All My Life

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Kari meets Neil Mars. “Neil as in Armstrong and Mars…as in Bruno.” A boy who beats every vampire, werewolf, highlander fantasy Kari has ever had. But she knows she can’t get close to him. Not ever. Because that would mean telling him everything. Coming clean. And Kari can’t bear the idea of changing the way Neil looks at her. Like she’s the only girl in the world. His reverence is something too precious to lose. Perhaps even at the cost of losing him.

But Kari doesn't know why Neil calls her his ‘Angel’ and when she finds out, she realizes what love is all about. Boundless joy, unending longing and a fuckload of heartache.

Hot! If the cover doesn't draw you in the blurb most definitely will. So let me tell you that the story is even better. It's about a girl who goes through an incident that changes her forever. Sounds familiar? However, the stuff that happens to her is not something I've read in anything recent. After that 'incident'...our girl...Kari plods along life and then (cue 'drum roll') enter...Neil. Ladies and gentlemen...I have a new boy toy to fawn over! Get this

"As I lose myself to the beat of the music, my hands trail up his arms to twine around his neck. With his face an inch apart from mine, eyes unwavering, he tracks my each and every move. He dips me, brings me up, holds me close and never lets go. When the song finishes, I don’t know how long we’ve been dancing. I just know that I’ll never be the same again. Can a single dance change someone’s life? Because it certainly feels like it’s just changed mine."

OOoooh! Swwooooon! I'm in love and I'm so going out tonight! This one rocks!

Where to start. This author deals with several important issues. The problem is that she deals with them very superficially and without sufficient real world knowledge. As a result, the is handled incredibly unrealistically for the maximum amount of angst, but not any modern, practical considerations. Even the h's primary problem only pops up when necessary to cause the h to retreat, or be upset, but otherwise fades. And the resolution is dismayingly deus ex machina - not a deep or serious solution, but rather through a cheap and facile soap opera moment.

The story is told entirely through the narrow lens of the self-absorbed heroine. Yes, she has some major issues to handle, but she acts as if no one in the world has as horrible a situation as she does. She is incredibly unaware of anyone else until it is thrust in her face. Maybe this would work if the author were portraying her as a typical, self-involved teenager. The problem is that the author herself doesn't seem to realize how shallow her character is. So there is no basis for why everyone loves her, why she is so wonderful, or why the H falls head over heels for her. The H who is too wonderful for words. He is sweet, sensitive, hot, can cook, polite, protective, and, of course . Can we say, trite?!

This book is just full of cliches. You'd think the h really was an angel and the heavens were arranging everything for her. The boyfriend (/see above). And the friend's father of course happens to be . And the police officer who does something NO POLICE OFFICER WOULD EVER DO!

Also, because the story is entirely from the h's POV, and she's a spoiled teenager, you don't get the full picture. You don't really understand the H's motivations or feelings. It feels like a set up for a book 2 from the H's POV. Except it wouldn't be worth reading. (And don't forget the creepiness of the 23 year old H and the NOT-mature 17 year old h.)

If I hadn't noticed that the author is in her 30's, I would have assumed she's a teenager too. This is a fairy tale for girls with a dash of modern reality - but just a dash, not enough to make any profound impact. Thank goodness it was free, but it wasn't worth my time.

4.5 Stars!!

"It takes ten minutes and thirty seven seconds.
Just ten minutes and thirty seven second to turn my life upside down."

A secret Kari carried along with her for two years. Two. Years. A secret that kept her from living her life the way she deserved to do so. Until she met Neil Mars.

First off, that prologue... it automatically intrigued me. I was not expecting it. At all. It fully spiked my curiosity.

The rest of the book (minus that prologue) was narrated from Kari's point of view and let me just say, I loved that girl!! She was witty, sarcastic, and so funny!! I found myself giggling a lot.

"What if he doesn't want to see me again?! Oh God!! Stop obsessing, or you'll die a withering wrinkled virgin!
All through lunch, high definition images of cobwebs flourishing between my legs keep flashing before my eyes..."

"Neil Mars." I look at him incredulously. "Neil... Mars?!"
"Uh-huh. Neil as in Armstrong and Mars as in Bruno." .... No wonder he tortures his Mom by calling her by her name."

"Angel. He called me angel! Huh. What is he? An alpha male wannabe? A classic western aficionado?

"You know as per mythology, Angels were actually men who were sent down by God as messengers? So when you say Angel, it's like you're calling me a dude." Neil looks at me for a few seconds and then throws his head back and bursts out laughing.

See? She's quite funny! and Neil? Very hot, athletic, swoony, romantic, gentle, and protective of Kari.

"I think... I need..."
"Me," he says firmly and grasps my chin in his hands. He pulls my face up, making me look into his eyes. "You need me, Angel."

"...you'll still always be Angel to me... you don't know what you've done... you've saved me."

"If you keep looking at me like that, we'll need a room."

"Then he does this thing. His fingers start moving on my face, tracing outlines. They trail along my eyebrows, the ridge of my nose, the apple of my cheeks and the line of my jaw. His touch is like feather but his eyes... they blaze and just like that, without saying a single word, he makes me believe."

I honestly loved all the characters in this book. Nalini was just as funny as Kari. I'd love to have her as my best friend any day!!

"Maybe you guys should just find a room and get all these come-hump-me looks over with."

Seriously, this was a very enjoyable book. It had an intriguing plot, great characters, and a yummy hero, so of course it was good! There were moments though, where I felt like the story was being rushed and where there was a lot of telling rather showing. It didn't happen often, but it did happen a couple of times.

Regarding the ending.. rest assured, it's a happy one!! BUT, I have to admit, I didn't absolutely love the Epilogue. Even though it was a happy ending, it was one of those moments that felt a bit rushed.

That all being said.. I recommend this book!!
I'm sure you'll love Neil and Kari.

"He calls me an Angel. But it's he who has been my savior. When my world felt damned he brought me back, gave me hope, made me burn, made me feel so beautifully, insanely... alive."

I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for a review. And I was really hoping to find an indie author I could support. I loved the cover, and I wanted to like what was underneath it, too. I really did. The premise was fresh in that what had happened to the heroine wasn't something I'd read before, but... There's a huge lack of show vs. tell, timeline issues, an over usage of commas and exclamation points, an abundance of inner monologue and general lack of editing which, unfortunately, made for a sloppy read. I think with a good editor (or a few good editors) to tighten up areas that need work, I would probably feel much differently and might be willing to give this another chance. In it's current form, though, it just didn't work for me.

I was sent a copy from the author for an honest review. I have to say that I was really surprised by this book. I have read a few books where a girl was scorned by a guy. This one however got my attention with the prologue. It is quite different from all of them that I have read! I liked Kari's character. She is a snarky girl who works in a tattoo parlor. Even though her Mother does not approve. But, she loves it. If I have learned anything in this world its that if you find a job you love then by God keep doing it! Anyway, it is because of this job that she has some extra cash considering some of it is going to the A-hole Eddie. She also meets Neil here. I really like Neil. He is super yummy! He always is telling Kari that she saved him but, I think he is the one who did the saving. I liked how the story progressed, I had a hard time putting it down. When Kari's secret comes out will it ruin things with Neil? Will she ever be able to have a healthy sexual relationship after her past? Is her life on the road to being destroyed?

I would have to say that Agnas and Nalini are amazing. Agnas would be awesome to have as a mother. She is such a caring person. Nalini is a great friend. Blunt but, we all need that every once and a while. I found her extremely funny and I loved her relationship with her boyfriend. He was also great.

I really enjoyed Neil. The amazing man that rescues Kari on a white horse. He has a few secrets of his own that come out with time. I love that he lets Kari give him a tattoo. It's a very intimate thing. At least it felt like that to me. He also rides a motorcycle which is super sexy. Their romantic scenes are very hot. Like super spicy and I loved them. I didn't really know what to expect given the cover of the book. But, I loved it!

I really enjoyed this book and am glad I go the chance to review it. I would recommend it!! I have no idea if there will be another book in the series but, I was happy with the ending!

Kari has a secret that's been eating at her since the day the encounter occurred. She is trying to move on and live her life as best she can - going to college, getting a job - but she's still haunted by that moment and she doesn't know how much more she can take.

Then she meets Neil, a handsome young man that pushes all her buttons and sets her body on fire. Although she tries to keep her distance and her attraction from Neil, the guy is as persistent as he is gorgeous and little by little she finds herself opening up and falling for him. Only to have her past rear its ugly head and threaten to undo all she has worked so hard to achieve.

Once in a while you get a story that not only entertains you and draws you in, but where the characters get to you and you become emotionally invested in their well being and happiness. All My Life is that kind of story. From the very beginning of the story I was hooked. I enjoyed Kari's voice and the character she portrayed. She was young, prone to make mistakes, but she was also funny and independent with a strong will. I admired that about her and as the story progressed I could see how she developed into a matured, young woman.

Of course, I loved Neil. He was caring, handsome and sexy as hell with that grin of his. But what I truly admired about him was his loyalty to Kari and his mother. I would have loved to read his side of the story, but Rucy Ban did a great job of presenting him to me in a way that let me see bits and pieces of himself so that I could really see him and believe that he was the right man for Kari.

Rucy Ban's writing was packed full of emotions, flirtatious banter and insightful dialog. All these elements combined with a great plot and interesting secondary characters made All My Life a great read for me. Oh and that cover? Awesome!

I received this title from the author in exchange of my honest opinion.

After a tragic first love encounter, Kari has sworn off men. When the gorgeous Neil Mars crashes into her life she is awestruck. The more she gets to know him the more she starts to love him. But if Neil ever discovers Kari secret, will she lose him forever?

This review was difficult to write without a spoiler so I’m going to leave the summary at that. Now I’m going to focus on the characters.

Rucy Ban creates a group of witty, quirky, and wonderfully loyal characters. People you’d love to call friend. She also created a complete bottom feeder antagonist that you couldn’t help but hate. Kari is a naïve yet sweet and compassionate which makes her situation all deplorable. Neil is truly prince charming, the perfect man who comes to her rescue. This is a novella length story, I would have loved to have the story longer with more details which would have removed the few gaps in the storyline. Ultimately, I found All My Life a gritty yet fun, enjoyable read with wounded characters that found the most beautiful love.

Wasn't. What. I. Was. Expecting! Yeah, that was my first reaction after reading this book. Actually, to speak the truth, I should say that most of it wasn't what I was expecting. We all get these preconceived notions that are built on various pre-reading clues we get from things like the title, the genre, the blurb, the cover, etc. I make mention of this because I had certain ideas going into the story that allowed the story to really take me by surprise. Not in a million years did I expect some of the plot twists in the story starting off with what happened to the heroine after she trusts the wrong person and going from there.

The story opens with this bright-eyed girl who is in high school with the world at her feet. She lives with her mom with whom she has a good relationship, she does well in school, she has good friends and now she has a cool guy who just graduated interested in her and her mom even likes him. Life is a dream!

But in one big, naive mistake, life becomes a nightmare. It has been two years and Kari is a whole different person in someways from the girl who let a sleazy guy dupe her and continue to threaten her through blackmail. She hides this dark secret from everyone including her mom. Her break comes from an unexpected direction when she takes a job in the tattoo parlor across the street from her home. There she is mentored by the tattoo artist and becomes friends with the body piercing gal, Nalini. Nalini is outspoken and brash, but she's solid friend material.

One day, into the parlor walks the guy of her dreams, Neil Mars (I know, what a name!), the son of her boss. Well, he's the man of her dreams if she wasn't terrified of letting a guy near her ever again. Neil is just as into her and doesn't even let her freakish behavior that she exhibits when she is near him put him off. They both have hidden pain and they both have a way of brightening a bad day for each other and trusting in each other. Things move forward slowly with them. The blackmailer troubles are still there though. Kari must decide if she can trust Neil with everything and trust in him to still want her when he knows.

The plot to this one had some elements that are typical of many YA/NA novels. Then for every point that is typical, there is an atypical plot piece tossed in to keep it fresh and interesting. This is a character-driven story so it plods along rather slowly and it is told first person so I spent a lot of time in Kari's head listening to her internal monologue. There were a few times that I found it tedious and angsty, but more often than not, she kept my full interest as a narrator of her story. The descriptive language allowed for me to feel things right along with Kari. Even though Neil was a bit more of an enigma since I only saw him through the grid of Kari's thoughts, I couldn't help but absolutely adore him. Kari was skittish and rude at times, but he just hung with her like a champ. His hormones were raging (not that hers weren't- being with Neil was all she thought about much of the time), but he held back and waited for her. Considering what happened to her, that was the best proof that he could be trusted and that he cared for her that he could have given.
There were a few things that niggled me about the story. Now I might be in error, but I'm pretty sure that Kari is seventeen and Neil is twenty-six. She's in college, but she's underage for this relationship. As I pointed out earlier, he took good care of her and her mom is aware of their relationship and approves, but there is a part of me that wished her character had been a couple years older. The relationship would seem more credible (nine years' difference at that time of life is a huge gap) and plus I think I'd be more comfortable about it. I also felt that things rushed in the end and then leaped to the epilogue which was cute and full of promise leaving the future wide open to the imagination.

In the end, I really enjoyed this story and was sorry to see it end. Those who enjoy the New Adult Contemporary Romance niche should most definitely give this one a try.

This is an enjoyable and truly wonderful read. I wish all books I read would be this great and I could give highest ratings left and right.
I was pleasantly surprised to find it so interesting and catchy, as it's rare for me to read a book in a single sitting (one that isn't a short story). I might add that it's 8a.m. right now.

Review:
I feel like I haven't read anything like All My Life in a very long long while. This book practically blew my mind with every chapter. When I was through I had this moment of sadness because I had read it in a single sitting, devouring it in a few hours, and I wished I had more pages to read and bask in the feelings this book oozed out with each one. Really, the summary doesn't stand close to the true story this book reveals, it's a lot more than it sounds like.

Kari, while insecure about anyone finding out her secret (which you will find as original), she's also strong and determined, she's a definite realist (maybe pessmist) and there's nothing that would deter her from keeping her secret and finally being free from the obligations to Eddie. As it happens, she meets Neil, exactly the type of guy she should avoid. But how can you keep cool when he's so considerete and insistant on getting to know Kari, and so absolutely charming? I wish I had one *wink*

How can you not like this book when the main character works at a tattoo parlor and does the best body art, that's fucking badass (!). And she is a natural, guys! I wish I could do it myself...

If I had an actual copy of this book, I would probably rub my face against the cover and hug it real thight. Cause this book, I say, is one that could stand beside Beautiful Disaster and Fallen Too Far. It had me crying, laughing, stressing and having a mental mind blow, I almost got a heart attack when Neil and Kari kissed (!), they kissed!
I loved Kari's relationship with Neil, Nalini, Josiah and Agnas, they were like a huge family- going through bad times together, laughing at silly jokes and keeping together when shit got real. Their conversations were fun to read , they had me desperately wanting this book to never end, so I could hang out with them every fucking day.

I really enjoyed Rucy Ban's writing, she wrote such a profoundly touching and real love story, and delivered it in as little as 160 pages. The plot twists and its non-predictability had me on the edge, the characters were poignant and fun, everything was remarkable and I wouldn't change a thing. This book is a gem and Rucy ahould be proud of it, I hope she writes more of these kind of books.

All My Life is a truly refreshing and different read from the big mass of NA books produced monthly. It's a poignant and profoundly fantastic story of a girl who fights back her demons and finds love in a tattoo parlor. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on Rucy Ban, I believe she has a lot in store for us. If you, my dear reader, are tired of predictable love stories and enjoy NA Contemporary romances, this book is a must read for you. You won't regret it.

All My Life was an incredibly honest, emotional, intense read. After reading the Prologue, I knew this was going to be an interesting and unique story. When I finished the first chapter, I felt like I was holding my breath the entire time, and all I could muster was that bastard!

All My Life is a story of a young girl who falls for a guy who ends up deceiving and hurting her in the worst way. A couple years pass by and the ghost of her past is still hanging on tight and will not let her go no matter what. Will she ever get out of this HELL that is her miserable life? Will she ever be able to trust or love anyone ever again? One glance across a busy street, and she found her answer....

Kari finds her self working at a tattoo shop out of all places, training to be an artist. She always aced her art classes, how hard could it be, right? Oh, how her mother would not approve! While working there she makes great friends and her life seems to be normal for a little bit, until that Friday of every month comes around and she is confronted with her horrible past once again. The light at the end of the tunnel seems so far away until she sets her eyes on the beautifully handsome Neil. It was LUST at first sight for sure! Neil swoops in to her life, buys her the best BLT she has ever eaten, and makes her feel all kinds of sexy and beautiful. It has been SOOO long since she has felt this way. She could actually fall for this wonderful, sexy man! Both of them have secrets, but once they are out in the open, that's when they can really start to trust each other and find something real, something they have never experienced before with another person.

The sexual tension and chemistry between these two characters were my favorite part of the story. That, and also the suspense was killing me since the beginning of All My Life. This little gem of a book surprised me, because after reading the blurb, I wasn't sure what to expect, but since I devoured this in one night, you could say I was delightfully surprised at how fantastic this truly was. The other great thing about this were the other characters involved in Kari and Neil's life, Agnas and Nalini. The story of Agnas, Neil's mother, absolutely broke my heart, and Nalini made me bust a gut laughing so hard with her quick witted remarks and catch phrases. Once again, I love to find a book that makes me go through so many emotions at once. I definately recommend All My Life by Rucy Ban, if only for the fact that this story will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Let me start off with telling you I just Loved this story. It was original and had some turns that I did NOT see coming. It was truly a very attention grabbing book and I am so honored to have gotten the chance to read it and share how much I adored it with you. It deserves the High Ratings that it gets.

This story follows a young woman who has a secret. A secret that horrible and just infuriates and breaks your heart all at once. But she is surviving. She is pushing day to day counting the time till her nightmare is over. This is where we meet Kari. She is enduring this and trying to find a way to live her life to the fullest she can. Enter Neil. Tall, Dark, & Most certainly Handsome. I know, I know it sounds like THAT story, but its really not. Kari may seem like the girl that needs to be saved, but give her a chance. She will surprise the heck out of you.

Neil keeps popping up in her life, and despite how she wants to feel, Kari is extremely attracted to him. ( I mean really, as long as it takes her to realize it I am begging for him to turn my way! Can we say Perfect? ) Slowly but surely Kari starts to lose her will and fall for him. With falling for him she grows closer and he is inevitably exposed to her past. The one she is trying to escape.

This is THAT story. No, not THAT one, the boy save girl yadda yadda yadda. This is the one that Grabs you from the first page and you just can’t seem to put the book down till you find out the ending. Or, at least that is how it was for me. I couldn’t get enough. I feel blessed that Rucy asked me to read it. It was a honor. It was well written and an amazing story in itself. Very original.

The Characters were Extremely lovable in this book as well. They were the type of characters that stay with you for a long time. Even the supporting ones were fully developed and you really got to know them. I felt like a part of the family reading this book. You feel all the emotions they go through in this book. Parts of it I swear I had to stop so I wouldn’t break down in tears for what was happening. In other parts I was literally laughing out loud. On-Lookers more than likely think I belong in treatment somewhere for how many times I yelled at my Ipad. It is that type of a book. You are invested in the characters and their stories. A Truly GREAT read.

To Top it all Off? Only $.99!!! Go & Get it guys!!!

3.5 out of 5 Stars:

Well this story was not what I was expecting. Actually the first 5 pages, I felt so sad for Kari. My heart went for her. I think what happened to happens to a lot of girls. They are just too embarrassed to tell anyone.

What happened to Kari, I could not believe that her mother did not notice a change in her. Her mother just took as truth anything that Kari said. It frustrated me and I guess it held truth that Kari’s mother lived vicariously through her. Her mother only seemed to be “protective” when it was least needed. And it seemed like if someone (specifically a man) smiled their purely whites at her, she was fine.

With Kari, at first I thought she was all over the place with her emotions. She stated that for a year she stayed away from guys and I was worried once Neil came around that she was going to fall into the same web. However, Kari surprised me. The burden and shame she felt about what was going on with Eddie, I can’t imagine.

Neil, well Neil was hot and bad and just yummy and so perfect. I did not know his true intentions at first, but I think I was just as leery as Kari to be with any guy. A little over half way in the book we find out who Neil really is. It was hard for me to believe that no one said anything to Kari before she found out.

I really did not know where the story was going and I love that in a book. What happened in the beginning of this story really upset me. I was seeking revenge and justice immediately.
However, Kari meets Neil and I am so glad their relationship developed at a good pace.

The dialogue at times seemed a little misplaced. However, it did not take away from the story.

It was a nice romance.

I enjoyed that book because of some funny dialogue, and funny thoughts from the h, as well as cute interaction between the H&h.. But if I were to rate it on how well it was written, or the story line, I might go a bit lower. There were gaping holes in the story, and so many unbelievable factors thrown in it was like the author had a list of requirements for making an exciting book and she closed her eyes and pointed. To 10 of them. It wasn't the best book I've read, and I can't even say it was a light easy read b/c some of the issues were super downers.. But I will say there were parts that made me giggle out loud, or made my heart go thumpy thump, and for me that adds a whole lotta extra points.

*Also posted at Oops! I Read A Book Again*

Thank you to Giselle of Xpresso Book Tours and to Rucy Ban for the review copy! Still, this in no way affected my opinions of the novel.

I initially gave this 4 stars, then I changed it to 5 stars and then changed it again to 4 stars. I'm still pondering over my rating because IT IS REALLY GOOD. Do not be turned off by the cover and I know the blurb doesn't gleam that much about the story but HAVE FAITH. I wanna give this novel a new cover that isn't as steamy just so more people will grab it. Though I do get how the cover relates to the story but the novel in itself isn't as racy as the cover might suggest. So anyway, enough with the cover!

Kari has a secret that she's been trying to forget but Eddie won't let her. She tries her best though to move on with her life and she starts working on the tattoo parlor in front of her house. Then she meets Neil Mars and the collective panties all around the world drop. They get to know each other and sparks fly~

Okay, that was such an ineffective and boring plot summary. It's just that, it's really hard to tell you anything because it would be a spoiler. And I'm saying this, you don't want to be spoiled. Do know that the plot to this novel is unique. Are you tired of characters hiding a secret that's really lame or common? In here, Kari's secret is the first I've read and I don't think I've ever encountered a novel with the same set-up as this. So if you want something fresh, get ALL MY LIFE!

As for the characters, OH THE CHARACTERS. <3 Kari was HILARIOUS, as well as Nalini, her mother and even Josiah. She's smart, she goes to college and actually attends classes! This book has some scenes where she goes to classes. Wow. Don't you know how rare that is in New Adult? Everyone is witty, sarcastic, funny and AWESOME. EVERYONE (who isn't evil of course). I love Kari and Nalini's friendship, Kari and her interactions with Agnas, her boss, and how strict yet understanding though passive-aggressive her mom was. I had so much fun reading this because of all the characters. I also adore how Kari second-guesses herself, has insecurities but still, she's not a downer. She's not the woe-is-me kind of girl and I love it!

Of course, there's Neil Mars. Neil Mars is a new addition to my book boyfriends. He's sweet, hot, handsome, SUPER NICE AND KIND, cares for her mother, a gentleman, . He has everything you're looking for and I'm sure he'll be the dream guy of many many girls who'll read this book. Oh and yes, he cooks! And he falls in line for so long just to get you the yummiest BLT in town. Ain't that a keeper?

All My Life tackled A LOT of issues and while being a quick read, nothing (except the bit at the end) felt rushed. Rucy Ban has written characters with depth and small conflict arcs coupled with an overarching one. The conflicts were believable and convincing and you'll certainly get invested in Kari's life and her relationship with Neil. Side characters also get some of their own stories and it was such an amazing feat because aside from the ending, the pacing was great. Every scene was pertinent to the plot, giving the novel such a satisfying quality to it. It delved on family, blackmail, sickness and fame among others. Topics you wouldn't see jammed together but Rucy Ban has successfully made it work.

Rucy Ban also wrote such beautiful scenes and her imagery while fun to read, resonates. It reads true, sounds true and feels true. I found myself nodding at a lot of lines, similies and metaphors. So many sweet lines I'm sure people on Tumblr will love to make into graphics. Here's a kinda funny excerpt but just as true.

I think that's why people often compare love to drugs. It's like a perpetually unfurling, growing yearning. The more you taste it, the more you crave it...wait a second...taste?! Oh my God! My pasta!

Case in point! She compares love to drugs and uses words such as "unfurling". I love it. But that leads to Kari remembering how she's cooking some pasta and that it's probably overcooked by now. Don't our thoughts just flow like that? I also like that about how All My Life was written because we can totally read about Kari's thoughts and we can see her thought process. Rucy Ban injects some musings and deep thoughts into the scenes and ends it in a fun way which makes All My Life not too serious that you'll just cringe at how serious it takes itself.

All My Life is a must-read for all new adult fans and for anyone who wants a fresh romance novel with equal parts swoon and steam. I had such a great time reading this as it was engaging and enjoyable. Rucy Ban, I am certainly excited for your future novels!

First I should say that the cover is a bit racy compared to what actually takes place within the pages of the book. It more talk than action which I'm totally fine with.

I tried not to use too many spoilers and especially didn't want to give away the major crux of Kari's story, so the reader can learn that for themselves.

Kari is in a predicament that does happen to young people a lot in real life. They find themselves trapped in a difficult situation and believe that their either at fault or they have no one to help them get out of it. They see their situation as hopeless and are probably embarrassed. One thing Kari had was a loving mother she could go to for help and support. But Kari thought her mother was already too overwhelmed with her recent divorce and decided to deal with it on her own.

Kari was young and naive and was clearly being taken advantage of. She did not realize that the young man, Eddie was clearly breaking the law and she has grounds for reporting his intimidation's. I'm not sure what a good title for Eddie would be but I will use Sociopath. Before they're found out, Sociopaths are always loved by all and Eddie was no exception. He even had the good looks so Kari probably didn't have any chance of avoiding his charms.

I liked Kari's relationship with her mother, it wasn't perfect but her mother was very honest and open with Kari about life. It just goes to show that you cannot completely prepare you children for every aspect of growing pains and teach them how to deal with the trials they might face especially the exploitation from the users and abusers out there.

I keep thinking that maybe Kari's mom should have instilled in her no matter what you can come to me with anything. Or maybe Kari should have been taught that having sex with a guy because she was worried he might leave her if she doesn't is not the way to go. But then I feel bad because in no way what happened to Kari was her fault or for that matter her mother's.

No surprise Kari developed trust issues and became introverted. Kari's run in the Eddie happened really early in the story so I didn't get to see her personality but she did remark that she was more outgoing before. Later Kari made some friends and reluctantly decided to trust a really sweet guy who became her boyfriend and a fun side of her emerged due to these new relationships. I liked her good-natured ribbing of Neil and Nalini. I also had some laughs at her ramblings and eccentric reactions to embarrassing moments which led to more embarrassing moments.

Kari had very powerful people in her life and she was so clueless about the power and 'fame' of her friends. I thought that was so cute and it shows how unaware she was about the world outside. I think most of this had to do with the spirit crushing experience she had to face right at her entry into adulthood. She figuratively locked herself away from life. I kept wishing she would tell her mother but I was so happy she met the people she did.

This story might have been about the exploitation of Kari by Eddie but within this coming of age story we find a sweet love story and how life can place good people in your life who are there for you when you most need them. I would have loved to learn more about the legal issues Kari and her friends faced and maybe more about Neil and his mother Agnas. There were obviously some past issues there besides her current health issues. I loved Nalini and thought she was the perfect friend to come into Kari's life and at the right time, both her and Agnas actually.

All My Life captured reality in this compelling story of the pains of growing up, persevering through difficult times and how good it is to have supporting friends and family who got your back.

Review~Rosette (Minor Spoilers)

First off, I commend the author for bringing to the surface a very serious issue that continues to be on the rise, and that is revenge porn. People who post videos and pictures of their ex-partners as a way of seeking revenge is an act nothing short of reprehensible. The more this serious subject is brought to the public forum, the better it is for the victims, which can then bring about more laws against this type of exploitation. Although in this book, it was more for extortion than revenge.

This is the author’s first book and many kudos to her for taking the chance at publishing it. But by taking that chance, an author leaves herself open to criticism. Hopefully, in my case, constructive criticism. To start off, the synopsis was a bit confusing. With the mention of vampire and werewolf, I had to read it a second time to make sure that it was not a paranormal book. I think it would have been much better had the author limit her attempts at flippancy in the book’s description. Also, fuckload in the sentence didn’t seem appropriate in the context of the paragraph. Yes, this character had this awful occurrence happen to her, and I get that the author wanted to express her vehemence against the act; but as a reader, I was not yet invested in the character. So seeing fuckload in the synopsis really didn’t seem suitable. Mind you I have no qualms against the expletive; it just wasn’t warranted.

Moving forward, as I read the book, I couldn’t quite seem to connect with the main protagonist, Kari. She seemed whiny at times, and I felt as if I were listening to the ramblings of an irritating teenager throughout the book. Overuse of italicized words and exclamation points from page to page became redundant and incredibly annoying. Too many fragmented sentences and the awkward transition from one sentence to the next made it difficult to follow the story. I wanted to connect with the character, I really did. But it just wasn’t there for me.

I was upset with myself because I couldn’t connect and empathize with Kari, even though this character went through such a traumatic experience. But that’s the thing, the story didn’t flow as if she went through something so traumatic. The event was only one year in passing, and she denounces all men with fervor yet she becomes completely enamored by her male counterpart, Neil, so quickly. The story just didn’t seem realistic to me. There was just too much internal monologue. It made it very confusing for me to follow the story. The back and forth conversations she was having with herself seemed random and convoluted. I really had a hard time reading it. The book could have also used a good editor.

What I did love was the cover. It was very beautiful, and I was very impressed at the author’s artwork.

A copy of this book was provided for this honest review.

There comes a point in your life when you just have to hit back. Because if you don't, you know you'll lose an essential part of yourself.

Seventeen year old Kari carries around a secret. She's been carrying that burden around since she was sixteen and it's impossible to move past when it keeps rearing it's ugly head. It ripped her heart and her ability to trust to shreds. Especially when it comes to the opposite sex. When Kari meets Neil Mars she can't help the attraction that she feels. But she won't allow herself to get involved. She couldn't possibly let Neil in on her past. But Neil isn't easily deterred.

Just watching him laugh and I know. I'm in extreme danger of falling hard and fast for this boy. This boy whom I've met just moments ago. This boy who I know absolutely nothing about!

Oh, how much did I love Neil. Sexy, confident, self assured, caring, loving, thoughtful... I could go on and on. Does Kari really stand a chance? How can her heart not let him in and fall in love!! I would have loved to get inside his head. To experience exactly what he was feeling as he was falling for Kari. Because he fell pretty quickly and even though we were experiencing everything through Kari's voice, it was Neil who sold it to me.

I found Kari to be a bit of a contradiction. Sometimes she came across as being way beyond her seventeen years and then there were other times when she seemed exactly like the seventeen year old girl she was supposed to be. I suppose that could come about due to the trauma she suffered and the growing up she had to do in the face of that trauma. I just didn't feel for the most part that she came across as seventeen.

All My Life shows exactly how easily a person's feelings can be taken advantage of. But it also shows how strong the heart is and how with determination and the right people around we can overcome the traumas in life.

3.75/5 Stars.

Book recommended for die-hard YA somewhat-realistic Romance fans.
Blurb:
17 year old Kari was taken advantage of a year ago, since then she's been living life on a knifes edge. Kari attends college (as the youngest in her class) and takes up a job as a tattoo artist in a tattoo and piercing salon called 'The Prick'. After working there for a while she meets her boss's son, Neil. Neil is hot, rides a motorbike and likes dancing... Neil makes her believe there are good guys after all.

Why is it somewhat-realistic? Well for a start she's a 17 year old tattoo artist. Neil is a fan of dance. Neil is 26, and this doesn't seem a problem. Things just seemed to come out of the blue and were a little far fetched at times. There was the confusing first chapter, which was probably not needed. And the book switched from a YA romantic humour to an angsty teen book every so often. I also think it should have a more appropriate title and cover, (the saucy cover does not fit a YA book).

Why I liked it? There were some silly LOL moments for me, there was fun and a gentle romance. The supporting characters were fun, Kari was also, but Neil was a little bit boring for me. I really don't think it's for everyone.

“Never make eye contact with a stranger when you're having a churro.”
“What?” I scrunch my face at Nalini who's taken it upon herself to educate me in the ways for the world.
“And it applies to a banana as well.”

“Boys are like candy.” she suddenly says.
I grin “Really, Mom? That's your advice? Boys are like candy. What's that? Forrest Gump on teens?”

Writing style: 7/10
Humour: 7/10
Characters: 6/10
Romance: 8/10
Ending: 6/10

My star ratings:
1* Complete trash
2* Waste of time really, but I carried on for some reason
3* Half decent, usually down to personal preferences
4* Could read this again, only a little thing is missing, maybe more humour or romance etc...
5* Would read this again and again, unique story, adore this author

Kari is a young 16 year old schoolgirl who likes to keep herself to herself.

Whilst she’s out walking home from school she meet the elusive Eddie. Now Eddie seems to be a bit of a movie star at her school, always giving presentations and talk sessions to young kids. He comes off as a respectable elder, little do we know he is a serious SLEAZEBALL

We see Eddie’s actions as he seduces young Kari and eventually sleeps with this young “Virgin”, bear in mind he’s like 18-19.

Kari is on top of the world right now, that is until Eddie drops a bombshell…….He video tapped the whole thing!

We are then fast forwarded 2 years in the future and we learn just how much of a sleazeball Eddie actually is.

He demands money from Kari to keep his mouth shut.

This ghost of her past is still hanging on tight and will not let her go no matter what.

In swoops her saving grace “Neil Mars” As a reader I fell in love this character immediately! I mean how Rucy describes Neil in the book is HOT and you’ll want him to swoop you off your feet and rescue you!

The sexual tension between Neil & Kari throughout this book is awesome, I freaking loved it.

As you can imagine though Kari tries her best to elude Neil in every way.

She’s closed herself off from men, but for some reason Neil has gotten through her barriers, and it scares her.

Kari is a broken, fragile girl who needs to be loved the way a young girl should be loved, and there’s no one better then Mr Neil Mars.

Rucy Ban’s writing was packed full of emotions & flirtatious banter between the young love couple.

This book is Sexy, fun and passionate.

I honestly can’t wait to read the second installment “Wear You Down”, which is expected to be released November 2013

When young Kari first sees Neil, she has no idea who he is. She spots him across the street from the tattoo shop she has started working at and he is making out with some girl in blue high heels. Kari finds herself staring and quickly nicknames him the “Mad Kisser”. She comes to find out that he is her boss’ son but little does she know that he will turn her world upside down.

Neil is instantly attracted to Kari and asks her out after she finishes giving him a tattoo. Kari views herself as broken and troubled and feels like her life is ruined because of a foolish mistake that now haunts her. She tells Neil that she does not date. This does not deter Neil at all. He is sweet, kind, generous, and oddly intuitive about Kari.

“This guy. This. Guy. He’s going to break my heart.”

As their relationship blooms Kari invites Neil to meet her mom. It is this night she learns a secret about him and when we also learn that he is 26…this threw me off a little because Kari is only 17. I know that age is only a number but he is much older, has a fabulous career, and is caring for his sick mother. It seems like so much for this supposedly broken girl to handle. Over the course of what is about a week these two fall madly in love with each other, change who they are, and one is willing to give up everything for the other.

The story was sweet and I enjoyed reading it. Personally I couldn’t get past the whole age thing for some reason. I did like that they story wrapped up at the end so we know what happens for them.

A fun summer book with a (mostly) happy ending. What I liked most is the main character’s voice. Kari is the ultimate teenager who is mature at certain times and childlike and naïve at others. She goes from being self-conscious and even self-centered to developing awareness of others and being more equipped to solve problems, her own and those of other people. The present tense that the author uses works great for this character, allowing for events to unfold in real time without too many chances for reflection and analysis. Kari’s life is too full and too busy to reflect on any single event for too long, and the choice of the present tense narrative emphasizes that trait of her character.

I enjoyed the author’s sense of humor, mostly portrayed through Kari’s thoughts and comments. The romance aspect felt very YA, just like the main character herself: overwhelming, all-encompassing, and thrilling for Kari.

Romance aside, Kari is faced with serious (and realistic) problems that teens her age and younger could face in today’s technology-centered world, but she manages to overcome them with her own determination, with help from her friends, and with a number of lucky coincidences.

If you are looking for a dark, deep, tragic YA story, this book is not for you. However, if you want to spend some time with a group of quirky characters and watch them overcome life’s various challenges, then pick up this novel. It’s a quick read and a great escape from everyday life.

I made in about 75 pages into this and even though I was more than halfway done, I could not read another page of Kari's ridiculous dialogue. I know she's 17, but she's one of the most immature characters I've ever come across. So. Many. Exclamation. Points!!!! Interjections such as: "Christ!" and my personal least facorite, "JHEEZUS!" No...I just can't anymore.

And of course there's the insta-lust between Kari and the guy, Neil. He calls her, for no reason, Angel. ANGEL. It came across as very corny to me.

If there were a sex tape floating around that contained me, you can damn well BET that I would not be paying blackmail money to the dude to released it! She gives some excuses as to why in the beginning, but they don't make much sense. My first thought? If someone released a sex tape where the girl was 16 years old, isn't that CHILD PORNOGRAPHY? I dunno. Maybe all reasoning has gone out the window here.

To make a long story short, this is not a good addition to the new adult genre at all. Stay away.

**I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

For a debut novel, Rucy Ban did a fantastic job of writing this book. She created a great cast of characters that complimented each other & dialogue that flowed. Its packed with emotion, ranging from shock (quite a few WTF moments)to fear, to excitement and of course love.

Kari had a pretty bad experience the first time she fell in love with a boy & it still follows her... Literally.
She tries to move on with her life but it proves to be difficult when her past is blackmailing her.

Then she meets Neil - a sexy, muscular guy who happens to be the son of her new boss.

At first things start out slow, Kari is scared that Neil will discover her secret & leave, while Neil is afraid to let anyone know why he came back to town.

This was a sweet read with lots of quirky banter, angst & a touch of smexy.

**Highly Recommended**

This book is great. Kari is just wonderful, she is so naive and funny, until she trusted the wrong guy. Eddie is just a disgusting little asshole and I would've killed him myself. I was really happy when she found that job and she discovered how talented she is...and of course her boss' son..so hot and so nice. She is not willing to trust another guy, especially a really hot one, but he proves her wrong ans she realize that he is serious, she is his angel and he wants to take care of her. So romantic!
