পারমিতা কলেজে পড়ায়। রাজর্ষি ওরফে রাজা উচ্চপদের চাকরি নিয়ে দিবারাত্র ব্যস্ত। যথাসম্ভব মানিয়ে-গুছিয়ে কলেজ আর সংসার দুটোই চালায় পারমিতা। একই সঙ্গে অসুস্থ বাবার চিকিৎসার দেখভালও করতে হয় তাকে। বড় দায়িত্ব পেয়ে রাজা বেঙ্গালুরু চলে গেলে পারমিতার জীবনে এক অদ্ভুত সংকট দেখা দেয়। দু’-একবার অল্প সময়ের জন্য রাজা এসেছে কলকাতায়, পারমিতাও গিয়েছে বেঙ্গালুরু, কিন্তু তাতে চাপা অশান্তি দূর হয়নি। সকলেই যেন চায়, পারমিতা অধ্যাপনার চাকরি ছেড়ে চলে যাক রাজার বেঙ্গালুরুর ফ্ল্যাটে। কী করবে পারমিতা? নিজের জীবনে তার কোনও অধিকার নেই? স্বামীর অনুগমন করাই কি আজও স্ত্রী-র একমাত্র কর্তব্য? সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের ‘অর্ধেক আকাশ’ উপন্যাসে আছে এক অভিমানী নারীর ভালবাসার শাস্তি নিয়ে বেঁচে থাকার মর্মস্পর্শী কাহিনি।

About the author

Her writing focuses on contemporary social issues. She is a perceptive observer of the changing urban milieu and her writing closely examines the contemporary Bengali middle class. Crisis in human relationships and the changing values of the present era along with degeneration of the moral fibre of the society in the backdrop of globalisation and consumerism are depicted in her prose. Exploitations and sufferings of women regardless of their social or economic identities find a distinct voice in her writing. While she is famous for her writing on women's issues, she does not consider herself as a feminist. She took up many odd jobs in her early youth and finally joined the public service which she left in 2004 to become a fulltime writer. Her long career is reflected in many of her stories and novels.

Over the past two decades, Suchitra has written about 24 novels and a large number of short stories in different leading Bangla literary magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kachher Manush (Close to Me), Dahan (The Burning), Kacher Dewal(The Wall Of Glass), Hemonter Pakhi(Bird of Autumn), Neel Ghurni, Aleek Shukh(Heavenly happiness), Gabhir Ashukh (A Grave Illness), Uro Megh(Flying Cloud), Chhera Taar, Alochhaya(Shadows Of Light), Anyo Basanto(Another Spring), Parabas, Palabar Path Nei, Aami Raikishori, Rangin Pritibi and Jalchhobi among others. Her novels and short stories have been translated into many Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. She also writes novels and short stories for children. Her novel Dahan was made into a movie by famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

গোটা একটা মেঘমুক্ত, বজ্রপাতহীন, আলোকোজ্জ্বল, আকাশ কী সবসময় একজন নারী পায়? একজন নারীর আসলে কি কোনো নিজস্ব আইডেন্টিটি থাকে? সে নারী যতই সাবলম্বী হোক না কেন। সমস্ত উপন্যাস জুড়ে এসব প্রশ্নই উত্থাপন করেছেন সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য।
উপন্যাসের সবচেয়ে প্রসংশার দাবিদার হলো সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের ভাষা। সুচিত্রার ভাষা যেন জলের তরঙ্গের মতো। কি সাবলীল ভাবে, কি নির্লিপ্ত ভাবে সমস্ত গল্পটা তিনি বলে গেছেন।
কাহিনীটা নিতান্তই খুব সাধারণ। পারমিতার নামে এক নারী জীবনের গল্প 'অর্ধেক আকাশ'। পারমিতার স্বামী, শ্বশুর, শাশুড়ী, ছেলে, মা, অসুস্থ বাবা, কলেজের চাকরি সব মিলিয়ে দিব্যি সংসার। কিন্তু এর ভিতরে পারমিতার যে দুঃখবোধ, ভাঙ্গাগড়া,নিজের আইডেন্টিটি ক্রাইসিস, আইডেন্টিটি তৈরির জন্যে যে দ্বিধাহীন ছুটে চলা, এই সমস্ত কিছু দিয়েই সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য কতগুলো প্রশ্ন আমাদের সমাজের দিকে ছুঁড়ে দিয়েছেন। এই উত্থাপিত প্রশ্ন কারো কারো কাছে হয়তো অবান্তর মনে হতে পারে।কিন্তু এইটে যে কতখানি নিগূঢ় সত্য, তা বলবার অপেক্ষা রাখে না।

পড়তে পড়তে বারবার মনে হচ্ছিল মেয়েদের জীবন এত কঠিন কেন?
শেষ পর্যন্ত ছাড় দেয়াটা কেবল মেয়েদের থেকেই আশা করে বসে থাকে সমাজ। সেটা জোর করে হলেও। পারমিতা এই সমাজের অসংখ্য মেয়েদের বাস্তব উদাহরণ।
আহামরি কোনো গল্প এই বইয়ে নেই কিন্তু লুকিয়ে আছে জীবনের কঠিন বাস্তবতা। আপাতদৃষ্টিতে দেখা চমৎকার সংসার, ভাল স্বামী, ভাল শ্বশুড়বাড়ি এসবকিছুর ভিতরেও কত গভীর দুঃখবোধ লুখিয়ে থাকে সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের লেখনীতে তা চোখের সামনে দেখছি বলে মনে হচ্ছিল।

A woman, torn between her marriage and her career, is unable to choose one between the two. She strives hard to find her own identity, other than being just wife and mother. Does she succeed? The book tries to find an answer. The topic of the book is very much relevant in the present context. Suchitra Bhattacharya's writing is lucid, easy-flowing. Though it's not clear to me what message she wished to convey to her readers.

Overall, a light read to enjoy. You'll be disappointed if you expect any kind of message out of this novel. Not bad for just time-pass.

... একটি নারীর নিজের জীবনে তার কি কোনো অধিকার নেই ? স্বামীর অনুগমন করাই কি স্ত্রী'র একমাত্র কর্তব্য ? একটা নিজস্ব জগৎ খোঁজার আকাঙ্ক্ষা কি তাহলে নিছকই সাধ-আহ্লাদ ? শুধু বউ আর মা হয়ে টিকে থাকাতেই কি মেয়েদের অস্তিত্ব ?

এই অসাধারণ উপন্যাসে বারবার উঠে এসেছে এক অভিমানী নারীর ভালোবাসার শাস্তি নিয়ে বেঁচে থাকার মর্মস্পর্শী কাহিনি ।

কিছু বই কেবল প্রশ্ন ছেড়ে যায়, তার উওর হয়তো জীবন শিখিয়ে দেয় ?

I'm young, barely 19
I have not experienced life yet, especially in the society we live in. This book made me question a lot - the answers to which I am yet to find. This book made me concerned to a great extent... the language so simple but the context so heavy.
There is an open end to the novel.
The last line leaves us thinking, questioning, and disappointed.

The plot isn't huge (or is it?)
It's small length compelled me to read through it more and more.

খুব সাধারণ একটা মেয়ের গল্প, তবু সমাজের পুরুষতান্ত্রিক অসমতা কে সুন্দর ভাবে ফুটিয়ে তোলে... review হিসেবে এই বই থেকেই শুধু একটা লাইন রেখে যাব :

"শেষ পর্যন্ত মেয়েরা যদি লড়াই করে করে
কোথাও একটা পৌঁছাতে পারে তখন সবাই তাকে কুর্নিশ করবে, কিন্তু তার আগে পর্যন্ত বাঁধা দেবে প্রাণপণ"

অর্ধেক পড়ে আবারো বন্ধ করলাম। এর আগে কাছের মানুষ বইটি তেও তাই হয়েছিল। হয়তো সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য আমার জন্য নয়।
অত্যন্ত সাধারণ ভাবে লেখা গল্প। অত্যধিক আশেপাশের জিনিসের বর্ণনা। ঠিক পছন্দ হলোনা। গল্পের যা সারমর্ম তা বোঝানোর জন্য আরো সুন্দর করে লেখা যেতে পারত বলে মনে হয়েছে।
