Roomies

Kirsten was off on her own for the first time ever. Free from her overbearing religious mom for the first time ever. Able to be her true self for the first time ever.

She always had to hide who she was back home. Her mom would call her a sinner. The mean girls would make her life miserable. Any other closeted women would thank her for taking the heat.

Now she can be whoever she wants. The only problem? She has no idea who she wanted to be, other than knowing she wanted to get with a girl asap!

Amanda was on her own again, and that's how she liked it. The last thing she needed was complications after her disaster of a love life freshman year.

She never hid who she was. Screw anyone who called her a sinner. She'd made out with enough mean girls they left her alone because they knew she'd make them miserable if they didn't.

She was always free and did exactly what she wanted. This year that meant no drama, which was a problem since drama walked right into her room on move-in day in the form of a hot but sheltered roommate who seems to be hiding one big secret!

The sheltered small town girl living her true life for the first time ever. The sophisticated sophomore who thinks she knows it all and doesn't have time for a crush. They're about to be thrown together in a wild adventure where neither gets what they want, but they both just might get what they need!

And if anyone asks? Well they're just roomies, right?

Roomies is an 85,000 word lesbian romance that explores the intersection between fun and drama as two roommates become so much more!

I was really enjoying this story of a small town midwestern woman Kirsten going off to Uni and getting away from her horrid mother and small town morals and having the more worldly Amanda as her roommate who slowly shows her college life. Both likeable characters, good dialogue, good topics. But then at around 80%, the entire storyline and good vibe ends, the whole thing falls flat, their relationship and the storyline all go belly up. Sad, as it had such promise as a first time love story. 2.5 stars.

YA vibes

I struggled with this book. The gist of the storyline is cute and has potential, but the execution felt a bit strained. The sprinkle of drama was a nice though. I do think it could benefit from having someone edit it thoroughly to help it flow better. The communication between characters felt rather stiff too, I'm not sure if that was intended or not. The little comments about them not seeing certain things happen in the future is kinda funny, but I do think it was overdone a bit.... Overall, I'd say 3.5 stars.

Too much…

Apparently, every time someone gets kissed, they lose track of time. I’m serious. Every single time. They are all very polite in this book, though. They’re always saying thank you very much. Like: I really don’t wanna do that, thank you very much. I don’t know if that’s a regional thing from the Midwest, I lived in Missouri for a while, and it’s not a thing there, or if it’s something the author is just used to saying. But, it seem to happen quite a bit. Nothing to turn me off, reading another one of her stories, though. I really wouldn’t mind seeing a continuation of the story. It would be kind of cool to see how the mother behaves when she finds out.

Roomies is a college roommate romance with some parental homophobia and past relationship complications providing context. The story is set about twenty years ago after the original Napster but before the Internet really took off. The author makes a reasonable attempt at reflecting the then-current tech landscape. Kirsten and Amanda make a cute, albeit slightly awkward, couple. The supporting cast is thin and populated with largely stock characters. There are a few melodramatic moments and low levels of angst but overall, a pleasant read with a happy for now ending.

Difficult to enjoy

So this book started out well and I wanted to enjoy it but there were several issues. One being the really on the nose jpkes. So this book is set somewhere in the early 2000s judging by the references, but they kept making jokes about modern day culture and it felt like a huge 4th wall break which kinda jarred me out of any immersion. Add to that the rather... Non ending that finished the book and I'll be honest I don't think it's worth reading.
