Good lord. Everyone in this book is MISERABLE. And written in such a way to excuse infidelity, or poor patient care, or just being a shitty person and a shitty provider. The tactical street lessons sprinkled throughout are very useful and it has some great notions of how to represent yourself, your department and your profession. And it probably was different back in the day. But as a novel its very morbid and dark. A sudden last minute arc of redemption seems quickly written to be just that, ending the book on a happy note. Magically is partnered with a person to make him better, after spending a whole chapter bemoaning who is is, and resolving that question in a few paragraphs or less. Again, great street sense, poor writing
Having worked the medic trucks for years in the inner city and developing severe PTSD I found this full of raw emotion and honest depiction of a career in EMS. Written from the heart. Loaned it out somewhere along the way but don't know where :( Can't wait to read again!!!
I'm just about to graduate from Paramedic school, and my instructor gave me this book. It's the true story of a green Paramedic in the city of Denver learning the ropes of EMS. The book was published 25 years ago, and the author wrote it based on his experiences 10 years before that. Every new paramedic needs to read this book! It's raw, gritty, down and dirty, funny, happy, tragic. There are so many pearls of wisdom contained in these 19 chapters. I need to re read it and highlight and underline portions of it. I have no idea about the career I've gotten myself into, but I am so excited to see what it brings.
