The Major of Casterbridge was originally my least favourite Hardy novel. The first chapter where Henchard SELLS HIS WIFE AND CHILD - I mean how drunk do you have to be to do that? - set me against him for the rest of the novel. However, if you can get over that (it's difficult but on the second reading I did a little) then Henchard's redemption is great to watch. Henchard is always teetering on the edge of falling back to his life as a brute, but watching his struggle is truly inspiring and I can now understand why, for many, this is Hardy's best novel.
