Quite an entertaining short story about a final push to defeat an army of rebels in control of a citys main surface to orbit defence laser.
The problem is that the rebels are well dug in. the Laser keeps orbiting ships from levelling the city and so the valiant soldiers of the imperial guard must take it down. How hard could that be? Think WW1 trench warfare with lots and lots of causalities at every attempt to gain a few metres of ground.
The story takes place at the arrival of three super heavy tanks, Stormlords. The perfect vehicles for breaking dug in enemies. and we follow the main character as he leads one of the units in an attempt to finally end the siege. As nothing ever goes the way it should he also have an imperial commissar stalking him, looking for any sign of incompetence or cowardice and just itching to execute him.

As I said, quite an interesting read with good, human, characters and lots of sci-fi militaristic action.

The Book ties in nicely with Banebladet, another book by Guy Haley featuring a super heavy battletank, without actually using the characters from that book as more than cameos.

While I do recall that I was entertained by this story, I can't recall too many details beyond the fact that it was at most loosely tied to the work "Baneblade" in that the regiment here came from the same world as that in Baneblade. This lack of a distinct impression cost "Stormlord" a star. I still remember enough to recommend it as a quick read, but not a lot past that.
