Positives: Well planned, great plots and sub plots and written in a simple language.

Negatives: A little refining and editing could have improved it a lot and made the good story it has shine out.

The Verdict: Mehek Bassi in her debue novel shows a lot of promise in years to come. She has stories to be told and a good editorial team can bring out the best in her. I am sure she will entertain us and continue to thrill us with her amazing stories. 3 stars on 5.

Well Well Well I have spent an entire restless day waiting for a much anticipated novel by a 19 year old girl. :) :)

If u ask me to sum up my wait then i would sum up like this " It was worth the wait".

She got me chained to my bed for an entire duration of 3 hours i guess. My parents were worried that their son has gone on a reading spree since yesterday nite and gobbled up 3 novels in the span of 24 hours. :P :P.. Lets not talk about the other two. I'll only talk about chained.

For a 19 year old to write such stuff its amazing. Right from the cover to the introduction it all was like a journey of a superstar. I was just a mesmerized fan following and stalking Shiya & Arjun's life. Its wonderfully written. I dont know how to use very heavy words like an author. Pardon me for that but it was mind boggling. :)

I never get emotional when it comes to reading books with sad parts but this 19 year old girl namely Mehek made some drop of tears slip out of my eyes with her bold and emotional writing. You have to pay me for this by signing my book in person whenever u get the chance. :)

Well its all a co-incidence I bumped into Mehek on goodreads while she rated some other book and as striking I found her pic she struck the right chord with her book too. :) :)...

Well sometimes u dont bump by chance into someone. The book is still lying besides my table and everytime I have gazed at its cover till now Shiya's character just rolls into my mind.

Mehek I loved it to the core.Every word and all the poems took me into a trance.
You have penned it down with utmost care and covered all the slightest details in such a beautiful manner.

The poem in the start and end are just amazing. I'll try to memorize them. :P :P..

I know I have to review on flipkart too and after posting this I'll be going there to do the same coz they dont allow people to copy paste their own stuff. :P :P

But hats off to u girl. U made my time worth by writing such a wonderful piece of fiction.

I'll sign off.. People are yet to receive and read their copies so let me leave the suspense in wraps. :)

THUMBS UP YOUNG WRITER AND I WISH TO READ ANOTHER OF UR CREATIONS SOON. :) :)..

5 OUT OF 5.

By Mehek Bassi. Grade A+

All of nineteen years, Mehek Bassi has come out with a sensitive novel that the youth of today can identify with. ‘Chained’ aptly portrays the restless aspirations, burning desires and possessive love of modern day youngsters. While some may perceive the story setting to be a normal part of modern living, Mehek describes the darker side of it all where one is pursued and tormented for wanting to dream, love and aspire for more. Mehek in this novel brings to light the fact that while wanting something in life is in our hands, bringing it to a happy all izz well kind of ending is certainly not!

The protagonists of the novel are Shiya Mathur and Arjun Singh who step into college and consequently into each other’s lives in filmy ishtyle. What follows is an intense story about stormy emotions, soaring ambitions and wild passions that go haywire.

The plot of the story revolves around Shiya who is an aspiring singer and spends the best part of her life working hard to fulfill her dream. This she does amidst the indifferent behavior of her step mother, younger stepsister and a father who is far away unable to help her face her problems or even share life with her. Her hard work, sacrifice and focused goals eventually pay off amidst all odds but the price she pays for it all is deadly, something unimaginable even to the reader!

What makes ‘Chained’ interesting is that every time you think that a conflict is solved, that a solution is in sight, the author steps into accelerator mode and you are caught once again in another storm. ‘Chained’ is basically about the chains of name, fame, status and unchained emotion that tightly grasp the minds and hearts of people caught in a fast moving and materialistic world where the goal is in sight but the journey isn’t, where the destination is pursued with determination but the road to the goal as well as the emotions are unequipped!

(extract)
“Arjun…why am I in this mess? Why me? Can’t I be free? Can’t everything just end? In this ruckus of life, nothing had I gained, I just want freedom now, no more do I want to be chained…”

Shiya’s conflict between her family, love life and her professional life is aptly described, something which many a youngster faces today. Arjun’s inability to handle his overpowering and possessive love for Shiya is too much for him to bear. The mourning of his grief even when all is not over as yet is sensitively portrayed. The author seems to live in the hearts of the two protagonists as they edge on in life, sometimes, tripping over self-made problems, sometimes, helplessly caught as victims of unrelenting circumstance. The narrative is inviting. The chapters written date-wise, making it easier for the reader to delve into the past and then jump back into the present lives of the characters. Flashbacking into time, the love story of a passionate couple is made to go through innumerable twists and turns, testing patience, love and loyalty.

The denouement is unexpected. Good work by a teenage author. Looking forward to reading more stuff like this.

Detailed review at http://bit.ly/11Qs9Zu

The story has a lot many spheres to it that keeps the reader glued till the end. The best part of the book is that it just doesn't concentrate on love and mushy romance, there's a lot of suspense and thrill which is generally not found in books these day. One can easily call this book a complete package. There are a lot of beautiful and thoughtful poems in the book that are going to sway your heart away. The story is crisp and pacy, not even one point would come where you'd feel like stopping. Romantic scenes are undoubtedly written very well so all you die hard romantics, just pick up the book and get started and even if you aren't a romance lover, you are not going to get disappointed because there's a lot more to the book than romance. Scene description and narration is amazingly great, language usage is again good, you wouldn't have to pick a dictionary but then you will not have to read the monotonous writing, proper good sophisticated english is what you are going to get. I am reading a book by NotionPress for the first time and I must say, their editing is strong however there are 1-2 typing errors and paper quality is good as well.
And as for Mehek, girl! you have done a fabulous job. Keep writing and wishing you all the very best for 'Chained' and I am pretty sure this book is going to do amazingly well.

My review: http://wp.me/p2J8yh-2mK

I enjoyed the debut fiction of Mehek very much. I feel the plot she has taken on has promise, and she does well to close as many questions that the story throws up. Her narration is direct, she uses simple English that is very easy to understand and it is not heavy on the mind at all. Sit with it for 4 or 5 hours and you can finish it. If her intent was to show true love is not bound by time, she succeeds in doing so. The story though in the romance genre is not mushy. However, on the downside, this being her debut fiction, the story is presented to us as-is. So I could find a lot of places that could use editing, or if presented in another way read better. A mood-setting type narration would have been much more helpful perhaps than the direct narration in some places, esp. given the character is in love. A few suggestions I have given, which may help her in her future novels. A wonderful debut from a new storyteller.

Review: 'Chained' unchains young Mehek from the shackles of teenage naivety and sees her transformation from a girl to a woman. This debut novel by the 19-year old Mehek Bassi is her medium of emancipation, her own expression of freedom. It is as much about the author as it is about Shiya, the protagonist of near about the same age.

The novel is no watershed moment in Indian literature. By no means, it is any great piece of work. But it is a specimen of a complete work , touching upon several genres simultaneously, and is a stark indication of the birth of a new writing culture in the country. The fact that a small town teenage girl could publish a full-length novel of a readable, even engaging, standard is something which should be appreciated, if not outright celebrated....

Story:

The novel starts with the sad and depressing condition of one of the protagonists, Arjun, and then it moves quickly into flashback. The story revolves around Shiya, a super-talented singer, and her usual college life, her friends, family, and soon-to-be boyfriend Arjun. As the narrative progresses, the reader encounters some shocking revelations based around her family life, due to which, in addition with her ever-increasing singer fan base compel her to reside in Bombay and work with superstar Rehan.

As Shiya's fame grows, she and Arjun start having some tough time together due to various insecurities. Other characters like Rehan's gossip reporter gf Tanya, Shiya's sister Mansha, their father Shekhar and her past, famous poet Razia also play important role in taking the story forward.

Will Arjun and Shiya ever remain united? What's the mysterious past of Razia? Who is the murderer among them? Do the protagonists remain Chained to their fate?! To know answers to such questions, grab and read the book.

Review Analysis:

The book is just an average run-of-the-mill story. Laced with superficial narrative, confusing emotional scenes and naive storytelling, it never offers a feel of a quality read. The dialogues in any particular scene unfold in quite a melodramatic and capricious manner; never settling fully into poise, thus lacking finesse. It could have better been packed and published as a novella in order to offer a good quality read.

A Composite of Two Extremities of Human - Life and Death

Chained Can You Escape Fate? is a composite of two extremities of human - life and death - life comes in the form of love, where we find 3 love stories in this debut entry by Mehek Bassi. Death comes in the form of 4 murders. The story is about Shiya and Arjun, and Shiya's family members. Shiya belongs to a rich family with her father being a successful and always busy businessman. Her mother is equally busy in her parties and social meetings.

Shiya desires to become an establishes singer when she begins her college life but finds herself very lonely in her family. She gets attracted to Arjun and starts loving him. The book has a lot of questions arising from time to time as you go through it and gradually there would be astonishing answers to those questions.

Overall an interesting read.

Nice story line and character description was good too but the biggest drawback was the paragraph spacing and no space between two words that made the reading difficult. The poems were nice I liked the poem in the end of the book.

All in all its a nice book.
