc. It goes room by room with suggestions and features a lot of lovely photos. It is most definitely designed more for wealthy people who are building their own homes or doing major remodeling, rather than just giving steps for anybody to make their home greener and healthier. There were a few areas where I was surprised by things not included. For instance, it recommends buying vintage furniture to save money in the nursery but doesn't mention that it's not generally safe to use a vintage crib or that many vintage children's toys, dishes and even books contain dangerous levels of lead. Still, it's a helpful and inspiring book in general.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
As a new home-owner looking for tips on making our living space generally healthier, I was really looking forward to reading this. It gave the impression of offering a multitude of tips for each area of the home, and suggested that multiple budgets were taken into consideration.
The intro threw me off that initial impression immediately. The author is very modern-fitness-centric, and seems to focus a lot of attention on health in relation to constant exercise, dieting, and an all-or-nothing approach. The sense of ego I felt exuding from the intro alone made me a bit wary, but I flipped to chapter one and continued on.
Boy, for a book that touts stress relief and reduction, nothing made me feel more stressed than being told every single pre-existing facet of my home could potentially kill me! Got a non-LED lightbulb? Changing that sucker could cause you to FALL AND DIE. Got running water that many people in developed countries are very lucky to have? If it's not run through an extensive and expensive whole-house filtration system, it could POISON YOU AND YOU COULD DIE. Got throw pillows? Well there's dust in there that could cause you to CHOKE AND DIE. Got any type of material whatsoever in your home, owned or rented, old or new? CANCER. YOU DIE.
Have tons of money and a horticulturist and architect at your disposal or you'll DIE.
I thought this book had really great ideas for making your home functional and comfortable . There were a lot of references made to adding or changing things that likely would only be done by someone with an unlimited budget so a bit unrealistic for the average person. Overall I would recommend this book. It is an easy read with good tips.
Really enjoyed this book. I have been working on both remodeling my house and improving my wellness, and this book had some great ideas on how to combine the two. One of my doctors has recommended I get a water filtration system, and this book has some good tips on that, though I would have loved some more detail on how to choose one. I really liked the pictures of some of the design ideas in this book and would have loved to have seen more of them. I am something of a wellness-obsessed person, so this may be a more appropriate introduction to someone who has not yet thought of things like HEPA filters and grounding outlets. But there were lots of great new-to-me ideas here too such as the idea of zoning your kitchen. This is a great informational read with a wealth of information - would have loved a few more pictures with aesthetic design ideas to round it out.

♡ Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Don't get me wrong - I love the IDEA of implementing the eco-friendly and healthier alternatives this book provides. I definitely don't have the funds to implement more than a few of them though. I would have liked to see more relatable "quick fixes" for those of us that already have the living spaces they do/can't make major changes and want to improve their overall wellbeing with simple and affordable fixes.
An ok read. I'm very happy that the author made a big point about chemicals and volatile organic compounds off gassing from carpets, furnishings and other materials. I've not read any home design books that discuss indoor air quality.
This book had really great ideas for making your home living space a more functional to maximize your health. There is so many safety and accessibility ideas for the home, that I never thought of. Would make a great housewarming gift.
I enjoyed reading this book and learning some wellness tips. It has a lot of informations and tips for each room of the house. Tips for safety and how to make your home feels better and more welcoming. Great book! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Wellness by Design is a beautiful book to help the reader adjust their current living space to maximize health. Admittedly, this concept sounds a bit woo-woo initially, but the author provides valuable tips to optimize your home in 5 areas: accessibility, safety, functionality, decor, and connections. There are design tips for every possible room you can think of and includes gorgeous photos. At times some of the design tips are a bit out of touch for the average person and are likely directed for wealthy individuals, but I still was able to apply many tips to my own apartment. I really enjoyed the chapter on Smart Living as I currently live in an apartment with many smart home features. The author provides pros and cons for all of the recommendations so you can make more informed decisions on how you implement some of the tips, which I found helpful. Overall I think this would be an interesting conversation piece on a coffee table that you and guests may enjoy looking through!

Notes:: So boring, like a wiki-how entry for each little subheading; written maybe for rich people designing their dream home, not at all relatable to me
Helpful tips are shared throughout the book; I didn't find it revolutionary, especially if you are a person that is not building a home from scratch, but, it does point out important considerations that can be applied in your existing space, even if rented; how to ideally make your everyday living more enjoyable and functional to support your activities and for those who may have limitations as well.
Small things that sometimes we don't really think about but that can enhance the space, especially those you spend long times in (aka kitchens and bathrooms!)
I found this book to be very fun to look through, the layout of it makes it very easy to find what you are looking for. This book has a lot of really fun ideas for designing a functional, while also aesthetically pleasing house. The only complaint I have is that some of the ideas were unrealistic for someone with an average budget to do. But overall it is still a pretty good book.
I want to thank Tiller Press for sending me an ARC of this book.
3.5 I liked this book’s focus on selecting features and systems that promote health and wellness in the home (beyond simply redesigns that look nice). I get impatient looking for things like the most effective ventilation fan for a bathroom or spending money on a whole-house water filtration system. This book is a good reminder why those things are important investments.
DNF. I gave it a go, but I can firmly say this book is Not For Me after reading its earnest suggestion of installing a 'morning kitchen' a.k.a. an extra kitchen adjoining your master suite. Whoever out there is living with a morning kitchen, good for you, but I don't think this book is realistic or useful for the average person.
With such useful and relatable sections such as "morning kitchens" "in-law kitchens" and a full page photo of an entire small room dedicated to pet care this one wasn't for me. Composed of any brief sections with not a much info and not enough photos for an interior design book.
This book has some interesting ideas, especially if you're building a home, or remodeling. I'm a poor 23 yr old so most of the information in this book didnt apply to me. Still interesting to reflect on though!
Tries to be too much without going into enough detail about anything. Maybe 10% of the book is useful. The pictures in the book don’t really help much and are not talked about but the author - it’s like it was added by someone else after the book was written.
A great book for inspiration and some great ideas. I loved the photos and suggestions. This is one of those books that plant a seed for future home projects and leaves you feeling excited for future home upgrades.
Was quite repetitive. Instead of repeating the same info for every type of bedroom and bathroom could have been better spent with more tips. Not add a grab bar to your tub said 5 times.
