Healing Grace
Grace has a secret. Just like her aunt, and her grandmother before her, she could fix anyone with a touch, at a cost she never questioned -- until her husband developed cancer and died. Believing no one would forgive her for not being able to save him, Grace runs from the life she knew, hoping even God wouldn’t find her in a little out-of-the-way town in Michigan. It takes a very sick man and his little boy to help her face her past, accept who she is and battle her way back to redemption. Just when she and Ted begin to hope for the future, he relapses. Well written and a story that tugs at your heart.
If you've read and liked Francine River's Sin Eater you'll probably like Healing Grace. In these times of modern medicine it's hard to imagine someone has a healing touch like Grace Runyon does. The story works though and soon you'll be sure she has the touch. God has given her the gift of healing through touch though she isn't called on to use it in her medical field all the time.
Life isn't fair and in fiction it isn't either. Grace is running from family and guilt but ends up in the same type situation she's left behind.

Healing Grace is a story of powerful interactions in the relationships between characters that are at first strangers to one another. Two members of this large cast in particular have severe emotional and physical injuries that could lead to destruction of faith in one soul and death to another.
Lisa Lickel has authored a compelling story of healing through the various ways God has provided. Ms Lickel's writing is thought provoking, intense, rich in emotion and complex. Her character's personalities are thoroughly developed, realistic and vividly imagined in my mind's eye. Her story is mysterious but not mystic. Let me share a bit about this story with hopeful intention that you will add Lisa Lickel's "Healing Grace" to your reading list.
Grace Runyon finds herself in unfamiliar East Bay, Michigan without memory of how she got there. She had fled from the graveside of her husband Jonathan's burial, overwhelmed with guilt and grief. Ashamed and blaming herself because she couldn't save him through her God given gift - one that had been passed through the generations before her. Believing everyone including God had abandoned her. She wanted to erase the past, which was impossible - so she ran and hid herself from anyone in Woodside, Tennessee from finding her Impetuously Grace bought a house in East Bay that had been neglected and empty over a year. Grace learned the house had belonged to
Ted Marshall of the prominent Marshall family living next door. Ted was too ill to maintain the house and properly care for his small son after being critically injured in an auto accident. Ted was divorced from his flighty wife who subsequently disappeared. The Marshall "house next door" became an immediate thorn in Grace's side and intrusive when Ted Marshall and son Eddy appeared at her door with a loaf of bakery bread to welcome her. Ted's appearance startled her almost speechless at seeing him leaning on a crutch nervously beginning to sweat with his left leg and arm quivering.
"This man, God but all screamed in her inner ear. This is why I brought you here. For your touch."
Ted also had a motive for visiting Grace that first day. He asked Grace for a favor that would be life changing in every respect. Little did Grace know what lie ahead of her in East Bay. It was not going to be easy. Still mourning her great losses, her entire family - Jonathan being the last, would not stop haunting her. Grace wanted away from death and illness - to heal herself. Grace's occupation as a Physical Assistant, coincided well with her "gift of healing" soon found her employed at the local clinic. She was compelled to use her gift successfully in a couple of incidents, however could not bring it about again and considered God was denying her the gift and she was a failure. East Bay residents became skeptical and suspicious of Grace. They called her a witch among other things that ruined her reputation. Grace is constantly harangued. Hard criticism and pressure tested Grace almost beyond her capabilities.
Would Grace lose her mind? Maybe.
Romance for Grace and Ted? Perhaps.
Has God taken away her gift? Grace fears so.

I’ve read and reviewed several books by my friend, author Lisa Lickel, so when she asked about a re-do of a previous book, I jumped at the chance. Once I started reading Healing Grace though I quickly realized that this book was different from the rest. It’s not a mystery. It’s not necessarily a romance. What it is, is spellbinding as it drew me in and I couldn’t be satisfied until I got to the last page (which means yes, I read it all in one day).
Grace Runyon has faced overwhelming losses and burdened with guilt over the last of them, the death of her husband to cancer, she runs away from her Tennessee town to a tiny place in Michigan. Grace has known from a young age that she had a spiritual gift of healing, but it had not saved her husband. While no one else blames her for his death, she cannot forgive herself and struggles with God, the giver of the gift, who had withheld it’s power.
Impulsively buying a little cottage home, she ends up neighbors to the Marshalls and faced again with the need to heal as Ted is suffering from an unnamed illness that is debilitating and will eventually kill. She falls in love with Ted through his son Eddy, a little boy who captures her heart but also stirs the grief of the little boy she had lost herself due to a car accident.
Grace decides to re-enter the work world as a physician’s assistant and at times finds her gift of healing being exercised in secret at the clinic to help her patients. This comes at a cost however. Some healings cause her deep emotional and physical pain that mirrors her patient’s agony, although recovery is quick. Soon many in the town question whether she is a witch, although her gift has never brought harm. Coupled with her perceived failure in her past, self-doubts arise and Grace faces a crisis that tears apart her soul.
I don’t want to be a spoiler for the story. It is a worthy read and one I hope to read again. Lisa’s dives into a minefield of emotions as well as the theological minefield of spiritual gifts since some schools of thought believe certain gifts like healing are not for this age. I disagree. I was impressed by her balanced view of spiritual gifts. Gifts are from God. They are used for the church (body of believers) and they are not used at our will, but His.
Gifts sometimes come with a cost as we serve and pour ourselves out as an act of worship. Grace illustrates that powerfully. The final scene of the book is riveting. You can disagree if you want about the dispensation of gifts but let’s be clear, nothing Lisa writes indicates a “psychic” or “satanic” power at work. Is it real? It's fiction, but I wouldn't put it past God to work in the way she describes. For this I applaud her because she masterfully illustrated biblical truths: like love requiring sacrifice and the challenge believers all have to set aside self and pride, and even the desire for the love and affirmation of others, in order to be used.

As always happens with Lisa’s books, I was hooked on “Healing Grace” by chapter one. I’m the kind of reader that shuts a book never to open it again, if by chapter one, I’m not fully engaged with the characters and more than mildly curious about the plot. I’m a tough one to please!!
But Lisa’s writing always pleases me. Without fail, I can count on her stories to be the kind I grump about having to put down when the kids’ bellies need to be filled. Drat those hunger pangs!
So I wasn’t surprised when “Healing Grace” dug its fingers into my heart. Grace’s pain was so vivid, her dilemma so complex, I HAD to know what happened. Would she choose to heal Ted? And how exactly does she do that healing stuff anyway?
The author is an expert at taking the ordinary and twisting it into something just different enough to become refreshing and intriguing. In “Healing Grace” she gave spiritual gifts a dose of steroids…
What if the gift of healing resided at the tips of a woman’s fingers? What if the act of healing others caused her physical pain? How would she use the gift? Or would she have the courage to use it at all? What if her gift failed her, and the person she loved most died a slow, agonizing death?
I doubt I would have done any differently than Grace. I’d have run and refused to use the gift again. But at some point, the running has to stop and the healing must begin again. It’s Grace’s own journey to healing that kept me clicking that “page forward” button on my Kindle.

The novels of Wisconsin author Lisa Lickel always impress me with their clean lines, snappy dialogue and beautiful prose. "Healing Grace" first came out in 2009, but was disappointing--not through any fault of Lisa's but because of the book's original publisher's questionable business decision to rush production, marketing a poorly done product not worth of the prose.
Lisa and her "Healing Grace" deserved better and both have achieved it with this new edition by a second publisher.
Grace Runyon ran from a string of family tragedies, a personal secret, and community expectations that tested her faith and personal courage. She fled from her hometown of Woodside, Tennessee to start a new life without commitments in East Bay, Michigan. Life, though, had other expectations of Grace.
Grace becomes the babysitter for the young son of neighbor Ted Marshall, an invalid, now living with his brother, businessman Randy Marshall. She takes a job as a physician's assistant at the local clinic, and soon is drawn into the lives of her new home, friends, and co-workers.
But after her experiences in Tennessee, can Grace again share love and offer her secret gift to benefit those she cares for, no matter the cost?

Healing Grace by Lisa J. Lickel
Lickel gives her readers another taste of her rich narrative and troubling life decisions in Healing Grace.
Grace has a special healing power above what she learned in medical college as a physician’s assistant. When the power fails her to heal her husband, she runs, thinking she can outrun her troubled faith.
States away, she meets the endearing Ted who also needs medical assistance of a kind that isn’t discovered yet.
Is this a test of Grace’s healing powers, faith, or something bigger?
Ted wants the beautiful woman next door, yet with a failing prognosis, how can he subject her to temporary love? And will he dare to ask her to try her special healing just one more time-for him, for them?
Healing Grace dives into a slew of emotions brought on by the caring and faith of friends and family experiencing the ill health of a loved one. Lickel is artful at raising the unspoken questions of the mind and leaving the reader with a thoughtful interpretation.

Lickel slowly reveals more about Grace as the story unfolds. She’s a physician’s assistant with an extra something, a gift of healing which is both a blessing and curse. The fact that she wasn’t able to heal her husband or prevent her son and parents from dying haunts her and she blames herself. An interesting and tender story on several levels. Those who have experienced deep loss may find themselves identifying with Grace who has been through so much. I give this four out of five stars.

Healing Grace is an encouragement to those of us who might be finding life a little bit rough. Lisa J. Lickel stings you along with just enough information for you to want to know more about Grace and what she has been through. Just when you think you have her all figured out, another layer is peeled away. I had a hard time putting the book down and was pulled into the emotions of the characters and the mysteries of the past. It's lighthearted, fun moments are a joy.

I love a book that makes me think, and this one did. I enjoyed finding clues that v-e-r-y slowly revealed pieces of the puzzle; yet the mystery was not completely solved until the end. The characters are finely drawn, each with his or her distinctive voice. I can't quit thinking about this story!

I was totally engaged in the characters - and this story kept me guessing. Not predictable at al. Enjoyed it.
