Crammed into cram school, Uryu runs into Shirahi, a girl he knew from the orphanage. I mean a young woman. Sparks do not fly, which is fine, because Uryu already has the sisters. Except that Shirahi doesn’t think it’s fine at all. And, hey, if you’re stuck in the past anyway, why not entreat the dark powers to change it for you?

This series hardly needed the No Chance Rival, but I am going to confess something. This is well-written and a truly great harem series, only bettered by the genre-demolishing insanity of The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You.

It didn’t start that way, but I’ve loved its current rhythm of going between these supernatural plotlines mixed with the usual fluff and fan service. It’s given it a real angle to work with, along with generally good characters.

Shirahi likes the cold and aloof Uryu, who couldn’t or wouldn’t show much emotion. So much so that she spent her years after getting adopted trying to get back to his side. But while time has not changed her, it has most definitely changed Uryu.

This leads to Shirahi inserting herself at the shrine for a study… date… and quickly piecing together that all three sisters are into her would-be beau in an amusing series of encounters. Followed up with a karaoke scene that has some surprises for everybody and Shirahi realizes she’s not going to win this fight.

Minus that dark god in the mountains that everybody’s making wishes to and all. This turns into a hilarious field trip where everybody but Uryu has a big wish they want fulfilled, each centred around him. This volume deserves an anime adaptation just so we can see that flash mob - even the static version is brilliantly incongruous with the people we know.

And, in the end, nobody makes a wish, in a pointed rebuke of entreating for divine intervention instead of putting the work in. Well, almost nobody, as Shirahi decides to not solve a mystery, but instead rewrite history.

Shirahi is interesting because of how uninteresting she is, honestly. Yes, she has an attractive design, but she’s apparently done nothing but study for five years to keep up with Uryu. Except he’s changed, so she reflects the version of Uryu that would exist if the sisters weren’t around.

Which is exactly the world that Uryu ends up in, except he’s the only one who knows it. The sisters don’t recognize him, he’s back at the orphanage, and Shirahi is his girlfriend. It’s everything Shirahi wants and nothing that Uryu does.

Or does he? This goes a little further in that being forced into this scenario does make Uryu consider Shirahi as a potential partner, which is what she wanted to begin with, and he treats her rather well for all that she’s caught him up in something he’s desperate to get out of.

I really like where the story goes with this. It might be pretty basic, but it mines it for both some good plot and some strong laughs. Yuna’s running gag of throwing salt at Uryu has been amusing, but the variations in what she’s saying keep it fresh, doubly so here. There’s a great swipe at isekai stories too, when the girls suggest Uryu get hit with a truck to go back to his world.

And beyond the stalker gags, I thought the way things play out were a nice change of pace and they emphasize the family aspect of our leads over the general shenanigans. Shirahi provides almost all the fan service in this world and I can’t help but think that might even be intentional.

As usual, I don’t think the story knows quite what to do with Yae half the time, minus emphasize her chest. She does get some brilliant asides and she plays a crucial role in the current arc, but asides do not a main character make.

Beyond that, a great volume. There’s something very satisfying about actually doing something new with the No Chance Rival trope and this does a great job making the inevitable outcome actually interesting. I was invested in the story, I laughed out loud once and chuckled a bunch, that’s more than most series get out of me.

4.5 stars - this might be an appreciation for all the effort the story is putting in or something, but I couldn’t help reflecting how much this series has both grown and grown on me. It’s such a rarity for me to enjoy something like this, so one five star review can’t hurt, right?
