Young alias Bernard Foong is, first and foremost, a sensitivist. He finds nuance in everything. To experience the world he inhabits is an adventure which is mystical, childlike and refreshing. He has a rare ability to create beauty in a unique fashion. His palettes have been material, paint, words and human experiences.

Bernard Foong (designer) – A brief history

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the age of 8, he was assisting his aunt and cousin, learning the art of sewing and fabrics/colors matching. He attended an exclusive private boarding school in the United Kingdom before obtaining his Diploma in Fashion Design at the Harrow College of Art & Technology in London, England. He went on to complete his Master of Design at the Royal College of Art & Design, London, England. During his college years he won several international fashion awards and was already retailing bridal and evening dresses to several well known department stores in England. Liberty of London, Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols to name a few that carried his designs. His Royal College of Art graduation wedding/evening wear collection was sold to Liberty of London and displayed in their store windows for the entire month of June that year.

For four years, he worked for Liberty’s bridal department as their in-house designer until a trip to Hong Kong, while working on a freelance project for ‘Bird’s’(casual wear) company, he was recruited by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as their Fashion professor for the next 6 years. During his stay in Hong Kong, he freelanced for numerous fashion companies. From designing casual wear, swimwear, lingerie, and fur garments, men’s wear, bridal and evening fashions to accessories (bags, shoes, head-wear). He also participated and organized numerous fashion shows, events, functions, and presentations in the Asia Pacific region.

Working for Keys Far East Hong Kong as chief lingerie designer - travelling extensively to the United States, he was soon recruited as an Associate Fashion Design/Illustration Professor to the University of Wisconsin, Madison and also lectured at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design for a couple of years.

Foong was then appointed as the Fashion Development Manager by an established department store – Parkson Grand (22 stores in Malaysia and one in Shanghai, China). Producing under the label, Natural Life by Bernard Foong, he designed casual-wear collections for the Parkson Grand’s flagship store in Kuala Lumpur. After a couple of years later, he was invited by the Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore to join their design school to establish a Fashion Design department. For two years, he assisted several founding members of the design school - working on the fashion department’s teaching curriculum.

The Fitzgerald Theatre Department, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Oahu, Hawaii awarded a full scholarship for Foong to complete his second Master of Art in Theatre Costuming. Now a resident on the Island of Maui, he has assisted many charity organizations in their fund raising events with his extravagant fashion and performance shows/presentations. In 2005, he and his partner, Mr. Walter Jay Bissett opened Fire Dragon Bistro Orient & Design Shop. He also designs costumes/fashions for numerous theatrical productions in Hawaii and abroad.

Appointed as chief lingerie designer for Cerie International Limited – Hong Kong, his lingerie designs can be found in major department stores in Canada and the United Kingdom.

He showcased the BERNARD FOONG R-T-W collections and BERNARD FOONG @ Modern Classic Ltd. (an established – Hong Kong bridal & evening wear company) collections in Hong Kong. His 2008 & 2009 bridal/evening/bridal lingerie fashion show, “Grace” & “Coming Up Roses” were premiered at Hong Kong Fashion Week in July 2007 and January 2008 respectively at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center, garnering positive interest in many Asian press reviews, including a China n

An Exotic~Erotic Life Described in Brilliant Rich Detail

Close your eyes and imagine a world vibrant with color, a banquet for the senses, exotic, erotic, a sumptuous indulgence fulfilling your every desire. Imagine it draped in beauty: beautiful fabrics, opulent jewelry, romantic locales from around the world where whatever you desire can be yours if you are a beautiful boy. Do that and you have entered the world of Bernard Foong who has chronicled his life in a series of books titled A Harem Boy’s Saga, an other-worldly lavish diary of a young boy indoctrinated into the world of a underground sexual society. As Westerners, we will be shocked by the revelations, the peek behind the secret veils, which would normally strike us as inappropriate, bordering abusive but quickly striped of our predisposed notions, we slip luxuriously into the world of lavish opulence and a love story of exciting proportions which is the author’s life. A very accomplished and talented designer, Mr. Foong uses his complete design palette to describe his life in elegant, flowing words richly and artistically strung together like opulent jewels to describe the canvas of his life in rich, vibrant, magnificent palatable color. Oh, to have lived such a life. The sheer read is a spectacular indulgence you dare not deny yourself.

"A Harem Boy's Saga II: Unbridled," is the second in the "A Harem Boy's Saga" Series of memoirs by Young (alias Bernard Tristan Foong). My copy is a softcover edition of 546 pages.

I happily enjoyed reading "Initiation," the first in this series, and was very happy with the second in this series of memoirs, "Unbridled."

I especially enjoyed this one, as it continued to relate Young's adventures with his academic studies, specifically his fashion studies, by meeting various fashion authorities and "legends" in the world of fashion design. In addition, I enjoyed the details about the opportunities he manifested to not only design various clothes and costumes, thereby furthering his studies.

Of course, anyone who loves to travel, especially internationally, would especially enjoy this second in this series, as trips to and from the Middle East to Vienna, Rome and other destinations, including Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States, would be a satisfying read for anyone who loves to travel, or, for that matter, anyone who rarely travels, but loves reading about other countries and their respective cultures.

On a personal note, I especially love reading about how Young learns, early and often, the difference between love, particularly romantic love and sex.

Of course, the sex that Young experiences personally, as well as the sex he observes, courtesy of his massively curious nature, is delightfully seasoned throughout the book. PLEASE NOTE: this is not a book of erotica; this book details the, well, details of Young's life, as he continues his studies with Daltonbury Hall, the E. R. O. S. group, the Sekham, and more.

ALL of Young's life is explored in this book, as well as "Initiation:" the professional, the personal, the academic, the romantic and the sexual.

I immensely enjoyed reading about Young, Andy, and Oscar, Young's second "Big Brother." The three of them begin what is referred to in the book as a "triplet relationship," although most people know such a relationship as either a "throuple" or "triad."

There is a common and erroneous theme in the minds of many that open relationships and polyamorous relationships are centered around sex. The "triplet" relationship between Young, Andy and Oscar proves nothing could be further from that so-called truth.

Truly, I look forward to continuing this series with the third volume, "Debauchery."

Young continues his Harem Boy's Saga memoirs in this second book in the series. Having now become acquainted with the author, and learning more about him, this book is even more fascinating than the first. Traveling the globe during this second experience with a middle eastern family in pursuit of helping Aziz with a project, it is amazing the number of people they meet. At one point in Vegas they meet the Rat Pack. In LA they meet Mia Farrow, Vidal Sasson, and a bevy of young actors at a pool party that included the likes of Tab Hunter and numerous others. The book continues the relationship with Andy, but this time Young intersperses modern day attempts at finding his former Big Brother and lover. They are able to communicate after 42 years of absence. It is during one of those exchanges that we learn the names of the schools, households and others have been changed based on their oath to never reveal these secrets. It is a fascinating yet somewhat long read. The language is adult oriented and graphic in numerous places. But it would be hard to write these memoirs without it so being. Excellent memoir materials told by a person who is in great command of the English language.

I didn't know what to expect from this book, and I admit I was pleasantly surprised. It reads very much like a journal chronicling the adventures of Young, our protagonist. As he shares memories from his time in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States during the heady days of the mid-sixties -- and his time as a harem boy/exchange student among the wealthy and sexually adventurous -- we get a fascinating peek at his perceptions of the people and places of the time. Interwoven with this narrative is Young's experiences of the modern day, as he uses social media to reach out and attempt to reconnect with Andy, his long-lost love. I enjoyed this visit with the author, both past and present. There is also a good dose of history and cultural information, which I enjoyed. It felt very much like hearing the recollections of a charming friend.

Unbridled continues the bold and sensual journey begun in Initiation, immersing readers in a world of erotic discovery, cultural contrast, and emotional depth. Young recounts his experiences in a second Arab household with elegant, candid prose that balances provocative content with heartfelt intimacy. The storyline weaves through his role in a controversial photographic project—Sacred Sex in Sacred Places—while also exploring the tender, complex relationships he shares with his two chaperones. This memoir is not merely about eroticism; it is about identity, self-exploration, and the power of connection. Young invites the reader to reflect on the boundaries of love, art, and desire, making Unbridled a daring yet reflective addition to his autobiographical saga.

This book is eloquently written and I wish I could have grabbed the first one before starting in on this wonderful read. Young’s life is one of those mesmerising timelines that you really don’t believe is real, but honestly is. The fantastical journey of a young man who gets to experience everything and anything many people only dream of is just wonderful, and I secretly envy him, but in a good way.

The transitions between the present writing and memory are smooth and seamless. You can tell the difference in time, but other than that it fits very well with the past narrative. You can tell it's a stroll down memory lane while he looks to reconnect with his former lover.

The views he has on sexuality mirror that of my own. The fact that sex is a sacred act, a link between the mortal and divine is very well articulated in this book and it resonated with me at a very core level. This comes through as Young and his party work on a project called “Sacred Sex in Sacred Places”

This book also opens up some of the lesser known aspects of a few cultures, that’s as much as I want to say without spoilers, but Young’s education delves into the hidden aspects of the cultures he was exposed to, that certain things aren’t as cut and dry as the authors of the tomes of history would like you to think. This definitely causes the reader to do a little bit of soul searching as to what one has been told is culturally appropriate regarding love and sex.

The story of Young’s life journey really captivated me. He’s led an amazing life, rich in culture, love and experience.
I was so desperate to see if he reconnected with his valet Andy after all these years, that I kept sneaking off to read the book when I should have been working (I’m terrible I know).

Despite the subject matter there is also an innocence and naivety to this book, and I think this comes from Young himself, and not just the way he writes. It’s there in the way he tells you about some of the bad things that have happened (although thankfully, there were very few). But it appears most of all in the way he talks about love, especially with Andy. Even though there were multiple people involved in his experiences, I feel that the love he had with his valet was pure.

It really has opened my eyes to the different going’s on in the world and of how the other half live. I thought it may have shocked me, or ‘turned me off’. Instead I found my emotions riding a pleasant even keel throughout, as Young expertly takes you from past to present with ease.

I didn’t read book one, but I’m going to read that next, along with book three, as I have to see how things progress with the people that Young made contact with.
A captivating read.

While the Initiation introduced us to Young and memorable characters that made a huge impact on his life and had me emotionally invested in the characters and the direction of the story, this sequel, Unbridled, the next book in the memoir series titled A Harem Boy's Saga, brings us to a whole new level of exploration and depth.

A delightful treat for the senses, the reader switches between the past and the present. Decadent and emotionally wrenching at times, coupled with surprises and page-turning angst at other times, this is another winner that has me waiting for the rest of these books to be released and has moved Young up to one of my favorite authors.

A Must Read for anyone interested in the Middle East, boy culture, gay pride, coming of age, and coming into one's own more than once.

I learned so much through this book about Malaysian culture, secret societies in Europe, and the habits and proclivities of Princes and Hadrahs in the United Arab Emirates! From the beginning, when Young's mother embarks on the Queen Mary, before his birth, to the boys' school on an island off of the west coast of England, I was drawn into worlds of culture, affluence, and traditions, and then I was invited to peek underneath it all. And I learned of yet another culture. A sub culture. Young's eye misses nothing. The details he unfurls so fabulously make this a classic.

What an amazing journey! Young travels around Europe, the USA, and the Middle East, and to be fair, that’s when things get really interesting.

Young has a talent for descriptive writing and you really feel like you are inside the author’s head as you journey along with him. The harem scenes are unparalleled, and it’s fascinating to be a fly on the wall as he serves in an Arab household.

The troubled love affair between himself and his chaperone also makes for exciting reading.

Wealth, power, greed, sex, love… this book has it all. Simply an incredible read.

"This book tells of exotic places and locations, Venice, Paris, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, the Middle East and more, so that the reader is instantly transported to a different time and place. As much as the book is an adventure it also tells of the love between Young and his Valet. The portrayal of their love and trust with one another brought tears to my eyes. Though there are sexual scenes in the book; the story is mostly about self-discovery, love and the potential loss we all feel when we dare to live life to the fullest."

Exotic and Captivating
It was so hard for me to conceive of someone living their life like the main character of this book, and it gave me such a sense of wanderlust as I read. There are so many compelling memories and experiences packed into his remarkable journey through life, and so many places visited. All of it is told in vivid detail and with a beautiful, heartfelt and sentimental air. This is the story of the adventures you wish you could have had, the things you wish you could have done, and the places you wish you could have gone.

Unbridled is the second installment in a series recalling the adventurous life of the author, Bernard Foong (aka Young). In this installment Young's search for his lover/soulmate, Andy, whom he has not heard from in 40 years since their parting, sets off vivid memories of their life together. Number 2 of 7 in the series

Young goes abroad to get a broad education that is only available to a few students through a "scholarship" program that combines adventure, travel, hands-on experience, and opportunities to meet a wide variety of cultures and people. The 3 month sessions are sponsored with all expenses paid, plus gifts for college costs, while escorted by a big brother for protection and supervision. Although there are plenty of opportunities for sex, it is part of the education process. The stories seem too good to be real, but in the foggy world of ancient customs, religion, royalty, and tacit government authority, a secret training program for select boys could exist without question. The insights into the adult world would be very helpful as the boys age into that environment, but without the trusted guidance at their side.
