I obtained my B.A. in History with a Minor in American Studies in May of 2012. I love reading, writing, history, and video games. Writing is my passion that I will never give up on whether I'm successful or not. I write my stories because I have all of these ideas in my head that I need to get down on paper as coherent, complete stories.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my rating. If you liked "Twilight" and don't mind horrendous grammar/punctuation, you'll love this book. We start out with Kayla, whose name we don't learn for quite a few pages, just chilling in the woods by her school. She tells us she's an artist instead of the author showing she is (aka "I took out my sketch book and flipped through my previous sketches." or something of that nature.)She obviously has some sort of tree fetish. "It was a tree, but just not any tree; it was the photogenic tree I was looking for." <---direct quote. I had stopped there, wondering if I was the only person in my family that was slightly creeped out by her fascination with trees, so I started to read it to my family. I sat by one of my brothers, who was just as appalled by the grammatical and punctuation errors as I was. So, back to the book: she's drawing this tree when she hears a noise. She "reluctantly" looks to the source of the noise and it's this guy in a suit that "stuck out among the trees." How does a BLACK suit stand out among trees? I live in the woods, and the only suit that would stand out is the yellow suit that the guy in "Gangnam Style" wore. Her mind automatically goes to him being a murderer, so, of course, she chases him. "Stop running I just want to talk." ...no punctuation in there, huh? Not a period...no? Well, okay. So she goes back home and totally forgets about him while she puts on her jammies and turns off her lamp. When she goes to school the next day, she goes through the same woods she was terrified of being in because there might have been a murderer there. When she gets to school, someone opens the door for her, which I thought was super polite. Nope, she runs away and obsesses about him for almost the entirety of her first class because she thought that there was a chance that the guy that opened the door was the guy from the woods. She, however, concluded that they couldn't be the same because they were wearing different clothes! Her history teacher asks her whats wrong, she runs away from him, and goes to her next class, where, you guessed it, the guy that opened her door sat by her. When the class ends, he almost knocks over his chair because he leaves so quickly. Kayla goes through the woods again and finds *shocked face* the guy, who runs away from her again. She chases him AGAIN and follows him to a rocky bluff. He climbs up it, but she didn't follow because he looked like he had "climbed it a million times before as he NEW where to place his hands and feet." "NEW"??!!! What.The.Fuck. She goes home and "pulled out my copy of A Doll's House and started to skim over it. I had read it years ago so I already knew what it was about." If that wasn't an almost direct quote from "Twilight" with a different book, I don't know what it is. When she turns off the lamp and goes into a paragraph on how she got it that didn't add to the story at all, a knock comes from her window. At this point, I said "I swear, if it's the guy, I'm going to throw this kindle." Guess what? IT WAS HIM! And she opened the window for him even though "fear instantly consumed me." NO! You don't open a window for a stranger who you think was a murderer earlier in the book! I don't care if you're curious!Sociopaths get you to trust them and then murder you! Basically after that part, I was just like I couldn't keep going. So, if you don't mind a "Twilight" knock-off/like "Twilight" book/can get past cringe worthy grammatical errors, then you might like this book.
First off I want to know why scholastic hasn't pick this book up it's so amazing I love it. Ok now for the review. Obtain is a book about a young girl name Kyla Rose (beautiful name)who one day goes into the woods and see's a beautiful tree. She starts sketching it and sees a boy running in a suit she chases him but with no luck catches him. She wonders who this boy was and the next day at school he's there just starring at her, and then later that night she hears taps at her window and she sees the boy. He introductions himself as Sean and tells her about Timepiece. They go into this cave where Sean pulls out this beautiful key with a red ribbon and they get engulfed in a bubble like substance and escape to Timepiece. I love this book it was awesome I fell in love with the characters and i wanted to go to Timepiece my self. The book was so dramatic I loved the details they drew a beautiful picture in my head it was filled with magic and friendship and learning about trust. I recommend this book to anyone who is a Harry Potter fan awhile. Defiantly go pick this book up I can't wait for the next one.
I received this book in exchange for a review. I have to say this book pleasantly surprised me. The story line was engaging and kept me guessing. The story starts out with Kyla Rose discovering a path in the woods behind her school and that is where she sees a guy that she doesn't recognize. This encounter leads the boy named Sean to invite her to a strange new world. I don't want to give too much away, but I was expecting some standard love trinagle or something like that that is usually in books with a female main character, but that is not the case in this book at all. I would certainly recommend this book and am glad I got this book. I will be keeping an eye on this author. The only negative thing I can say is that there were a few gramatical errors, but that is to be expected since it is a self published novel. You can't expect one person to get everything perfect. But a few gramatical errors don't take away from the wonderful story that is full of twists and turns.
Obtain tells the story of an ordinary girl named Kyla Rose who discovers a mysterious boy running through the trees in her new hometown. With much hesitation, Kyla follows the boy into the trees until she discovers what he is looking for: a new Key Keeper for an alternate world called Timepiece. Kyla is then faced with the decision to continue her normal life or live in Timepiece as a Key Keeper forever and fight off the dark magic that’s attempting to tear Timepiece apart.
The thing with self-published books is that they’re always either a hit or miss. Obtain had a lot of potential with the plot itself, however, the actual writing was very basic. With the help of an editor this book would be a decent read for upper-elementary school kids. There was action from the very beginning, but the characters were very flat throughout the story.
*Note: I received this book for free as part of the Epic Reads Giveaway
This was a struggle to read as it felt very rough draft and lacked a good editing. There's a good story in there somewhere if you can get past the poor grammar. The characters and ideas seemed structured and planned, they just need a bit more polishing and a few touch ups; a few layers would help as well. Overall the book isn't terrible if you overlook the grammar issues.
This book was an amazing, entertaining, intriguing, and never bore adventure and took me to a world I want to visit. I can't wait for the next book in this series. Five stars.
