Steven Golden has just been commissioned as an ensign in the Imperial SpaceNavy aboard the Empire’s newest ship, the Queen of Rozari. He’s assigned to the squad of the meanest, nastiest commander in the whole fleet, LCDR Marik Korelesk. Steven’s overprotective mom is having a little trouble adjusting to his absence and Steven himself is just not sure where he fits in. Add to that Steven’s new friends including Sam, the nephew of the famous pilot Zem, who discovers that unlike his uncle, he’s afraid to fly and Randy, who lives in the bowels of the ship in the top secret hacker lab. There's also a princess who has laid traps to ensnare a prince. The adventures are quirky and fun and a planet or two is saved along the way.

Naomi lives in the north Olympic Peninsula and is mom to 3 and a Pomeranian. She has always been a fan of historical fiction, fantasy and science fiction and is known for having waited in line for seven hours for the opening of both the original Star Wars and Star Trek films.

Having been an accountant for more than twenty-five years, Naomi is now turning her attention full time to continuing The Two Moons of Rehnor series and the Time Tripping Adventure series as dreaming of fictional people is far more interesting than reconciling ledgers.

Review: Mixed feelings about this one. It continued the plot and was yet another quick read, but I think I liked previous books better.

I love stories that span over the course of a character's lifespan. I liked seeing things from Shika's perspective, and watching Senya, Katie, and the rest of the group grow older. I have a huge soft spot for plots that come full-circle. On the other hand, sometimes things felt almost too convenient. But perhaps that's just Senya's will taking over ;)

I found it interesting that across all social stratifications on all the worlds we encountered in this book, one constant always remained: the teenagers all say Dude and know how to fist-bump. (Creative license and suspension of disbelief, I know, I know. I can only imagine that the author must live with at least one teenager. Haha.)

This book got pretty political, which I'm not sure if I noticed the first time I read it. (I must have, but since I didn't take notes, I have no idea.) It wasn't bad, per se, it was just an odd change of pace for the series to have it parallel current American politics so precisely (as well as fairly obvious which side of politics it was being written from... almost too forcefully obvious? I kept expecting it to go in a different direction).

I didn't love this one as much as I did the other books in this series, but it was still a decent read. I loved getting to see little bits of Senya & Katie's love and getting to know Stephen.

Focussing more on the next generation, this story is about Shika, Senya and Katie's son, who wants to be a pilot.

We are introduced to new characters, who quickly become another important part of the story. Elana is particularly likeable.

I have enjoyed the humour in other parts of the series, but this one was hilarious, especially regarding Senya and his mother-in-law and the scene about the loss of teeth...brilliant dialogue.

The mystical scenes with the 'old man' were cleverly done and brought yet another beautiful dimension to the story on many levels...no spoilers from me.

Another fabulous installment of this magical and mysterious science-fiction /fantasy.

Highly recommended.
