This was a good book. An unbelievable story ... I am a little bit skeptical about all of his adventures - but, if all of them are true, it's wow :o.
Papillon it's an incredible person. I was impressed that he kept his words, integrity and determination no matter the situations he got in. It's incredible how much people will do if they see you as an honourable and kind person.
At first I was reading the book - like, hmmm, oke..I don't think it's for me. But after ~70 pages I couldn't let it down from my hands. I am waiting forward to read the second volume of this part, to see what he will do next.

I have taken this as a work of fiction rather than a memoir, as there are a lot of debates over the truthfulness of some of the stories remembered by Charriere. The fact is that he was imprisoned several years in French Guyana and for me it matters less if the story is exactly what he did there or taken from several other inmates.

So, as a work of fiction, I greatly appreciated the message the author tried to transmit. Indeed the French punitive system at that time resembled the Russian Gulag, which in my opinion was the most repressive and brutal penitentiary system. Also I agree that freedom is the best asset a human can have and the entire first volume is a hymn for liberty.

The main downside is the language of the book. I understand that Charriere was not necessarily a literate man, but this is not an excuse and I am forced to compare him with the other authors I have read.

All in all, the book is interesting and I am waiting for the second volume, to find out the continuation of Papillon adventures.

ಲಾಕ್ಡೌನ್ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ಇನ್ನೂ ಮೂರು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಪ್ಯಾಪಿಲಾನ್ ಸೀರೀಸ್.

ನಾನು ಪ್ಯಾಪಿಲಾನ್ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಇನ್ನೂ ನೋಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೇನಾಯಿತು ಅದರ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಅನುವಾದ ಓದಿರೋ ಖುಷಿ. ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಕೂಡ ನಾನೊಂದು ಅನುವಾದ ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವ ಲಕ್ಷಣ ಕಂಡಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಷ್ಟು ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ ಈ ಸಾಹಸಗಾಥೆ. ಇದರ ಮುಂದೆ ಅಲ್ಚಮಿಸ್ಟ್ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಂತೆ ಕಂಡಿತು. ನಿಜ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ನಾನು ಓದಿರೋ ಅತ್ತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಸಾಹಸಮಯ ಕಥೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಇದೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸತ್ತೆ. ಇದು ನಿಜವಾದ ಕಥೆ ಅನ್ನೋದೇ ನಂಬಲಾರದಷ್ಟು ಸಾಹಸಮಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅವರ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕವೂ ಒಂದು ಮೈಲಿಗಲ್ಲು. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ ಅವರ ಕೊಡುಗೆನೇ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ. ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಲು ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಆ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರು.

ದ್ವೇಷ ಅಸೂಯೆ ಸೇಡು ಇದರಿಂದ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ತಾನೇ ಉಪಯೋಗ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ಯಾಪಿ ಎಂದೇ ಕೆರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಈ ಮಹಾ ಸಾಹಸಗಾರ ತನ್ನ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಜೈಲಿಂದ ಪರಾರಿಯಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ಅವನು ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಫಲ ಯತ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಪರಾರಿಯಾದಾಗ ಅವನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗೊಂದಲ, ನಡುನಡುವೆ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಸಿಗುವ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದಂತೆ ಇದೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಬಗೆ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ರೋಮಾಂಚನವೇ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಸ್ನೇಹದಿಂದ ಜಗವನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಈ ಕಥೆ ಒತ್ತಿ ಒತ್ತಿ ಸಾರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಹಿನ್ನುಡಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅವರ ನೆನಪು ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ . ನಾನು ಪಾಠ ಮಾಡುವ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಿದೆ ಇವರು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಎಷ್ಟಿದೆ ಅಂತ. ಮಿಲ್ಲೇನಿಯಂ ಸೀರೀಸ್ ಎನ್ನುವ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸರಣಿಯನ್ನು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗೇ ತಲಪಿಸಬೇಕೆನ್ನುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಇನ್ನೂ ತೆರೆ ಮರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡಿದೆ ಇದೆ.

ನಾವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಯುದ್ಧಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಇಸವಿಯನ್ನು ಪಠ್ಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ್ದೆವು. ಆದರೆ ಮಹಾಯುದ್ಧ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ ಮೆರೆದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕಿಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನುವುದೇ ನಂಗೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ. ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರೆ ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕವೇ ಬರೆದಿಡಬಹುದು.

ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಕುತೂಹಲ ಇರಬೇಕು. ತನಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗೊತ್ತಿದೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಈ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಅಹಂ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಲಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ದೂರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಲಿಯುವ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರಲ್ಲೂ ಬರಲಿ ಎಂಬುದೇ ನನ್ನ ಆಶಯ.

ಹೆನ್ರಿ ಶರಾರೆ ಆಲಿಯಾಸ್ ಪ್ಯಾಪಿಲಾನ್ ನ ಸಾಹಸಗಾಥೆ. ಸುಳ್ಳು ಕೊಲೆಯ ಆರೋಪದ ಮೇಲೆ ಜೀವಾವಧಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ತಳ್ಳಲ್ಪಟ್ಟು, ಭೀಕರ ಜೈಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದಶಕಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹೋರಾಟ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಪ್ಯಾಪಿ, ಆತನ ಕೆಚ್ಚೆದೆಯ ಹೋರಾಟ, ಹಲವಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಏಕಾಂತ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ, ಬ್ಲಾಕ್ ಹೋಲ್ ನಂತಹ ನರಕದ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ, ಹಲವಾರು ಪಲಾಯನದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ, ತಂತ್ರಗಾರಿಕೆ, ವೈಫಲ್ಯ, ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಮೈಲಿಗಳ ತೇಲುವ ತೆಪ್ಪದ ಯಾನ, ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ ಪಲಾಯನಗೊಂಡಾಗಲೂ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಸೆಣಸಾಟ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಜೈಲು, ಸೋಲು, ಭ್ರಷ್ಟ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಹತ್ತು ಹಲವು ರೀತಿಯ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ವಿವರಗಳಿವೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಪುಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರೌರ್ಯದ ಹಿಂಸೆಯ ವಿಜೃಂಭಣೆಯಿದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಇವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಕಥಾ ನಾಯಕ ಪ್ಯಾಪಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಜೈಲು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಕಂಡ, ಕೇಳಿದ, ನೋಡಿದ, ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ ಸತ್ಯ ಕಥೆಗಳೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಕಟ್ಟುಕತೆಗಳೂ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ ರೋಚಕ ಅನುಭವ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಂದು ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂಸೆ, ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ಓದಲೂ ತಡೆಯೊಡ್ಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಏನೂ ತಪ್ಪಿಲ್ಲದ ಹೆನ್ರಿ ದಶಕಗಳಿಗೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸವೆಯಬೇಕಾಯಿತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಸರಣಿಯ ಮೂರೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಬೇಕು.
ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ಪ್ಯಾಪಿಯನ್ನು ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಬಂಡೆಯಾಗಿಸಿದ್ದವೆಂದರೆ ಭಾವನೆಗಳು, ನೋವು, ಸಾವು, ಹಸಿವು, ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ಇದ್ಯಾವುದೂ ಗಣನೆಗೆ ಬರದಂತೆ. ಸರಣಿಯ ಮೂರು ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ಒಬ್ಬನಿಗೇ ಬರುವುದುಂಟೇ ಎನ್ನುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುವುದು, ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ದೌರ್ಭಾಗ್ಯವಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂದನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಲೇಖಕರು ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಪ್ಯಾಪಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕರುಣೆ ಬರುವಂತೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತೀ ಬಾರಿ ಏಟು ಬಿದ್ದಾಗಲೂ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ಯಾಪಿ ಮೈ ಕೊಡವಿ ನಿಂತ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
