Dani Walker has spent five years trying to forget about Cherri Red and the summer that changed her life.
That is until she picks up a magazine and Cherri’s face stares out at her, together with a list of tour dates. The temptation is too strong, and Dani has never been able to withstand temptation. When she plucks up the courage and finds herself standing in front of Cherri in the back lot of a run down club in Austin, and when Cherri looks up and meets her eyes, they both know five years is nothing, not for what they feel for each other.
And meeting is just the start of a roller coaster ride for both of them.
Tess Harding started writing fiction at the age of 9, but had to wait until she was 24 before being published professionally. That was a long time ago, and somewhere along the way real life demanded her attention and she drifted away from writing until recently. Tess writes erotic fiction which, she sincerely believes, is different. Many works under that banner consist of graphic and extreme sex. Tess believes that true eroticism only comes from character and storyline. Therefore, her fiction may take a while to get going, but it will get you there in the end and, it can be argued, will result in greater satisfaction. Tess Harding lives with her partner close to Hereford, near the border between England and Wales, where myth is still strong and civilization a thin veneer. Raised on the East Coast of America, she spends most of her time at her home looking out over green fields and a river. She also travels when she can, particularly loving France and Italy, as well as making forays back to the land of her birth to visit friends and relatives.
We return five years after the events in Summer Secret (Cherri Red #1). Dani Walker is leading a simple, luxurious life on the cliff-side of Dana Point with her camp buddy and now boyfriend, Jack. Jack has taken over his father's boating sales business and Dani is a leisure and famous photographer. However, everything isn't as crystal clear as it seems. Dani glances Cherri on the cover of a rock magazine and she pines over the loss of a deep relationship. Where is Cherri now and why hasn't she called?
Cherri Red is an upcoming debut artist in a country-rock band. Her first album is out and she has become an overnight celebrity. With tour stops all over the country and being a fan favorite, Cherri has a lot on her plate. In Summer Secret we left off with Cherri engaging in some unfavorable acts to try and make her way into the world with no support. However, the sequel does not divulge Cherri's secrets or just how far she went to breakthrough. Hopefully we will learn Cherri's story in the final installment of this trilogy.
The plot quickly progresses as Dani lands a corportate photography job and lands near a city where Cherri's tour stops. Despite her reservations, Dani heads off the the concert to spy on her long lost love. Cherri and Dani reunite and Dani is given a backstage pass (and not only to the concert). Letting go of her hurt and past betrayal does have its consequences as Dani's feelings have returned stronger than ever for Cherri.
The plot of this book also centers around the trial of Greg. Dani and Cherri are both called as witnesses to the event which took place at the end of book one. Here Dani and Cherri's trysts are put on public blast and each learn how to move forward now that their sexuality is public knowledge.
I enjoyed the character development in this book as Dani and Cherri are both dynamic characters and have matured since book one. Dani discovers a box hidden by her father and its contents lead Dani to stop feeling shame for her proclivities and the courage to pursue what SHE wants. Cherri has also grown from an attention-seeking, overly sexed young adult to an alluring and charismatic woman. She treats her fans well and shows great restraint when in the public eye.
I struggled with what to rate this book because I have enjoyed the adventures of both Dani and Cherri but compared to the first book this one just didn't deliver as I had hoped. The major problem for me was a lack of consistency. Some events from the last book are portrayed differently in the character's memories and I was confused a great deal at times. For example, a client of Dani's is called Crystal and then three pages later her name is suddenly Candy with no mention of a nickname. As a reader this was very frustrating.Overall, it was a good read and I will still pick up the final book to see if Dani and Cherri have a happily ever after.
I liked the way the story unfolds, I liked the characterization, and I really enjoyed the interplay between Dani and Cherri. I think in a lot of ways, you really get the feeling of truth in how hard being young, and different, or at least, the feeling of being different is.
Falling has a much different feel than Summer Secret, I definitely enjoyed this one. If you liked Summer Secret, or The Beach House, you'll like Falling!
While reading this, I had to keep reminding myself that this is set in the mid nineties and folks weren't as open about same sex couples as they are now (most of the time). I kind of forgot about the whole Greg thing from the last book but it was nice to take a break from all the sex.
Dani really bothered me this time around. She confused me, she both know what she wanted and didn't know what she wanted. You can't have both. And while she clearly prefers women she has no issues with using her sexuality to get her way. And it's lovely that all these women are so comfortable being naked around each other (and I have no problem being naked) but really, it's too much and frankly I don't think this happens. (it could do but maybe I am moving in the wrong circles). And finally, if Dani is so hell bent on having Cherri in her life why is trying to sleep with every other woman in the planet? I really thought she has tickets on herself that every woman she meets must want to sleep with her. It was great to see her turned down a few times.
In the end, nothing was really resolved. Not sure if there is another, not sure if I will read it if there is...
On a brief sidebar.. in chapter 14 Crystal suddenly becomes Candy not sure why but I had to go back and check if I missed her being nicknamed, I didn't. Maybe it was an editing thing.
