A World Elsewhere and Other Unlikely Stories

Rate this book
In A World Elsewhere and Other Unlikely Stories, the author has created a variety of stories to appeal to every reader. He takes the reader on a journey of different experiences and discoveries, from why we might find SLOW/ARAF written on Welsh roads to how, in the title story, a sheepdog led a young man to find freedom and maturity. The cover photograph, provided by Barry Benson, brings this delightful story to life.

What is unique about this book is the combination of threads of Welsh tradition running through this text, along with a strong historical influence. It is also clear that the author’s background and life experience shine through in the witty and charming narratives.

Just as striking as the diversity of themes in this collection is how George shapes each character with care, and approaches the situations with both wit and humanity. Universal emotions of frustration, loneliness and fear - not to mention love in all its forms - are dealt with sensitively, and readers will find themselves pulled into George’s Unlikely Stories.

George Learmonth was Keeper of Conservation at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, a post he held for twenty years. He is co-author of a forthcoming book on the world-famous Sultanganj Buddha. He lives in Powys, Wales, where he is involved with the local writers group, and is co-editor and producer of their magazine.

George’s royalties will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity whose work he greatly admires.
