Konstantin Nikolayevich Batyushkov (Russian: Константин Николаевич Батюшков) is an important figure in Russian poetry of the first half of the 19th century. His deeply elegaic and lyrical work was affected by depression from which he suffered throughout his whole life. In the later years his illness progressed, however Batyushkov managed to write from time to time. What remained from these tortured years is still considered prime example of russian poetry. Along with Zhukovsky, Batyushkov played an important role in the developement of poetic language in Russia and greatly influenced Pushkin.
