It's prom night. Samantha Kearns has been eagerly awaiting her date's arrival. Except now her date is running late and Samantha begins to fear he may not show.
Convinced there must be a perfectly good explanation, Samantha's mother Tammy sends her husband John out to search for their Princess's prince.
John obeys...for he knows the horror that lies ahead if he fails to find the boy.
A twisted tale that combines the elements of such classics as Psycho and Carrie, "Princess" is a 47 page short story that will drag you into a world of madness, depravity, and murder.
A native of the Philadelphia area, Jeff has published multiple works in both fiction and non-fiction. In 2011 he was the recipient of the Red Adept Reviews Indie Award for Horror.
In March of 2014, his novel BAD GAMES was a #1 Kindle bestseller and is now being optioned as a feature film.
Free time for Jeff is spent watching horror movies, The Three Stooges, and mixed martial arts. He loves steak and more steak, thinks the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the greatest movie ever, wants to pet a lion some day, and hates spiders.
Gosh, what an awesome combination of Carrie and Psycho! John Kearns is looking for a young man for the prom night of his daughter. In the mall he sees a proper candidate and kidnaps him. At home his wife Tammy is waiting with Samantha, their daughter. But what about the daughter's true nature? In a disturbing, fabricated world the prom night takes place. The kidnapped boy is even forces to have sexual intercourse with his 'Queen'. Does the story have a good ending? The author came up with an excellent, well plotted and absolutely deranged story here. It will keep you hanging on the edge of your seat. Absolutely recommended!
**** 4 Mommy and Daddy All Sorts of CRAZY Stars ****
This book is short, to the point, not so sweet and way, way, WAY beyond fawked-up-ness!!!
We got ourselves a story of an overbearing pageant mommy gone wrong, oh so very wrong and a weak excuse of a husband and daddy. Tammy and John Kearns are not the parents you think. This book begins off leading you down the path of great parents, getting their daughter ready for prom.
THIS BOOK IS NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK.
I will say I was a bit confused at the beginning but when things started clicking, like John abducting their daughter Samantha's prom date. Then holding him at gun point as he got his tux on. Then the abducted date waits for his date at the bottom of the staircase for her beautiful grand entrance . As the scared date looks up, he sees MOMMY DEAREST in the prom dress.
Wait...what? Yep, mommy is daughter and hubby is daddy...where is Samantha...oh that comes later.
Believe me the next events of this book are top running for complete, off the wall, crazy winning WOW!!
Honestly, it is a good thing this book is short, but the crazy side of me wanted more. Any more of this story and I may have needed to see a shrink. I like it!!
It was pretty confusing at the beginning, although the way it was written you just keep reading despite the confusion. The confusion never really stops, although piece by piece most of the story gets clearer. Esp. when the 'prom' starts there's just no way you can put down the book. You know you just *have* to finish it. You just *need* to know how it's gonna end, why they do this insane stuff. It's very thrilling from there on to the end. The end was a nice plot twist, I didn't really expect that kind of an ending.
All in all, even though a bit confusing, this was a great short. If you're into thriller or thrilling stories, by all means read it. It's a great book and I'll definitely check out other books by this author :)
Time spent on reading, from beginning to end: 1 hour.
I've read this a few times now, and even though I know the twists in it, I still find it a good read. John is a sympathetic character, though weak against his wife's wishes. We know from the beginning he has had enough of living in her mad world, but there appears to be no escape. The portrayals of Tammy and Samantha demonstrate the awkward, twisted and ultimately sad and toxic relationship they have. My only criticism is I'd like to have understood a little more about character motivations, to be shown rather than told some aspects, but in all its a book I will no doubt read again in future.
I really don't know how to even review this besides saying "what the fuck?" Oooo but that ending tho!! This was a super, super quick read. I would rec if you're looking for a quick, psych thriller.
At 47pages, this is a quick read. It is somewhat easy to guess where the story is going but it was a good little story for the 0.99 cents I spent on it.
I loved this 18 chapter book. It reminded me of old school Alfred Hitchcock with the creepy, demented, psychological warfare storyline. It was definitely a sick twist on how prom night could be!
John and Tammy were Samantha’s parents. The only rule in that household–the princess deserves a prince. I felt very bad for the boy kidnapped, which made the story even more creepy. That family was crazy. Chills went down my spine while reading. I’m a firm believer that the most frightening things in this world are events that can happen in real life. And teens can be kidnapped in mall parking lots in real life. When the boy pleaded to be set free because he missed his mom, I shed a tear.
My favorite line: “A poor performance was acceptable, but refusal to go on. Unacceptable.” I especially enjoyed that the story was written in John’s point-of-view. I liked getting inside the head of the person who could’ve stopped things but was too weak to fight Tammy’s aggressiveness. I loved the ending because readers got a glimpse into the family’s past to see when Tammy’s mental breakdown happened and they got to see what exactly happened to Samantha.
If you’re a fan of reading mind games, then you’ll love this book.
Utterly and completely disturbing, which I love! Even though I could see what was happening right from the beginning, and had a very good idea of how the story would play out, I still found this to be a very entertaining psychological horror. I'll definitely be looking for some more stories by this author.
*the only thing I didn't care for is that the cover really doesn't match the story
I never used to read these shorter vignettes, but have found lately I sometimes enjoy something I can just read and be done with. I liked this one. It is rather dark and many do not like that
O-M-G! What was that? Seriously I just couldn't get enough of it. I would say it was a mind game horror short tale that will blow your mind. There's just no stopping when you get the real vibe of this book...
While reading the tale at starting it was bit of confusing to process in your brain. The confusion continues for few couple of pages in the story. But after that the think became more clear and you could find out the real reason of that confusion...
Samantha was the daughter of John Kearns and her wife Tammy kearns. While I really felt deeply sorry for the boy who been kidnapped by John and make the boy name him Josh for some cruel reason. So when the story begins and more I go deep into the story the more I find it impossible not to ignore but finish it. It was breathtakingly creepy, high with tensed atmosphere and of course a bit of confusing. The ending is all that you needed to read as it was the main game changer of that whole short story. I liked that ending part that what John did I strongly believe it should be happen as like story like that. Then again for me it was mind blowing experience...
Smh...when I tell you this book was crazy or should I say disturbing...this book was crazy. That wife, honey that wife. She was batshit crazy. And that husband, dude man up. That's all I can say. The end was a little off. Left me with a few questions. Other than that was a pretty good read.
One of my favorite books from this author. I was hooked from the beginning. I really like books like these and this one was suspenseful! You will not be disappointed with this read. I plan to get more novels by Jeffrey Menapace.
Very disturbing! Fantastic ending! Sometimes enough is enough. Really enjoyed reading all these books by Menapace and look forward to downloading more! Right now, gotta make the bed!
This is a short but sweet story. You find yourself quite attached to the characters (especially Josh), so massive kudos to the writer. Cannot recommend it enough for those who like psychological thrillers.
I'm not a fan of short stories or series, but I am impressed with this author! I'm going to check out the 'Warped' collection & hope for more [ longer, non-serials ; ) ].
