This wee guide covers the life and times of one of Scotland's most tragic and enigmatic monarchs. Fifty places to visit are described, with many maps and photos.
Bought this in Edinburgh Castle and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made in Scotland. It presents a biographical history without fuss and added drama, but purely important facts to know about Mary.
Also, just a sidenote, since reading this brought me back to Edinburgh, is that what I really like about Edinburgh/Scotland in general is the fact that all the historical paces are compacted together close enough that it seems very simple to follow the geographical aspects of the history of Scotland. Dare I say my visit to Scotland and the books I’ve brought back have made Mary Queen of Scots the figure of British History I know best.
I bought this wee guide while visiting Edinburgh Castle this past May. Mary Queen of Scots story is complex and she moved and traveled a great deal. This guide sums up every aspect of her life clearly. I also enjoyed all of the photos of the Scottish castles, and the visitors guide at the end of the book. I intend to order more “Wee Guides”!
Picked up this book after visiting Stirling Castle. Sadly, I didn't read it until after I returned from my Scottish vacation. I would've stopped by a few additional spots if I had read it prior to reading! It's an easy read that shares the highlights of Mary's story. It also includes maps and an updated list of relevant places to visit.
I always thought I knew everything there was to know about Mary and her life. There were some minor historical aspects I did not know, mainly treaties and some noble folks who were either Pro-French of Pro-English. I did entertain me, but I would not suggest it for people, who are not interested in the study of history.
I bought this book in a little book store (John Knox's House) in Edinburgh. It was the perfect little biography to read on my travels through Scotland. Its a great overview of Mary Stuart's life and definitely made me want to read more about her.
Having just visited Scotland and heard so much about Mary, Queen of Scots, I needed a little refresher on her life. This small book provided a great overview of her younger years, failed marriages, and the political and religious times that influenced her early death.
This Wee Guide is chock-full of information on Mary, Queen of Scots as well as the politics and people surrounding her. I was motivated to ask questions and determine where I want to go next in my historical reading. A great starting point.
Very enjoyable and comprehensible; concise but in-depth information was provided when relevant. Lots of visual aids too: paintings, maps, and family trees.
Though a 40,000 ft flyover that required me to google names and places often, this briefest of bios compels me to read a comprehensive history of Mary and her cousin Elizabeth.
