It was so good to have Sarah & Marco back!!
Stella Knightley has done it again. Having loved reading The Girl Behind The Mask, this sequel was just as good if not better.
I enjoy the fact that Stella writes a story within a story. The mix of new & old worlds is fascinating. You get 2 stories for the price of 1!!
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Contemporary Romance/Erotica/Historical any of those really...I also recommend you read it any time, I do suggest when you have some spare time as I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait for The Girl Behind The Curtain now!!

The 'Hidden Women' trilogy is essentially a romance. The books follow the main character, a historian named Sarah, and whilst she's living her life she's researching interesting women lost to history. The chapters alternate between Sarah's life and that of diary entries from the different women she's researching. In this book she was studying Augustine du Vert, a "wicked" French courtesan. But Augustine's memoir tells of a very different woman than what history has portrayed her as. Augustine's and Remi's story was my favourite thing about this book. It was a tale of heartbreaking love. "There can never be true hatred without there first having been true love," she writes and by the end of the book you discover why.
What I didn't particularly like... This is a romance story spanning three books, so tell me how the author can write an entire book without the love interests... communicating? Ok, so there was some interaction. But I didn't particular like that there wasn't much of Marco Donato in the entire first half of the book (discounting the smutty recounts of course). Sarah's first interaction with him was to see Remi's sketchbook and that scene was very vastly anticlimactic. And then came that awful trope of a woman running back to a shitty ex when things don't go her way. Not until the very last pages did their relationship show signs of, well, anything - things happened at the end, at least. And regarding Marco, we finally got some character development... in the epilogue. I had to slog through the whole book to get it though.
And the main character... I can't believe how her good fortune and bad luck is. She lands this super cool job in Paris researching a courtesan for a film, which comes with some great perks, but she 1) falls back into bed with her shitty ex who happens to live in the city, 2) needs to see a sketchbook her complicated lover who lives in Venice happens to own, and 3) the actress being cast to play Augustine is the very woman her ex cheated on her with. That's a whole lot of coincidence in one small book to expect a reader to believe.
I didn't enjoy the second book of this trilogy as much as I did the first one which I gave 5 stars to. The perfect balance between plot and smut from the first book was lost - there was so much smut in this one that there was barely any story. The first hundred pages seemed to recount the smut scenes from the first book as well as Augustine's diary chapters as her life as a courtesan. The middle and end was filled with smut scenes with other characters. Thankfully though, the plot went the way I wanted it to even though it took three quarters of the book for any plot to even develop. I'll be reading the last book in the trilogy because I like the stories of the "hidden women" so much and because the epilogue in Marco's perspective intrigued me. I'm hoping the author will be able to pull it back.

voto 3.5 per l'intera trilogia di media...a volte 4 stelle a volte 3. Sicuramente ben scritto, molto sensuale e mai volgare....ho apprezzato il parallelismo tra gli studi di Sarah e la sua storia...ma avrei voluto più spazio per la sua storia con Marco Donato....consiglio comunque a chi apprezza un pò di erotismo ma senza scadere nei dettagli esagerati.

Me doy cuenta que lo que no me gusta es su forma de escribir. Las escenas eróticas no me resultaban así porque no me transmitía el momento.
Muy aburrido. Recién me resultó interesante cuando se encuentra con Marcos que es al final de la historia.
La historia de Agustine que es la amante de un reconocido pintor en sus inicios, que la inmortaliza en una pintura. Ella es una buena noche te huérfana que había sido Feliz con sus padres amorosos y que por calumnias es dejada en la calle sin trabajo ni referencias. La rescata de la calle una Madama de la que también conocemos su historia. La inocente conoce los placeres sexuales a través de un hoyo en su piso que da a la recámara de la señora. Se enamora y le entrega su virginidad al pintor que le promete casamiento.
Se pelea con la Madama por un retrato que le hizo demasiado realista y se van. Pero pronto pasan frío y hambre y él decide recurrir a su padre.
Pronto le llega una carta a Agustine donde su marido del corazón con quien se casaron en privado sin clérigo y una testigo, le decía que no volvería.
Ella vuelve a la Madama.
La Madama la tienta con las riquezas que puede obtener de un vizconde repulsivo que pronto muere y luego de un duque cruel que manda a hacer otro retrato de ella a justamente su ex amante.
Mientras Sarah se encuentra con Kat con quien había tenido aquella aventura lésbica junto a Steven e intenta sonsacarle a Marcos la verdad de lo ocurrido en la fiesta pero no lo consigue. Pero ella sabe de su salón secreto que se abre con el libro favorito de ella en la biblioteca. Allí había encontrado los bosquejos de ella mientras seguía las instrucciones para masturbarse.
Se re encuentra con Steven y se enredan hasta que finalmente ella se da cuenta que no quiere aquella relación cuando le regala unos zapatos carísimos que tienen una mezcla para prostituta y famosa. Él le reclama su actitudy se termina todo.
Finalmente Agustine habla con su amor y descubre que la carta la había enviado el padre de él mientras él había estado enfermo. Se juran amor y deciden fugarse. Pero ella recibe a la hermana de él que le muestra cómo la arruinaría a toda su familia, a ella y a él.
Agustine ya enferma de tuberculosis, lo rechaza y él la odia. Se va a casar con una joven bonita.
Agustine muere y deja sus joyas a la Madama y su amiga y le pide que entregue una carta donde ella revela por que lo rechazó. Pero la Madama solo cumple el deseo de mantener la tumba en buen estado y con flores frescas hasta el día de hoy.
Una tristeza que me hace dar bronca haber perdido el tiempo en soportar la tortura de esta lectura hasta el final.
Sarah toma coraje impulsada por la historia escribe toda la verdad en un mail, y luego se mete en el cuarto de Marcos y por fin ve las cicatrices. Pero él no da el brazo a torcer y ella promete no volver a molestarlo.

Libro scritto molto bene: il presente di Sarah è scritto in prima persona, mentre le parti delle tre protagoniste del passato, sono scritte in terza persona. Il passato si intreccia al presente tramite le pagine dei diari e segue il presente in modo parallelo ed equilibrato.
Le vite di Luciana, Augustine e Kitty sono inserite molto bene nel conesto temporale in cui hanno vissuto e la scrittrice ha trovato per ognuna un carattere differente, con i punti in comune di vivere e lottare per l'amore della vita.
Fino a poco tempo fa (ma anche tutt'oggi purtroppo) le donne venivano considerate come oggetti e le tre protagoniste vivono la loro condizione dell'epoca: Luciana ha il padre padrone che preferisce lasciarla nell'ignoranza, trasformandola in una moglie remissiva. Augustine donna disonorata che lavora per una prostituta dell'epoca, a sua volta diventa cortigiana, è ammirata per la sua bellezza, viene invidiata ma additata come prostituta e il barone la usa come oggetto sessuale.
E infine Kitty che conosce la libertà omosessuale delle persona con cui lavora e che si lascia trasportare dalla vita notturna, mentre si gode l'amore della vita mentre subisce le bruttezze della guerra.
Bellissimo il passaggio di proprietà della perla arcobaleno, che lega tutte e tre le ragazze e del ruolo che assume per ognuna di loro.
Le tre ragazze vivono l'amore in modo giovane, intenso, profondamente, amano la vita e accettano il destino in maniera differente, e Sarah da loro impara a essere forte a vivere e ad amare.
Marco... che dire di quest'uomo che si castiga e si nega non solo al mondo ma alla vita, si punisce rifiutando di farsi amare, accontentandosi di amare a distanza.
Sarah, ha come ognuno di noi una parte selvaggia e segreta che però vuole domare e trattenere, lasciando libera la fantasia per vivere pienamente solamente l'amore che tutto da e nulla chiede. Per non parlare dei suoi sogni onirici, misteriosi ed erotici.
Probabilmente il primo libro è più hot degli altri, ma non c'è niente di scabroso, perverso o tremendamente spinto: è osè e pepato al punto giusto.
Un piccolo appunto per Silvio il discreto quanto determinante domestico, che appare a margine della storia ma dal ruolo davvero determinante.
Vi consiglio di leggere questa trilogia, lasciando da parte quel titolo che poco la rappresenta, dimenticatevene e immergetevi nelle vite di Luciana, Augustine, Kitty, Sarah, Marco e di tutti quelli che li hanno circondati.

Malditos finales
Esas últimas páginas me van a hacer leer el siguiente libro y no, no crean que es porque en verdad sea la mejor historia del mundo, mi curiosidad me mata.
Este libro nos centra más en la historia del pasado que es de nuestra inocente cortesana Augustina du vert y su amor por Remí Sauvageon, tengo que admitir que se me aguaron un tris los ojos por como termina la historia de estos dos (y en mi defensa, soy débil ante esas situaciones)
Por otro lado tenemos a Sarah que.... ummmm
La verdad solo me importa ella y su relación con Marco, esto es lo que me mantiene aquí

This book is two stories in one, written in parallel. In the first story Sarah Thomson is a modern-day historian researching the life of a nineteenth century courtesan. The second story is the poignant love story of the courtesan, Augustine Levert. There are a lot of sexual descriptions in both stories, mostly unnecessary, but if you can overlook this Augustine’s love story is sad and emotional and Sarah’s life is complicated and intriguing.

Me gustaría saber por qué los publicistas insisten en ligar este tipo de libros con 50 sombras o con el genero erótico en general. Nada que ver el uno con el otro. La historia es de lo más triste que he leído. ¡Estos libros son mucho más!

Cosi come il primo libro si legge in poco tempo, la storia continua ma una delle due protagoniste è diverse e ci porterà a Parigi! Ci Farà vedere come è la vita di parigi nel passato con un amore che ti strugge l'anima.

Avec ce deuxième tome, Stella Knightlley poursuit l'entrêlement de deux récits : les suites des péripéties amoureuses et professionnelles de Sarah, l'héroine du XXIème siècle, et la découverte d'un nouveau personnage historique sur lequelle Sarah travaille : Augustine Levert, célèbre courtisane française du XIXème siècle.
Cette fois, Sarah vient s'installer brièvement à Paris pour rassembler des informations sur cette fameuse Augustine, dans le cadre d'un projet ambitieux : elle participe à sa manière au biopic hollywoodien qui va se tourner sur la courtisane française. Sarah l'historienne va donc consacrer tout son temps au service de cette nouvelle mission, ce qui lui laisse toutefois du temps pour repenser à son aventure ... contrariée avec Marco.
Augustine n'a pas une vie facile, je dois dire que j'ai trouvé tout le récit de sa vie profondément triste, et assez cruel en fait.
Je n'avais pas vraiment accroché au premier tome, mais là c'est encore plus tranché : j'ai eu bien du mal à finir ce livre et au final à l'apprécier. Trop de tout ... Trop de coïncidences heureuses, trop de drama, une romance poussive ... Enfin poussive ... c'est même encore loin de la réalité. Et finalement il ne se passe pas grand chose.
Une fois encore la partie concernant Sarah se termine sur un cliffhanger, mais la suite se fera sans moi.

Again Stella has done it again for me. I was left feeling satisfied at the ending to Luciana's story yet saddened to hear of the demise of Marco's attentions towards Sarah.
Dejected after her split for Steven and almost bewildered by the fairytale she believed hung between her and Marco we see Sarah in a funk and between jobs. Then along comes an opportunity not to be missed as she is asked to undertake research for a film script about another femme fatale this time in Paris.
Once again we are trust into two parallel stories, both mirroring each other. Researching Augustine's story leads Sarah once again to Venice to the same private library and to the home of Marco Donato.
Once again the parallel stories made for really interesting and engrossing reading! The stories are once again a reflection of each other and much as I want to go on about how I really don't want to add any spoilers to the review!! This volume includes reconciliations and the re emergence of people from the past plus several realisations on the part of Sarah. And OMG it will keep you gripped to the end once again. And the Epilogue......! aaarrrgghhh ... I'm off now to dive into part three!

Pensavo che avrei detestato il secondo capitolo di una saga in cui l'autrice si ostina a favorire il lato erotico a quello narrativo, e invece mi sono dovuta ricredere. Non che lo trovi un libro di quelli che ti segnano la vita, ma secondo me è una buona lettura da ombrellone.
Quanto al dovermi ricredere... intanto pensavo di che sotto le mentite spoglie del produttore si nascondesse un certo uomo del mistero e poi credevo che il primo incontro tra Sarah e Marco sarebbe stato... diverso. Lo ammetto, ho preso un abbaglio in entrambi i casi.
Comincio ad apprezzare anche un altro lato di questi romanzi: le donne. In linea di massima le protagoniste di romanzi del genere sono sempre insicure, dolci creature che sbocciano quando l'uomo di turno le prende sotto la sua ala protettiva, ma le donne di Stella, in qualsiasi epoca, sono forti, indipendenti e riescono a riprendersi sempre dalle delusioni amorose che, inevitabilmente, gli uomini procurano.

Ho iniziato a leggerlo convinta, visto il titolo della trilogia, di ritrovarmi immersa in un libro con il solito miliardario impelagato con la ragazza della porta accanto di turno, ed invece mi son scoperta a leggerlo tutto d'un fiato poiché ha fatto scaturire in me una feroce curiosità ed una febbrile ricerca del lieto fine.
E' un libro che seduce, una doppia trama intreccia con un filo sottile la protagonista Sarah Thomson e...

En bref, un second tome tout aussi entrainant que le premier entre passé et présent. Si j'ai préféré le premier côté étant donné que les relations de Sarah évoluent peu, j'ai quand même beaucoup aimé son évolution, ses questions et sa façon de gérer les évènements. Elle ne lâche rien, elle sait ce qu'elle veut et essayera tout ce qu'elle peut pour l'obtenir. Et étant donné le mot de la fin, vivement la suite !!

En bref, un second tome tout aussi entrainant que le premier entre passé et présent. This series isn't something I would usually read, but having said that I have really enjoyed the first two books and I'm looking forward to the third next month. I really like the main character Sarah and I'm intrigued as to if and how she wins her lover Marco in the end.

Beautifully written book. Touching and sad, the sacrifice from Augustine. So frustrated with Marco atm, I hope Sarah doesnt give up on him. Going to be a great last book!!!

Just as the first book, 2 wonderfully written stories. I was very very much affected by augustine's story. Very sad.

Just finished this book after a long pause because the middle part turned me down. Still, my favorite quotation is : "Give me the man I love and a simple wooden rocking chair and I should be the happiest woman in the world."

Bello ma meno del precedente. L'espediente dei ricordi usato per collegare le vicende di Sarah con quanto accaduto a Venezia si risolvono in una serie di ripetizioni che annoiano chi ha già letto il primo volume. Peccato.
