S. M. Stelmack is our pen name, short for Serge & Moira Stelmack.

We aim to give what we like in a story— gutsy men and women, high stakes and LOL lines. Serge is the storymaster who blasts out the beginning, middle and end. Moira comes behind, clucking and hemming, as the story undergoes countless rewrites till it meets our vision. She's also the media relations manager, senior editor, marketing VP, director of operations (domestic and foreign), comptroller and the one who makes sure that Serge has a steady supply of cola while he works.

We live with our two kids, and several other strange pets, in a land of wintertime sunshine and snow and summertime mud and mosquitoes. Actually, it’s not that bad. The snakes in the local lake aren’t venomous.

This is a strong follow up for Book 1 Undertow, a book I absolutely love and adore. I can't stop gushing about it and really hope more people know about the book. Yes, Undertow! A story about subterranean life in New York City and a hero with a case of PTSD after being trapped underground for years. Intrigue much?

"The Midnight Everlasting. A place of eternal darkness."

In Midnight Everlasting, we got a change of scene and venture into the subterranean in the heart of London. Our heroine, Zephanie Sweetly is the Rat Princess, the head of Sweetly clan that serve as a mediator who provide a safe ground for criminal dealings.

The appearance of Rawheads, which is some kind of shadowy monster that responsible for a massacre make Zephanie to seek out help from Thomas Coyle, a private detective specialize in missing person. Zephanie believes that by finding the missing hacker is the key to solving the puzzle and she had the perfect bait to get Thomas on board.

Thomas Coyle, our hero had been searching for his lost son for ten years. This just reminds me of my recent reread of Cry No More, about a parent's love and relentless pursue in searching for their lost children. For the first time, Tom finally got a lead on his son, only for it to come from someone from the wrong side of the law. His initial animosity towards Zephanie was palpable. But he just can't resist in finding out the truth behind his missing son.

Midnight Everlasting give us the perfect blend of facts and fictions. The ongoing investigation of the agenda behind the Rawheads was intriguing and the action scene gives me the adrenaline rush. The truth behind Tom's missing son left me baffled. Holy cow! These people still exist?

The romance was pretty much a subplot, a side dish that spice things up. I have to say it was not as emotional or something that move me as much as the romance between Lindsay and Cole. It is still well done and I just can't wait for them to get it on and wondering how can they reach a HEA with her being a Rat Princess. She basically have to remain underground, right?

Zephanie had known about Tom for years and been keeping tabs on his life. She wants to help him with his search and according to the prophecy she knew he is the ONE. Reading her inner dilemma on how the heck is she going to win over a man who actually despise her heritage is something fun to read. As for Tom, his initially prejudice gives way to understanding and acceptance. To him, this is a second chance.

"You're not perfect. I'm not perfect. Pieces of a puzzle don't fit together because they are smooth and whole but because they're broken and rough in the right places."

Despite being Book 2, this one can definitely works as a standalone. But why skip Book 1, Undertow is too awesome to pass up, if you are into romantic thriller/suspense. Anyway, I was happy to see an old face here. Reggie! Previous couple, Lindsay and Jack was also mentioned, but I would love to see their cameo. Maybe in subsequent books?

4.5 Scary, Exciting, Unique stars!
Once again, this writing duo knocks me off of my feet with their unique blend of Urban Fantasy, Romance, and Horror. This second installment in the UnderCity Chronicles takes place in and under London. And for me, it was even freakier than book one. There just seemed to be a lot going on...a slew of new characters, an introduction to an old myth that is very, very real in this story, and the ever present Rawheads, the creatures who live underground and have recently started appearing to terrorize dwellers of the Midnight.

Our heroine, Zephanie, is the heir to the throne of Rat Queen. Her mother, who left her years ago, is the reigning queen, but Zephanie and her little friend Blackball the rat are a big focal point in this book along with Tom, a private investigator who's marriage crumbled when he lost his son over ten years ago. Their hesitant and awkward romance began long ago, although Tom remained clueless until recently. Apparently, fate has had a hand in bringing these two together. Their circumstances are less than ideal. Their slow building attraction was a little hard to swallow at first but once I got into the tone of the story, it fit perfectly. This isn't a hearts and flowers romance. It's gritty and scary, borne of necessity/proximity first and attraction later.

"Believe me, I understand despair. Believe me, too, when I say you're no monster. And you can choose the life you want to live, be it in London or the Midnight or anywhere else. It's what you do now that's going to matter, and that's one hundred percent in your hands."

It especially fits when you read the initial note from Serge, half of the writing duo that created this imaginative world. He notes the unfairness of the world...the tragedy, the heartbreak, the cruelty. And then goes on to show us a world that seems to be full of monsters and evil, and delves into the individual lives of people and creatures that are very different than they originally appear. Now, I don't know if that was the point, but that's what struck me. Example: we used to have rats as pets...they're extremely intelligent, fastidious, and loyal.

But tell someone you have a rat, and you're an automatic weirdo. Now, the lessons learned in this book are a bit heavier than that, but it is one example used to illustrate prejudices that people have against certain things. Until we understand another's life, we have no idea what kind of person they really are. These underground creatures may look different, but for the most part, they're all doing what they've been taught to do, which is survive.

If there is one thing I could change, there is a separate story line that includes a captive that I was mega-interested in...I mean, biting my nails and cringing because I couldn't decide if I wanted to read on or cower in fear of what's coming for her...and I was left unsatisfied :(

I'm beginning to ramble...again. It's book like this...these hard to explain little gems that I really want everyone to read but I'm afraid they won't because of the labels on it...I just want to convince someone to give it a go. You can't understand it until you read it. But if you're like me, and you're getting tired of the same old junk, the poorly edited (or non-edited), recycled plot, lame and cheesy romance, vampire/shifter/angel paranormals, etc, I encourage you to try this series. It's well written, wildly different, genre-mixing action with a dash of lessons learned. And wide open for more books, but each book so far has a definitive end that leaves the reader satisfied.

I was contacted by the author to see if I was interested in getting a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. I jumped at the chance as I was really pleased at how much I liked the first book in this series. And the second installment did not disappoint.

This book is set in Great Britain, it follows a completely different set of lead characters. The main female is Zephanie Sweetly, her and her family live underground in the Midnight, they work as caretakers keeping the Midnight safe for the people who aren't always accepted up top. Until one day her family is attacked, family members and clients are killed, while one client is kidnapped. After narrowly escaping the attack, Zephanie hires Thomas Coyle, a famous missing persons expert to find her client. Little does Coyle know Zephaine has an agenda all of her own. Together Zephanie and Coyle team up with some American's to find out what happened to her client, and why after all these years they're being targeted by the creatures that live in the Midnight.

I really enjoyed this book, more then the first one really. I liked the hero in this book better, I felt that Jack from the first book was a little on the whiny side. Both Jack and Tom had horrible things happen to them and were both well written, but I enjoyed Tom's character better then Jack's. Another nice thing about the characters in this book is how the author created all new lead's, while incorporating a few of the minor characters from the first book to make the connection between the two.

The romance was well done, in my opinion anyway. It wasn't overpowering, the author did a good job combining a good mix of soft tender moments and thrilling action scenes.

I felt that the world building was well done, even though it's a second book, the first one was set in NYC, and there were still a lot of differences between the Midnight of Great Britain and the Underground of NYC. I also liked how the author used a different name for the mole people. In Britain they are called Rawheads and in the United States they are called Moles. It makes sense that two different countries would use different terms, it made it feel more real. Speaking of feeling real, the dialogue was very well done too, using a lot of English slang and terminology.

On a whole this was an enjoyable read, I was more then happy to read and review this one. I'm glad that I was able to get my hands on this book and as it's the third book I've read by this husband and wife writing team, I would be happy to read any future books they write.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The UnderCity Chronicles unveils a setting that I have never read of before. Gone are the vampires, werewolves, steampunk, dystopian genres and in comes these creatures from the underground and the people who live there.

This book is set in London underground. The protagonist Zephanie Sweetly is known at the Rat Queen. She and Thomas Coyle is entwined together in a prophecy that brings them together.

One of the things I love about S.M. Stelmack's novels is that the characters feel raw and gritty, which incidentally makes them seem more real in certain aspects than any other character I have read of before.

Having said that, in this novel, I was disappointed with the relationship between the Zephanie and Thomas. I felt that their relationship at times was very unequal with her wanting more than he did most of the time. I didn't see or feel her a strong character because of this neediness. I couldn't see what made her a leader. This was contrasted for me with the female protagonist in the first book in the series, who seemed to be made of steel and had a strong back bone even though she didn't know what she was getting in to and her fear of unknown should or could have crippled her.

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I wonder where it will be set.

Zephanie belongs to one of the most powerful criminal clans in the tunnels under London.there is a whole different society in the undergrounds than above. Zephanie and her family live and have their business in the Midnight. Zephanie’s family makes a living setting up negotiations between criminals most of the time. This way there is a safe place for the criminals to meet. Zephanie enjoyed her simple life leading people into the tunnels content not to be in charge. Even though she is the rat princess. But then her family’s business is attacked with some of her family killed and also some of their clients. Why were the Rawheads all of a sudden attacking the Midnight after all these years. Zephanie knows she must step up and be the Rat Queen and lead her people. But she needs Tom's help to find a hacker who had been kidnapped during the attacks. Tom is a private detective that is pretty successful at finding missing people. However ten years ago his son came up mysteriously missing and his marriage crumbled as his wife blamed Tom. but Tom hasn’t given up on his son. Zephanie tells tom she may have some information on his son but in return he has to help her find the hacker she is looking for. Zephanie thought she knew everything about London’s underbelly but Zephanie finds out that there was a lot she didn’t know as Tom and her start investigating the missing hacker. Also the world's most dangerous terrorist was in London- Rander MacMurphy. Tom and Zephanie hunt for the hacker and Tom’s son but also an evil group working with the Rawheads- an underground species. They have to find this evil group before it takes over the world. Tom and Zephaniah go through mental institution, underground buried cities, buried ancient temples, and horrible mazes to stop the evil group. Zephanie and Tom seem to fall for each other as they go on with their investigation.
This book was interesting and I can certainly say very different. In this case that was a good thing. I love how Tom refused to give upon his son and didn’t become bitter like his ex wife. He still had hope even after ten years. It was a good plot even with a different type of story I didn’t really care that all of a sudden Tom and Zephanie were in Insta love which I am not really a fan of as I feel that it just lust really. But that is my opinion. I loved the twists and turns of this story. The characters are unique but very good. I recommend this story especially if you want a different read that will keep your interest.

This review can be found at The Blogger Girls.

I have no words for this book. Seriously, I don’t even know what to say or how to explain what this book was like or even how much it consumed my life for a day. It’d be like trying to explain what a cake tastes like to someone who can’t taste. It’s just so hard to describe how amazing it was! I’ll do my best to try, though.

Zephanie Sweetly knows everything about London’s underworld. Or at least she thought she did. When the myths of the Rawheads turns real and massacres her business and some of her family, Zephanie’s left with a decision: leave well enough alone and move on or do her best to find out why they were targeted. In Zephanie’s mind, there’s only one choice especially when one of her customers was kidnapped during the massacre. To find the missing woman, Zephanie will need the help of Thomas Coyle, the best and most experienced investigator when it comes to missing people.

Unfortunately, Tom won’t deal with people like Zephanie, who make their money helping criminals. But when Zephanie tells him she might have a lead on Tom’s son who was kidnapped 10 years prior, Tom has no choice but to help. What started out as a dangerous investigation turns even more deadly when every truth turns out to be a lie and every lie turns out to be a truth. Zephanie thought she knew her place in the world, thought she knew all about London’s underground but the more her and Tom investigate, the more she realizes she never knew a thing.

Okay, there’s SOOO much more to the story than just that such as Zephanie’s connection with Tom and how that progresses throughout the story and the emotions between them. The betrayal that’s uncovered throughout the story and the answers that everyone seems to have but won’t tell. As with the previous book, Undertow, I have no idea how to put into words how much I enjoyed this novel. It’s a crazy story filled with impossibilities and creatures that inhabit the sewers and tunnels underneath major cities. This one is about the underworld of London and the societies that live under there, the rats and the Rawheads that are so dangerous they’re feared by everyone. But it’s also about finding three individuals – Tom’s son, the hacker that was kidnapped, and a dangerous woman who’s a threat to every human.

But most of all, it’s about Zephanie coming into her birthright. Her attraction and love for Tom and her need for him to become the Rat Queen. At the same time, it’s about Tom and finding his son; being able to find the kid he lost 10 years ago and the hope and fear that comes with it. It’s about Zephanie finally being able to have Tom and Tom discovering a love that he struggles with accepting.

I ADORED this book and I’m absolutely loving this series but, more than that, I love these characters. I love that Zephanie is so stubborn and argumentative and I love that Tom only puts up with it at first because he has to but then grows to love that about Zephanie. But I also loved that they were both such strong and developed characters. I loved their chemistry together and the way they handled certain situations. I cried once or twice because of the raw emotion in both of them and smiled like a crazy person when the ending happened.

Right from the start the authors drew me into the story and kept my interest throughout the whole novel. I finished this book in ONE DAY! A novel of this size normally takes me two days at least but I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning just so I could see what happened in the end and even after I finished, I couldn’t go to sleep because I kept thinking about it. It has a lot of twists and turns, with some shocking moments especially in parts where you think you know what will happen but we also get to see a few of the secondary characters from Undertow such as Selene, Reggie and Tocat, not to mention how adorably cute and funny Zephanie’s pet rat, Blackball, was.

There was absolutely nothing about this book that bothered me or that I had an issue with. It’s fast-paced, intriguing, thrilling, suspenseful, mysterious, unique, crazy, intense… I could go on and on but I’ll leave it at that.

In the end, this was a fabulously intriguing story that left me speechless. So much happens that it kept me engrossed throughout the book but there’s also enough romance to it that had me rooting forZephanie and Tom to be together. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book, Necropolis of Light, and seeing where the story goes from here. I don’t care if this book sounds like something you’d read or not, PICK IT UP ANYWAY or at least read Undertow because this series will surprise you in more ways than one!

Zephanie enjoys her simple life leading people into the underbelly of the Midnight, content to play tour guide instead of being in charge. When her family’s holestead is attacked, Zephanie realizes that she has no choice but to step and pick a side. War has come to the Midnight and it is time for a new Rat Queen to command her people.
I had no idea what I was reading when I first started this book. I had a vague thought that this would be a paranormal story but in no shape or form the way that the book played out. There was a mystery to solve at the heart of everything, with supernatural species, control over animals, romance and steamy naked time, cults, science and history as well as war mixed in. The story had so many aspects to it, but not alarmingly so (but enough to keep me interested and on my toes) but I felt like the main quality to the book was a mystery to solve. I had no idea that this was the second book in a series until after I started the book. That being said, I did not feel like I was missing out on anything since this was a complete story, but slight references were hinted at that I felt had been building elsewhere. I enjoyed this book that I will look for the first book as well as what I hope will be more to come in this dark creepy world.
The book was predominantly told from Zephanie and her sorta, kinda love interest Tom’s point of view. There were random sections here and there that were told from other characters views, but Zeph and Tom were the main characters. After reading the book I realized that the story was written by two authors, a man and woman team, which makes me wonder if they split the writing of character perspectives by gender. Zephanie and Tom were both incredibly believable as people and both unique and likeable, which makes me wonder if each author gave a specific character a voice. Zephie is so earnest and full of zeal for the good of mankind, which is strange based on her families profession. She has none of the traits that the past Rat Queens have, which I hope is a good sign for her future. Tom on the other hand is so very jaded and sees faults in everyone. He refuses to take Zephanie at face value even though she has pinned for him for 10 years in silence. They make a great team. I will admit to the urge to hunt him down and smack him for his treatment of Zephanie near the end of the book, but he got his stuff together and I am willing to let bygones be bygones.
This story for the most part wraps up nicely, at least for Tom and Zephanie. There are some loose ends for other characters which I look forward to learning about in future books (mainly the creepo Tommy and the Zhulkists). I enjoyed the story and the amazing world building that took place across the pages. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a dark paranormal romance/mystery unlike any they have read before.

REVIEW: Wow !!! What a ride

After reading the first book, I couldn’t wait to read the next book.

Tom is approached by Zephanie Sweetly, she is offering information regarding his missing son, who in turn wants his help in locating a missing client. A top computer hacker ( a twist I hear you cry )

For ten years Tom, a private detective has been searching for his son, believed kidnapped and taken into the tunnels underneath London. I liked this character, very much. Zephanie, isn’t your typical heroine. A leader of one of the most powerful criminal clans inhabiting the underground network of tunnels.

Again this writing duo knocks me off of my feet with their unique blend of Writing. This second installment in the UnderCity Chronicles takes place in and under London. And for me, it was even better than book one. There just seemed to be a so much more going on. A whole lot of new characters, and the ever present Rawheads, (these were the creatures from book one, who live underground and have recently started appearing to terrorise the underground dwellers).

It’s a fast paced book, and will keep you turning the pages until the end. (Which had me on the edge of my seat)

Who is the rat queen ? What is the prophesy ? And will the Rawheads be stopped ?

It’s a thriller, a little comedy, tons of suspense, and a dash of romance. What more could you ask for in a book ?

Highly recommended

As anyone who reads my reviews knows, I loved the first book in the series and so I was incredibly excited for this installment. However I'm still at a loss for what genre this is?! I can't put it in any category!

First I'll address what I know you're all wondering, yes some of the characters from the first book do pop up! The whole battle with the moles thing carries on as well, among other continuations. You could probably get away with reading this as a standalone, but ya know it's more fun if you read the other one!

I still love the world, it totally encompasses you as you read and sucks you in. You feel like you're there and everything is so vivid and atmospheric. I also love all the creatures, as weird and strange as some are!

The characters are all well written and realistic. You can connect with them and develop one of those pesky emotional attachments that give you ridiculous feels.

The UnderCity Chronicles are two truly unique books, and Midnight Everlasting continues on being a thrilling read, totally impossible to put down, and having loads of twists and turns to keep you on your toes, as well as little pieces of humour.

To be honest, Midnight Everlasting was even creepier than Undertow, particularly as I am a regular user of the London Tube. Undertow kind of made me a little bit like "omg" about the tube, it really made me think, this one? Total freak out. I may never be able to ride the tube again. Ever.....okay I'm joking, it wasn't that bad, but I'll certainly never look at the tube the same way ever again.

I loved the mythology for this one, we got an introduction to an old myth that just ya know...turned out to be quite real. I love mythology and the mythology in this was well written and rich.

The romance was perfectly written, slow building attraction and all that, and the story overall was gritty and quite dark. Although whether I'm saying it's dark as in story wise or dark as in world/location wise (geddit) is up to you.

Midnight Everlasting is the second book int the UnderCity Chronicles and can easily be read as a standalone novel. Some of the characters from Undertow (book one) make an appearance in this book as secondary characters. While it's not critical to read Undertow before Midnight Everlasting, it'll definitely enhance your understanding of the tunnels and the creatures living there.

While the first book of this series focused more on the Moles/Rawheads, Midnight Everlasting focuses more on the Rat Queen and her history within the tunnels under London. This story thrilling, suspenseful, action packed, with a touch of romance. This book will suck you into the under world of tunnels and won't let you go until long after you finish the story. S.M. Stelmack has a way with words that will transport you into the heat if the action. The story flows nicely and the dialogue feels natural. The characters are intriguing and well balanced.

This is one story that you shouldn't miss!

I am absolutely addicted to the world created in the UnderCity Chronicles. Midnight Everlasting did not disappoint, and I quickly found myself lost in the new characters and new atmosphere in London. I appreciated the authors giving me small glimpses into the lives of the characters in Undertow. My only fear is that they can't write the series fast enough for me to devour them! This is a solid 5+ star!
