2016:
Reread through a weird twist. Finished it this time. And my sentiments remain the same. This was utter rubbish. It was so bad it was painful. The Native American grandmother "good hair" cliché was especially disgusting.
Having read a few books by this author, I must say that a couple are good but the rest are embarrassingly horrendous. They evoke the same disgust with IRR and make me want to take a very long break from the genre. King's writing is so formulaic, trite, and amateurish. So yeah, really bad taste in my mouth after this and a determination to find a new genre.
More on this book itself: gawd, this protagonist is weak and excuses all manner of ills in men. Marrying and loving her pseudo rapist is not romantic. Being formerly involved with a man who isn't involved with her and calls her his "greatest asset" evinces a total lack of self esteem and does endear me to her character. I am so tired of stupid women in romance books, lightning quick "I love you's", and poor development, all telling no showing, and cardboard fantasy heroes.
Finding good romance books --especially IRR -- has become akin to finding a needle in a haystack. It's tiresome.
2013:
Shit.
DNF @ 52%.
Massive amount of skimming.
It's official. I am completely done with this genre.
