I wrote a super long review and then accidentally deleted it I'm gonna CRYYYYYY but I'll also try to rewrite it all

Overall I thought this was really good! It's so hard to find stuff for manga readers in this age group so I really appreciate that this book exists.

Some things I liked about it:

- Visually, this book is gorgeous. The color scheme is vibrant, I like the page layouts and the art is really beautiful.
- The interviews were FANTASTIC. I seriously loved them. The choices of who to talk to were excellent and I thought the questions were great too. These were such a great way to talk to kids about manga careers and to educate and inspire. REALLY loved that Shirahama's answers were both in English and Japanese.
- I really liked the educational parts about the history and creation of anime/manga. I loved that it also included info on fandom experiences, going to cons, and also tips for first time attendees. I very much appreciated the recommendation to find fun ways to attend with your parents, I thought that was a really important safety tip for kids this age.
- the quizzes were very cute, I would've loved doing those as a kid.

some minor nitpicks:
- horimiya and komi aren't shoujo, and I wish more had been put into the shoujo section of the book. In my experience, it's the most readily available and accessible genre for elementary age kids so I could've lived without the seinen section in exchange for more shoujo tbh
- Personally... I definitely would not put Gunbuster on for an 8 year old lmao...

Overall though, I thought this was great for both kids and clueless adults with a manga-loving child. I'd recommend looking into each of the suggestions and seeing if they're right for the specific kid in your life first (I don't think the average child will really *get* Nana until they're older, for example, so I personally would steer them elsewhere until they're more like middle school age) but they're a good starting point.

Finally..... OBAN STAR RACERS MENTIONED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *extremely loud air horn sounds*

Kid's Guide to Anime & Manga: Thoughts

A Kid's Guide to Anime & Manga: Exploring the History of Japanese Animation and Comics by Samuel Sattin, with Patrick Macias (Contributor), and Illustrated by, utomaru

This book is recent, from 2023. It is full of information that hardcore fans would find interesting. For someone, like myself, who is simply dipping his toes into the world of Anime and Manga, it is overwhelming. That does not mean that it is not useful, but I suggest that you focus on areas that interest you.
For instance, words, and their history fascinate me. Etymology is the study of the origin of words. It includes the way word meanings have changed over time.

Thank you Goodreads, for A Kid's Guide to Anime & Manga. This book is an enjoyable, easy to read summary of Japanese Manga and Anime. The tone of the entire book is encouraging the reader to try new titles, and get involved in the anime manga community by joining reading groups, attending conventions, cosplay, and creating their own manga. They briefly touch on many topics including from a history of manga to how it is now made and sold across the world. There are even interviews with industry insiders. They mention many titles in many categories. Interesting information for new and old manga and anime fans.

Lots of great information for young adult fans of anime and manga. The authors give concise historic context (just enough), with interviews of current popular anime authors and illustrators. For kids interested in becoming animators, these interviews offer tidbits of advice for future anime creators. Well designed, the book has a really appealing cover and while it's single-colored (pink!) illustrations of animated art, each double-page spread is presented in visual appeal. Many great suggested "reads" and "views" also.

I ran out of time to read this the whole way through. But I know that most of my students 3rd grade and up would adore this book! It defines anime/manga, talks about the history, cosplay, and conventions. Such an awesome resource for one of the most popular topics among school agers! Bonus-fun quizzes and illustrations

This guide to anime and manga provides a foundation for kids who are looking to know just a little bit more about manga and anime be it vocabulary, history, names, and PLENTY of recommendations.

It's pleasing to read and view and spends the time delivering content, not a song-and-dance about the topic. It delivers where it's important. Helpful for kids (and the hesitant adult).

Did really read every word, but looked at each page and will be reading some sections in greater depth.

Simple language, well explained, knowledgeable and well researched.

This was a very cute primer on anime, manga, and its intersection within Japanese culture. The art was adorable and inclusive throughout the chapters. Overall, this is a great book for those looking for a Christmas gift or stocking stuffer for the kids in their lives!

Notes: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
